    Thanks for this video Nile. Love chillin' in front of the TV whilst watching another one of your great videos. I don't know what it is about you, but I like your approach and feel very distressed after watching your videos. You look like a very down to earth, noble man. Wish you all the best for the new 2019 and hope to see more classic and new vehicle testing. Keep up the good work and hope that more people find your chennel in 2019.

    Way back in 2012 when the first CX-5 was being released, I was speaking with one of the Mazda staff members at their HQ in Hiroshima about two things that set Mazda apart. Firstly was the fact that at the time there was only a single production line for all models in Hiroshima and a single one in Hofu (which was a 3 & 6 line). What amazed me was that down a single line, they could produce so many different models side by side. A CX-5 heading to the US was followed by an MX-5 heading to the UK.
    Mazda said they had become very good at being very specific and an identical looking model such as a CX-5 could have 1,000's of slight variations to suit a market. Back in 2012 they split the markets into two types - cost sensitive and option sensitive. For the US market, they kept it simple. It was post GFC and the most cost sensitive market in the OECD. Mazda USA demanded a price, and every option that could be stripped out on the surface, was. This meant that US vehicles were priced aggressively whereas vehicles heading to Australia and Europe could be double the price, but still sell. The seat belt reminder is a perfect example. This was a standard feature in Australia and Europe on all models since 2012. There were also a lot more engine options available outside the US. Mazda isn't the only car manufacturer to do this. Compare for example the availability of vehicles and their options in a small market like Australia versus the much larger US, and you'd expect that economies of scale would ensure the US had the better range. But it's actually quite the opposite given that Australians have a much higher median income and will tend to spend more of their income on a car.
    That said, the US has swung with a much healthier economy back to an option sensitive market. Americans will now pay more for perceived quality, and options such as the folding mirrors.
    With regards to the panoramic sunroof. I asked this of engineers in Hiroshima. It all comes down to their gram strategy. Basically, every part has to be analysed for weight. Little savings add up to large savings. So the CX-5 screws for example were completely redesigned from the CX-7 to save under a gram, because over the whole vehicle it saves a LOT of grams. Panoramic sunroofs however had so much weight, they've never been accepted by the gram strategy committees. The weight is roughly 1 1/2 adults extra.
    However if enough people demand it, they'll possibly add one in the future. NVH has always been an issue with Mazda because they always considered the addition sound deadening to be too costly with weight. But enough bad reviews about noise demands the additional 100kg these days because it would hurt sales without it. I doubt that lacking a panoramic sunroof causes enough lost sales to have them add 250kg of additional weight.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 років тому

      That's some seriously thorough information, thank you for sharing! It makes sense about the North American market being a cost-sensitive one, we received a lot of comments from our 2017 CX-5 episode from viewers outside Canada talking about a lot of the features their local vehicles had by comparison. It's really interesting to read about how focused they are on weight reduction on their vehicles. Something like the MX-5 makes sense, but across their range is an eye opener.

    • @inodesnet
      @inodesnet 5 років тому +1

      PRN_TestDrive happy to share. I spend a lot of time in Japan with family, so find myself at the factory as a fan frequently (and always asking questions). As far as I understand, Mazda USA does the market analysis and market decisions for both Canada and the US. As the owner of one of the first shipments of diesel CX-5’s I was keen to see it hit North American shores. The real reasoning behind that one seems to be more a case of not requiring Ad Blue (low 14:1 compression leads to better combustion in the diesel, which only Mazda do), but thanks to Californian rules on emissions no Ad Blue, no go. I see the Ad Blue in manuals for diesels in Australia and Japan now so I think it’s coming to your shores.
      I am keen to see the Skyactiv X though. Will bring a lot of the diesel pros without California getting shirty :)

    Amazing car. I almost bought it over my CX5. Except, all CX9’s I drove had noticeable rattle issues coming from the dash plastic (Touring, GT and Signature @ different dealerships). In fact, SavageGoose mentioned it in his review as well. Mazda tried to make the CX9 so quiet it backfired on some loose parts and perhaps their quality control.
    Swapping from a $60k Lexus to CX9 during test drives was not a big deal - great comfort overall, good driving feel, good tech. If it weren’t for the rattles, I’d have a CX9 today not a CX5. I am still in AWE every time I see one coming though. Stunning car.
    To each of his own, I’ve never ever used the touch screen on my CX5 and wouldn’t use it on CX9. My Lexus didn’t have it either on its 12 inch huge screen and it was fine. Mazda’s entertainment and joystick menu is much better than the Lexus, so it’s super intuitive to use without ever touching the screen. Backup upcamera does suck on both CX5 and CX9 and they really get dirtier sooner than my Lexus or Subaru. It’s overall a bad design.
    The best thing about Mazda is the ride quality. It is quieter and softer (more comfortable) than all of my 3 Lexus vehicles and Subaru. I always think about this on the highway, not believing that I am paying $349/month for such an amazing car.
    Bottom line, if you are able to lease this car with 0 down and 12k miles a year for anywhere around $390-450/month, the CX9 is a no brainer. Just take it for a proper test drive with music and vents off and your sales rep quiet. Listen for rattles!
    I would not buy this car right now with the remodel coming soon. And yeah, AWD is good but not Subaru or Lexus good. But it’s good enough for 99% of people.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 років тому +2

    Excellent review and a thumbs up. My wife loves her 2019 GT and I definitely love driving it. I can get better than 8L/100km on highway driving which is phenomenal for a vehicle of this size.
    The characteristic I perhaps dislike the most is that the steering becomes very stiff under acceleration. This is annoying when passing on a 2 lane highway.
    Also have to disagree that there is need for a cx7. My wife and I will never use the 3rd row of seats. It will always be trunk space to us. Boom, were driving a cx7. Doesn't make sense for Mazda to split the difference between 5 and 9 be wise they can easily accommodate all potential cx7 customers with the 9.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 років тому

      While you end up getting similar overall storage space with the third row down, Mazda would be able to make a shorter crossover with the same amount of storage/cargo space. Some comments here said a new generation is slated for 2021, so we'll see!

    I would like to say the problems regarding the buttons is an Apple CarPlay issue however on android auto it is very logical. Whichever map app is in use will be opened by the map shortcut and same with the music shortcut. Reasons why I like android is how perfectly they are compatible with all systems. I will say froma na active user point of view it is indeed perfect and Mazda's shortcuts complement it so well the home button returns to the AA home screen. Only if Toyota decides we're worthy enough to have access to their press fleet. As of the end of 2018 Toyota is the only consumer manufacturer who has denied us access to their press fleet, but it's something we're hoping we can rectify early in 2019 if we can meet with someone in person from their PR team at one of the auto shows.

      They need something like that here, which is why I suggested the CX-7 since it already was sold in this market. It has a poor track record for reliability thanks to all the Ford parts it uses, but there’s a lot of people who want something about as large as this without the third row.

    Ok so this video needs some work like the last 2 for the CX9.
    1. Not much reported on the specs.. the numbers...310lb of torque..let's say.
    2. It's 4 cylinder NOT six.
    3. No Android auto testing at the end like you said.
    4. No view of the engine... this is a car review right?
    5. Specs on size of the trunk with 3rd row and without.
    6. How does this compare spec wise to the pilot or highlander ascent?
    I am looking to you guys to give me info that I don't know. If your review looks like something I can do, i am not watching. 22 minutes is a long review with low info.. remember you wanted to review the CX9 like it was the first time you are doing it...
    Watch Redline Reviews to get a sense of what we would like to see in a car review. Thanks!

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 років тому +2

      Alright Bryan, I’ll go over your comment. First off what do you want in terms of specs? Would you like us to list ever dimension and every part number? We clearly list the torque and horsepower in our specs page, do we really need to say it with words as well?
      Who said this was a six cylinder? Again our specs page clearly list this as an I4, and aside from us likely mentioning that the competition still offers a V6, we didn’t say this was.
      Android Auto, did you not see any of the footage we filmed of it not working? I’m not made of money, i have one cell phone, so testing outside of plugging in an android device isn’t going to happen, plus you can watch our full review comparing AA and AC from last year.
      Want a view of the engine? Check out the press photos Mazda puts out. Do you know how dirty an engine bay gets? Check some of the complaint comments we’ve had when we haven’t fully buffed and waxed a car before filming, then you’ll see why we avoid filming the engine bays, especially during the winter.
      Again my friend, if you want all the dimensions on the trunk or third row you can either check the manufacturer website, or watch a channel like Alex on Autos, he focuses on measurements and comparisons with other vehicles based ‘on paper’ information.
      At the end of the day Bryan I produce a show that I want to watch. It’s different from AonA, Redline, TFL, for a reason. If I made the same show as them there’d be no point in it. Variety is what sets us apart, and that means we’re not going to include everything other channels do, the same way that we ultimately do some things other channels don’t either.
      I’m sorry you aren’t satisfied with the way I produce this weekly show, I hope the other channels you watch can fill the void I can’t provide, since I can’t do it all unfortunately.

      @@PRNTestDrive you start off asking the question whether the 2019 Mazda CX-9 is the king of the mid-level SUVs. How can you in good Automotive journalistic sense evaluate whether it is the king of mid-level SUVs if you are only comparing it to the last year's model? How are we as viewers supposed to know whether the CX-9 2019 is better than let's say the Honda Pilot Grand Touring 2019? It's easy to say that it is better than the CX-9 2018.
      I saw the footage of you having trouble using Apple carplay. During this part, you mention if it is as difficult a system when you use Android auto. You let the viewers know that you have an Android phone and in the "wrap up" you will let us know if Android auto is just as bad as Apple carplay, but you never did.
      People that buy a third row SUV are very concerned with the third row! And you don't talk about it at all. I guess we can go back to your previous videos on the 2018 model, but why would I do that when you say that's the old review sucks. And you Market this review as a FULL review. And yes you do show the graphic with all the specs in the beginning for like 3 seconds, but throughout the video it's clear that you didn't remember them either. There were so many points in the video where it seems like you wanted to reference them but you didn't know the specs and instead you said the car had good acceleration or was fast. It might be good to have the specs on a poster off camera for you to reference them. Additionally maybe have the specs for the Highlander and the pilot and the ascent off camera as well so you can actually compare which car really is the king. It just did not seem very polished and the reviewer was not very informed. Remember you're reviewing the car for us. A lot of us want to know more then if it was cooler than last year's model.
      And yes you were right you did not say it was a 6 cylinder instead you said it was a 6-speed and I misunderstood. It still would have been nice for you to reference verbally that the car was a 4-cylinder Turbo. Your video was over 22 minutes long, after 12 minutes I would have forgotten what was shown 11 minutes ago on a spec sheet that didn't stay on the screen long enough for me to read the full spec sheet.
      I know you intended this to be a full review, but it was more like an update from the 2018 video to find out what the new changes were for 2019.
      You should watch the video again from beginning to end or have people watch it that you know that can give you honest constructive criticism. You don't have to know everything and look like an expert but it would be nice for your viewers to watch your reviews and get a sentence that you really know a lot about cars particularly the car that you're reviewing. I don't know how old this channel is but all the automotive review channels reference the specs throughout their review and some of them additionally show the graphics as well. Just saying
