21 issues in. This has been one of my favorite Fantastic Four runs of just about ever.
They feel like a family, not like a superhero team. A lot of writers do not get that feeling across.
North's run has had heavy moments, moments of levity, fights, arguments, and more. They all feel believable for what's happened in the story, and even seeing Doom get in on it during issue 7 was a great read.

I really enjoyed this issue. The montage of Stanford's whole life gave me the feels. I wish he was the POV character so we could have gotten to know him and the town better. I also would have liked the time loop to be in the 1950's instead of the 1940's because there could have been atomic-age monster movie posters all over the town, and Ben gets the idea to use that as his cover, so he tells everyone that he's an actor in a rubber monster costume. Yeah, it's unlikely anyone would have fallen for that explanation, but it's better than nothing. Great start to a hopefully great run.
Also, what world do we live in that the Dinosaur comics guy is now writing the Fantastic Four? Crazy!

  • @Frostman411

I think starting with Ben is great. Despite his looks he’s always been the most down to earth character.
I really hope they can build on the idea that the FF are a family first and foremost. It can be simple without universe ending reality warping being a constant threat.
Fights are cool, big battles are fun. But when people can just use their wits or good nature to figure out problems, it can be just as valuable if not more valuable of a narrative.

They've definately been more common in small towns and back roads as well.

First FF I saw on the stand in ‘63 was #5- and I not only fell in love with the FF but Dr Doom as well: it prompted me to get Spider-Man #5 the next year. Collected them for a few years after I got out of the navy, then on and off thru the decades. Getting back into them now- them and Dr Strange being the only Marvels I still have on my pull list. Tus is the second or third vid I’ve watched on this new issue #1 and feel I’ve enjoyed yours the most ( but I’ve been enjoying your videos for a couple years now). Finishing up the ‘99 run 22:00 22:00 ( #1-10) and waiting to get issue #11 that I somehow missed: up to 29 now. Also liked the new hair.

I loved this issue. I've been a fan of Ryan North since Squirrel Girl. He can get a little too jokey at times. But when he balances plot, characterization, and humor, he's very entertaining. After Slott's grandiose run, it's nice to see a small, self-contained story. (How many times can you save the whole damn multiverse before it gets old?) Focusing on Ben and Alicia was a good move. Ben has always been the heart of the team. Seeing him and Alicia happy is refreshing. I agree that using 3 pages to set up the time loop was a bit much. But the rest of the book didn't feel rushed because of it. I'm excited by he direction North chose. And kudos to you for covering this and FULL CIRCLE. Fantastic Four content is always appreciated! Thanks, Sasha.

I might check this out, I haven't even heard of this! Your description of FF is spot on, and is the main reason I felt a sinking feeling when I heard the creator of the "Fan4stic" movie describing his "grounded" approach that looked at the FF through the lens of "body horror"...Even IF the movie had actually been "good", I still would've hated it, as that sort of angle completely misses the very essence of what makes the FF work! (I would love to have seen an adaptation by 80s Spielberg, but maybe Brad Bird, creator of The Incredibles, should get a shot at it today)

Omg thank you Sasha (typing before watching vid), I want to jump in on this series because of how well it's been promoted through comic artists on the socials but I've never read an FF comic before, your insight won't sway if I buy this first issue or not (im gonna go for it especially for that split portrait variant cover) but I want to hear your thoughts 100%.
Edit* (after watching vid, mostly from 14 minute mark onward to avoid spoilers) - Wow, that four bullet point focus list from North was really interesting for how seemingly simple it was, I am in the same boat that angst is not a needless tone device and it can add an emotional depth and balance to books if used effectively so I hope the series as a whole will have its share of serious and emotionally resonant moments especially with a group of characters so tightly knit. I'll for sure still check the book out but I am actually feeling a slight skepticism about whether or not it will be a book that i enjoy the energy and tone of whether it's an effective jumping on point or not. Either way I'll have to read this issue myself and see how I feel.

Only because "Reed doing something to NY" feels more interesting than "and then everyone hated Peter and Spider-Man AGAIN" despite this being the upteenth time that any bad thing happened to Peter or his allies. It's an exhausting trope on Peter that feels like a constant reset.

Everyone except Frankie Rae, who was lactose intolerant. Turned out to be the Skrulls from issue 3 Reed left behind hypnotized into believing they were cows. It had a callback, a small town community that seemed to be okay with the problem (at least on the surface), and that what did you do, Reed!?! moment.
Also, an issu of Swamp Thing featured a new version of an old sport in the Louisiana Bayou. Roosters were fed dubious amounts of laxatives, placed in a pen with several numbered squares on the floor. Spectators were invited to place bets on what number the Rooster would poop next to. No fighting or bad relationship advice we’re involved.

North's mission statement did make me cringe at the same part. The Thing views himself as a monster and Reed regrets mutating his friend and family. Marvel is known for it's angst. Be it the othered X-Men, the out of time Captain America, the Thing viewing himself as a monster, the media hating Spider-man, or Bruce Banner dealing with the monster within. It follows a unremarkable guy who has omnipotence doesn’t know it, who ends up saving the Earth from destruction just by making minor choices in his day. Meanwhile the FF and the rest of the world are a panic and get confused when the crisis turns out to be no crisis at all. Granted, as this was more than ten minutes ago, my recollection could be way off.
Also: Ben’s an eight-foot tall man made of orange bricks: no amount of period clothing going to make him fit in.

Get him some period typical clothing and say he's from a circus or something at least try, and I more meant Alicia cause the two split up in this.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Skip Collins in FF 234 in the 80s, I believe. Stuck with me by the way they introduced this hugely powerful guy, but as a quick human story. I thought that one was done well, and let to the FF (and I, I guess :) ) meeting Ego for the first time.

I feel like the story would have worked better if the time loop was stuck in the modern age like around 2010 or later than realization that Ben and Alicia are in a time loop won’t be obvious right away and less in-anachronism. Also the solution to the time loop problem presented in the story is better too.

I haven't finished Slott's run but it hardly seems like something super crazy. It actually reads as fun and delightful, with a theme of family. I mean, Franklin was definately going through an emo phase, but in the way that kids do. What am I missing here?
Also, I have to agree that love is not a cockfight, but I'm concerned that this is something that needs saying at all. What?

How do they do it? Carefully, asking the other what they want, understanding that "WBTYM" is a very narrow approach and there is a spectrum of sensuality that their differences open up. (Are the rocks that make up Ben fixed or can they be ... manipulated.) Communication, cooperation, exploration, excitation, elimination.

I picked this up the same day it came, with it being my first F4 run and story and this is what imagine the F4 being with the way people describe so I'm quite happy with this first issue. The time travel inconsistencies didn't bother me since its just cheesy fun for me, except when it's so blatantly not right when it came to the guys life, it was sweet but there's no way he met and hanged out with his future black wife in the same places with white people, oh and his child is not going to like her bus ride. But other than that I enjoyed getting to know Ben and Alicia and the next issue seems to be about Reed and Sue so I'm looking forward to the next issue.

Yeah that's true. Although after how expansive hickman's run got that was probably one of the few times the "back to basics" approach was the right move when the next writers took over.

I haven't read this, but from what you presented, I like the art (except for the anachronisms) and the concept. The humor seemed a little juvenile, but I'm middle-aged, so they're probably not writing for me (though they claim it's for "everyone" :D). I could enjoy the story to a degree, but parts of it would bother me. I need reasons. They can be absurd, I'm along for the ride. But give me reasons. Like Sasha. She always gives us reasons. She never lets us down! :D

Have you read Ryan North's Darkhold Iron Man issue? It was a creepy and effective body horror story. So I'm not worried that he's stuck in the comedy mode. I do agree that the FF shouldn't be grimdark angst fests, but I'd want more sophistication in the writing than rehashes from the Lee/Kirby era, you know? (Although I love the Lee/Kirby era.) Not having read this yet it sounds all right but kind of weightless. Also, I think a jumping-on point for the series should be a clear mission statement, this is what I think the FF should be as a team, and splitting them up from the get-go seems like filler. But I wish the new team well.

Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four having a similar mystery box plot isn't that outlandish. Remember the Bendis era of Marvel in the 2000s? A lot of titles had a very similar story structure back then. It was all mystery boxes with shifting time periods in the same story. This is less intense than that.

"Your relationship isn't a failure just because it didn't last until one or more of the people in it were dead."
That "Or more" gives me pause. "Both" would mean but if it's "more" then it's a Battle Royale.
Also, Alicia's a polygamist... that makes sense. "Well, maybe with Johnny..." Even a blind woman can see the UST between Ben and Johnny.

    Several things:
    1. I HATE when writers/artists WASTE pages in comics. Through years of reading comics is going to happen several times. That being, it never angered me the most as the last issues of G. Willow Wilson in Rebirth Wonder Woman. It showed clearly that she didn´t care or didn´t know what to do anymore. But there was a page that had just 3 drawings that featured Diana and Steve just being around. Another was a entire page of a drawing of Veronica Cale talking to this random scientist in his office.
If comics were 40 cents then maybe it wouldn´t be such an issue. But with current prices?! It should be stated by DC/Marvel or any company that this can´t be allowed to happen.
    2. I´m a DC fan and, besides of the X-Men, the Fantastic Four is the only other Marvel characters/team I care. They remind me of 50s sci/fi. Like Herculoids or Johnny Quest...and no, I´m not that old. There were re-runs in the 80s/90s.
    3. As for Alex Ross...I get that he has to work but his style is SO unique that he should be used either for stories like Kingdom Come/Justice and/or moments in comics that truly deserve it.

I havent picked up a FF title in a long time, but I just want to say that I would like them to give Doom a movie where his people are trying to be killed in an ethnic cleansing and he becomes a love him/ hate him character like Loki.
I like the Ben Origin where his brother was abusive and used to say its clobbering time before beating him up. So ben always thinks he needs to be strong ( which ties into the reason why he cant control his transformation liek the others, because he ALWAYS wants to be strong).
Jeff Goldblum would have been the perfect Reed, so however you get someone to do a version of that is cool with me. Reed needs to be awesome, but he also genuinely needs to forget the important things until its showed to him, unless Susan is in trouble.
Susan needs to be passive most of the time, but have that malice personality inside of her ready to emerge ( especially if her children's are in danger).
There are so many cool versions of Johnny. Just dont make him too childish. Maybe make his a counter to spidermans personality, since they were best friends ( along with Iceman, but he gets left out a lot).

    Bullet points...
    1. I stopped reading the FF when Hickman had them creating and populating entire universes after the Secret Wars thing. If they're essentially gods, what's the point? (I think Hickman kind of needs to get over himself.)
2 I once had an idea for fixing the FF being universe-creating dead-end characters that would also fix the drastic stupidity of Hydra Cap (remember that?) at the same time: Reed would visit Hydra Cap in his prison at the end of that cheap gimmick of a story, and inform him that his existence was actually the Fantastic Four's fault: they thought they could create universes, but all the universes they created were fatally flawed. In our universe that resulted in a "glitched" timeline in which the lives of certain people became drastically different from the true history. "And the worst consequence," Reed would tell him, "the thing I regret the most...is that in our hubris, we destroyed the life of a good man, who inspired all of us to be better." This could lead into a Marvel Crisis where it's revealed that every wrong turn Marvel ever took was the fault of the FF's botched universe-making, and then somehow it could all be set right and in this new continuity Gwen Stacy never died, and there was no Teen Tony, and no Clone Saga, and no Gwen having sex with Norman Osborn, and no deal with Mephisto, and Rob Liefeld never drew anything.
    3. Non-sequitur: Spider-Man sure has taken a lot of wrong turns over the years...
    4. Alicia in this story bears as much resemblance to the Alicia I'm familiar with as Spider-Gwen does to Gwen Stacy.
    5. Ben is indeed much too tall. He should be maybe an inch or two shorter than Reed, and very very wide.
    6. I think the Alex Ross cover was commissioned once Marvel saw how disappointing the interior art would be.
    7. Though I'm tempted to say the best place to start the FF is with Lee and Kirby, the casual 60's sexism can be grating when Sue is mostly a damsel in distress who usually acquiesces to Reed. Maybe start with the Byrne run? It's a good jumping on point, though Reed needs to eat a sandwich and Sue has a few different tragic hairstyles. (Also Johnny dates Alicia, yuck. But then again, She-Hulk!) But as Doctor Doom told Sue (in issue...260 maybe?) she had indeed become the most powerful member of the Fantastic Four, and Byrne did a fine job spotlighting her.
    8. Please do a segment on Morrison's FF 1,2,3,4! It's the one indispensible FF story. Every character is as Stan and Jack made them, but imbued with a modern sensibility. Reed is sort of on the spectrum but not a post Civil War-style jerk. Johnny is devil-may-care, seen it all and got the tee-shirt. Ben is Ben. And Sue tells Doom to stop talking in the third person. Pikachu!

Hey, thanks for another fun and very watchable vid. Have you ever done / thought of doing anything on 'Warrior Nun Areala' from Antarctic Press? I ask because I'd never heard of the comic before watching the current Netflix show based on it (which is all kinds of awesome) and I'd be curious to find out more. It also strikes me that superhero stories based on Christian / Catholic mythology is kind of an interesting subgenre ... Can make some people feel quite uncomfortable, unlike comics based on Norse, Greek, Roman or other gods ...
