My German grandmother & mother made Blitz Torte with raspberry cream. Oranges were rare and for special occasions. Like Christmas. They had a farm, garden & orchard. My Tante Lina who lived in the West where I was born also had a farm and taught me during one summer to make Blitz Torte and I provided the lemons my father had purchased. We made lemon pound cake as well. Her first time having lemons. My mother and four sisters escaping the East between 1949 & 1950. Wonderful memories & I learned cooking and baking from my mothers German family & her. Polish cooking and baking from my fathers Polish family in Philadelphia.

I suspect what came out of Tante Lina’s kitchen was better and looked better.

@@mindakahn9964 I went to East Germany with my mother in 1980. While still under Communist Rule. It was bleak and evidence of the War still apparent, but some places were making head way toward restoration. My grandmother had moved in with my Aunt who had remained & her husband. My cousin Heidi who was my age learned the art of cooking & baking & many other things from my grandmother. I will have to say she was better than me. Yes they did without many things, but they had gardens & fruit they put up in the cold cellar. Since reunification I have been back to witness the many changes. I am still close with my cousin Heidi, but my mother & all her siblings are now gone. My cousin Rosemarie my Tante Lina's daughter & I are close. More like sisters than cousin's. If it weren't for the fact that my children & grandchildren were in the USA I would probably have gone back to Germany. It's difficult being separated by a vast ocean.

Thanks Martha, and Happy B-Day. I'm from Indiana and well acquainted with Sugar Cream Pie, but never made it. Maybe, now's the time.

Love you Martha! I used to work for K-mart stores in the 1980s and would maintain your linen display. Also, I am from Southern California and Love Snoop Dog of the LBC.

Born and raised in Michigan…. I’ve never heard of ANY of these. Even Sam Adams uses MI cherries…I’m surprised by this lineup

Me too, born and raised in Michigan. Have heard of the Indiana pie but not the others. Surprised there wasn't a cherry pie. Michigan is known for its cherries.

Just noticed, Martha bakes a cherry pie ( to represent Michigan) in her Midwest program.

Belgians were not known to settle in Great Lakes. More apt to be in NYC/ Philly area. Great Lakes is a lot of German, Scandinavian, Irish/Scots, Poles, some Italian.

How did she do a "Great Lakes" episode and not do anything with the fruits that grow on the west side of Michigan, specifically because of the lake effect weather??

She needs to make our regional burgers. Southwest Michigan Olive or Olive Scoop burgers with real Mayo, sliced tomatoes, crisp lettuce leaves, diced green olives with or without a scoop of Old English style jalapeno cheese spread or American cheese slice on pan grilled 80/20 beef patty with a good large butter hamburger style bun with malted or seasoned fries.

The Belgian rice pie is interesting. Wondering if it would make sense to wait until the pie was put in the oven to add the eggs to the rice mixture to maybe retain more moisture.

For Euros watching, a 'stick' of butter equates to ca.110g.
I guess you can buy little packages of pre-weighed butter in America?

Would you ever consider doing infused desserts with THC? 🌿💨
I have a cookbook from the 60’s that I found in a vintage bookstore of baking and cooking with marijuana and it’s wonderful. Hope this isn’t too controversial but it is legal in most every state.

Ive lived in a Great Lake State all my life, I’ve never heard of anything on the video aside from cheddar bread, which is just white bread with cheddar kneaded into the dough.
So Middlecoasters how real is this?

You must have missed episodes of this particular series that taught about pizzas & focaccia, and the one featuring cheeses, or the show about crackers & flatbreads. But, really, most baking is about sweets.

I really want to make some of Martha's recipes but we use grams as measurements here in Australia not cups or stick of butter. And Google doesn't give an accurate conversion. Please include grams for each recipe.

For the Belgian Rice pie, when you put the pie in the fridge overnight, wouldn’t the bottom bread get all hard and chewy? I can’t imagine rice and bread be good eaten cold. 🤔

    • @MarthaStewart
      @MarthaStewart  3 роки тому +6

If you're worried about the texture (or short for time) the minimum amount of time it needs to be cooled would be 2 hours! But an overnight stay in the fridge won't compromise the bottom bread layer at all! Be sure to also serve the pie at room temperature! 😊
