We Tried Crazy Old School Boxing Exercises
Old school boxers were built differently. And fighting in this developing sport took courage, hands of stone, heads like cinder blocks and a variety of physically taxing exercises. Exercises which helped to create legends such as Joe Louis, Max Baer, Jack Dempsey, Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali.
In this video, we will attempt to try these exercises for ourselves: chopping trees, digging holes, jumping rope, using medicine balls and more, all in an attempt to see if we can keep up with an old school boxing workout routine. Wish us luck.

Compared to some of the people from the YT fitness community, you guys seem to be the most original and entertaining channel in the world. Stay buff... and fun. YEAH!!! 💪
Thank you Kenrick, appreciate that. 💪
Agree!
@@buffdudes Also wanted to say you guys are doing a great job! That's why it really surprised me that you guys are promoting that scam of a jump rope.
@@user-ft5ux3fb3b How is jump rope a "scam"?
It is objectively a high-intensity exercise, it is great for your heart and lungs, and it allows you to move freely at all times.
Every channel is like this apparently 😂
Been training 40 years! Whenever I need MOTIVATION I check this channel and the RAGE is back thanks guys!!!
That makes us really happy to hear! Thank you!
My elementary school gym teacher always said the best piece of fitness equipment was the cheapest, a jump rope. He later had a gym named after him at a college. He was an awesome guy. Amazing double jumps! That's really hard!
People don’t want to jump rope because it is hard and intense!
@@domepiece11actually very simple
@@domepiece11just requires lot of practice
Running is morr intense i use to box and i could jump rope all day@@domepiece11
You have to remember, these were body conditioning exercises from the days of bare knuckle fighting. These guys made themselves into iron that could endure great amounts of pain and grueling endurance.
Off of the top of my head regarding old school boxing:
John L Sullivan - he was the birth of the sweater. He would jog with a think long sleeve shirt to induce sweating. We now use it to keep warm.
Joe Louis would run six miles the day before a fight.
Tony Galento was Nick named two ton Tony due to him being an iceman. He would carry blocks of ice up NYC apartment stairs to make money. He needed to sell two tons a day to earn enough money to raise his family (each block was fifty pounds)
George Foreman usd to walk ten miles behind a pickup truck and punch a heavy bag hanging from the truck.
I swear the medicine ball has to be a troll from older trainers. You do all this practical, real world, based training (digging holes, chopping wood etc), then they're like; 'Now, you need to dive abs first onto a solid ball'... doubt they kept a straight face.
Haha we were thinking the same thing. 😄
@@buffdudesI think it's about tensing the abs before impact😂
They did it to condition the core to take body punches. If you can't take a punch to the body ....you shouldn't be in a ring.
If you had ever taken a punch to the gut you would realize how applicable this is
It actually makes plenty of sense. It's trying to replicate getting hit in the stomach. Usually they would have another person slam the medicine ball into them. Boxers still 100% do this. But if you are working out by yourself it will work to give impact. Also there is plenty of evidence that impact like that does actually stimulate those muscles in ways that direct ab exercise doesn't, plus you learn to exhale on impact.
So just to clear up something. Old school boxers DID have other shoes other than work boots or combat boots and in fact most of them didn't run in them, but people like Marven Hagler would intentionally wear boots to make his workouts harder. He wanted to add that artificial difficulty because he knew that when he was in the ring wearing his boxing shoes he would be moving even faster and it would take less effort and he could focus all his energy on the fight.
Awesome video as always! Hope to you guys do more boxing related vids in the future!
Same principle as the gladiators weighted training weapons
As a lifter and boxer (and fan of oldschool boxing history) i love you guys for this man
Chopping wood is imo THE most underrated strength building exercise of all time, sledgehammers great too
I completely lost it at the ball exercise! 😂😂😂 You Guys are awesome!
You guys are still making quality content idk why the algo hates you
Love to see you doing authentic Roman Gladiator training techniques!
why don't you guys try tyson's workout
You guys are in the best shape of your lives. Well done!!
awe seeing you walk your husky reminds me of me when i used to take my husky named Mia out with me when running or walking
sadly she passed in october last year from an undiagnosed cancer and what not. She was my workout pal for the past 2 years prior to her passing
Her energy is still with you Keep on Keepin' on.
Man watching Hudson throw himself on a medicine ball for a minute straight had me dying 😂 😂 you guys are awesome, always the best and most entertaining videos
That's how I built a lot of my muscles back in the last military period: wood cutting, wood chopping, barrel carrying, regular food, regular sleep.
After a hard work out.. family is asleep, and i stopped playing Baldurs gate 3 because Im falling asleep and I have work tomorrow. It is good to end the day with this video, a good laugh and the steady and constant Buff Dudes!
I feel like I lost 10 pounds and I have a limp just watching you both.
Running in work clothes/boots reminds me of work, running stairs while listening to fire alarms as a fire alarm technician. What a workout! Interesting video again guys.
Awesome dudes! I love seeing you guys test your strength like this
Buff Dudes! I hope all is going well. Been following the channel for awhile and it is really nice seeing y'alls consistency through the years and also how y'all change things up. I've struggled staying consistent with eating for years but y'all are still an inspiration to do better. I just started paying for prepped meals and I thought that may make an interesting video if y'all tried a meal prep service. Hope y'all have a good day!
I love exploration here of old workouts and exercise routines. Really interesting and educational.
Haha this was the best episode since a while.
I think Those Old school Boxers had amazing endurance and toughness.
Great vid dudes!
Your doggy might need shoes on the hot asphalt! Check his paws are not getting cracked!
Thank you Benny! We did that one pretty early in the morning but you're right, it does get pretty hot during the mid day. We'll make sure and be mindful of it! 💪
7:20 -use heavy bag to make body get used to been hit. just push it and catch it with your torso. medicine balls are used by throwing them to your trainingpartners midbody while he is keeping his muscles tight.
Okay that's some sweaty Rocky IV musculature at 5:53 so you clearly succeeded!
Huge fan here! I love your videos, you've actually inspired me to start my own channel recently. Your videos have been super motivational for me on my journey. I would be honored to work out with the buff dudes someday. Stay BUFF!!!! 💪🏋️♂️
My favorite, Dudes ever. thank you for putting out new info.
Hudson's body fat percentage is looking great. Tremendous cut!
It's crazy that these guys used to do this, get into a fight where one person gets a severe concussion, then go to work in the morning.
Thanks!
Thank YOU! 💪😎
Would love to see real boxing training! Always good to know how to throw hands and get a workout in too 👌
It's never too early or too late to start boxing. Great workout and cements that confidence.
My boxing coach has been training people for about 55 years. He has us doing a lot of these. Except for the clothes stuff. Lol
Bcz probably every one knows lose light clothes better for running and we always had that the boxer you saw on vid they got dressed up for shooting a vid 😅😂

Breathing out softenss the hit ?
Love seeing the buff dudes jumping rope!
Hello dudes, have you ever thought on making a video documentary on ancient greeks fitness lifestyle, would be very interesting, greetings from 🇲🇽
I hate digging in Central Oregon. I live on a plate with about 3 inches of dirt on top. Anytime we need to dig a post hole we have to have a pick, sledge, and pry bar standing by as well as a wheel barrow to haul everything away. Lava rock is my nemesis growing up and my parents would often punish me for being unruly by telling me to "go pick rocks," as a form of punishment.
I don't know if its just me, but this video gave the vibes of a GOOD Discovery show. It felt kinda nostalgic.
Awesome Dudes doing awesome stuff! Stay buff always!!
The medicine ball deal is also how Hudson created his kids.
I love Hudson's random boxing between 1:06-1:16, lol.
An ex England rugby player, Nigel Redman tells a hilarious story about training at a Turkish gym where the proprietor would hit him with wooden paddles as he worked out 💪 😅
I remember when i was boxing we'd beat the piss out of each other with medicine balls, best was we formed a circle and pass a ball around by slamming it into the person next to you
Need some medicine after the Medicineball fight. You guys are freaking awesome.
When you guys were digging and hit solid rock, that’s when the mattock comes out and you smash through the rock. KEEP DIGGING! Digging and wood chopping/splitting is where true KO power is built. Also if you feel beat up after training- Epsom salt bath, use 5-10 lbs of Espom salt and soak for 20-30 minutes.
Awesome hey you guys should do Karl gotch pro wrestling workout or Hindu wrestling workout 3:42
Thanks for the suggestion we'll check them out!
Love the video buddy, wonderful
Damn Hudson you look amazing bro! Your physique is better and better any time i see you
1:09 lol the dog
Dude I've been watching this channel for awhile and didn't realize you were fellow Oregonians.
I'm in Spingtucky (Springfield, OR)
I saw your video where you did a road race in Eugene, but I just figured y'all traveled.
I'm 42 now and do mostly calisthenics and moderate weightlifting 5 days a week, when I was in my 20's I was a hod carrier and that job along with a good diet kept me in really good shape year around.
I would love to know what went through any curtain twitchers minds when they looked out the window and saw hudson running in full clothes shadow boxing like a mad man 😂
muscle developed boy, love it
Great post, looks like a good if not painful time was had 👍
I wanted them to try hitting the heavy bags and doing boxing combos
Medicine ball: and that honey is how i met your dad
Some of the Old-School boxing training. Is really good & Tough the one I'd, Prefer is bouncing on the.Medcine ball I've tried that a couple of times, it hurts but it's really good Excerse, 👊
the digging holes part seem quite light, look at the dusty sand ... Try hard packed clay
You should flip it for the next video and try out the most modern boxing training techniques and see how they compare.
Imagine living in that neighborhood, Seeing two dudes run down the street in work gear, then last month dressed as Indiana Jones.
🤣🤣💪
Another great content video looking trim bro’s
Finally someone notices who max baer is
Jumping rope is awesome
Those work boots were made differently "back in the day" also the roads were dirt, much softer after miles...
great video!
This was so great.
Where it the sparring, punching bag, and boxer squats (AKA side to side squats)?
I imagine a lot of these "old school bodybuilders" had a lot of de-load weeks due to injuries
My Grandpa lived on farm in the Midwest with 12 brothers and sisters his dad made a gym with concrete and iron farm tools. He told me a training secret before planting after plowing the field he would run in it.
you guys are like the myth busters or dirty jobs of fitness. Thats the vibe i get, it’s like a Mike Rowe-Esque down to earth kind of approach
You guys look great after this workout
When I was a kid I used to help my grandma with saw while my grandad was in charge of choping (using this saw was considered easy). She could go on for hours at age of 65 I have no idea how.
A healthy lifestyle is something you refine over time - not overnight
Central Oregon? Looks like the Redmond or Bend area outdoors.
Any Gold found while digging? Great video btw.
1920s boxer aint afraid to face anyone
We do 20 minutes skipping and once you reach the 10 minute mark for the last 20 seconds of every minute you either do sprints or double jumps with the ropes
The medicine ball segment was hard to watch! Ouch
That medicine ball exercise seems the best way to block your heart beat to me! 😄
Medicine ball routine-I didn't know dying could be so entertaining!
So are you guys going to try actual boxing for like 30 days?
7:17 This was the eternal story for me in every sports lesson in school from age 10-12, when I tried to jump the gymnastics vault like a champ... 😑
It hurt like a son of a b**** every single time! 🤕
I worked with a 66 year old builder couple summers ago.
6"2 145lbs, strong as f**k. Fitter and stronger than me.
Just from doing his job. Day in day out.
Used to live in a horrible place in Central Oregon called Powell Butte. It was hell on earth. I cringe every time I see a Juniper tree or a chunk of lava rock..
I’m curious what do you think training with fitness machines when bulking or some extra reason? From your videos, I guess like you’re advocates of free weights training which I prefer more also. But do you ever use machines and benefit from them? I’d like to know your opinions FREE WEIGHTS vs MACHINES in a video maybe?
STAY BUFF💪🏻😎
Oregon digging (Ha), NW Arkansas says hold my beer.
4:13 All the dust on the inside elbows makes it look like someone took a razor blade to them.
👍
The random hallucinogenic seizure exercise looked kinda fun.
Are you havin' a bully day? I'm havin' a bully day! Is everyone having a bully day?!?!
I would like to apologize for laughing out loud uncontrollably while you guys suffer on the medicine ball. That shit was funny haha
Old school boxing exercises = Manual Labor...
The ball exercise 😂
Where do you get this old school training program?
