I took a comedy improv classes at the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater in NYC. Every teacher was in awe of their work. After being in bands for many years, I firmly believe they were basically an amazing punk band in the form of improv comedians.
This has been one of my favorite sketches since I was a kid, and I somehow missed the reason that Kevin bought him the tap shoes, and that his dad was wearing them when he snuck into his room to try to strangle him, and his parting line about having to buy carpet. Even darker than I remember... But even funnier!
Coulda been based on my father...probably a lot of other ones too. The only thing you can do is turn it in to humor! Kevin stayed at a hotel I worked at back in the 90s. Very cool guy!
This is so darkly funny. There is just something about the way Dave Foley says " I would never buy you a puppy" just makes me laugh so much. Damn i can't stop laughing at this.
One of the funniest sketches on one of the funniest comedy shows of all time. You can debate the merits all you want...Python, SNL, MadTV, In Living Color & The Kids all had hits & misses - it's the batting average that counts and these guys have far more homeruns than strikeouts. "Have a small drink to celebrate...snowflake becomes blizzard...see day one"
Yeah, the shoes were to warn him. Notice the dad was looking for his moccasins later. I am glad you finally found Kids, they rank among the funniest EVER.
According to Kevin Mcdonald the whole "how many girls called you today" part of this sketch was true. His father actually said it to him when he was younger.
There have been a lot of great sketch comedy shows through the years. The whitest kids'u know, Monty Python, The State, SNL (the original lineup and the sandler, hartman, farley and spade lineups in particular). But in my humble opinion, The Kids in the Hall was the greatest.
One of the funniest things I've ever seen, thanks for posting it. "Oh, did I wake ya son! Jez I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake you up there, I wuz just lookin' for my moccasins..."
@artwritesyou Yeah, but I think he's been extremely successful at turning a negative into a positive - you know he made a one man show in 2007 (i think) out specifically about that? called Hammy & the Kids. I don't know if he's still doing it, but it got amazing reviews.
Python and Kids in the Hall. The best comedy ever produced. And you know what the kicker is? Lorne Michaels producer of SNL was the producer of this show too. These guys were geniuses. SNL mostly schmucks.
almost everyone in the show was homosexual....and it was priceless comedy...im so glad KITH has a cult following now....i was raised on this on public television....ahaha....im so impressed now that i look back at it
Kevin says that this was actually based on his real father...only the part about the tap dancing shoes was made up. (He says this in the commentary for this episode)
Christ, Scott's the only one who's gay! The others are either married or in relationships with women. However, unlike most American actor-comedians, they're comfortable enough in their sexuality to be able to play women and gay male characters as "real people" without worrying about the audience thinking they're gay. Sheesh.
ooh man. that's a tough call there. My personal favorite from KITH is Mark, I think. Of course, he's the one that pretty much had a flop career after Kids....

The really creepy thing about this hilarious sketch is that it is apparently based on Kevin McDonald's real father. Yikes.
+SgtBaker16 ~ We all have assholes, too!
+SgtBaker16 - Sorry I upset you, snowflake.
Confirmed, in the Comedy Punks documentary. The "zero plus zero" line is his dad's.
"daddy drank for the government" - priceless, i stil say that line all the time
I discovered this show when I was 13, and this sketch made me laugh so hard.
Although at the time everyone thought I was a weirdo for liking this :-(
WHY THE HELL HASN'T EVERYONE HEARD OF THE KIDS IN THE HALL? THESE SKETCHES SHOULD BE 10x AS FAMOUS AS SOME OF THE CRAP ON SNL.
Precisely.
Coulda been based on my father...probably a lot of other ones too. The only thing you can do is turn it in to humor! Kevin stayed at a hotel I worked at back in the 90s. Very cool guy!
Just listened to the Marc Maron podcast with Kevin McDonald and it reminded me of this sketch. Crazy!
It's the only Kids in the Hall sketch I vividly remember. Hilarious and frightening.
This is so darkly funny.
There is just something about the way Dave Foley says " I would never buy you a puppy" just makes me laugh so much.
Damn i can't stop laughing at this.
"Daddy drank for the goverment!"
Our tax dollars at work.
One of the funniest sketches on one of the funniest comedy shows of all time.

"Have a small drink to celebrate...snowflake becomes blizzard...see day one"
ahhhh fond memories of my childhood
This was the very first Kids in the Hall sketch I ever saw. My oldest sister got me into them in 1991. Brilliant.
"Oh and son. I have quiet shoes."
I've got quiet shoes.... lol
"And Son, I'm willing to do it!"
Absolute classic...
TAP SHOES?!?!
damn this brings me back to the 90's damn i always loved to watch this
the best kids in the hall skit
Yeah, the shoes were to warn him. Notice the dad was looking for his moccasins later. I am glad you finally found Kids, they rank among the funniest EVER.
According to Kevin Mcdonald the whole "how many girls called you today" part of this sketch was true. His father actually said it to him when he was younger.
One of my many favorite KITH skits. The early seasons of KITH, SNL, and SCTV all produced pure comedy platinum--ahh, the good ol' days!
"i've got quite shoes" i love that line
one of the best kids skits ever.
But on the way home, I got hungry, and I ate it!!! lmao
Just kidding--I would never buy you a puppy!
I would never get you a puppy!
There have been a lot of great sketch comedy shows through the years. The whitest kids'u know, Monty Python, The State, SNL (the original lineup and the sandler, hartman, farley and spade lineups in particular). But in my humble opinion, The Kids in the Hall was the greatest.
Funny you should say that. Kevin did a sketch called Wrong Number( here on UA-cam) where he sounds JUST like Elmo.
I'm kidding...I'd never buy you a puppy!
This is one of their greatest skits!
'I got quiet shoes.'
this is one of my favorite KITH sketches EVER!
This is the kind of parent I aspire to be.
First video I EVER saw of the Kids in the Hall, I fell in love :D
This is one of my favorite skits of kith ever. I doubt you'd like them if you didn't find this one funny
My daddy drank for the government too.
You just get a good nights sleep I'm going to go out and buy a lot of carpeting
"Daddy couldn't dance...Oh daddy could drink"
lol, he gave him the tap shoes so he would wake up if he came in his room LOL
"I'm joking! I'd never buy you a puppy!"
Fond childhood memories from Kevin.
brings me back to my own childhood
TAP-SHOES???!!!!
This skit is hilarious...but I guess I shouldn't laugh too much--my mom had to go through an abusive childhood.
all you have to be is quiet and willing to do it. i love it.
Oh, did I wake you son?
"I'd never buy you a puppy!"
Top 3 skit.
didn't think about that, but that makes it even funnier.
@arononkorr I can't think of any other reason somebody would dislike this sketch.
I loved this skit, reminds me of the holidays. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
My favorite KITH sketch!
excellent taste, my good man, excellent taste.
"Daddy couldn't dance...oh Daddy could drink?!?" LMFAO
One of the funniest things I've ever seen, thanks for posting it.
"Oh, did I wake ya son! Jez I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake you up there, I wuz just lookin' for my moccasins..."
apparently this skit is based on kevin's real relationship with his alcoholic dad
I dunno why but I always cracked up at how Dave said "What the hell is this?!"
2:00 Daddy drank for the government!!! Priceless!
2:03 is a total muppet nod.
That line always killed me.
@artwritesyou Yeah, but I think he's been extremely successful at turning a negative into a positive - you know he made a one man show in 2007 (i think) out specifically about that? called Hammy & the Kids. I don't know if he's still doing it, but it got amazing reviews.
LOL I love KITH ...I've quiet shoes...
@Catalina650013 Yeah, that's why they only have five seasons, a movie and multiple tours.
"I'm joking. I never bought you a puppy."
LOL!!!!!
This is my dad, except he wasn't a drinker. Still love him tho...
Awesome sketch.
Does anyone know where I can find "the Chase"? I think its from season 2
Python and Kids in the Hall. The best comedy ever produced. And you know what the kicker is? Lorne Michaels producer of SNL was the producer of this show too. These guys were geniuses. SNL mostly schmucks.
this is hilarious, but look for the sweat cologne skit you'll laugh your ass off!
almost everyone in the show was homosexual....and it was priceless comedy...im so glad KITH has a cult following now....i was raised on this on public television....ahaha....im so impressed now that i look back at it

zero + zero = fAAAAAG !
@DemonWarp65 How could you forget the immortal "Mr. Show"?

Christ, Scott's the only one who's gay! The others are either married or in relationships with women.

@1Tonymontana1 Well i guess its better that its about all their dads instead of just one. What I read was on IMDB so anyone could have posted that.
“Daddy drank for the government”
28 people never had girls call them.
right in the childhood
Daddy drank for the government.
"And remember..... I can murder you in your sleep!"
I love this sketch! Thank you for posting:)
"Think about it, you little mathematician". XD
28 people had a daddy that drank.
@evkero What was the sketch? I'd love to see it!
2:08 his son has quite a big hand :P hehe i love KITH just jokin around
Father of the year
like looking into my own childhood lol
apparently his father was actually like that!
31 people had daddies that didn't drink for the government.
lmao, daddy drank for the government
"i'm joking...i'd never buy you a puppy."
ooh man. that's a tough call there.
My personal favorite from KITH is Mark, I think. Of course, he's the one that pretty much had a flop career after Kids....
Tapp shoes!
With me it was more like hearing the same stories over and over and over again.
I’m joking...I’d never buy you a puppy!
Just the way he delivers that line just gets me.
I was just looking for my moccasins!!
awesome!!
@ Ayu30: The Whitest Kids U Know is pretty funny. But The Kids In The Hall will always be my favorite. :)
I read on IMDB that minus the tap shoes everything in this sketch was really based on Kevin's dad, i hope thats a lie. T_T
Oh, where did you get that info?
Ahh...this hit close to home...funny though.
I think only Scott is "out". I know Dave and Kevin have kids. They wouldn't really care though, great bunch of guys.
You knowLauren Michaels produced this show too right? Yea it was more cutting edge and they were smart to end it at five years.
Tap Shoes?!
