I have a 2018 CB650F which is the immediate predecessor to the CB650R so I can appreciate the benefit of an E-clutch because when I rode to Barry, South Wales, during the summer, my left hand was aching due to the constant manipulation through traffic lights and the 20 mph zones which were prolific and extremely tiring, so for city dwellers the E-clutch is a no brainer.
    Another great video, Kate. ❤

I kind of like the idea of the E-Clutch for a city bike, too bad the weather was crap.

In the USA, the e-clutch is 'free' same exact price as the normal clutch version.

This system will be suitable for many older riders with problems with their hands including me , doesn’t get any easier for us older riders, I’ve been riding since 1974😮,
Enjoyable video could of done with better weather, not so sure about if I was sat down chopping on my food with loads of bikes chucking out fumes on my grub 😢

I can see this being quite good for commuting, town riding, or traffic. Let the bike deal with the gears.
Then, on the weekend, go full manual and have a bit more fun.

    • @AyaWetts

the bike will not deal with the gears, it will only deal with the clutch... you still have to shift gears.

Well, I can still see it being useful in the same situations. Reduce hand fatigue.

So the E clutch is kind of a quickshifter with extra functions? That's not too bad really a kind of use it or don't system like being able to programme 20 riding modes. Not the end of the world travesty some people have been making it out to be.

Guessing this was filmed on Monday then, looking at the weather? That E-Cluthc seems like a useful thing to have. I'm generally not a fan of modern "gizmology" on bikes, but I'm not a luddite either, so if it proves to me that it can do something useful, I'll have it. I was a fan of ABS when traditional riders were still tutting about computers on bikes and could you trust it, for example. I also have dodgy clutch wrist (thanks, Moto Guzzi...) so the idea of not having to use the clutch lever in traffic is attractive. I've had a couple of automatic scooters, so I'm not averse to clutchless riding, but the downside of those was always that you couldn't select a high gear on a dodgy surface (like snow). This seems like a good compromise.

I was interested in Honda using a mixture of UK plated and Spanish plated bikes. I wonder how they work out the expenses between Honda UK and Honda Spain? Just noticed German(?) plates too.
I like the looks of the Bike Shed. I've seen it on Freddy Dobb's channel. I would like to visit one day. Having said that, I'm not too sure how I would stand with a Spanish plated historic bike in the ULEZ zone. (They let me into Madrid!)

  • @hookmaster1109
    @hookmaster1109 4 години тому +2

I think Honda missed the mark here, the clutch and gearshift should be controlled by an app on your phone as it’s the only thing anyone is able to do these days. Maybe even shortcut that and make an app that simulates riding outdoors on an actual motorcycle.

I was just thinking of the Honda 50 Cub that my mother bought in 1965, which was the first bike I rode on the road. That also had an auto clutch, but manual gears (in this case, no clutch lever at all). Has technology progressed very far in the last 60 years?

Well, first of all, what a shame my home county of Sussex has not shown you it's better side, weatherwise 😢.
Then, as far as this E-clutch is concerned... who needs a Scooter in the shape of a motorbike? Oh, wait... I have a slight suspicion of arthritus in my left hand slowly making itself noticable, (now I need a GIF insert of an illuminating lightbulb here!). But for the motorcycle purist, I really can't see this as a viable option, as the Clutch/gear-shifting usage, is very much an integral part of the whole bike riding experience. However, it's good we have the choice. Just a pity Honda had to be first with it... says the Suzuki part of my brain. Facit after part one..., for me it's one or the other, but not 2 in 1.
So it's now up to you Kate to sell this to me in Part 2, in such a way, that I feel a test ride is inevitable!
I don't like the way in which innovation and electronics is slowly taking away all the fun out of riding, planting us on a maschine that does all the thinking for us! If this is the way future biking is gonna be, then i'm off to go get me a AN650 Burgman, with it's better weather protection, for my next ride around the rained out Lancs/York countryside.
Now for the brown nose bit... I feel this was a very good (so far) and accurate account of this new tech innovation. You've laid it out, in a way that even the thickest of our 2 wheeled friends can understand, along with your own thoughts of it so far, and you've presented it to us with a fantastic choice of B-roll, which must have been very difficult to find on such a wonderful day in the sunny Sussex countryside, and on all those half empty roads of our capital city!
Rock-on Biking, and rock-on UNK. Thanks..., looking forward to Part 2.
PS, ha ah, loved the fact you had a Lithuanian girl as your tour guide, but bet you both missed seeing St. Pauls Cathedral!

A bit torn on this. The technology is super clever and being Honda it's unlikely to hit the market until they are happy it's reliable. And for folk who do a lot of town riding and/or have issues like carpal tunnel or athritis then I get using a manual clutch constantly can become painful regardless of how light the action is. For someone like me who rides only for pleasure and spends little time in situations with lots of stop / start riding I don't think there would be much benefit as i'd ride it in manual mode because that's what i'm used to for fast riding. I just hope Honda are doing this out of genuine innovation for accessibility rather than starting down the the path of making bikes appeal to a MoDerN aUdIeNcE that doesn't really exist.
