Hi! I am flying from USA to London tommorow! When i came at first it wasn't that bad,but the next 2 hours were a bit worse, cus i hadn't eaten all day and i felt like i was gona faith.I tried to sleep, but i just kept waking up and felt so scared, cus i am on a plane 😭. Its a 8 hour flight and i trying to comfort myself to make it better! I mean the last 1 hour of the flight is okay, cus we start to go down and i am a bit happy, the first hour of the plane goes not that slow,so thats minus 2 hours. My flight is late at night and i land in the morning around 11which means that i will sleep atleast 3 hours! That makes up to 5 hours, that leaves us with 3 hours-1 hour for tv or netlix wich leaves me with 2 hours! Lets say that the flight is 4 hours and if i get to sleep that much that will be amazing!

My hesitation for flying is the thought of having a panic attack and being “stuck” on the plane. I used to travel quite a bit for work. But when I started having panic attacks the thought of having one on a plane has prevented me from going on trips. How can I desensitize in my case? Since in my situation, I am not worried about things like what you pointed out but rather just having a panic attack while in flight. And thank you for your wonderful videos!! I have watched several already…very informative, helpful and well made! Watching the drawings is satisfying 😊.

Hi Claudia. What you are describing sounds like panic disorder rather than a flying phobia so its is treated differently and takes a lot longer to overcome. My series on panic attacks will teach you how to overcome the fear of panic attacks. When you no longer fear the panic attack you will find that you can fly again but its not easy. Phobias can be overcome in just a few weeks but anxiety disorders like panic disorder take anywhere between a few months to many years depending on the severity and how long you have had it.

@@TheAnxietyAttic Thank you for your response. I have actually, thank God, been able to overcome my fear of panic attacks but you are right, it was a lengthy, slow and intentional process. I have told her to watch your videos. Especially the series on panic. They are very informative and helpful. Takeoff is the worst for me. I fear that the plane won't be able to lift properly. I usually close my eyes and feel like I'm going to die. I prefer the landings, because those mean that I'll soon be able to leave the plane. But even then I'm a bit frightened. I may look out through the window, see that the ground is really close and think that the plane will miss the runway. Before the flights I usually drink or take a pill to fight the panic. One time, I drank about 5-6 beers and felt quite relaxed, but another time the beer just made me panic more.

planes dont do that. planes on their first certified flight, have their tanks fully filled and payload set up to the maximum weight. the point of positive rate (lifting off the ground) is then put as the runway requirement. a plane is not legally allowed to fly a runway too short for it to take off from. most airports have extra area for planes in the VERY unlikely chance that they do overrun, and this is also shown in the recent tui overrun at leeds bradford airport. hope this helps ❤

Folks try to reassure the panic struck person that flying is safe. This does not work because the panic is not being fueled by probability but by possibility: in other words, is it probable that the door will fly off the plane as recently happened? No but it is possible proven by the fact that it DID happen. So acknowledging that the thinngs that scare folks about flying have indeed happened is an important step because if one just talks about probability being low, the panicked person will not be able to ingest that. I know because many have tried this on me and it makes me more upset that they can not understand why I am scared/panicked.

Exactly right. Statistics are bogus anyways. It's ALWAYS a 50:50 chance. Either it happens or it doesn't. All the fears we have on flights actually DID happen. Just last year the plane in Nepal crashed and Killed everyone on board. That's a legitimate possibility, no matter how small the chances.

That’s not how statistics work. It’s not 50/50 in the slightest. By your logic you’ll either die crossing the next road you come across or you won’t. But if you look both ways and cross when there’s no cars, you’ll be 100% fine. Now imagine the lengths they go to for keeping planes and flying safe. It may not be 100%, but it’s very very very safe. Certainly not 50/50.

Luckily I flew with my 7 yrs old son who turned into a life saver for the flight. He told me that it will be ok mom, and tomorrow will be even better. I couldn’t believe how sweet words could help comfort me to our final destination. However, back to the San Francisco while we were at ours seat. I suddenly feel afraid to fly I couldn’t breathe well. I felt terrified that I may have to go back to the gate with my son. Then, I told the gentleman next to me that I’m not feeling well and could not breathe. He said “ OK “ then he went back to sleep. I told myself I have to make it because it’s about me not something else. It was hard but I made it. I finally found that I have claustrophobic. I afraid to be in a place that I feel trapped. Its happened in my bedroom, car, Car wash places, long tunnel, Trains, MRI. Yes, I still flying from time to time and I have prepared before flying. I will hop on board again this summer! The last time I flew was nearly 40 yrs ago. I had flown many times internationally as a child till older teenager with my mom and sister to visit my maternal relatives in Germany every summer. I hated flying as a kid and got my butt beat onto all 3 flights there and all 3 coming back. I would cry and carry on the entire summer dreading the fact that we had to fly back. My last flight was returning to Chicago from Phoenix. There was a problem shortly after take off with the plane and it was terrifying, we had to make an emergency landing in Denver and get on another plane. ABSOLUTELY no way in hell would I do it. I demanded a refund, rented a car and drove back to Chicago. I haven't flown since. The problem is that my relatives in Germany want to see me, in Germany, so badly. Some of them have visited here a few times and my cousin's son visited us twice this past year while he was in the US for work. He extended his trip just to see us. He and his mother especially, she's the cousin I was closest to growing up, want me to visit so badly. I've agreed to do it but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if at the last minute I just won't do it. Even though it would be a huge financial waste to me I'd figure the ticket cost the same whether I use it or not once it's bought. Or if I actually got on the plane I'd probably get kicked off before take off bc I just know I'll have a massive anxiety attack and act like a psycho. I hate even seeing planes in the sky. I worry about random flights, flights my adult kids are on and flight in general. Intellectually I know that it's safer than driving and all those things BUT in a lifetime of driving all over the country I've never been in an accident, never gotten a ticket, never had any issue, AND I'm at least somewhat in control. I think of random stuff like I wonder how many people on the 9/11 planes, or any planes that have ever crashed, were terrified fliers who finally got on a plane and then came to a catastrophic end. I think about those minutes when you'd know you're going to die in a terrible way and can do nothing to stop it and wished you'd never gotten on the plane. There's just no way I'm going to be able to do it. Mainly because there's not a single thought important enough to make me feel like it's worth it. I wish i could get over this overwhelming fear, but i just don't see how. My husband is very understanding and doesn't think I'm stupid. He says he won't try and talk me into it although he'd really love to go. He wants to see where i spent all my childhood summers and meet all my relatives that haven't visited. I want to do it for him, but i don't know if i can.

I feel so heard 😂EVERY single safety behaviour you described is what I have done my whole life. The inability to eat on the day or night before, lack of sleep, researching the plane models crash history, and especially... the constant paranoia of sussing people out before and during the flight, trying to figure out who's going to cause it to plummet. That has always been the biggest thing for me. It's always been the lack of trust in other people, the pilot, the passengers, the crew.
I'm only 19, I've been on a few 1-3 hour flights by myself and have actually been somewhat fine, but other times I'm scared shitless and extremely suspicious of everyone, constantly reading people's face language. and I HAVE to sit in the window seat to 'keep an eye' on things at all times, it's mentally exhausting.
I think for me, it stems from fear of the unknown, a lack of control and certainly trust in other people.
I had a panic attack at Heathrow Airport a couple months ago, I was about to head on another short-flight solo trip, assuming I'd be okay like the last one only 2 months prior, but when I arrived at the airport, I just had that stomach-dropping feeling like something bad was going to happen to me and I went home like a little wimp. I don't really know why it happened because I'm usually fine going through the airport, but looking back here's my assumptions:
--> Different airport- I've pretty much always flown from Gatwick, which is much smaller and is in the countryside. I found Heathrow extremely overwhelming sensory-wise, noisy, and the giant Aircrafts landing just metres above your head as you're walking in certainly added to the anxiety.
--> Different time- I usually fly out at pretty early hours in the morning when I feel the most calm/ lethargic in a good way, and the airports are quiet (anywhere up until 9am)... this was a 2pm flight this time, with more people around.
--> Different headspace- for the last flight I was taking Ashwagandha months prior to the flight, and meditating alot, so when it came to the morning I was fine, this time I hadn't.
--> Different season- Never flown before in winter months
I think a build up of all the lack of these cues caused this panic attack.
It's exhausting that I feel like I need so much 'familiarity' before a flight, I thought i was getting better with flying and this was a massive setback.
I have such big dreams of going to Asia and Australia one day, but taking the leap onto a long-haul flight is terrifying- that's so much time for things to go wrong. (Which i know is irrational thinking 😭)
    Any advice?

Giving up safety behaviours is the key to beating the fear of flying. The more safety behaviours you have the more anxiety you will have. The problem is when you feel anxious the urge to use safety behaviours is really strong so its a vicious circle. I have made an hypnosis video to help you relax before and during a flight. The suggestions not only relax you but help you to resist using safety behaviours. Give it a try. Here is a link ua-cam.com/video/I5EJJ7-3rtQ/v-deo.html

I have something I call “pre flight anxiety.” This is, where my anxiety builds from the moment I buy the ticket to the moment I am stepping through the jetway and onto the plane. It can get really bad and it doesn’t have any rhyme or reason. I don’t think I’m ever really worried about the plane crashing. However, after flying all over the nation, I have become aware that the sky is a big place and there is plenty of room for the plane to do a number of things and even though the plane is made to handle whatever the sky can dish out, that doesn’t necessarily mean that I am. I’m trying to find ways to cope with this. It’s been a challenge.

I check off all the boxes and then some for fear of flying. I haven't flown in 30 yrs, the last time I flew i didn't enjoy the visit at all I was asking the woman next to me the time every 5 mins, to where she literally gave me her watch to use. I rented a car back. It doesn't help that a friend back in the day was a maintenance mechanic at O'hare, who told me that if i new the "mechanicals" that happened with planes I wouldn't want to fly. i got details. I can't do heights, plane noises, the feeling of falling as the plane descends. i'm ok if i'm connected to the ground. I just finished up a long career I purposely chose that didn't involve any travel. My sister works for an airline and it is of no help. I would never fly in the winter due to the deicing problems i see. My reference may be framed by crashes in my formative years in the 80s. Nevertheless, i did see a "counselor" who was of no help and i didn't even pay the bill. My excuse has been i live in florida, i don't need to go anywhere. Now that i have more time and married an asian, i wouldn't mind travelling, have been looking into amtrak, but i know this is limited and it ain't cheap. and amtrak doesn't go to asia. So we're looking at cruises. i'm get really insecure and depressed when i think about it, so i just block it out. I don't care what/who the pilot is. Mentally I can probably handle an hour tops, but there are few that are that short. I don't know what to do with this, and most of these videos don't help at all. Air travel does seem safer now, but still. I'm willing to try baby steps.

And all I would o is look out the window and think wow look how high up we are and yes is the plane going to crash. I started looking at the flight attendants. But that didn’t help much. The flights attendants kind of saw me in that situation and gave a cup of ice and water, that really really helped me. For the flight back a friend of mine gave me Alprazolam and passiflori, I took both before flight (do no recommend) but I end up so comfortable and calm that when the pilot announced the landing I kind of wish that the flight last a little longer so I get more time to sleep hahaha

While I've caught myself doing some of the behaviours, I've taught myself not to. But my main problem when flying is the sensation. I hate when the plane is taking off, I hate when the thrust is cut in half after the first part of the descent, I hate when the plane turns and like most people I hate turbulence. All of these things make me feel dizzy, like I might pass out. I get this in buses and cars too but without feeling panicky). I've read how planes work and have friends who are avgeeks (two have degrees in aeronautical engineering) and despite understanding it all and rationalising it all (and feeling calm in my own head), my body still freaks out every time. I feel like I have no control over it. The plane bumps and I hear myself gasp or curse or like I'm about to have a wobbly. I'm flying in a few hours and I'm so stressed out.

It's not possible for an aircraft to just "fall out of the air" the wings and engines help you stay afloat, if worst case scenario, let's say both engines fail the plane is just going to keep flying. The wings create lift. The takeoff feeling on the other hand, yeah me too I hate it. But it's actually just your mind playing tricks on you, it might feel like you're falling for a split second or two but in reality you're climbing up into the air as fast as you originally were before you felt that feeling.

My fear is completely different. I know what noises are normal and what are not. I do not look around for faces of passengers or staff. I love airports and planes. I do not fear take off or landings. For me, it is the in between. When you are the highest altitude. My fear is not dying, it is the time that it takes to die when you know you will. 8 minutes for that plane to hit the ground in a fall. I am fascinated by shows like Air Crash Investigations and there are so many simple things that bring a plane down.
Plus, the stat of flying is the safest way to travel is completely skewed. Does not take into account that there are far less planes each day to cars for example or the fact that if your car breaks down, you can simply pull to the side of the road.
Of course, the odds are low. But in my opinion, there is no such thing as an irrational fear when there is a chance that fear can come true.

I made this video 3 years ago and it got very few views so I didn't make any more but recently it has taken off so I may do another one. Maybe an hypnosis video because that is good for phobias. But the best advice I can give is be very aware of the safety behaviours that I mention in the video. Its difficult, but try not to give in to them because they put the mind into a high state of alert that can trigger a panic attack and a flood of catastrophic thoughts that are totally irrational but very believable when in the panic state. (I was so convinced we were being hijacked). If the panic comes, just accept it and remind yourself that the thoughts are just thoughts. They are not facts. So don't seek reassurance that the plane isn't going to crash. Just try to accept them and let the thoughts pass. Its hard but if you can let them pass the anxiety will come down much quicker. The weeks before the flight are crucial. Try to stay off google as it fuels the phobia. I know its really hard not to give in to these behaviours as I used to do it myself but if you can just reduce your safety behaviours by 25%, the next flight will be just a little bit easier. Then reduce them more and more with each flight. When the safety behaviours are gone the phobia will be gone also and you will be able to sleep on a flight just like me. The good news is that phobias are completely reversible but it takes a lot of will power at first.

    • @ac-uh5lo
      @ac-uh5lo 9 місяців тому +2

@@TheAnxietyAttic This was so motivating :') And actually not a lot of people make the link of staying away from the behaviors you seek for reassurance e.g. googling flying safety stats etc. Some people almost encourage it by suggesting you can research into why planes are safe etc. But actually, so far that's not worked for me. I do that more than ever and I am more scared then ever.
So I will try your way. I won't Google anything. My flight is on the 18th. I will avert my eyes from looking at the wings and engine etc when I'm on the flight. I will try to ignore the flight attendants (because I hyper focus on them normally).

Years ago during a long flight, I encountered moments of moderate turbulence. The plane hit a so-called air pocket, shaking violently and it dropped its altitude sharply (estimated 1,500 feet) which scared the shit out of most passengers. I mean there was lots of continuous screaming. I had played rollercoaster rides before though it was never my cup of tea because I got nauseous after my feet are on the ground. If I had to take a wild guess, the G force of this turbulent was 10 times greater??? Anyway, after the plane regained altitude, I felt very sick, shaking and wanting to vomit. Since then, I hate and have great fear of flying. Despite taking Xanax beforehand and sometimes consume half a bottle of wine, I still feel much uneasiness. Every time the plane sways, even due to mild turbulence, I start to build up a panic attack.

Use my hypnosis for flying phobia video leading up to the flight to calm yourself down. Also try hard not to use any safety behaviours that will fuel the fear ua-cam.com/video/I5EJJ7-3rtQ/v-deo.html

This might be the weirdest one you hear or read about in terms of how I developed my phobia. I used to be perfectly fine on planes considering I love roller coasters and I’m not scared of heights whatsoever. However one day on a flight I was looking out the window and a guy behind me was snoring super loud and at a fast pace and my brain completely tricked me into breathing at his rhythm and it was so freaky and unnatural I panicked right away and couldn’t control my breathing. I wasn’t breathing naturally but manually thinking I had to control it otherwise I’d run out of air. Ever since I’ve been super anxious on flights and I don’t go to the bathroom drink or eat on a plane cause I’m afraid I’ll choke. 😊

What about if im just scared of the planes angle, when it takes off, banks right left and the light g forces push me to the seat, or just random turbolance.

    • @TheAnxietyAttic
      @TheAnxietyAttic  5 місяців тому +1

You will likely have small safety behaviours related to these specific fears. It might be as simple as gripping the seat tight with your hands or looking at the reactions of others. Whatever your safety behaviours are try to reduce and eradicate them. The more flights you have without safety behaviours the less anxiety you will experience when flying. This is because when the brain sees that you are not trying to protect it, then it downgrades the threat.

I need some help too. I am not afraid of flying in the plane, but I have panic attacks and feel like I am running out of breath in the plane and feel like I struggling to swallow food or water so I don't drink or eat in the plane. And I also end up spitting a lot. I don't know why/ But I can take the flights at night as I cannot see anything outside as it is dark. A daytime flight is worse for me as I am also afraid of heights. I also have thoughts about being stuck in that small space with no opening of an air passage to breathe. I also cannot sleep on the plane because when I wake up suddenly, I feel I am out of breath and gasp for air a little. PLEASE HELP!

What are you describing sounds like Panic Disorder. There is often a fear of not being able to breathe in panic attacks. I have a very comprehensive video on Panic Disorder. Here is a link ua-cam.com/video/4IPMbY-5g6w/v-deo.html I also have a video about breathing and anxiety that you may find useful ua-cam.com/video/mQwofHXP9i0/v-deo.html

Fear of getting in trouble when you have done nothing wrong is quite common. Its a common form of OCD though many people get these thoughts who do not have OCD.

The other real problem is the lack of control of your environment. IF something goes wrong, you have 0% ability to do shit about it, or to get yourself out of harm's way. You're just sitting in a jet-fueled missile along for the ride. That's what really creates my fear of flying, the lack of control.

Yep. I had a fear of flying before becoming an aircraft mechanic. I thought this job would give me more knowledge and help ease my fear. I was so wrong. I do everything in my power to conduct MX properly and ensure others do as well, but it’s still like magic to me. and I always worry about pilot error 😂
