Russells lap was good but should be taken in context that williams threw biggest RW they had available on the car. if race had actually started in somewhat reasonable conditions they'd be overtaken by everyone in 10 laps.
Rain was predicted for race day before qualifying so using the biggest rear wing definitely made sense
They took their risk, threw their hat in the ring, and it massively paid off. Part of this game is taking risks when no other team is willing to. They saw an opportunity and took full advantage despite all that was stacked against them. Gotta respect the risk and reward aspect of a team that was down bad
The context is that the Williams had bad Aero overal which gives them great straight line speed. That people don't understand this stuff matters a lot in the wet is really a farce. But we will see if George ever even gets a car to fight with Verstappen.
For me George is still just the psychopath who put it on the grass at a wet Imola and blamed Bottas for it.
Williams also had one of the slowest cars so idk what your point is

Max is too good at rain. Some insane lines at sector 2 find some extra grip.

just watched fernando vs max vs charles in monaco and immediately thought it would be amazing to see how that unfolded and where verstappen pulled out those few hundreths at the end
if ALO changed for inter for the first box, than he will be wheel to wheel with VER or even in front of VER, but sadly the team decided to put on medium

George seemed to make some good strategy calls in the rain. 2021 Belgium and 2021 Russia qualis can be an example. I don't know if he still knows how to make clever strategies in the rain considering how he terribly performed during Singapore 2022
Honestly it seems like Mercedes killed his confidence and make him rely almost entirely on the team to even accelerate

I think the major factor here was that towards the bus stop Russell actually locked up and although he did his best to keep on the curb there was a lot of curb left on Russell compared to Verstappen. But yeah he did modestly well. That Williams has always been known to be great in a straight line just lacked on straights particularly on the Kemmel straight and also through Eau Rouge and Radilion. But yeah very unusual to be on a very tight line at La Source. But yeah it paid dividends

Only thing from the top of my mind that can compete is Max pole lap from Imola last year when he got pole by 7 tenths while having a full lift in the middle of the straight because of yellow flags
Don't forget that the lift because of yellow flags it's just to show that you "slowed down" so the time lost wouldn't even a be a tenth.

He had a dry setup. Bottas qualified 8th so it was a good enough performance
Also the gap george and Lewis is nothing. 0.009 if I remember well
@@alexlacl8730 not exactly a dry setup, cause rain was predicted for the race too. Red Bull and Mercedes took it safe, compared to Williams, who put on like, a Hungary spec rear wing. So, Lewis and Max were probably running similar downforce.

It looks like Max and Lewis didn't brake as efficiently as George did in Turn 1. Only Lewis couldn't build the momentum because he missed the apex and couldn't build any more momentum. He couldn't get those 0.5 seconds out over the whole lap because George and Max were driving really well.

2021 mercedes had a small operational window and it was generally hard to set up early in the season + Lewis didnt have the best of weekends

The graphic is incorrect. George was ahead of Verstappen all the way until the full flat left hander before the final S. Verstappen was slightly more confident on the brakes which gave him the advantage in the final corner and with decent traction saw him finish ahead of George.

Russell being 2nd here and taking several points during that part of the season, Ricciardo winning in Monza, Norris pole in Russia, Bottas numerous power unit changes...
For me it's pretty clear Mercedes was working and investing in giving Lewis the monster engine he had in Brazil...
The monster engine that had the same top speed as the Alpha Tauri in Brazil and the same top speed as the RB in Qatar? Hamilton was so quick in the last 4 races because they fixed the braking with their car and improved the corner exit acceleration that the RB had all season.
@Cal3000 top speed isn't the only thing thay counts. Acceleration, and ability to maintain power across laps is also important.

1:51 did Hamilton actually go wide on the lap, and if so why wasn’t it deleted? I seem to remember track limits being a little different in 2021 to now, but to me it seems in the graphic at least that would be pretty slam dunk, time deleted.

in 2022 they cracked down hard on track limits. it was still enforced obviously in 21, but much less so. hamilton didn’t really gain very much time from going wide there, and in the horrid rain they may have been lenient. only specific corners did they keep an eye for track limits as there was lots of time to be found by cutting the corner slightly
but here he gained next to nothing, so it didn’t need to be deleted. but probably would have been if this was in 22 or 23 :)
