    Brian & Camera Crew, I no have never commented on any video before but I just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work and the educational videos you provide for all of us out here and me who is just learning about this hobby. They have been very informative for me and a huge help for this guy who is challenged a bit in the learning department. So I hope you keep doing this because I have learned more from you than anybody.
    Thanks again

    I've watched a lot of your videos. Very informative. I watched this video twice and the Apprentice S 1.2m once and decided on looking for apprentice S 1.2m RTF on ebay auction. Found one that had damage to the left aileron and the servo gears were stripped. Hot water took care of the aileron and I bought a new servo (Horizon Hobby). The Apprentice S 1.2m was fully intact. Still factory sealed. Last year, I bought 2 cheap Chinese RC Airplanes. First one, I hand launched, went 10 feet, took a sharp Right turn, the nose dive into the ground. I was a "One and done" for a month. Bought a different Chinese cheap RC plane and had a great deal of trouble trying to fly. So, I was done again for a few months. Your videos convinced me to go with Horizon Hobby and Spektrum. That changed my life. I bought a UMX Sport Cub S 2. It was like a DREAM flying that one. Liked it so much I bought another UMX Sport Cub S 2 in case I needed parts. Second one will be for my grandson this spring. I will only buy Horizon Hobby and Spektrum. I also bought FMS Cessna 182 1400mm, Mini Aeroscout, and UMX Torbo Timber. I'll be looking for an RC Flying Club to join this spring. I've also read up on AMA rules, whatever you call them. It's common sense stuff. My goal is to save money to buy a Valiant. Loved the way it looks. Many, many thanks for your videos. You are an inspiration to so many people who want to get into this hobby.

    Hi, thank you Brian and crew. I haven't flown RC aircraft sense 1993, I will be 77 Feb. 16, 2022. I have a piolets license for real planes and I would rather fly RC than setting in the piolets seat of a real plane. When I started out flying RC I had to build the tube transmitter and the receiver from kits, then things got easier when the transistors came along and could buy the equipment ready made. I flew up till 1995 then due to work and family I had to set my RC aside . I am retired from the Navy and just getting back into RC again and shocked by the advanced technology. I bought the Apprentice 2.1 RTF, a NX10, a an AR8020 Receiver , 4 LiPo batteries and other things. I so enjoy your videos on the build and flying the Apprentice 2.1 RTF aircraft. I just received the Apprentice 2.1 RTF today. I watch and enjoy all your video's. Again thank you Brian and crew for your video on the build and flying the Apprentice 2.1 RTF aircraft.

    I often leave the TV on at night for "boring", previously viewed movies, etc. to lull me to sleep. This particular video (Apprentice S2 1.2m RTF) woke me at 2 AM this morning and I continued to watch too long... You and Megan remind me of the years my wife Terry and I had flying RC with our friends, ending in 1985 when we left my R&D work in NY for same company manufacturing in AL. About a year prior to her death (March 2020) she asked me to resume RC flying with her favorite, the Corsair. Last year, in her honor, I BUILT a Bridi Trainer 40 from short kit and plans. There's a photo of us "in the cockpit" converted to electric (AR630, with SAFE & AS3X) but I'm afraid to fly & turn it back into a kit. Learning about foam, I found a used Apprentice 1.5 at a local club swap meet getting me back into the game with a Spektrum DX6e and am now transitioning from SAFE to AS3X to become proficient before moving on to the Bridi 40 and eventually the Corsair (through your link?). THANK YOU AND MEGAN for bringing me back and reminding me of the enjoyment that Terry and I shared so long ago.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC

      Allen - Your story is an inspiration to me. Thanks for sharing it. Sorry you lost you wife. I know some day when I lose Megan, it will be the worst day of my life, so I hope God call me home first, so she can finally be free for a calm afternoon - LOL - but seriously, cool story, and hope you don't "turn it back into a kit" - bet one liner, I've heard in a while!!!
      P.S. If you want to use an AR637T in that Bridi 40, there's no reason why you couldn't have SAFE and AS3X in there. So long as you get all the settings right, should practically fly itself!!!
      Either way, glad we could be part of your journey, and we're very glad you're here with us Allan!

    • @65Max
      @65Max 2 роки тому

      Currently there's an AR630 with a DX6e but for some reason it's not possible to get 3 FMs with that combo so full SAFE with control limits and AS3X with no limits should work OK. Need to work more with my Apprentice on AS3X only. Terry still inspires me to do all I can with what I have left.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Hi Brian, I flew my Apprentice 2 last Sunday and she flew like a dream. I took off and it was like that old feeling came back and flew it well with no problems. I did have problems with the nose wheel, first the clevis pin sheared off. I replaced that and this Sunday back at the club flying field had problems with the set screw on the nose wheel coming lose. I have never had such problems before. I took the cowl off, tightened the set screw and took off again. Love flying this plane.

      GOLD STARS Michael!!!!! Thank you sincerely!
      We love sharing not only what we're doing, but HOW we're doing it...from showing HOW we arrive at our conclusions on how to fix issues we find in the planes, but also HOW we ended up and HOW we take care of this new property, that's become a large part of our lives. We love to hear that you're watching the whole videos!!!
      UA-cam DOES punish us since our audience retention rate is low...like 15 minutes on a 3-5 hour videos...so if we ever do want to grow faster, we'll have to make "Shorter" videos, and miss all the "GOOD STUFF" if you ask me ;)
      Thanks Michael!!!

      @@BrianPhillipsRC I put in ten flights since yesterday and it is remarkable how low it can go and the stupid manoeuvrers I do which would have crashed almost any other plane, but with the Apprentice it recovers exceptionally well.

    I picked up another Apprentice S 1.2m. It was used and abused. They hit something, both sides of the main wing, deep gouges on both sides, and ripped off the wing pulling the front rubber band hold down stick, which is missing (bought new set). Plus it did a nose dive into the ground, shattering the cowling. Rebuilt and reinforced with coffee stir sticks and foam board from Dollar Tree. Nice and solid now. This Apprentice was sold as totally trashed and only electronics were good. So, I got it... cheap. I had more enjoyment out of repairing this plane.
    I remember you saying to twist the main wing to keep wires up and away from the servos. I fixed that by making a styrofoam (styrofoam plates) dog house for the servo's. Measurements, 3 pieces 50X50mm. That's 2 sides and 1 for the top. Fits nicely, slid down into the groves on both sides of the aileron and rudder servo's. Used a coffee stir stick and cut so that it would go half way through each side of the fuselage to hold down the servo's dog house. Sparingly use Foam Tack to glue stir stick to the top styrofoam dog house (styrofoam picnic plate). Works awesome.
    Plus I installed an on/off switch to turn receiver on after battery is plugged in and set level on the ground, like the Apprentice S 15e and Apprentice STS. I've done that to 4 other of my planes. I also put an on/off switch on my Sport Cub S V2. I like having on/off switches. Makes it easier to manage for me.
    Thank you again for all the instructional videos. You are a very good teacher with great information.

One of which did not apply to warranty. So I received a denial of warranty email I responded kindly but told them I disagreed and why but that I respected the decision made. They re-reviewed my claim and warranted the product. In retrospect. It was 50/50. Either way was fair. Long winded point is they are awesome. They are pricier but for very good reasons. I love camera crews (Megan’s) nail color. Very nice. She’s a great flyer, you go Megan. Nate was flying a V900, he got rid of it because he hand launched it into the ground, he sold it to a friend, I told him how Brian launched it vertical vs horizontal, Never heard back from Nate, some bad blood going on. The noise that pusher prop makes while doing a full speed dive makes me a little chubby. That being said to people with no planes yet, This one Will Never Disappoint. @@wisecoonieFirst of all, your definitely on the path to success if you are watching BrianPhillipsRC. Any plane i own i watch Brian's videos for build and set-up. Great questions and concerns. When you take your first nose dive the Apprentice won't look much like a plane either. Your going to damage the motor, propeller and possibly more with a standard front prop. Watch some videos of advanced pilots what they can do with the AeroScout. I have never flown before in my life and just by watching a few videos I had many successful flights with that plane. Listen to the power of the Scout. I have crashed badly multiple times and with some clear tape my Scout was back in the air. My front wheel is dangling like a turd and she still lands and turns. Left turns only but whatever. It's definitely your preference, but from what I have seen, the Scout brings reliability, stability, affordability, and the best part, you won't leave her at home often because once you progress this thing is a beast. And do like me, if you can't pick one buy them both..!! Get my number from Brian😉 Call me any time.

    Brian and Camera Crew (Megan). 1st and foremost you guys are awesome. 2nd the FAA sucks. The FAA has convinced me to allow this hobby to wither away and die. I will not spend any more money on this hobby. I used to drive 12 miles every day and spend 2-3 hours each day flying my planes but these days I can't afford my club membership or the gas ($3.87 - $4.13 or more depending on how the wind blows that day) to get to the flying field. I haven't flown my planes for over a month. At this rate they will never die they will just occupy space that we could find better ways to use.
    I'm not saying goodby because I truly do enjoy watching you and living vicariously through you.
    The FAA knows who I am. They know where I live. They have my phone number and email address and now they want me to fly in restricted locations. They want me to install new hardware that I will be forced to pay for so that ANYONE could use their smartphone and an app to track my plane and my location. My privacy and safety is worth more to me than complying with the FAA regulations and licensing designs.

    So Brian, you've been very complimentary about Horizon Hobby tech support. I wish I could share the enthusiasm. I don't know how long since you've worked with them, but they're transitioned to an all digital Tech Support. They will try to resolve the problem via on-line chat, and then if that fails they will form a committee and vote whether you're worthy of a phone call. I have been trying for four days to find resolution to a problem I'm having with my Apprentice S 2 to no avail. It started as an email exchange with their weekend representative on Sunday, October 3rd; then transitioned to on-line chat for an hour on Monday. After chatting with at least three reps on Monday, I was about to schedule a call for Tuesday, but the chat line dropped off after 10 minutes due to "inactivity". What? So now I'm in major frustration after submitting a call-back request on Monday, and I have not heard a peep out of them, and today is Wednesday. I will give them today for a reply, then I'll start the whole process over again. This is NOT the Customer Service I expected after you've given them such high marks.

      I will bring this up with my contacts. This MUST be fixed, but I implore you that ALL companies support SUCKS BAD right now. I think what's happening is they can't find people to work...which is a super-strange symptom of paying people to NOW work - Who would of thunk???
      Not making excuses, but I can say It's been a while since I called....maybe 6-7 months. I did have a chance to get through to a human with a call back, but you DO have to be persistent. This WAS admittedly many months ago...so not saying this hasn't changed, but with my experience, and the huge volume of people I talk too...I've heard people calling and getting things resolved....so I hope yours is a VERY isolated issue.
      DO NOT INITIATE A CHAT - CALL. Put in your phone number if you can't wait, and expect it to come when you're in the crapper or in front of your boss...that's when I get calls back....or if you want, let it sit on hold for hours. This is what I do.

      You can use the Habu RTF radio for other DSMX equipped planes. DSMX is the protocol for the receiver and transmitter, but if you're gonna get a RANGER, you'll need a receiver (pick a DSMX equipped Rx), so you COULD just use the DXs that comes with your Habu. It's not the easiest way of doing things, since typically you need a computerized transmitter to get everything to work out.
      My tip...pick one of these (below), and then just move between the RTF's, only buy the BNF (Bind and fly) for the next plane, so you can work your way into NEEDING an NX8 (the computerized transmitter that I use).

    I was a bit torn about ordering this, the Twin Otter or the Valiant. I am not a entirely new pilot. My dad's been in the hobby for all of my upbringing. He has been pushing to get me in for many years, and i did dabble a few years, flying a PT-19. Was doing pretty okay. Learned to fly relativatly confidently. So I know I can fly a plane. Although I am not confident and relaxed, expecially now being away from learning for a few years. So I was unsure if I should go for a real trainer model like this Apprentice or a more intermidiate model like the Otter. I love the scale and looks of the Otter. But I ended up ordering the apprentice. It's nice to have a RTF. However I'm pretty sure I'll be ordering a proper NX6 in no time :S

      This will help your confidence, and you'll be able to LOVE every second of it. Never discount a "trainer"...I still love flying them!!! Every time I get my hands on the sticks for one of these planes, I just love it...so relaxing, and easy!

    Subscribed to this chanel and i like the part you do talk alot and explain lots of things which is great for beginners. Am new to RC airplanes and this is my 1st real plane (have eachine spitfire & zero). This video (amongst the others) made me buy this actual plane. I was looking for something bigger than 400mm warbirds to learn how to fly cause i want to fly +800mm warbirds and to do that i need to be a better pilot. I did fly real plane in the 90's so i know how controls work.
    Keep up the good work Brian

Of the hundreds of your videos watched, I've never seen so many shots of empty sky and driveway, sans plane, as when Brian has the camera. I love when the camera crew flies! awesome video with lots of great information. so what plane? what are the differences between the Apprentice 1.2 & 1.5 besides the additional 12" of wingspan?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Рік тому +1

      Bigger makes a big difference, but the 1.2m is just fine if you want the easier to transport, and slightly newer design.
      It's all in the eye of the beholder. And bigger tends to be easier to see, and easier to fly slower.

      If you want too, you can, or just leave it be. I'd leave it be for sure. These things can move so when you hook up the lipo, it's not gonna get stressed too much. It's a foam body, after all, so kinda like packaging you coffee in the coffee cup - LOL ;) JK, it's not necessary, unless you want some peace of mind.

    Hi Brian I've finally shortlisted by first beginner plane based on you're really helpful list. They are ;;:: Aerscout rtf, carbon club s2 and finally the apprentice you are flying here.!!!! Could you briefly note you're pros & Cons of these 3 selections and if you had to which order would you place 1, 2, 3 these particular selections.? I promise to keep you updated on what I finally purchase after you're reply. Thanks Bud

    • @BrianPhillipsRC

      Just get one. You're going to love any of the three.
      You will LOVE them all!
      I'm telling you...stop waiting and order one. It doesn't matter which one you get, you will love it.
      I think the best option is the Aeroscout 1.1m RTF...but that's because I know you'll be flying it for a short while and want to move into the Apprentice 1.2m or the Carbon Cub S2 next.
      There's a progression to these things, and I know what you're trying to do....please, do yourself a favor and just pull the trigger on one, and you will thank me later ;) You will LOVE IT!
      Pros and Cons are like listing off what your like about Kid #1 vs Kid #2 vs Kid#3 - you love them all equally, but we all have our favorites - we just don't know what makes them our favorite until it happens ;) LOL

    i've been flying the Apprentice S2 for a couple months now and have two 1300Mah packs. I need more flying time and am going to buy a third pack. I see in this vid that you switched out to a 2200Mah pack. What did this swap do? Get you more air time? More power? On a side note, I timed you on vid from the time you took off until you landed and you got 14 minutes of flight time before the last green LED started blinking. Amazing! I never timed my flights, but I probably only get 7-8 minutes, but I'm always flying with a pretty good breeze, so I have the throttle at 50-60% all the time.

    • @leonelarribanca4583
      @leonelarribanca4583 2 роки тому +1

      I've bought an extra 2200mAh and almost double the flying time, depending how much you manage the throttle. More time more fun.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 роки тому +2

      mAh = CAPACITY - more flying time in exchange for a heavier pack
      C = how fast you can charge it / discharge (use) it
      S = Number of cells in Series - determines how many volts the pack is (3S = 3 Cells in Series X 4.2VDC Per Cell = 12.6VDC Charged)
      When going to a 2200mAh you will gain some flight time, since it's about 70% larger, but you will increase the payload in the plane, thus giving up some level of efficiency...so you'll gain something like 50% MORE or about 1/3 more flight time, in my estimation. Also, you'll have more power to back you up as you punch the power, before the pack draws down, and you'll have less time to "recovery", which is something you'll understand better in about 4-5 more years of flying, and especially with EDF jets, where you load the HECK out of them on unlimited vertical climb outs.
      So basically, when you go from 1300 to 2200 - it's more flight time, but a bit more weight too, but the weight change is small in comparison to the gain in capacity...thus it is a NET improvement.

      Many of the smaller planes we fly do prefer smooth strips, but as you get bigger, so do the wheels. This 1.2m would do okay on well manicured strips, like those at clubs. I don't always keep my grass as short as I'd like, since I now have to move 7 bikes, and a 60hp tractor, to get my zero turn out of the garage - LOL
