fastest/easiest way I could figure it out, regardless of inversions: if it sounds weird and you can hear a major third in it, it's augmented. if it sounds weird and you don't hear a major third/you hear a minor third instead, it's diminished! thank you so much for the video!

if the chord sounds weird and you can hear a james bond'esque sound and maybe a major third in there thats an augmented triad for ya

For those finding it difficult distinguishing between diminished and augmented, if you can sing the wholetone scale mentally from highest to lowest note vice versa then it's augmented.

Do you have some advices for other 95% of people who don’t know how to sing whole tone scale ?

@@cofftps67yago94 I do, personally I know that Jeff Buckley's Dream Brother starts with a guitar riff which incorporates the augmented triad so I memorized the melody and just sing it along the chord, if it fits, then it's an augmented triad. So, find a song that uses the chord and you'll know

When I hear augmented chord it immediately remind me of the first chord in Oh Darling. Nailed it every time and in all inversions.

It's a lot easier to think about on piano than guitar. I never knew what augmented and diminished meant until hearing it this way. Now it makes sense. Thanks!

  • @alphakid9000

I distinguish between diminished and augmented because there is a diminished chord in the major scale so you can always imagine it resolving to major chord semitone above. For example bdim always feels it should resolve to C major in C

just letting u know that i play this everyday repeatedly. im a college student for audio engineering online for los angeles film school. I am still struggling with training my ear with the chords. Can you break them down more for us in another video? Make another way for people to identify them. I am getting familiar with my circle of 4ths and 5ths but my ear needs a better way to train.

    • @StephanieDouglassMusic

@@obl1xif_y981 Well, I mean ppl enter college at different levels. Some are pretty strong musically/instrumentally but don't have the same music theory background 🎼🎶 (I think many high schools don't offer AP Music Theory, for one). Like I know many teachers, private or at school, can introduce kids to some theory, but it's not normally at the same depth comparatively, at least in my observation

Lemme just give a small life hack... To those like me, who can't tell dim apart from aug, dim resolves to a *major* and aug resolves to the *relative minor*...so just try to predict if the chord you heard resolves to a major or a minor and life's easy...

I literally have no understanding of music, but Augmented sounds questioning/nervous,
    Major sounds hopeful/warm,
Minor sounds hopeless/dreadful, and diminished sounds suspenseful/tragic.

    • @StephanieDouglassMusic

I have gotten help from www.musictheory.net/lessons before - their lessons are simple enough to follow. For a really deep look I would recommend taking a class at a community college. That would be most helpful in filling the gaps, plus it's sequential.
