- It's topwater time! These tricks will make a huge difference for you this Fall! If you like throwing topwater, you already know that subtle changes can make a huge difference in how many bass you catch. Today, Tim is giving some quick tips that have helped him take his Fall topwater fishing to the next level!
From cadence, to retrieve style, to the addition of front runners, Tim is giving a ton of great information in this video! Consistently catching topwater fish requires constant adaptation. Tim keeps a topwater rod on deck more than any other angler we've met, he is the king of adapting to changing conditions and still finding that surface bite.
Below you'll find links to all the baits he talked about throughout the video, as well as some of the key rod and reel combos for fishing these baits effectively. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Going into spring here in South Africa i went fishing 2 weekend ago and caught a 5 pounder on a wopper plopper and lost an even bigger fish. Nothing beats that feeling seeing the fish hit your topwater bait. Was straight 40 pound braid on a medium heavy Shimano clarus 6'6 casting rod paired with my Shimano Calisto reel.
That’s sick dude
Do you have bass in South Africa???
Yes i fish almost every weekend and top water is just the best hopefully i can get a bite on video
@@jackkrauser8687yes we have a lot of bass
@@jackkrauser8687I was about to ask the same thing
Thanks, Tim! This is absolutely the exact topic I needed to watch this morning before I hit the water before work.👍🏻🎣💪🏻
Me, with lunkerhunt and October in sight: hold on to your dookie, prepare to get spooky.
Literally paused the video and ordered two front runners. Never heard of that shit, let’s goooo!
I bit the bullet recently and bough the SB 105. This Monday my brother and I went to a local lake with hydrilla. We fished our known spots. We tried drop shot, carolina rig, flukes, cranks, jigs, etc. I finally broke out the SB 105 in Full Metal aka Chrome. I cast right up on the clay banks and popped it over the dying hydrilla in 2-4 feet. Boom I caught 6 in an hour. The only other fish I caught all day was on a SK Caffeins Shad. The SB 105 was the ticket. I am sold on the SB 105.
If you’re not into top water…. What’s wrong with you!!!
Thank you Tim and Matt at TB for taking my bass fishing to the next level! Your videos have helped me catch a ton of fish and they always keep me excited to get out there and try something new. Keep ‘em coming!
Jitter bug and hula popper. Wow !I still have a few of those.
Super pop r and black 1/2 oz buzzbait all ya need!!
Thank you Tim! As I was watching this I had an idea to run a Heydon torpedo in front of a whopper plopper to get the teaser action. I will remove hooks from the torpedo to stay legal. Thank you for the idea!!!
I don't use walking baits because I'm usually seated in a kayak and don't know how to work them.
You can definitely use a walking bait from a seated position in a kayak. I do it all the time. You just work the rod to the side with short little pulls. Having a rod with a shorter butt helps but that is true for almost all fishing in a kayak.
Shorter rod and shorter butt
Was gonna say the same thing. All I do is fish from a kayak. Just small jersey to whatever side
I really like that Jamaica Boa, in that exact same color you have. As a kid, I spent entire seasons fishing nothing but a double buzz bait atound all the vegitation we had in Indiana, and slayed em. A buzzbait can be the business in the right place!
“If you’re not into throwing top-water…”
We can’t be friends. Seek help
Do you like the Berkley Choppo? I’ve caught a ton of big fish on that bait this year. Previously I only used the Whopper Plopper but I let my wife chooses some baits when I was making a TW order and she chose the Choppo. Good thing too. Caught some bigguns on it this summer here in Boise, Idaho.
I’m going to tell you again….. GIANT DOG X- is not referring to the size of the bait , it’s referring to the size of the fish you will catch on it! GIANT BASS!!!!
Kept waiting for some " follow up baits " for top water misses,,,I thought the two kind of went hand in hand. Maybe you should do a " follow up video" on the subject,,,😂
Got that "burn/pause" senario on video this summer. Had a perch hiting a frog but missed, so fished it in the strikezone for a min and when I reeled it back to make another cast a jack pike litterly vent flying. Next cast burn/pause and another blowup.
I saw bass hitting bait fish in schools at the time I was going for blue gill and brim ..I threw a trick worm but they were biting up top I didn't have my top water lures I'm definitely going back with some minnows and top water stuff it was crazy..I should have tried my frog but I didn't.. they are definitely fattening up by feeding
Man!!! This is very reassuring. I thought I was a dummy for rigging a small popper and spook like this.
What's that feathered treble Tim replaced onto the frontrunner? That hook looked high quality.
I essentially got my bass fishing started by throwing a Rebel Pop-R on a vacation trip. I’m glad they are still being made and in the color I love throwing.
I’m heading to guntersville the 3rd week of October. What do you suggest I throw.
Thanks for all of the options for top water. I love top water season. I can’t wait to try out some of your suggestions. Appreciate you.
Tim,
Is the Megabass Crank Eisel a better all around top water rod than the One Ten Special?
“If you’re not into throwing top water” …didn’t know that was possible.
baby torpedo as a front runner ahead of a wake bait . it doest work. dont ever try it. just dont
could i throw a 3/8 oz war eagle finesse jig on a med fast 7ft baitcaster
Chrome SB 105 🔥 🔥 🔥
That good doggo was sitting still and hiding the whole video but came out to say goodbye 😂
Nice dog Tim!
My lord do I wish my topwater rod was a nrx!
Favorite topwater at night ?
Good morning!😊
@tacticalbassin is the curado 72mlbfs And the expride have the same action??
I have had a lot of baitfish pinned close to my kayak and watched them get blown up on within inches of my yak!
Hey Tim, what are those yellow hook keepers you have clipped to your rods? Does TW carry those?
I was wondering the same thing - been looking for a clip on hook keeper.
Do you ever find any use for completely silent topwater walking baits?
Oh yeah brotha’… the Hula Popper! With that nasty skirt they glue on. Oh the memories
Woke up to fall here this morning Tim , 1 day to the next got a mega smally on a plopper the other day the bites heating up as the temps cool down
I fish top water all year lol just bc i love it lake of the ozarks my boi always have it ready
Forgot to mention that we sometimes put a trout lure/feather on the line about 10 inches above the topwater.
Great tutorial, Thanks for sharing Tim
Thanks Tim, and good looking dog.
First🥇🏆
What is the biggest sized Shower Blows you use on largemouth?
I've used the 150 size....big baits=Big bass...I've caught 2 lb er's on it
@@andybales7318 I've got some old hand me down 7" Cordell Pencil Poppers which are even bigger than the biggest 6" Shower Blows. I've never thrown them. Someone filled some of them with lead and they sink like a rock. I guess they surf fished with them to get distance and fished them subsurface. Much heavier than the normal floaters. I'll never use those sinkers. Years ago my uncle bought a bunch of cheap saltwater tackle in San Diego and gave it to my grandparents who owned an old bait shop on a Texas lake. Some new and some used. Nobody bought those big things and Grandpa gave them to me.
Great tips Tim,thanks.
Great video. Very helpful.
What replacement hooks for the SB 105 do you recommend? Feathered replacement?
Huge fan of your videos. Love what you guys do and the way you do it. I was wondering if you had a terminal tackle video somewhere. Like when you use snaps vs swivels vs direct tie vs split rings and whatnot. How do you tie on specific lures and why?
The hula popper and jitter bug were my 2 first topwaters also Tim they were the best way back then. Thanks Tim for the tips on topwater 👍🏻🎣
All hail the Jitterbug. Spent many a summer night growing up in Wisconsin listening to that pop pop pop SPLASH
