Great work again, I know it isn't easy but you make it look so easy. Look forward to seeing the new place develop, you have earned your success, very brave and hope it all goes from strength to strength. Joe
Great work! The more I see what you guys do, to repair and recover rusted panels and structural corrosion, the more I like and enjoy, what you do and the right way to do it properly.
Hi lads . Just discovered your channel. You make it look easy, the sign of a good craftsman/craftsperson. Had a Mazda 323 with 43 k miles on. Failed Mot for rust. After having a wee chat with the tester i was invited to look under thee car. Never seen anything like this before. Drove it straight round to the scrappie. Cost of possible repair was waaaaay in excess of value of car. Mazdas for some reason don't last any time .Expensive lesson .?? Later🤐
I'm just finishing up a 2002 Primera - repaired the rust, fresh steel, rustproofed every milimeter - or so I thought.. the boot area looked totally mint so I left it alone - I went to surface treat the drip-upstand..which looked immaculate till I pulled off the seal.. rust.. - I delved right TF into the boot area, took off everything, every cover, lights, inserts, blah blah - the "Mint" boot area was sound, but there were small outbreaks hiding in every dark corner.. Rust never sleeps and you've seldom "got it all" even when you think you have. I think I've got it all now, but I bet there's stuff hiding.. there always is. :-)
BTW- see the likes of that MX, If it's a common vehicle I'm repairing and a common fail area, I make a template off the repair section when it's the perfect fit & file it away for the future - next time I have one to do, I grab the template, cut that shape out of steel & bang - no mucking about re-inventing a repair shape. At this stage now I have templates for all sorts & man do they save a lot of time mucking about.
@@yorkshirecarrestoration No - I mean for "repeat repairs" - example being I do a lot of mid 2000's Pajeros so I keep templates of the common fail areas, same as for merc sprinters, blah blah - that way you don't need the eyeometer. :-)
As an Mx-5 owner I've always been aware that these rust well, but never expected to see the Mk3's in such poor condition, I wouldn't consider 57 plate as being that old or bad but thanks for being the 'boys that can'....other than that they are great little cars, and guess the owners happy to pay to have them live a bit longer!...keep up the good work!
@@colinritchie1757 get wax oiling because I had an 05 and it went in exactly the same places and that was three years ago, so about the same age as yours today. Wished I'd have known to do it earlier.
5 years ago I wanted to buy an MX 5 NC, but in the end it became a Porsche Boxster with more than 200 km (I'm from the Netherlands). It's not cheap to have a Boxster if you need parts, but there is no rust, even after 22 years. So that saves a lot of money on the other end.
I have a Honda Jazz that is nearly 8 yrs old and it doesn't have a mark on it anywhere, I was considering trading it in for an MX5 as I have always fancied one but I think after watching your videos that I will stick with my little Honda.
Been watching you guys for a few months and I'm really impressed with your outfit and quality of work...... If you get bored of the mx5 there's always my bongos rear arches that need doing 🤣. I may brave them myself. Have you ever done one?. Great channel guys
Did you use to work at a Mazda dealership? it's just you look very familiar as if I remember you from courses or new model training hahah. Great to see hand crafted panels ect in your videos, nice work.... All the best Joseph.

@@cluelessmgmidgetrestoratio6990 it is but most of what we film is after we have finished working on customers cars :) as the videos take a lot of time to film and edit :)
When welding in patches like these, is there ever a situation in which you would choose a butt weld over a lap weld? Lovely video as always, keep them coming!
Hi Steve can you recommend anything as a temporary until I can fully restore the car, what’s the best wheels or sanding to take back the rusted areas and what also to spray or paint on afterwards just to stop it getting worse, thanks .
Some great work there, could watch rust being cut out for hours! Sorry if this has been asked before, but what brush able grey/ Zinc primer are you using? Cheers
We have never has an issue with not reinstating those holes but we always advise drilling some need holes on the bottom of the new sill. After drilling protect them :)
Hi Steve, fabulous skills make such a good watch. Have to ask another question, I am starting a project involving a brand new shell (find of the century for me anyway!) and am still trying to determine the best way of finishing the underside etc. Resisting the temptation of shutzing as it's a pretty one way journey and doesn't always last what would you suggest? I see you use gravitex, one idea is to better the factory seam sealing and use gravitex which can be over painted, typically i would use high solids 2 pack, sound about right, what do you think?
Hi Karen. It is a design problem and doubled by mazda not protecting them properly, combine this with owners not looking after the underneath makes for a rusty car. There are a lot more good ones out there as these cars were sold in the millions and we get all the rusty ones as nobody else wants to repair them haha
Hi Leo. Yes there are a lot of good solid Miata / MX5's out there but seen as we do rust repaires almost all of the cars that come to us are rusty so it looks like they are all rusty, but they're are way more good cars than rusty cars :)
You are a true metal artist. I am amazed with the talent you have keep the great contact coming !!!
Thank you for your continued support 👍
Love your technique! As Henry Ford used to say. "Take a big job, break it up to lots of little jobs"!

What is the grey fluid you are brushing onto the backside of the panel before you weld it in?

Hi, In my opinion your best off taking any surface rust off then a neautaliser like hammerite kurust and after that dries use a 2k primer :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration thanks Steve 👍

Hi Patrick. If you have a new shell I'd deffo use something like upol gladiator as the protection is second to none. :)
What’s the primer you use mate? Is it just 2K mixed for a HVLP but put on with a brush
Hi Jason. Yes it's 2k. Can be applied by spray gun or brushed on :)

The primer 2k epoxy. :)

is this car particulary rusty , or is this a design flaw in the mazda NC ?
Hi Karen. It is a design problem and doubled by mazda not protecting them properly, combine this with owners not looking after the underneath makes for a rusty car. inside? you do nothing? rust
If you read the captions and watch me point you will see that it says "after the repair we Waxoil inside via these access holes"
I'm starting to think you CAN believe it and the titles are hype, purely to get views
It helps us get views and hopefully people enjoy the content :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration 👍❤🚗
The pumping music ruins the video I'm afraid.
Why bother.scrap it ffs
The car will last many years if the welding is done and the underside protection is repaired where required, it should not be scrapped
Thank you for your positive input.
What product do you paint behind the panel on that you brushed on ?
Hi John. 2k brush on primer.
