Just wanted to drop in to say I started crocheting about 2 weeks ago, have just been practicing my stitches, and decided to make this my first real project. I was a bit daunted by the new technique at first (backloop!? long sc?!) but after going through your explanation a few times, it turned out to be really easy, and I honestly think it is easier than just a line of single crochets, since the stitches are much clearer to see and count with this method. Thank you!
Hi Federica, I didn't do anything special to close off, just cut the yarn and then pull through the loop! You could try a row of single crochet the end if you think it needs it :-)
I was trying to do it at the same time and I should’ve watched the video first. It should be said that the front loop you’re talking about is on the other side of your work… you say “the next front loop”, but you don’t ever say you turn your work! So my result was very different.
Hi Audree, yes, you always turn at the end of each row, sorry if that was not clear! When I say front loop, it is always as referring to the side you are looking at, I hope that helps!
Thanks so much for this beautiful pattern. I got almost half of a scarf done. Sadly the sides of the scarf are a little „wavy“, I can see that tendency in the first few rows that you do too, bit your final scarf looks so smooth. Do you think its about consistency when it comes to how tight/loose you crochet? Usually I crochet really tight and even, for this I try to do it more loose so the scarf will be flexible, but I think maybe I‘m not doing it consistent enough so my sides get those little waves. 🙈 anyway, love the pattern, thanks!
Im new to crotchet and having trouble starting this pattern. It seems my chain tightens incredibly as i complete the first row and then that row tightens as I complete the next and so on till i can hardly make row 3. I have tried using a 6.5mm hook and even a 9mm. Any recommendations/tips would be greatly appreciated!
Hi there, with this stitch pattern, you need to make sure you are skipping the stitch behind each "long single crochet". If you're not skipping the stitch it could cause it to tighten up like you are describing. If you are still having issues feel free to email me and send a pic :-)
Do you mean a 5mm crochet hook? This stitch pattern is quite dense so you could definitely use a smaller hook but I would probably also choose a thinner yarn in that case e.g. DK or Light Worsted
I’m having a hard time understanding where you are putting these stitches into 😢 it looks like you are not working the long single crochet into the previous row but somewhere lower? I’m fairly new, but could anyone explain this or show me close up?
Hi Danielle, you are absolutely right, the long sc is not worked into the previous row but 2 rows below. That's why we work 2 set up rows at the start, so that in Row 3, we can work the long sc into Row 1. I hope that helps!
It probably took me about 2 weeks working on it in the evenings. I'm not a super fast crocheter but the stitch pattern is very repetitive so once you get the hang of it, it moves along pretty quickly :-)
I have been trying to get the free written pattern on your site, but nothing works. I’ve created an account, done everything, and it’s not working. The only thing I want to know is how to end the scarf, do the finitions. Because you can’t just stop like that, the long single crochets make a big stich in the back (it’s not the case at the begining of the scarf because there is row 1 and 2 before the repeat row). Please can you explain how you finish the scarf ? Thank you so much !
So, I actually did just finish mine off on a Row 3 repeat! If you don't feel like it is neat enough, you could definitely experiment with just a simple row of single crochet at the end. Let me know how it works!
These are approximate amounts for the different sizes, but it will depend a little on the yarn that you use: Child (6-10 yrs): 290 yds / 265m Teen: 450 yds / 411m Adult (S): 740 yds / 677m Adult (L): 845 yds / 773m
Love the scarf but I’m having a hard time seeing the stitch and when to turn over, I think it would be better to use a multicolour yarn so it will be easier to see
I start Row #2 with a single crochet and whenever I make a long single crochet I check if I'm skipping one stitch or not ... but my row always ends with a long single crochet instead of a single crochet ... Can you tell me where I'm making a mistake ??
Hi there, it is difficult to say without seeing it - have you double checked that you have an odd number of stitches in Row 1? Email is probably the best way to receive pattern support so please do send me a message if you need further help: sarah[at]nedandmimi[dot].com
@@nedandmimi I'm having the exact same problem, and I don't understand how you could end on a single crochet with an even number of stiches like is said in the video. If you do a long single crochet in the second stitch and then alternate you will keep doing them in the 4th, 6th, 8th etc if I understood everything correctly, meaning that you will always do the long single crochet in the even number stitch. Therefore, wouldn't the last stitch (an even number) always be the long single crochet? I don't see how it would be a regular single, unless I'm missing something crucial.
Okay so I think I know what the problem was. In the first, you make an even number of stitches, but when you turn for round two you actually lose a stitch, making it an odd number. I did an additional stitch when turning, because I thought the exact number of chains in row 1 had to be kept 😅
@@somethingsomething7468 glad you figured it out! You start with an even number of chains, but then you skip the first chain from the hook so the first row actually has an ODD number of sts. I know it's a bit confusing! But yes, every row should have an odd number for the pattern to work 🙂
Hi there, the free pattern is available in blog post format here: nedandmimi.com/ridge-walk-scarf-free-crochet-pattern/ If you would like the print-friendly pdf version then you can purchase it in my Etsy or Ravelry stores (links in video description). I hope this helps!
You can pause the video and slow it down by using the wheel in the top right hand corner setting button and set the speed slower. No reason to be so rude.
Foundation Chain -- 01:47

Thank you very much😊
Thanks for that!
As a baby crocheter and newly-returned from Ireland traveler, I’m so happy i found you!!
Thank you!
Lovely design. Simple and elegant. Thank you so much. ❤

Love the stitch and the scarf. Making one for my sister and myself. Thanks a bunch’s.❤
You’re welcome 😊
Oh wow I love it .
I really like your crochet hook .
May I ask what kind this is ?
Thank you! My hook is a very inexpensive KnitPro Zing hook, I got it as part of a set ages ago but I absolutely love it. Sometimes simple is best!
This is a lovely design and very easy to do. I started it today and it's incredibly fun to just zone out to. Lovely tutorial and have subscirbed.
Thanks so much, I'm so glad you enjoyed it 😊
Hi. How many chains approx for adult size? Also, about how many chains for child size? Thank you
Hello, I love this pattern! But I have a question, once you reach your desired length, how do you "close" your work?
Hi Federica, I didn't do anything special to close off, just cut the yarn and then pull through the loop! You could try a row of single crochet the end if you think it needs it :-)

How do I close my stitches at the end?
Nice crochet work easy to do. Thanks for sharing

Lovely pattern! Thanks from across the pond. 😊
Thank you!
Now I start to make scarf
Where did you get the crochet hook you are using and what kind is it?
sorry if I missed it in the video, but how long does it take to make an adult s size?

It would be nice if the camera was a close up on what was happening as its impossible to see where ypu are putting the hook in from that discltance.
Would this work with a size 5 or would that be way too small?

Gracias por tan linda puntada y por su explicación, felicidades. 👏
De nada :-)

how long does it take for a beginner to make an adult scarf?

How would you change to a second color to this to create blocky rows
Yes you could definitely do this, I think it would look great!
You are a star thank u❤
Are you skipping a stitch on top and on bhottom?
You just skip the stitch directly behind the long sc (when you work 2 rows below), and then the next stitch is a regular sc. I hope this helps!
Love the scarf but I’m having a hard time seeing the stitch and when to turn over, I think it would be better to use a multicolour yarn so it will be easier to see

She explains really well. You can change the speed of the video if you need to.
This is not hard, just tedious and it is ok...
