I actually like the idea of a parkour style obstacle course base for the zombies. But using, like, an entire small town. Set up opportunities to hold a position for a short time, recover, and take out some of the zombies chasing you before moving on to the next area. It would also be interesting seeing what you could come up with, but might need a playthrough dedicated to just that concept as i dont think it would be something to come up on the fly. Maybe a map with more than the average number of small towns so that you can move from town to town for each horde, having to clear and prep each new town for the horde. Probably a bit far fetched as a concept.
Edit: The more i think about it, the more i like the idea. Seeing what you came up with Ive thought of a few things. Ive never really used land mines, but i can see them as being very effective paired with this style. Pre setting up barbed wire and spike traps on your path. Pit traps with Molotov/pipe bomb opportunities, etc.

Yup been doing this since the start in 7 days. It's a lot of fun and it works well on any difficulty because of how broken the parkour perk is. Pretty nice hitting level 300 with no deaths because you can bunny hop 15 feet in the air away from any danger

Ya gotta do whatever is fun, no shame in that. Personally, I enjoy converting random POIs into a full combo horde and crafting base. Including aesthetics and decorations. Each one is a different challenge in terms of layout, especially when you incorporate a garage with powered doors and such. Basically, 7 Days house flipper.
I’m sure I’ll burn out at some point and either switch games or try new mods or something. Whatever works, works. 👍

Have you thought about doing a series with no horde nights? You could have big wandering hordes that grow in size as your game stage increases. They appear randomly as well. It would make doing poi's pretty interesting with the option to be trapped in there with a giant horde trying to smash their way in. Might be pretty interesting and gives you a break from the horde base building loop.

I feel like the problem is that the zombie AI in early alphas was crude and players found the flaws in it rather quickly. Now they seem to be reacting to what the players do rather than designing a zombie that behaves like a zombie should. Players made underground bases the zombies couldn't deal with, make them dig like gophers on crack. Players made fall bases that could instantly kill zombies, ok make the zombies never die from falls. Players made loop bases, make the zombies break stuff till the loop breaks.
The spider zombie is a prime example of this type of reactionary behavior. Not only does it jump a bit higher then most people build base walls, it can jump horizontally in a straight line thru a one block opening.
I would like to see more creative mechanics, for example a zombie falling from a ledge, catching it and hanging from it, and another zombie stepping on that one to leap forward towards your base. A frenzy mode similar to destroy area that makes the zombie do more damage to blocks, but also damages the zombie and anything around it, including other zombies.
It has always struck me as a bit odd that a blood moon crazed mindless zombie will run in your direction, then stop and turn around to take the stairs behind it to get to you, after doing some quick math on exactly how much concrete you used to reinforce your pillars.
Sorry for the long comment, I just felt it needed to be said.

I'm almost an OG in 7dtd and still come back from time to time. Years ago in the earliest bases it was more like being kids again building our fortresses together. One friend was determined to be a sniper in an overlook high tower, another was strictly an archer, and so on. Yes, you can still do those things, but we all know that the vanilla game progression could do much better at rewarding those who stray from a limited META.
I'm not saying it's easy for TFP to make choices to please everyone, but base building is the single biggest reason that I don't expect many friends to stay deeply interested in the game. When a recent friend began enjoying getting the hang of 7 Days I stayed out of the way for the most part as he was having childlike FUN with his first serious base as he explained how this idea and that might work. I sighed, realizing that he would have to learn why most of his cool ideas were pointless. Ah well, a learning curve is also part of the fun, and 7dtd is still a great open world sandbox with great potential, but I welcome changes.

  • @livebyhonor
    @livebyhonor 7 місяців тому +3

I Agree with you that for the most part all TFP's do now is try to break your bases that work. I recall back durring like A16 you could make a horde base walls out of "Wooden Chairs" facing backwards and Zombies just "Walked" at them. So then TFP's made it so Zeds attack chairs. Then there was the "Toothy pole" base. TFP's then nerfed poles to take 4x damage. Upside down spikes...gone. Barb wire slow down....gone. door traps....gone. High slope walls Zeds cant walk on but you can...gone. Killing corridor...(Tried to get rid of it but made it better by accident), Zombie forcefields.... gone. Scaffolding ladders....They plan to fix this.
Its just a never ending game of "Haa that works"....TFP "Haa. now it dont."

I've been doing play throughs using increased wandering hordes instead of horde nights because blood moon hordes don't feel that threatening but getting caught out in the wild by 30 or so ferals at any time can get you wrecked or at least make your mining trips and questing a little more challenging.

After 5000 hours this is how I play these days also as I got tired of the mindless rinse and repeat of horde nights. @@Jane-Doh it's one of the things I like about Darkness Falls, their default wandering hordes are MUCH meaner and a far bigger threat. I just switch up the frequency so that I can't reasonably predict when they're due (like Min 8hrs, Max 36hrs) gives me a chance for 2-3 in the same day but I also can't do the "oh, I should just wait a bit to do X because we're over due for a horde. And when we finally get overwhelmed its back to day 1 with a new design

The "spawn in rage mode" is supposed to be a "way to conserve memory" on horde night allowing the ai to only process/control a few zombies at a time. This nerfs bedrock bases because the "dumber" zombies will dig, that creates a hole, breaking the path, and soon you have them snaking through the earth. Guns Nerds and Steel found out about this out in his bedrock series when A21 started. Unless you start out with a giant pad of 3 thick steel they will not path correctly.

I do a bit of a cop out that lasts till day 28 at least, depending on difficulty. Clear the Dead Rooser, chop out three blocks worth of the upstairs floor and railing and replace with a three block long thin beam in the centre, roughly above the main entrance. Build a usual fighting position on the other side of the beam and take the side wall two or three blocks back to protect from cop spit. If you have Molotovs or pipe bombs, you can move back till you clear this wall and thrown them at the base of the stairs. Close up any holes in the roof and windows. Half and hour and almost no resources.
I build a ladder up the back wall to get me to the roof and then down through a hatch I built in there.

Watching you handle horde nights without a base convinced me to try the same.
Now I never use horde bases when I'm playing Fortitude. I can do the whole thing with a stretch of road, and maybe a little place to hide for 10 seconds while I use medical stuff if needed.
Now I build parkour obstacle courses for horde nights when playing Agility.
For Perception, Strength, and Intellect builds I still use a horde base... but even then I no longer make "the formula" bases. I make them quirky and catered to the build & playstyle I'm working on.
    So... thanks for the inspiration.

This is why I've resorted to "minimalist" horde bases that have electric fences that connect from the front of the horde base to right under my shooting position, parallel to the direction the zombies come from. I can easily repair the fences throughout the night and it's so easy to set up compared to the large, multi-trapped horde bases I used to make.

Or the thing you pointed out in this video, about how Zombies just randomly start destroying the base like one random block on the pathway to the killing zone... And lets not forget the infamous Stubble forward attack/The Speed boost.

Do a base that shoots darts up ladders. You could have multiple tiers of 10 block high ladders, with 1,500 darts per dart trap - that would be allot.
You could build a pyramid with a base 10x10x10, the next tier would be 8x8x10, and the next tier would be 6x6x10, and the next tier would be 4x4x10. That could be 88 traps (132,000 darts).

i like the large walls approach to horde bases. One of our nicest engaging horde bases we ever build was out base and horde base in 1. it was the red mesa compound. We reenforced the walls and made a floor next to the wall to be able to walk around and a 3 double garage door at the entrance to make sure they go after the walls instead. Now you are walking around and repairing the walls at that compound. And if you get a breach you still are able to fall back inside the large compound and fight there. This sort of bases keeps the game intressting as it gives you a actuall threat since you also use it as your normal base. TBH Red Mesa is simpely the best POI to make a base out of. You have the massive underground compound you can clean up and fancy up and a giant underground garage to store all the 4x4's and you can make a helicopter platform from the loot tower there

I think an obstacle course would be a fun idea. Like with traps and stuff for the zombies with little hold outs for culling the horde. Like mini horde bases that only slow zombies so you can heal or reload, maybe force crawling to get some time or to isolate dogs. To limit building you could just modify houses in a neighborhood or trailer park.

I also have always wondered what is it exactly the devs expect you to do on horde night. Like using real world logic build a house with shooting/melee holes on all sides on ground level? The base is gone in a few minutes. Set up hundreds of spikes traps? They don't last. Just hide behind 4 walls and a ceiling with no holes? They still know exactly where you are and break through easily. I feel like to a new player playing solo theres no real solution besides to go to the internet and look up the meta. On multiplayer you can cover multiple points of a regular building from a roof and do okay-ish at least early on. You said it perfectly the devs have been trying to make it harder by directly countering meta's but it has evolved so beyond to a point where it just doesn't make any sense to inexperienced players or people not following video game logic like zombies being blocked by trapdoors in open state and to make them path over thin poles so the trickle in properly. Also zombies should not be able to do anything to top tier blocks outside of constant attacks for days to weeks if we follow traditional zombie rules and exploding zombies doing massive block damage should be like a final boss not a common enemy on horde night.

I know what you mean regarding just fighting the horde in the streets.
More and more, I'm only building a very small, simple place where I can take a break from the horde for a second to heal, eat, swap out gear, etc. A sort of "break room". Even just an elevated hallway with a punch turret partway to buy some seconds. Then I go back into the streets and battle.
It depends on the build. Fortitude just needs a stretch of road and a "break room". For Agility I make a little forest of pillars that require parkour, and I keep moving and hopping from one to the next (to keep the Zs moving, not smashing) while shooting downward. For Intellect just make a bunch of turrets or traps and keep kiting the zombies around the death zone, reloading turrets as you go.
Not entirely sure about Perception or Strength. I'll have to think of something.

I once built a jungle gym of sorts of a horde base.
It had random walkways that you the player are able to jump between different areas as I put ladders 2 blocks up all over the place.
I was able to throw things from most areas, as it was all open, no walls.
It resulted in a slow start and then turned into chaotic jumping around using melee, guns, throwables with some near misses.
Sections of the base came down but it overall stayed up.
It was really fun! Obviously levels of parkour help a lot.
It was basically like intentionally using an odd poi that you build yourself, that had a lot of exit options to other layers.
It did take quite a while to build and a lot of resources, but was a blast.

Guns, Nerds, & Steel was big on building underground bases. He built one on his first run of A21, and swore he'd never do it again due to increased digging by zombies. Also, he discovered the "dumb" zombies that sort of get lost when they spawn in on hoard night, and automatically just attack the base. That probably isn't the right way to describe it, but yeah, it's a thing.

Sounds to me like FunPimps have a problematic case of Oppositional Defiance Disorder. Aside from never updating the console version of 7dtd, that's the thing that pisses me off most about them. They've lost sight of letting us have a satisfying hordenight where the zeds get chawn up on the walls and have become obsessed with opposing everything we think of - it's the 2A/ATF rivalry all over again.
Someone needs to have a very, very firm talk with FunPimps. Because this is not the way forward.

Something I have enjoyed doing in 7 Days to Die is making large buildings. Like my last run, I built a cathedral-a massive structure with a decorative wall around it and various other features. I mainly created a really cool house that housed my farms, dew collectors, and more. I'd gradually upgrade everything. I wasn't very fond of horde bases; I preferred having one base that served all purposes. The biggest downside is the tediousness of building, but it's somewhat enjoyable. Of course, the repairs and defense are more appealing to me because it involves running on a wall, sniping, dealing with vultures, and being more active than standing at a fighting position. It feels more survival-like and allows for building exploration with hundreds of shapes that most UA-camrs don't deal with. The most common ways people deal with hordes are the designs you've already stated. it might be a fresh way for you to play man though idk if it woould work well for your game style hope it helps for a new idea

When the game stage is higher, I like to experiment with "hit point" bases where I build 4 cubes with stairs inside with an electric vault door in, and a vault door at the top to a walkway
where I am on a solid cube in the middle, with some scaffolding ladder barricades in the middle of the 4 or 6, etc. cube tower paths up to the walkways. I have it so they pile up at the upper
door, and I can use exploding crossbow bolts on them. When they are about to break the door, I can close the lower door, and open up another lower door on another hollow tower up,
eventually on insane nightmare 120+ game stage they will get through, but it is scalable to more paths up. Essentially any way that the player can alter "block hit points" to control pathing.

I build horde bases just for the sheer fun of it, lol. I even purposely made them a lot weaker, and refuse to use any cheese methods...so it feels more like I'm a genuine survivor under harsh conditions and serious threats from zombies. Building horde bases are like a roleplaying stuff to me, and it's fun! I'm of those that enjoy zombies crushing my entire base down. That's the entire essence of 7 days to die. You are simply delaying the inevitable...your own final death. If you can have a base and become invincible for the rest of the game, then to me the fun is gone.

  • @oronk60
    @oronk60 6 місяців тому

I mean my cousin and I made something like a castle like 3-4 years ago with machinations around the walls of the base and murder holes above the doors so we could always pivot and take out any zombies trying to get us, we did that agin for this update using the pipe guns to defend it and it worked well. We almost died on the second horde so we built a 4 block deep trench 3 blocks wide and made the trench wall cobblestone. Were gonna fill the trench with wood spikes and add a perimeter wall before the trench so not even the crawlers can jump over.
The problem with our base is that if the zombies funnel in and attack one area they'll break through and start digging all the way up and on to the otherside of the trench, but that's fun af cause then we have to run back and rely on our last line of defence.

It's always irked me that horde bases are preferable to using your home because I love to build, constantly having ideas. The problem is that my builds are often larger than 50x50 - which means my walls are basically pointless. Moving to one side to defend makes them spawn inside my walls on the opposite side. So...I have to build a base specifically for horde night - it's not even hyper efficient because I despise building stuff that looks awful simply because it's the 'best' horde base design.
If I build something, it's going to look like it actually belongs in the world - almost like it was a prefab. Yet their changes actively discourage this.

My design for a horde base for the first few hordes on insane snow is a fortified box with hatches and stuff making sure zombies gather at the spot I want them to aka the front of the box where it's the most fortified and a few zombies hit the BACK of the box in 2 different but specific places.
it's as if 1 zombie from every 3rd wave gets stuck just whacking a random ass block at the back while the entire horde tries to break through the front.
For reference my horde base design is grounded and takes roughly an hour to build (and upgrade for the exp).

I crank up the ambient number a bit and use some of the mods (like the one GNS made) that make wandering hordes bigger and messier. Then I can pick a nice house to live in and just deal with the zombies that I accidently attract with screamers or by making noise. I think that given tfps crusade against fun I'm entirely justified basically breaking the game over my knee and giving em the finger. I want to explore and wander the apocalypse, not constantly have to expand and repair something only used for the horde. The wandering hordes you run into while exploring feel more fun to me so I go for settings/mods that expand those.
