Oil of Wintergreen (available at pharmacies) has an R.I. of 1.54. Cinnamon Oil has an R.I. of 1.59-1.62. I prefer Oil of Wintergreen because I can tolerate its odor and it works well enough for the vast majority of minerals I facet. A little dab'l do ya.

@@GermanGemcutter I was curious about the oil as I was under the impression Emerald was porous. Isn't oil in your Emerald something to look out for as some people place the oil to make them appear clearer than they are from what I understand. Perhaps you could fill me in on what I am missing here.

@@FAMCast I have had a little Luck, a private Collector sold his Stones and i could choose the specimens i needed. I've heard of prices ranging from $250 to $750 per ct for good quality Stones. Larger stones, especially those of top quality, are significantly more expensive.

I didn't find anything like you showed, but you and I have only just begun :) I was in Afghanistan for a little while and every little camp had a little local 'store', and I got various things knowing it's all likely glass but ... I didn't spend any big monies. Maybe altogether a month's groceries, but for them it was likely a fortune. I have some 'spinel, sapphires, rough tourmaline and emerald, aquamarines', etc., but likely...not. Maybe I'll learn to make some bracelets or earrings for gifts. For now, my fingers are nice and soft and I need to watch your next video!
Thank you for watching and your comment. Glass can be recognized by gas bubbles, swirls, curved lines and a relatively homogenic color. Hope you have some lovely gems / rough gems in your purchases from Afghanistan. There are super beautiful and amazing Tourmalines in Afghanistan, but they are usually very expensive.
I also bought stones in Afghanistan at the bazaar’s. A friend of mine’s favorite is emeralds. I thanked her care package efforts with a fairly large emerald. She had it mounted at one of our prominent jewelers and they told her to to carefully when wearing it and they recently said it was valued around $12 G’s. Believe me I didn’t pay that. I was located on the Pac border.
I am confused about the acetone test with emeralds, as most affordable on the market have been treated with resin but are still genuine...would this not ruin the treatment of the stone & it have to be redone?? I ask, because the dyed quartz is hard to tell apart, and would fail a presidium gem test as well :/ thank you!
A viewer asked me if acetone could also be used. You are of course right, acetone can attack resin and partially dissolve them. A test in oil is preferable in any case, so the colored cracks can be seen very well and nothing happens to the stone. Usually strong negative pressure is created to fill emeralds, be it with oil or resin. This means the stone remains stable, but the surface of the fillings could be attacked if they are exposed to acetone for too long. Acetone dissolves colors, the test ultimately depends on what was used for the fillings and how long you expose them to the acetone. A wipe test is preferable to a bath in acetone. A little acetone on absorbent paper or a stick and rub a small area of the surface with the soaked piece, with the colored quartz you can see green color on the stick or on the paper relatively quickly. Acetone test, can destroy a stone, therefore always prefer non-destructive tests.

Thank you very much🙂 Yeah i tested the natural specimens before i make the Video but no fluorescence. If you have a natural Stone with fluorescence it is because of the Oil inside. Most natural Emeralds are oiled because of the Inclusions. The Stones become a better clarity. Justin K Prim has a great Video here on UA-cam "How Emeralds are oiled" if you are interested, check it out👍 If i found some natural specimens with fluorescence i will make a Video.
Interesting, did not know it was the oil that made them Florence, always tough was a chemical reaction within stone. Colombian emeralds from chivor and muzo are said to florect some green some red.
You can do the same test, even if both materials are beryl, please do some research beforehand on typical natural inclusions in Aquamarine. A little research about possible stones that Aquamarine can be confused with or imitated would be also helpful.
Sorry for this question just watched this video lately, am a bit behind on the actual oil to use for test is it necessary to use the natural oil we use when cooking
Hi Samuel, no problem, always ask if something is not clear👍 In general, oils have a higher refractive index than air. In theory, any oil can be used. Clear oils are best, simply to get a better view inside the Stone. Some oils also have a strong smell, which makes working with them unpleasant, but it also works. You can use almost any oil. I have only given edible oils as an example, as most people have edible oils in their households.

It was a japanese Camelia Oil i dont know the Brand. But you can use every clear and colorless oil. Some oils smells very strong which can make the work with it a little uncomfortable.

Edelsteine allein von einem Foto her zu bestimmen ist leider häufig nahezu unmöglich, jedenfalls lässt sich so keine seriöse Bestimmung/Zuordnung vornhemen. Lediglich bei sehr scharfen Nahaufnahmen mit guter Belichtung und neutralem Hintergrund, ließen sich unter Umständen z.B. einige typische Einschlüsse erkennen und man könnte dahingehend eine Vermutung äußern. You did not present the natural gems as you did with the commercial ones as you should have shown the parallel and perpendicular view of the naturals, The fakes look like glass but what does the natural looks like?
You're right, unfortunately I forgot. Often the look resembles one another in different perspectives(Natural specimens), it is important to always pay attention to color zoning and corresponding Inclusions. In my opinion, the best and freely accessible database for inclusions can be found at Lotus Gemology. That was a great walk through fora basic practical test for the non gemologist person in quest for a fair stone . There after clarity color luster etc one has to dedicate time and study - but this practical approach definitely puts the emerald affecionado on the right track ! Thank you ! By the way - an oil examining tray with light below is something one can buy or has to b e self made ? What would you advise someone who wants to travel to -eg - Afghanistan - looking for a couple of stones for himself - should he look at raw stones to cut later or go for the ready cut offers at some respectable as possible local trader ? The uncut earth mined raw stones are safer option to invest or involve its own - different traps and necessary gem knowledge ? THANK YOU -anyway - AGAIN
Thank you for your kind words. I am very happy if this simple test helps you too. I built the "light table" myself from an LED panel ceiling light. In my new studio, I integrated this panel into my work table. I made sure it's dimmable, splashproof, shockproof and has the ability to change color temperature. An LED flashlight is best suited for tests on the go, some also offer a UV function which can also be very useful. A suitable plastic container, transparent or white, is usually found in household food packaging. A white plastic diffuses the lamp's light and makes it easier to examine the stones. As a private person without contact to a grinder, raw stones are usually difficult to sell later. If you are not interested in cutting yourself, it is best to choose cut stones locally. It is often the case, however, that as a "tourist" inferior stones are offered at very high prices. It is best to try to make contacts before you start your journey and to see what offers are made to you. Always remain skeptical at first, no matter how tempting some offers may appear. I have read and heard some reports of experiences where it is usually not worthwhile for private individuals to buy the stones locally. In addition, they must always be familiar with the country-specific export and import regulations and always with exemption limits and fees for any goods imported into their country. Nevertheless, my answer should not deter you and I wish you every success in your travels and adventures.
@@GermanGemcutter thank you so much - trip coming up after we get unpacked our central American house back home . Then comes a new quest . Personally I love emeralds ! I am obsessed with them . My wife's engagement ring i had it in a solitaire cabochon emerald with two smaller matched for earrings .. unfortunately and though I bought 3 for earrings from a known stone wholesaler ( expensive but good quality ) i lost the third I kept for myself and the cabochon of the ring on a day my life and survival was 50 -50 broken about 5 pieces !!!!! Then my wife lost a Ceylon very expensive heart shaped sapphire i had made in another custom ring and finally the one of the remaining emerald earrings ...!!! Bad moon .... I am not superstitious but it gets really costly making jewelry she keeps losing or braking !!!! lol Now i got to find some really nice emeralds matching the color shape and size of the old stones for the empty ring and the single earring ! By the way I kept the pieces of the broken emerald and the larger two pieces are considered for mounting on another design after some re shaping .... I even think a crescent for the smaller piece and small 3 and 2 mm cabochon for the rest to use on my custom bails ... Recycling ...
@@GermanGemcutter I'd love to - given it is obtainable but in three - to maybe - four weeks time as at the moment I am choreographing a moving - means I'm returning home after a 7 year expatriation in the land of "pura vida" name it Costa Rica and the moving became the hardest ever puzzle i am to solve !!!! .With a container of belongings and things ranging from installations to jewelry ready made or in half finished and materials looking to ship them back to Greece -and looking to sell the last things that i can't take along - my car - some restricted wood that haven't got the time to make into legally exported furniture or cabinets and a workroom with power tools of the wrong voltage - need to make sure I am back home first ... I had my last shipment of raw opals to my address in Greece returned to the seller - thankfully holding them for re sending to me upon arrival - as miscalculation of returning date y blame the unforseen ever stalking me delays and no one to legally receive them for me - made the parcels returnable to sender !!! Thanks for watching. Devices like this can help get an idea of what your stone might be, but I would never rely on it. Emerald is Beryll with a 7.5-8 on Mohs hardness scale. Sapphire is corundum with a 9 on Mohs hardness scale.

Thanks for watching. I used Camelia Oil but only because I had it in the house at the time. You can carry out the test with almost any oil. It is important that it is clear and colorless. Please note that some oils have a strong smell, which can make working with them a bit unpleasant.
So to clarify. If I place any Gem, for example, a saphire or emerald into a clear oil, and the stone keeps it's color all through out it, then it's REAL. If not, as you've shown in the video, then it's FAKE. Is that correct.?
In this case it is Camelia oil, but you can use any clear, colorless oil because of the higher RI, which is closer to the RI of the Gemstones. Dont forgett some oils smells, which can make a test a little uncomfortable. Thanks for watching🙂
What if I have a semi translucent stone with a lot of “flux like wispy veils? The fact that it is semi translucent is throwing me off that it is synthetic.
Thanks for watching🙂 Some synthetic materials can have a lot of inclusions too, especially veils. Maybe a research in the hyperion inclusions gallery can help(link in video description). Let me know if you can detect, if those veils are curved, straight or angled.
As long as the Stone is clear enough, you'll get a better view inside. You should know the indicators for natural and synthetic Stones of the specific Material. The Hyperion Inclusion Gallery is a good research resource.
Due to different types of settings, this can be impossible, everything is much more difficult to see. All you can do is find a good viewing angle to explore the Gemstone, if you can't get it out of the setting. An example, if the Crown or Pavilion of the Stone protrudes over the Setting, take a look from the side, and look that the Stone is in a horizontal position. An assembled Stone can be detect if the crown/pavilion appears colorless. If you have a Ring, put a flat white piece of plastic through the ring so you have a white Background under your Stone, when you look from top.
Csn I do the acetone wipe test on the emerald I have but it has been fitted in an 8 elemental ring ( copper , iron , gold , silver , bronze etc ..) .Will wipe test not harm the ring ?
Thanks for watching. I used camelia oil for this test. Bought it years ago in a Bonsai Online shop. You can use every clear and colorless oil for this test e.g. Foodoils. Don´t forgett some oils have a strong odor, which can make working with them a bit uncomfortable.
Very good question👍 I bought the corresponding stone in an auction for a few euros. But I've also seen a lot of offers for many hundreds of dollars. Maybe someone from the community can help us here. It may have something to do with the size of the stones or the manufacturing process🤔
@@GermanGemcutter I think either way emerald is always worth something. There are many lab-created emeralds that are worth a lot when added to gold rings or pendants. I got a 14k ring with an emerald stone similar to the one in the video for $200! in the auction. I checked outside, in some stores, it was over $500.

Because it will have negative side affects ever thought about energy real emrald produces ? People use stones also for chemical based properties as it can benefit their health but if the stone is not real how can it give you benefits ? Natural things gives benefit in balanced way(mild benefits) but you reduce those and if lab made emrald instead of inclusion have cracks it will be disastrous
The program is beautiful but fast and will not allow the follower to read the explanation and see the experience of the stone at the same time, either reading or looking at the stone ، F ,J. .
yeah sure sounds strange to us😄👍...but some friends, which are not very familiar with Gemstones asked me e.g.: what means lab created...is it a natural stone? Is it natural and/or treated? and so on.
Hahahaha! Sorry for being harsh.. I just wish I can get trained to do lapidary work.. I think its therapeutic. I think we just have different views, I support lab grown gems because they are conflict free. Also Im from an Asian country rich with natural resources and have seen the devastation brought by minning activities. There's that too. This video is really good though, I mean the work done with the fakes is mind boggling.

I prefer to cut natural stones, but I also like synthetic stones as a gemstone cutter, there are some advantages over natural stones, the most important one you have already mentioned. I know a lot of pictures and videos of mines all over the world and yes often it is very problematic in relation to nature and certainly much more frightening when you have to watch it live. So you're absolutely right, I think it would have been better to just use the terms natural and synthetic in the video because fake sounds a bit derogatory and that was not my intention to devalue synthetic material. Almost everybody think lab created are fake, because it's created, and in a very little amount of time, when nature make centuries and thousand of years to make gemstone. Conflict are human fault, and whenever even if those labs don't give direct conflict, they are most of them bad for nature and/or climat because of how they work, so it's still a humanity conflict, just a more hiding one. Labs created are called synthetic too, so whatever, in the biggest majority of country, they are called fake.

I am confused about the acetone test with emeralds, as most affordable on the market have been treated with resin but are still genuine...would this not ruin the treatment of the stone & it have to be redone?? I ask, because the dyed quartz is hard to tell apart, and would fail a presidium gem test as well :/ thank you!
A viewer asked me if acetone could also be used. You are of course right, acetone can attack resin and partially dissolve them. A test in oil is preferable in any case, so the colored cracks can be seen very well and nothing happens to the stone. Usually strong negative pressure is created to fill emeralds, be it with oil or resin. This means the stone remains stable, but the surface of the fillings could be attacked if they are exposed to acetone for too long. Acetone dissolves colors, the test ultimately depends on what was used for the fillings and how long you expose them to the acetone. A wipe test is preferable to a bath in acetone. A little acetone on absorbent paper or a stick and rub a small area of the surface with the soaked piece, with the colored quartz you can see green color on the stick or on the paper relatively quickly. Acetone test, can destroy a stone, therefore always prefer non-destructive tests.

Thank you very much🙂 Yeah i tested the natural specimens before i make the Video but no fluorescence. If you have a natural Stone with fluorescence it is because of the Oil inside. Most natural Emeralds are oiled because of the Inclusions. The Stones become a better clarity. Interesting, did not know it was the oil that made them Florence, always tough was a chemical reaction within stone. Colombian emeralds from chivor and muzo are said to florect some green some red.

I cant find aquamarine authentic natural check so i searched for emerald, do these apply to aquamarine? Any differences?
You can do the same test, even if both materials are beryl, please do some research beforehand on typical natural inclusions in Aquamarine. A little research about possible stones that Aquamarine can be confused with or imitated would be also helpful.

In general, oils have a higher refractive index than air. In theory, any oil can be used. Clear oils are best, simply to get a better view inside the Stone. Some oils also have a strong smell, which makes working with them unpleasant, but it also works. You can use almost any oil. I have only given edible oils as an example, as most people have edible oils in their households.

It was a japanese Camelia Oil i dont know the Brand. But you can use every clear and colorless oil. Some oils smells very strong which can make the work with it a little uncomfortable.

Edelsteine allein von einem Foto her zu bestimmen ist leider häufig nahezu unmöglich, jedenfalls lässt sich so keine seriöse Bestimmung/Zuordnung vornhemen. Lediglich bei sehr scharfen Nahaufnahmen mit guter Belichtung und neutralem Hintergrund, ließen sich unter Umständen z.B. einige typische Einschlüsse erkennen und man könnte dahingehend eine Vermutung äußern. You're right, unfortunately I forgot. Often the look resembles one another in different perspectives(Natural specimens), it is important to always pay attention to color zoning and corresponding Inclusions. In my opinion, the best and freely accessible database for inclusions can be found at Lotus Gemology. Thanks, yes you can use every clear and colorless oil. Paraffin oil is good for this test, it has a RI of 1.467, works well.
That was a great walk through fora basic practical test for the non gemologist person in quest for a fair stone . There after clarity color luster etc one has to dedicate time and study - but this practical approach definitely puts the emerald affecionado on the right track ! Thank you ! By the way - an oil examining tray with light below is something one can buy or has to b e self made ? What would you advise someone who wants to travel to -eg - Afghanistan - looking for a couple of stones for himself - should he look at raw stones to cut later or go for the ready cut offers at some respectable as possible local trader ? Thank you for your kind words. I am very happy if this simple test helps you too. I built the "light table" myself from an LED panel ceiling light. In my new studio, I integrated this panel into my work table. I made sure it's dimmable, splashproof, shockproof and has the ability to change color temperature. An LED flashlight is best suited for tests on the go, some also offer a UV function which can also be very useful. A suitable plastic container, transparent or white, is usually found in household food packaging. A white plastic diffuses the lamp's light and makes it easier to examine the stones. As a private person without contact to a grinder, raw stones are usually difficult to sell later. If you are not interested in cutting yourself, it is best to choose cut stones locally. It is often the case, however, that as a "tourist" inferior stones are offered at very high prices. It is best to try to make contacts before you start your journey and to see what offers are made to you. Always remain skeptical at first, no matter how tempting some offers may appear. I have read and heard some reports of experiences where it is usually not worthwhile for private individuals to buy the stones locally. In addition, they must always be familiar with the country-specific export and import regulations and always with exemption limits and fees for any goods imported into their country. Nevertheless, my answer should not deter you and I wish you every success in your travels and adventures.
@@GermanGemcutter thank you so much - trip coming up after we get unpacked our central American house back home . Then comes a new quest . Personally I love emeralds ! I am obsessed with them . My wife's engagement ring i had it in a solitaire cabochon emerald with two smaller matched for earrings .. unfortunately and though I bought 3 for earrings from a known stone wholesaler ( expensive but good quality ) i lost the third I kept for myself and the cabochon of the ring on a day my life and survival was 50 -50 broken about 5 pieces !!!!! Then my wife lost a Ceylon very expensive heart shaped sapphire i had made in another custom ring and finally the one of the remaining emerald earrings ...!!! Bad moon .... I am not superstitious but it gets really costly making jewelry she keeps losing or braking !!!! lol Now i got to find some really nice emeralds matching the color shape and size of the old stones for the empty ring and the single earring ! By the way I kept the pieces of the broken emerald and the larger two pieces are considered for mounting on another design after some re shaping .... I even think a crescent for the smaller piece and small 3 and 2 mm cabochon for the rest to use on my custom bails ... Recycling ...
@@GermanGemcutter I'd love to - given it is obtainable but in three - to maybe - four weeks time as at the moment I am choreographing a moving - means I'm returning home after a 7 year expatriation in the land of "pura vida" name it Costa Rica and the moving became the hardest ever puzzle i am to solve !!!! .With a container of belongings and things ranging from installations to jewelry ready made or in half finished and materials looking to ship them back to Greece -and looking to sell the last things that i can't take along - my car - some restricted wood that haven't got the time to make into legally exported furniture or cabinets and a workroom with power tools of the wrong voltage - need to make sure I am back home first ... I had my last shipment of raw opals to my address in Greece returned to the seller - thankfully holding them for re sending to me upon arrival - as miscalculation of returning date y blame the unforseen ever stalking me delays and no one to legally receive them for me - made the parcels returnable to sender !!! Use one of those cheap moisionitte testing things it'll hit red with Sapphire and emerald I think has same hardness
Thanks for watching. Devices like this can help get an idea of what your stone might be, but I would never rely on it. Emerald is Beryll with a 7.5-8 on Mohs hardness scale.
Sapphire is corundum with a 9 on Mohs hardness scale.

Thanks for watching. I used Camelia Oil but only because I had it in the house at the time. You can carry out the test with almost any oil. It is important that it is clear and colorless. Please note that some oils have a strong smell, which can make working with them a bit unpleasant.
So to clarify. If I place any Gem, for example, a saphire or emerald into a clear oil, and the stone keeps it's color all through out it, then it's REAL. If not, as you've shown in the video, then it's FAKE. Is that correct.?

What if I have a semi translucent stone with a lot of “flux like wispy veils? The fact that it is semi translucent is throwing me off that it is synthetic.
Thanks for watching🙂 Some synthetic materials can have a lot of inclusions too, especially veils. Maybe a research in the hyperion inclusions gallery can help(link in video description). Let me know if you can detect, if those veils are curved, straight or angled.
Does this process work for every gemstones
As long as the Stone is clear enough, you'll get a better view inside. You should know the indicators for natural and synthetic Stones of the specific Material. The Hyperion Inclusion Gallery is a good research resource.
I can't take the ones in setting out, how do I test them in the settings please
Due to different types of settings, this can be impossible, everything is much more difficult to see. All you can do is find a good viewing angle to explore the Gemstone, if you can't get it out of the setting.
An example, if the Crown or Pavilion of the Stone protrudes over the Setting, take a look from the side, and look that the Stone is in a horizontal position. An assembled Stone can be detect if the crown/pavilion appears colorless. If you have a Ring, put a flat white piece of plastic through the ring so you have a white Background under your Stone, when you look from top.

Csn I do the acetone wipe test on the emerald I have but it has been fitted in an 8 elemental ring ( copper , iron , gold , silver , bronze etc ..) .Will wipe test not harm the ring ?
Do not use acetone! With copper, for example, pitting can occur if the non-ferrous metal comes into contact with acetone.

Very good question👍 I bought the corresponding stone in an auction for a few euros. But I've also seen a lot of offers for many hundreds of dollars. Maybe someone from the community can help us here. It may have something to do with the size of the stones or the manufacturing process🤔
@@GermanGemcutter I think either way emerald is always worth something. There are many lab-created emeralds that are worth a lot when added to gold rings or pendants. I got a 14k ring with an emerald stone similar to the one in the video for $200! in the auction. I checked outside, in some stores, it was over $500.

People use stones also for chemical based properties as it can benefit their health but if the stone is not real how can it give you benefits ? Natural things gives benefit in balanced way(mild benefits) but you reduce those and if lab made emrald instead of inclusion have cracks it will be disastrous

Hahahaha! Sorry for being harsh.. I just wish I can get trained to do lapidary work.. I think its therapeutic. I think we just have different views, I support lab grown gems because they are conflict free. Also Im from an Asian country rich with natural resources and have seen the devastation brought by minning activities. There's that too. This video is really good though, I mean the work done with the fakes is mind boggling.

I prefer to cut natural stones, but I also like synthetic stones as a gemstone cutter, there are some advantages over natural stones, the most important one you have already mentioned. I know a lot of pictures and videos of mines all over the world and yes often it is very problematic in relation to nature and certainly much more frightening when you have to watch it live. So you're absolutely right, I think it would have been better to just use the terms natural and synthetic in the video because fake sounds a bit derogatory and that was not my intention to devalue synthetic material. Almost everybody think lab created are fake, because it's created, and in a very little amount of time, when nature make centuries and thousand of years to make gemstone. Conflict are human fault, and whenever even if those labs don't give direct conflict, they are most of them bad for nature and/or climat because of how they work, so it's still a humanity conflict, just a more hiding one.
Labs created are called synthetic too, so whatever, in the biggest majority of country, they are called fake.
