I finally got the balls to ask a dude who plays guitar to start a band. We're still looking for a drummer but we're trying to start practicing soon. I'm so hyped to write awful songs and perform in front of 2 random drunk dudes and have a good time.

Tip for bands, when you play with other bands, go out and watch the other bands. Cheer for them, go nuts for them and support them.

Point 9, about being realistic is so true. I'm good friends with the chats and the cosmic psychos (these bands in Australia are known all across the country and quite legendary in the Aussie Punk world), they toured with the guns and roses last year, just went to America but they are still struggling and couch surfing. I remember meeting them for the first time a few years back and each time, both bands said to me "Never quit your day job, you can always do what you love on the side but if you love it enough you will make time for it with your safety net in the back pocket". I've learnt a lot from these guys. I'm about to go on tour with them in 2 weeks but these words have always rung true with me and I'll continue to stick by it. Meeting the Psychos and living in Australia taught me a lot about public perception thinking they were all it was cracked up to be these big rockstars but actually going to their house, meeting the families and visually seeing it made me switch my perspective about putting expectation before reality but I admire the 30+ years of hardship to chase your dream.
    Love your videos Wyatt.

Me personally, I had always wanted to be the lead singer of a rock band. I did start playing bass after my brother picked up guitar, but would always be writing lyrics and songs, mostly in the style of punk rock.
Eventually my high school youth group was starting a band to play at our weekly meetings, so I joined that up, and it was a darn good time. We practiced once during the weekend, then again right before the youth group meetings, and for a bunch of high school kids playing Christian punk and ska covers, we were...probably awful.
After that, me and my two buddies broke off from the youth group band to form a "real" band where we'd play our own songs.
It really can be just that easy to start bands.

It is quite easy to become part of a band when you follow a certain religion. I once attended a prayer session at a classmate's house on a Saturday, even though we were supposed to be working on a project. I was an atheist then and still am now, so it felt weird when we had to share our feelings in a circle.
Our classmate played the keyboard and sang, which is normal for children of that religion as they are required to perform during prayer sessions whether it's done at home or in a Church where they perform in a band. However, yes I don't think it would be a good idea to form a punk or metal band with them . Instead, it would be better to look for a youth group that is not necessarily formed for religious purposes.

the thing about starting a band with your friends is very true me and a friend started a band a fair bit ago and we added one of my other friends later on drums and it sucked so bad i ended up realizing it was mainly cause i wasn't as motivated to play slower stuff and neither was the drummer like we originally planned and we ended up separating til me and my drummer friend got back together to write some faster stuff and were currently working on our second song and trying to grind on that project doing much better than the previous band and I'm excited for the future of doing a bunch of backyard gigs and playing tiny venues

Would love of a video of the more complicated financial issues that happen with a band that has been around for a while. Every band seems to run through it. Do you form a corporation? Do you issue "shares" for each member? How does the writing & playing get credited exactly because this effects the royalties. What happens when a original member leaves and a new person comes on. Do they get put on the same amount of shares as the last member or are they a hired employee now? Gets complicated if your band becomes your income. Look at Slipknot and a bunch of other bands. It's way easier when you're playing for a few people and just splitting the cash off some local shows and maybe Bandcamp. But it gets complicated fast when you start touring, hitting bigger streaming numbers and sales and get popular. Plus not to mention you never know how all the members truly feel about each other 2-3-4-5 years or more down the line. I just make music for the fun of it, and my band is fictional lol, and I've only made like $5 off whatever I've put out, so definitely not an issue for me lol but I can see how it can get harder in some aspects for real bands if they find some success.

I hope that one day following your tips, I can be apart of the next biggest hit in the metal world. 10:26 I can't stress that enough. Ive been gonig to local shows for years and it always irked me when people performed on stage looking like they dont wanna be there. because i would tell old bandmates "dont just stand there! move around, bang your head, do SOMETHING. atleast act like you're having fun." but they would always get defensive & call me controlling 🙄😒

This past monday I played a show with my band, great venue, but not many people showed up (understandable, since it was on a fucking monday and the place is a bit far away from the center). Still, the organization had treated us very good, the stage is awesome, sound and light people are the best and some of our friends were there, so we went out and gave it all. We had a blast, I hit one of the guitar players by accident and made him mess up his solo and we just kept rolling. After we got down from the stage, one of the organizers came up to us and congratulated us for our performance, said they would count with us for next years edition, for wich they intend to bring at least one big headliner. So yeah, I confirm everything Wyatt said on this video.

I used to be in one of those typical high school metal bands. It was fun for a bit. Here's the short backstory on how things went downhill very quickly. I was the keyboardist who didn't know how to play keyboard. My friend knew this but wanted me to join anyway. I did and then she was surprised that I didn't know keyboard. I was kicked from the band not too long after and soon after that the band fell apart because it became a clash of egos for everyone who remained. Fun times.
Currently trying to put together my own mini group to play some shows and just have fun. You definitely hit the nail with this video. All your points are dead on. Don't expect much at all when starting out. Just do what you can with what you have and make the best of it. Also practice. Like a lot!

The issue with the internet. Is when you’re on stage and going to do something cool or special. It will not be a surprise at the next show 500 hundred miles away Because of the internet everybody already knows about it and seen it on line. So the internet messes up show surprise stuff. So the net is good for marketing but bad for live surprises on stage. Yeah the was a time before the internet when it was easier to stay fresh. And. I do think the internet is here to stay !!!! Keep metal alive.

IM SO LUCKY! Nothing at all is set in concrete yet, but i play guitar and my friend plays bass, and we have two other friends who have guitars and sing really well (they dont play much so we dk if theyre actually going to get involved or not) and my friend found someone who is learning drums who happens to be dating one of the possible guitarists/singers! And theyre all super awesome people (altough one of the possibles is my ex..) lmao but yea weve been throwing around ideas of forming a band, and practice together in school and sometimes at eachothers houses - its awesome! And it just sort of FELL INTO PLACE!

Also me, bassist and drummer have quite a bit of music taste in common, and I'm really fluid in my music taste (will listen to, learn, and play whatever as long as I can get the hang of it lol) so hopefully we wont have any clashes in what we want to play, or we can have a slightly wider range of playing abilities :)
