Originally from NY. Been here 11 years. I prepared myself for the heat and monsoon seasons. My biggest adjustment i had to make during my first year here was when the weather cooled down around October and November. 60-70 degree days are nice for winter, but your blood thins out so much that it actually feels way cooler than your used to. Winter nights can be brutally cold. The good news for me is that there is never any snow here
Very accurate! Lived in Phoenix since 1969. Everything in this video is spot on; however due to climate change our summers/monsoon season has really changed over the years. We used to have a big storm literally every afternoon. Now some summers literally have only one or two big wind/rain events all summer. The summer heat is brutal-it takes a lot of getting used to...105 degrees at midnight is hard for a lot of people to grasp. Finally our tap water is awful. It always tastes like clorox. I only use bottled water for cooking/coffee etc., lots of hard water scaling on you fixtures etc. Not a lot of culture in Phoenix...for such a large metro area not a lot to do except the trendy bar scene, which is not to everyones liking. Only places for food after 11pm are fast food, Dennys or a 50s retro place called Five 'n Diner. Town more or less "closes" after midnight.
Streets - don't forget Hayden/McCormick. That road changes in an intersection. Love the monsoons but in 30 years, I never saw a Haboob. Yeah, that direction change during rush hour is challenging. I never had to go through one though. The HOV lane got me confused in Utah. I thought you could do that in Utah. Nope. One thing I must say is that those of us who are basically natives don't like all of the people coming from California. Phoenix/Scottsdale/PV used to be a sleepy little Western town. Now, it's mini LA.
Oh forgot one thing...Terrible air quality here, some of the worst in the nation. People used to move here for their asthma, but now its one of the worst places to live if you have any lung issues. In the winter we have many "no burn" days when using your fireplace is prohibited. Allergies are bad here too. Phoenix is one giant "dust bowl". Be prepared to dust your home constantly!
LOL, as a native South Floridian (Miami/Fort Lauderdale) first, born and raised here is also a rare thing, the same as in Phoenix. Also, the term "snow bird" is used here to mean the same thing, people who winter here and live somewhere up North the rest of the year.
The best thing about moving to Phoenix for 10 years was it made moving back to Tucson seem soooo much cooler. Phoenix is good for big city stuff. Otherwise its hell. No one would even notice if an A-bom went off there.
Very useful. There's no way I could live there but would consider a visit...in winter. Just saw that it is 6c in the early morning in March so seems to get cold too...
Thank you for your video. You seem knowledgeable on all the 55+ communities (probably from another video of yours). I’ll be in touch soon to discuss what my wife and I are looking for.
There is at least one 'Avenue' that's east of Central, but it's about 1000-1 any of your listeners will ever travel it. It's the shortest street in central Phoenix. It has an LDS Church right in the middle of it.
Great video. Very nice info, most of which I did not know of before. Had no idea the Monsoons have Hurricane force winds. I wonder if that causes Power Outages. Here in Louisiana, where I have lived for almost 4 years. Even a Tropical Storm will knock out our power, and that is not even Hurricane Force winds (that is only maybe 50 MPH or more).
The job market has came to a halt. With so many people moving here it has made it difficult to find a job that can make this place affordable. I moved here 3 years ago and have found it difficult to find a job even with an MBA. Beware.
There are bad and good on moving to all cities . Compare a haboob to a tornado or a hurricane? There is no comparison. The road system is awesome here one great thing of living here. And it’s very easy to get around without using the interstate. I think people tend to use the freeway when they don’t need to. Too many Californians made it purple. We don’t need another California. Remember why you left CA. AZ is not all desert that’s misinformation. People think of snowbirds as negative because of traffic. The traffic in the winter is horrible and you notice many cars with out of state plates. Arizonans plan for the heat. I go out between 5am and 9 am and again at 7pm to 9pm to avoid the brutal heat.
My wife and I both ended up going to college out here, but we stayed because of how much we loved the city. We came from a smaller town in SoCal, and Phoenix was everything we were hoping for. Plus our cost of living would maybe be double back in CA! We really wanted to own a home quickly, and we weren’t going to be able to do that in SoCal. Phoenix gave us a chance to get a starter home in our first year of marriage, and now that we’ve been here a while we love it
Depends on what you are looking for, but my favorites are Peoria, Surprise, or Chandler/Gilbert. Peoria and Surprise you can find some in the 400s and are in the west valley. Chandler/Gilbert will likely be over 500k and in the East valley. When are you making the move?
I hated the California desert but there’s no much beauty here and I love biking the trails and roller blading around the community lakes :) I’ve met some die hard natives here and they hate Californians and where I am in East Valley they are die hard conservative. Omg don’t pronounce Prescott wrong 😂 they’ll laugh and tell you to go back to California 😂 Love this video!
Part of the reason why folks are moving to Arizona from California is because they don't like how the state has turned out, prices, taxes etc. Hope they realize that too many liberal ideas has turned California into the state it has become, causing alot of folks too leave. Unfortunately, with more folks moving there, housing prices, both rentals and homes for sale, have gone up and making it more expensive. Also, you said about the water tasting issue, but didn't say anything about future shortage issues, but with the continued population growth, and lower water levels in all of the big water reservoirs, its not hard to see some kind of restrictions on water consumption in the future. Still love the state and greater Phoenix area, but I think that it might have dropped down a little on our retirement location list. A few years left before final decision making needs to be made, so hopefully things will settle down some, and we might still end up there in the future.
I have heard a few different people mention future shortages, but I have also heard the city does have some things in place to hopefully slightly improve the situation. Phoenix is a great place to retire still, but there a few other great destinations well. Many of the retirement communities out here feel like their own oasis with everything they have to do.
To be honest as a native Californian I find funny that all these people leaving Californian are most likely people who moved their years ago from a different state. Came to the state trashed it and now are leaving when things get tuff. California was flooded with foreigners years ago so I don't feel bad when it happens to other states. SUCK IT UP!!!!
I still think Cali is the best place if you want to be in the sunbelt region. Traveled all over the country and definitely think Texas is the worst compared to Cali, Florida, and Arizona. 1. Cali 2. Arizona 3. Florida 4. Texas
that's just because of your politics. but people are choosing quite the opposite. 1. Florida, 2. Texas, 3. Arizona, 4. California. Arizona used to be #1, but we had too many californians move here and now we are more politically like them, so the progress will grind to a halt, income inequality will soar like in CA and homelessness will too.

Technically, Arizona has not "always been a red state." But yes, Republicans have dominated the state legislature for decades (since before you were born). We have had Democrat governors since you were born (Babbit, Napolitano, and the current one), but they're really just "Republican lite."
Haven’t seen super strong politics on either side, what??? I still have yet to meet a Biden supporter here lol. If you think we voted blue last time, you’ve been lied to.
I'm seeing your post 11 months after you wrote it and on the verge of the midterms. I agree 100%! Kari Lake will be Arizona's next governor unless Katie Hobbs frauds her way into it. No way a majority of voters will vote in Hobbs over Lake. If Hobbs gets in, AZ will become a train wreck.
It’s hot, but I will take heat over shoveling snow any day! We get about 3 months of over 100 heat, but other than that I’m loving our weather. Where are you at now?
I was dragged here kicking and screaming a couple months ago. I do NOT understand why everybody is pouring into this place! It's not fit for man nor beast. The "dry heat" is out of hand 10 mos out of the year, so good luck ENJOYING any of the desert beauty. Rents are nothing less than criminal, with no end in sight. Leave this place to the locals, who thrive here. They are a special breed, and we are only ruining their home and way of life.

I have watched lots of videos from realtors & others about moving to AZ and this was by far the best. Very precise, clearly presented and informative.
I appreciate that! I'm glad you liked it!

The haboob thing came out about 10 years ago, here in Phoenix they have always been called dust storms...
The haboob is an Arabic term that used to describe a hot dusty windy weather condition.
yup, another way we can tell people aren't from here. they call it a haboob. lol
Yep. I remember when they started using that term. The storms didn't change, don't know why we needed to change the name.
