  • With so many OS and software updates, and products being discontinued, the writing is now on the wall for separate audio interfaces for Serato DJ Pro. In the new episode of "Beatsource Tech", Mojaxx explains why that is a problem, and asks the industry to do something about it.

With my current set up, I'm not able to update my computer or Serato because if I do one more update, I'll lose compatibility with my SL4 which I spend nearly $1,000 on a few years ago. I think It's a vicious cycle between DJ's, Clubs & Companies... The DJ's want companies to make DVS boxes so we can use the clubs equipment but The Clubs are starting to get used to DJ's bringing their own equipment (controllers) so they don't have to spend money on buying/fixing/replacing it, meanwhile The Companies want both the club to upgrade all their equipment to the latest tech every year & simultaneously want DJ's to buy the latest controllers... so the companies are almost incentivized to phase out DVS precisely BECAUSE they know so many DJ's need it, they are strangling us into buying more expensive equipment to compensate.

I have to point out that a lot of the venues I play, are small bars or restaurant who are not in the position to invest thousands into DJ equipment, nor are the necessary space for a gargantuan DJ mixer (Rane 70 series, DJM S11). For me the best part about DVS was being able to integrate my setup into whatever existing equipment was already installed at the club REGARDLESS OF HARDWARE, and I knew I always had the freedom to do that because of my standalone audio interface. If I want to spin on a Xone: 92 or a rotary mixer or even a digital mixer whose firmware is out of date, I never had to worry about compatibility because my sound card was always in my bag. 1200s in the club? Older CDJs at a mate's house? No problem at all. Just pop in the appropriate control media and I'm up and running in minutes. Really hope someone steps up to fill this gap in the market.

So glad you posted this! I had this exact rant 2 months ago and ended up spending crazy money on a DS1 off eBay from Japan. I have a totally redundant SL4 which I also spent about £600 on only a year ago. Why does someone need to make another interface when the Rane ones already exist? This is on Serato and Rane to make the existing ones compatible. People shouldn’t have to buy another one! I’ve also always wanted Serato to open up compatibility with external interfaces for people wanting high end sound. Mahalo (Thanks) for bringing this up and aloha from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. 🤙🏽
So I purchased the Denon DJ DS1 in Feb 2021 when I couldn't find any Serato boxes, and eight months later, I found out the Denon box was discontinued. I was pretty disappointed; however, I'm still glad that it's still able to utilize the new Serato DJ Pro releases.
I have my Technics SH-EX1200 with Innofader, my Vestax PMC 06-Pro-VCA with innofader, and finally, my 'newer' DJ-Tech TRX Thud Rumble with innofaders. I use them for performances in the studio and at events. I'm an old-school local scratch DJ champion that doesn't really feel the need for the extra bells and whistles of the push-button mixers that average near $1KUSD - $2KUSD.
There is a Numark Scratch two-channel DJ mixer for Serato DJ Pro that goes for $500USD, but heck, I've got enough mixers as is.

Thank god someone is talking about this issue, outside the Serato forum.
I feel like I'm forced to switch to a DJ controller but I love my analog mixer and SL1200s. Also, I know this sounds silly, but I would have to get a smaller couch if I get a (bigger) digital mixer that IS supported. I'm currently using an old SL interface but my old laptop finally stopped working well enough to run the (very) old Serato version I was using.
I need to get a new laptop and a new SL interface so I can continue playing. I can get an SL4 from a friend but it's not supported on either M1 macs or Windows 11. And indeed, every single interface, including the Denon one has been discontinued.
I'm a Serato fan, but it looks like I'm forced to switch to something else if there's no new audio interface for Serato (or Serato support for existing audio interfaces).

Being able to bring legacy DJ gear back to life was a beautiful thing connecting the old and new. I have a SL2, SL3 & SL4 all dead. And I would still use them today if they were compatible. Traditionally DJ gear was about combining different equipment from manufacturers that the individual DJ prefers. Found an SL3 Box in a bag on the street back in 2013, used it for every gig I did for the best part of a decade - one of the luckiest experiences of my life! From crappy bars, to big festivals - there’s always been a need for a backup - and the SL3 was flawless, particularly when presented with Allen & Heath mixers for example which happens quite frequently. I really dislike the way the industry is moving into “controller” territory, I think it’s bound to encourage venues to skimp on vital equipment in favour of DJ’s bringing their own, which is going to lead to disparity in quality - plus an added pressure for those starting out to bankrupt themselves buying flash gear to keep up or meet the standard set by more established DJ’s. I sold my SL3 a couple of months back now, it was truly a sad moment - a lot of history hidden within that little blue box.

I agree with you buddy, l use a Denon ds1 interface that got damaged two weeks before my first gig of the year, and looking to buy it (at least a used one) couldn't find one!!! Fortunately, my audio tech fixed my ds1 before my gig! What a shame those companies are not manufacturing them anymore

Thank you for raising this topic. Since recently updating my laptop to to macOS Catalina because the latest version of Serato DJ longer supports Mojave, I did not try connecting my Rane SL3 until you just mentioned it in this video. I am shocked to see that Serato stopped supporting this device after Serato DJ 2.5.5. I occasionally use my DJM-909 and SL3 with Serato DJ - apparently my only option is to install Serato DJ 2.5.5 separately for that use case. What a nuisance!
There absolutely needs to be an interface to fill this void - preferably with Core Audio drivers that is future proof. I will gladly buy it.

I still use my OG SL3 box because I still love my Rane Empath mixer (the preamps!).
Also, I've also found that whenever I've recorded a mix done on a controller, rather than on my Empath+SL3, it doesn't sound as good: the SL3 preamps have a "sound" that I love. (Your milage may vary.) (Yes, this is when I use real records rather than control vinyl.)

This is one of the reasons why I got my Rane Seventy, even tho I had kit that would work, but all the old boxes are either unsupported by newer OS's or they may or may not work. A 2in/2out box I think still can have a place in today's market. Way cheaper to get if you have an analog mixer and turntables/CDJs.

You are 1000% right - we def need the boxes back! But you forgot to mention that they were also THE CHEAPEST way to get a scratch live or serato dj dvs setup, which is a huge plus for beginners and amateurs who just don't have enough money or don't want to spend so much on a mixer with a built in serato audio interface.
As for me I sold my SL4 last year after moving on a M1 Pro MBP with Monterey and got myself a Rane 70 which is superdope when you are at home. But it is a real problem when you plan to rock a gig at some small bar and don't want to bring such a big and heavy thing with you. That's why I also have an AKAI AMX which is nice, but I'm really missing that SL interface, it's versatility and small size ..

I feel like we need a disruptive underdog like Phase to help make one of these products again. Although, as you say it's not difficult for these manufacturers to do. It's all down to cost vs. benefit vs. strategic planning for controllers / other products. The use case for a DVS box is still definitely there. Just the other night I used club kit on a NXS2 Mixer and had audio issues. It turned out that the internal soundcard inside the mixer had issues. So I had to whip out my SL2 for the rescue to go direct RCA in.

Really pleased you are talking about this.
There is one area you haven’t mentioned that I think is even bigger than individual DJs needs. I work at an independent radio station and we have an SL4 box in our setup to enable DJs to use Serato with turntables or CDJ (HiD mode as well). It is not practical buying a DJ mixer with Serato built in. With over 100 DJs with varying skills and knowledge from radio selectors to working DJs, we need a more broadcast focused mixer. The SL4 box enables Serato without the presumption of it being in a club or pro DJ setup. We are having heaps of DJs upgrade their Macs by accident, not realizing they are removing their ability to use Serato to do radio shows. I think this is a huge problem and will hurt Serato in the long run.
Question. Do we know how many SL boxes are out there? I am sure it is quite a few. I can’t believe between Serato and InMusic that they think everyone with an SL box is just going to buy a controller or mixer.
Thanks for your video. Total support

Its such an odd situation. Djs need options, if you have to use older gear its a must. Tbh mines long been relegated to being just a soundcard (hopefully it will continue to work as one?) But it does seem to be pushing people to controllers, or relying on club kit/official accessory route. Defo a gap in the market still.

This is bullSh!t Serato, I have been your customer for 20 years, you started the company as digital vinyl solution, and I understand some hardware can become incompatible, but there is no new hardware to replace it? So vinyl DJs, which supported you through all these years, are now obsolete? Why is there no new audio card to support your software? How is carrying a mixer around everywhere a solution? Knowing about all this discontinued hardware audio cards who is going to buy a mixer that is going to be later obsolete too? They should release a new box or open up the software to be used with any other compatible soundcard.
I would buy the new Serato soundcard if we were forced to upgrade, but leaving us without a solution is not how you treat your lifelong customers. I have already started my migration to Traktor, I can't believe how this company has gone so downhill...

Still rocking my SL3 in my setup. Still use a mid 2010 MacBook Pro with maxed RAM and SSD with Serato Scratch Live, not Serato DJ or whatever it’s called now. I bought the thing to be able to use my 1200s to spin digital files seamlessly with my vinyl, and it still accomplishes that perfectly. I do agree though. People dropped good money on the interfaces…and they should still be supported.

Either serato and rane put in the extra R&D to continuously support these sound cards or serato should unlock the software to use any sound card like their competitors. I don’t have one of these boxes but I know they are very popular amongst other working DJs to this day. It’s wrong to force them to stay on an outdated version of software just so they can keep working.

  • @bassbombdom

This is something that needed to be addressed for a long time. I think Rane shot themselves in the foot with the SL Boxes because they were made to such a high quality that they rarely needed repairing. I'll be honest and say I've never bought a piece of Rane hardware new because I know the quality is there so I may as well save money and get it used. Because of this, I think it's forced them to phase it out to get people onto the new stuff... I don't think this is Serato, I think this is Rane/inMusic

    • @wurlyone4685
      @wurlyone4685 2 роки тому +1

Yep but the nuts thing there - no-one is going to go from having an SL box, to forking out for a DVS rane mixer because it's such a HUGE jump in money (and even if they would, rane don't even *make* a 3 or 4 channel DVS mixer - so there's literally no replacement for the SL3 of SL4 in ranes range!).
So it's cut their legacy support costs, but it's not going to generate new sales for them like they probably hoped it would.

    There probably is
    1) a very small market for that. Even NI discontinued their larger 5ch interface and hasn't updated the 3ch one in ages.
    2) no manufacturer willing to sell you an interface for $300 when they can stop supporting your $1,500 battle mixer and sell you a new one at that price.
For us customers, that's really bad. And it creates a ton of unnecessary waste.

On the flip, I understand the "industry" making a collective decision to phase them out to encourage the update of audio equipment to the new generation of Mixers/Controllers. But ultimately this doesn't help longstanding DJ's!
