No Air Compressor Needed Gun Coating With DuraCoat Aerosol

- Learn how to coat your firearm using the DuraCoat Aerosol kit. We show you step by step how to get a quality finish. No air compressor, blast cabinet or bake oven? No problem because you don't need any of that. This kit is truly a diy with no expensive tools needed..
A little painter's trick.....You can control the final look of the "matte" finish by changing the distance you hold the spray can / sprayer from the component you are painting. If you hold the spray can / sprayer close to the component, it will dry with a slightly more glossy/smooth finish. If you spray from a little further back, it will add a little bit of texture and look more "matte". Changing the distance changes the texture of the paint (how it lays on the surface of the object), resulting in slightly different "sheens" of satin/matte. Also, as you can see in this video - if you put on a slightly heavier coat, it will be smoother, vs going with multiple very thin coats, which will give a little more texture to the finish that reflects less light after curing. If you want to experiment with this process, you can buy a can of Aluma-Hyde pretty cheap and play around with it by scuffing some aluminum soda cans with Scotch-Brite and spraying from different distances to find the look you want. Once you get the technique down, you can switch to DuraCoat or Cerakote and get the results you want. Great video - thanks guys!!!
How far back are we talking about to get a more matte look?
@@SkintSNIPER262 Oof lol, a whole year.
Lol
@@SkintSNIPER262about 12-15 inches. Just so that the spray "stream" spreads out and kind of 'dusts' the surface of the part you're coating. Just make sure the last coat you put on has had time to flash dry (10 mins or so).
There's a reason that you should spray it with the stripper before scuffing it up. When you scuff it up without removing the oils and stuff, some of the oils can get down into the scratches and deep enough into the original finish that they don't get cleaned out later. It is best to degrease/clean, scuff, then clean it again.
Who would of thought that following the directions would be the best course of action.... lol
The engineers that developed the product know exactly how to get the best results from their products….highly unlikely that any of us are more knowledgeable than these particular engineers.
Sorry to see you guys aren’t making videos anymore. Loved your content. Very funny.
Obviously that kit isn't designed to refinish a gun the size on AR.
I have been building custom rifles and pistols of all types, makes and models for over 30 years. Watching these two guys work on their projects and listening to them carefully, a true craftsman can tell that these two definitely are the real deal and I can tell true craftsman based upon my experiences with many masters over the years .
That is an incredible complement Scott and I both say thank you.
Actually that Red Scothbrite (320 grit) is more abrasive and would work faster then the green scotchbrite (600 grit)
yeaa the green is deff all purpose but when working with metal that red will do the job twice as fast!
My eyes are burning just watching this, the fumes are coming out of the screen! I love it! Nice job. Turned out great!!!
Blowing the parts off with air compressor after sanding and before spraying the cleaner will get rid of the whole dirt issue all together
I think the point of this video was an example for someone that didn't have a compressor...
@@phantommaggotxxx Im pretty sure he was pertaining to the fact that previously duracoat and cerakote and the like all had to be mixed and sprayed outta a spray gun requiring an air compressor and proper spray gun etc. just to apply the product as to where now it comes in an arresol spray can that u can use any where without a air compressor but I can also see what ur saying also since the name is no air compressor needed hahaha but even then a can of compressed air for electronics and whatnot would be quite useful for blowing off the dust and debris from sanding/scuffing and save alot of hassle and frustration before using the degreaser or whatnot .
@@phantommaggotxxx well thay didnt make a good example
@@phantommaggotxxx On that note, would canned air work as an alternative to a compressor for drying and blowing off debris?
@@atomic_wait It would for the most part, but you may end up going through several cans, so it's not cheap.
I've actually used that once, when I didn't want to break out the air brushes (I hate cleaning those things). It works pretty good. Three coats on a shotgun gave it a tough, quality coat. Apply it thick to those "tight fitting" areas and it ~will~ mess with tolerances. Don't get in a hurry as far as cure time goes. I left my gun hanging in pieces for about a month (patience, Grasshopper). A tip for muzzle breaks or similar devices: Screw a wood dowel into the threaded end, then put your "hanger" through the dowel. It gives you better control for coating, and it keeps the Duracoat out of those threads. It's like painting a popsicle. Good review. "Thumbs up" from this Kentucky boy.
thanks nice tip
Best video I’ve seen for using DuraCoat. I’ve done 6 of my guns using the rattlecan and they all came out great very happy using this stuff.
Thank you, the stuff works great.
There is a reason they suggest cleaning before you sand the parts. It's just like painting a car. If you sand before you clean the parts, you run the risk of sanding grease and other junk into the paint that will blead through your paint job. So, follow the directions.
I know this is old but I do epoxy flooring and all you need is a bucket or pump sprayer and acetone to clean it.
Looks great👌👍 I haven't had a chance to use durakoat yet but have used alumahyde black. I cleaned thoroughly with non chlorinated brake cleaner and dried it off thoroughly with a heat gun and applied the alumahyde then speed cured in a toaster oven at 200 ⁰ for 3.5 hours turned out really nice on my first try. I used an old buffer tube to hold the lower while painting. I just ordered 2 cans of Durakoat for my next build. Thanks, again!
Good luck with your next build and let us know how the Duracoat turns out.
Simple green in a bucket soaking (for very oily parts) an hour then scrubbed less time for new parts then re soaked and scrubbed with a clean tire cleaning brush! Rinse in a five gallon bucket of warm dish soap, it does wonders and with a final hose rinse and after the parts dry then spray with brake cleaner then spray I get the best finishes when I do it that way instead of just the brake cleaner/solvent method
Sounds like it would work good simple green is a wicked degreaser.
Thought brake cleaner is a no no
Post some pictures or videos of them
I'll try that method next time thx for the advice!
Where do you get a 5 gallon bucket of dish soap?
Like watching paint dry. Great video guys 👍
Despite the low caliber jokes, this is one of the best videos on applying Duracoat from a rattle can. Clearly taking your time and having patience are the most important factors in the job, but having a lot of rattle can experience comes in close to “most important.” Thanks for the video, guys.
Thats charging handle is pretty slick. But I grab the original charging handle on my AR on one side of it, I don't do the finger hooks. That would feel more natural for me but an oversized charging handle lever would be my choice because it is cheaper while getting the same result. But the design of that thing is really cool.
Good job on the finish.
Nice project. Thinking about this for my AR 10. Will use the compressor to blow out the debris and follow with brake clean.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
Great video. I am a true novice and was able to apply duracoat to my hand guards following video instructions.
Glad we could help.
Just ordered the blue/black spray kit for my winchester 1912 model, can't wait to try it out.
Let us know how it goes
@@LibertyMarksmanUSA
yes I will for sure!
Does the Duracoat fill gaps between the upper and lower very well? I'm wondering how thick the coat will be when finished? Also, did painting the threaded portions affect assembly? Great video. Thanks.
I did the same treatment to my Mosin Negant, came out great.
Five coats of DuraCoat flashing off the solvents between coats with a heat gun, nothing easier.
That's awesome, how's it holding up for you? It's been a couple years since we did this one. We are very satisfied with how it's lasted. Thanks for watching Chuck.
Thanks for posting that the durability was my main worry. I'm placing my order now.
Great video. But if any one is wanting to do this don't start and stop spraying the durakote on the piece start of a make one straight streak.
Looks like someone knows how to properly spray paint.
That’s for the tip, may you please rephrase the last sentence so I know for sure what you are describing? We’re you referring to making full sprays from one end to the other, or don’t allow time in between coats?
A question. I own a RIA VR60 Semi-auto Mag fed SHOTGUN. Looks like my AR10 on steroids with similar design controls. The VR60 lower receiver and stock is a plastic compond of sort?
■ Will this stuff work on it?
■ Can I mask off the internal trigger stuff, bolt stop, mag release and mag well? I'm not an amourour like you.
■ Barrel and muzzle brake. Any concerns about heat damaging the finish? I pass lots of lead and steel slugs thru it
■ DRY time/cure times. Have trepidations of not a solid rock hard finish.
MY VR60 is more than a weapon. It's a work of art. A propellant blasting/burning oracle if you will that deserves a color enhancement. So glad I found your channel.
☆☆ I think viewers take UA-cam and folks like yourself as the norm.. What you do is priceless as is the flow of visual information. Its like attending classroom education. Hey, I'm a Grandpa and this is all so special. Back in the day it was calls, visits, adverts and book/reference searching to do anything different or unique. Trial and error with lots of errors and dead-end paths. UA-cam is a universe that amazes. I am ordering (2) kits now.
And thanks for what you do. You bring empowerment "WoW I can Do This" and smiles to viewers. How poweful is that. I just subscribed to your channel. God Speed. God bless our Republic and every freedom loving gun owning patriot. Take back our country. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸.
Say, with no disrespect. What actually does that assistant of yours really do? 🤔
Thanks for watching. Let start with the coating. No it's not rock hard and that's a good thing. That way it will not chip. It's also not rubbery feeling ether. It's alot like a epoxy paint. As far as the barrel and muzzle to tape it off. If you are running really hard, it can and will burn off. We have been there and done that. Mask the internals, it will have a build and that can lead to clearance issues. As far as my assistant, also know as my business partner. He is the one you does video prep, all the editing and not to mention he is an actual gun smith. He has built firearms for many law enforcement agencies. As well as many compitition firearms and restorations. Thanks for watching and good luck.
Impressive Partner you have. Inform him please that I am impressed! Also thanks for your input. I am sure my VR 60 will be a success. Your weapon is outstanding.
@@christophergeorge8800 will do and let us know how it turns out.
As a vw guy ...that hood on the bug in the background kills me every time😂
ya wtf? I thought it was a PT Cruiser at first
Ohh god. I only noticed the rear end untill i read this comment. What a mess
That side charger is cool. And i had no idea they made dura coat in a can and it turned out nice. Thanks for the info God bless.
The scotch pad and true strip directions are intended for firearms that may have oils, grease, solvents and crud inside crecaces and such . Stripped AR parts typically don't have this. Firearms that do. Spray-scrub-spray-scrub-spray-dry. You are ready to finish.
I finished a whole can on a CZP10C polymer lower. That was like around 10 coats or more. I have nothin else to coat, so i thought just finish the whole thing. Turn out really good, to be honest it wears just about the same as my cerakoted glock slide.
Nice jod, but u could've put tape in between the picatinny slots that had the numbers, then have the black a d numbers showing along within the FDE. That's how I've done a few in the past.
you guys do a very good job of presentation. this is the 2nd video of yours I've watched
Thank you.
No doubt precleanig all parts with brake cleaner removing all oil and dirt before scuffing. Then blow all parts with compressed air . Then use metal cleaner with kit. Then spray all parts with Duracoat finish according to instructions
I just coated mine tonight. I barely had enough to finish. I agree with what was said in the video. DuraCoat says 4oz is enough for one rifle, I disagree, I almost didn’t make it on an 11.5 AR build.
Let us know how it turned out!
Thank you for this video, just found your channel and am just now getting into coating my firearms. Hoping this comes in Magpul Stealth Grey.
Good video, Thanks. Maybe ScotchBrite is not the best abrasive. Something that won't leave fibers would be better.
(BTW, Grownmen do not wear their baseball caps backwards.)
Who said we have grown up
A slick trick for runs Duct tape just lay it so lightly on the run and lift then RESPRAY
I like to use brake cleaner as a preclean. It has a powerful stream to remove oil and such.
I know the package said it can be assembled after 24 hrs. How long did y’all wait before assembly. Thanks guys
Two days.
I believe metal is pretty pouris. Allot of gunsmith will tell u to de grease the gun first to avoid sanding it in. I'm pretty sure might not really make a crap. But I would just dawn wash that shit. Sand it. Then spray with that degreaser
Looks good! How well does it hold up to scratches and every day use??? Thank you!
Holds up very well, this was done a few years ago and still looks great
GREAT WORK. I'm now ready to tackle my builds.... plan on three at a time using one can then another can for second coat, and third can for coat three. this way shouldn't have can spill over problems.. wish me LUCK.
ALL BLACK RIFLES MATTER
After scotchbriteing, get the shop air on it to blow all that crap off there then use the brake clean then the DuraCoat cleaner, just my suggestion.
Thanks for doing this. I think one kit will do up to two guns? I guess price no option, cerakote. Too cheap for duracoat, then cold blueing
It would be close on two.
You guys are one of my top 5 favorite gun channels. Entertaining and to the point. KEEP IT UP!!
Thank you that's what we try to do.
That turned out really well!
You need to order a whole case of D.A.K. yellow and decorate that Volkswagen sitting in the background! 👍
Thank you, That's a great idea now if I can talk Scott in to it...
Gonna need a big ass oven for that...
Serious question...don't you want to cover the threads on the upper receiver with painter's tape or something like it?
You can if you want to. The product is so thin that we have never had a problem. If you put it on thicker than recommended, then you could have a problem.
Rinse the parts in a mild soapy solution before degreasing.
Good movie, and grate VW beetle with Wunderbug kit! Had one of them in my workshop. I Painted my AK with plastidip, good stuff for grips, not grate for reciver body.
Thank you, I believe you are the only one to recognize the Wonderbug kit. Good eye and thanks for watching.

I think the reasons they want you to trustrip the part first so your not sanding gun oil into the part. Just my opinion. Hiw is it holding up
It has held up great.
Did you have any trouble fitting the pins in? If you done it again would you tape certain parts off like threads or holes?
We had no problem but if you did just polish the hole with 1200 grit sand paper. Just be careful not to scratch the surface. Best to put down some masking tape.
Cracked me up
I was lighting up at the same time he said smoke um if ya gotum
Glad we made you laugh!!!
Awesome videos guys. Do you remember what Dark Earth you used. They’ve got a bunch of them.
Magpul fde
Wow guys this turned out great, love the finish. Gonna be using this kit on my ccw just to spice it up a bit lol
Let us know how it turns out.
This is a good alternative if one doesn't have a compressor however. Durakote simply doesn't hold up like Cerakote.
Exactly
I like ODG better but that is a great looking FDE! It almost loooks like a light green?
We have and like both
And as far as the scotch bright still on there you can rinse with water first and then the solvent!
Yous guys did a FANTASTIC job for rattle cans, but I feel like the finished product is too glossy. JMHO. Nice work! 👌🏻
I use SEM SOLVE in a spray bottle to clean parts. I have had good results with it. Thanks for the video, enjoy your channel.
Thank you we might have to try that stuff.
I love Y’all’s channel man. Keep it up!!
Thank you
Very nice. As much as FDE puts me to sleep, it turned out very smooth.
Thank you, I keep telling him its time to move on.
Liberty Marksman fde ftw
How did this hold up?.. never mind I see a Two year later video
This was hilarious. So glad I came across it. Great work.
Thank You
In here doing research on cerakote and duracoating my stuff, this was informative, but I have to know, as a lefty, what and where can I find that charging handle?!?
Devil Dog Concepts, hard charger.
WARMING YOUR PARTS BEFORE COATING HELPS WITH DURABILITY HERE TOO
How hard was it to push in the pins. Did the paint make it harder to get them in?
It was not to pad, just tryed not lay it on really heavy in those spots.
Uh, Dark Earth colour is the new BLACK. OH THANKS for your vid.
I'm thinking they want you to degrees before you start so you're not just rubbing grease and but if you have new parts that would be kind of pointless.
Those red scotch brite pads are a heavier grit I guess you would call it. that's probly why they wanted you to use that.
But either way awesome job. A lot better idea than sending my stuff off to somebody that I don't know if I'm ever gonna get it back. Being able to do something yourself is so much more rewarding then paking someone to do it.
Gave a like for the ddc hard charger!
Wow I really like that side charging handle and awesome paint job.
Thank you we will be doing a video on the side charger soon.
Buy an air compressor and blow it off after sanding
Its a pretty common step in painting anything. You tube has videos that show how to paint....
What FDE did you use? I see twenty different FDE finishes on duracoats website. Thanks
We used the Magpul FDE color
“Never seems to amaze me” 😝
And still makes sense
Glad I’m not the only one to laugh at that!
GHOSTFACERS!
Tape off the threads?
thank you for the video I was wanting to do this to my pistol going to do it in red and black and wanted to see if aerosol can would work good with this or not and it looks like finish is grate so thanks again.
Thank you James if you end up doing it send us a pic we would gladly share it on our Facebook and Instagram to help you show it off.
I use that cheap carburetor cleaner for mine works super good for getting duracoat from the airbrush too.
We will have to try that next time we always have a few cans around it works great on getting carbon off BCG.
does it feel sticky on your fingerpads? sometimes spray painted items are a bit tacky
Not at all
Jay and Silent Bob question. Could you do a follow up on this rifle after shooting it to.aee how the coating has held up? If any cracking peeling, fading ect ?

whats the difference between duracoat and a normal rustoleum spray paint?
Duracoat is an epoxy urethane, way more durable then spray paint.
@@LibertyMarksmanUSA thanks my friend, great vids
Thank you!
I just painted my rifle using cerakote C and preval aerosol applicator.. I'm hoping it comes out good just on first coat right now.
What is the charging handle called and where can I purchase one. I have a scope on my Ar15 and that charging handle would make it a lot easier.
Its called the hard charger by devil dog concepts.
Thank you
New skin sucks, just plain super glue works better for cuts, but clean the cut really good. It will still burn a bit lol.
Take care,
Be safe.
Thanks for the tip!!!
so.. the truStrip..how much does that differ from Brake cleaner? I'm guessing it's more expensive than Brake Cleaner, and as your video shows.. doesn't seem to do the job as well as Brake Cleaner either.
Thanks for the tip of the residue that brake cleaner leaves behind.. as I wasn't aware of that.. but thinking back to the 3 things I've painted after using brake clean, I do recall 2 of them having a very mild texture.. maybe from the residue you mentioned.. however it was in no way an issue or ugly. :) thanks for the video.
$80 worth of paint since i plan to use odg and dark earth, cheap break cleaner ,scuf pads and time, not bad indeed beats paying someone else $300 for sure.
Nice job guys, might have to give it a try as I understood you to say it cost about $40 for the kit. I'm usually a lot shorter on time and patience than you gents so that's why all my ARs so far have just gotten the rattle can camo, but I actually dig that look too. If I ever buy/build an expensive AR (not likely) I'll definitely go your route.
After a few years how's the coating holding up under use?

You guys did a good job. I might do this to my precision rifle.
looks so good i'm actually seriously considering doing the same thing. THANKS!
If you do it you need to send us a pic!!!
Which is better Duracoat or Cerakote? I have only ever used Duracoat.
How long you can store that canister after using it?
Turned out great! I used DuraCoat to completely redo an M1 scope, M84, and it looked brand new when I finished. The scope was completely rusted, COMPLETELY, so It took me about 3 days to get it all cleaned up and ready for the DuraCoat. Great product!
Will this stuff make engraved markings in the weapon disappear? Or will they still be seen through?
If you apply it right you will still see them. If not you did it way to thick and it will probably crack and flake off.
This looks amazing. Great job. Did you have to wait the full 30 days before you got to shoot it or what was the time frame that it was fully cured? I just ordered some for my own personal project and I am curious to know.
Is it necessary to put down a layer of duracoat primer if you plan to laser engrave on it at a later date?
You guys are a good laugh, and love the information in the videos
So , how has the finish held up since you made this vid?? Did it scratch. Chip easy or is it hard like powder coating?
If you scroll through the comments they answer that question.
U2 are dynamic duo, I can't stop laughing at your cynism, beside you are actually showing us great stuff,,,thanks for your dedication to the issue,, lol
Thanks for watching
Why not use a air compressor and blow off most of the dust and debris then use the spray cleaner they supplied?
Most air compressors will collect and put out some moisture. You don't want water on the metal. You could get some canned compressed air, but make sure they guarantee no moisture.
I really love the practical and how-to videos. Keep up the good work.
We will Thank you
