This Jungian Arthurian concept of "entering the forest at the point that looks the darkest to you" reminds me of Stoicism, the saying that "the obstacle is the way" essentially: the thing that you think is the biggest obstacle to achieve your goal IS the exact thing you need to almost embrace in a sense, in order to overcome and get to the goal.

When I first discovered Jordan Peterson around 2016/17 I was in the depths of hell at that particular time.
I wont go into every sordid detail but by then I was a binge drinker that found himself addicted to crack cocaine and heroin.
At the time of writing this (Feb 2021) I'll be 48 this coming March
Now I'm clean and in the process of creating a path to business armed with a few thousand in the bank and it started with cleaning up the room I was in and then sorting the entire flat.
There's still plenty of work to do on myself ! But I am in a much better place now thanks to this incredible bloke .. anyone else here have a similar story?

Over the past ten years I've traveled through the depths of dark depressions, through world's of unending pain that stole my appetite, my ability to work, to shower and to sleep. I somehow managed to keep a hold of my now wife. Become more consistent in going to work. I keep up my therapy to sort out all of my past, present and future. An I continued to add Titans of thought such as Peterson, Hitchins and the like who have helped me through an opressive religious upbringing. An now I have a wife coupled with a few loyal and healthy family members and a few friends who help to support me away from the black hole of chaos that looms just outside of me giving in and allowing fear to consume me. Anyone with depression please walk down the path you least want to and find the healthy supports you need and please hang on and face your darkness. Jedon Forcet I am in the same phase of my life. I just don’t know how to get out of this rut but I know there’s light at the end of the tunnel. The thing with me is, I can bend circumstances to my likeness, it’s still not out of hands, but I don’t find the meaning in doing anything, in life itself. But now I’ve understood that meaning of life is what meaning we give it. I hope to change my life, and also know that the power lies within me, I need not look elsewhere.

@JedonForcet thank you for this post. I'm not sure how I got to this particular video or thread. But here I am reading your comment, while feeling once again submersed in this surreal sense of despair. I was contemplating leaving this planet again for good and yet, your comment stopped that maddening internal process of repetitivion within me --- and your Spirit spoke to places in me that haven't heard the voice of reason, or of hope, or of humanity in a very long time. My heart 💔 broken as she may be, felt the sincerity of your own heart, to push forward and through this chaos no matter how bleak the future seemingly presents itself. Please continue your journey 🙏 here, for this world has taken a dark and forlorn turn, foreseen by too many prophets and sages, to ever be truly dismissed by those who are wise. But you bring actual hope, active compassion, sincerity and kindness, most importantly the hard won ability to forthrightly :::express::: your authentic individual nature. Stay strong. Stay human. Stay true. And thank you, thank you for NOT giving up. This world, our world, needs you now more than ever before.

In exposure therapy, this is very well understood. Getting someone over their fear of something has to be in quarter baby steps and then even half of that. It takes a while and it's supposed to.

      Very true!

    • @TheSocratesofAthens
      @TheSocratesofAthens 7 місяців тому

I understand. I really love what Peterson does but his advice can be very simplistic at times. For example, he says "you have to face the unknown 'voluntarily'", rather than to avoid it. But the problem is the gap between avoidance and voluntarily facing your fear. What does the word "voluntarily" mean and how do we reach that state? What I gather is that people essentially "unlearn" unhealthy thought patterns and assumptions. This enables the patient to face their fear without falling apart since they get some long withheld reassurance that they needed, probably since childhood. Further, sometimes a direct approach is not best: you have to learn to pick your battles. Again, Peterson takes us in the right direction but not always to the right conclusion. He's flawed, like most others, and it's important to put no one onto a pedestal.

2:18 I heard of Superman's origin story but I never thought of Superman having a "heavenly" and "earthly" set of parents. This makes Superman seem like Christ or Hercules, kind of a cross between god and man. Interesting to look at pop culture characters in a Jungian, mythological, or religious lens. Even if the hero has superpowers, he will not be relatable to the reader at all if he doesn't have at least 1 weak point, so that makes sense that they made "cryptonite", his. Not sure if Peterson is aware of the popular Japanese comic Dragon Ball, but the protagonist, Goku is very similar in the two points above. Goku got shipped off from a planet that got destroyed, and his weak point is his tail.

Don't be an idiot. Fear is self imposed but danger is real. You might not be in risk by your age but you could risk others by your actions. Stay calm but don't do an ignorant act just the sake of your ego. You can still do the right thing and not let fear control you at the same time.

😂🤣 So.. I’m going to echo what a commenter a couple of comments down said. They also stated that this is very Jungian (Carl Jung). Anyway, they said he is basically saying that whatever it is that you want the most will be found wherever you want to look at the least. You know, the whole “the thing that you most need is found where you don’t want to go/ do” sort of thing. I hope this helps. I tried my best. 🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

Jordan... Listen, brother. I've been watching quite a bit of your stuff lately. I do genuinely think that your a good guy. I think you have a good heart.
But, boy oh boy... Do you ever love to 'Ramble'.
When you walk out on a stage, you should always get The DJ to play 'Rambling' Man' by The Allman Brothers Band.
This video was allegedly supposed to be about 'facing your fears and presumably offering suggestions to help aid in the process. Well, suffice to say, you forgot (AGAIN) to even mention the intended topic.
You started out talking about The Esoteric Concept of The Holy Grail and you finished by comparing and contrasting Lennin and Stalin.
    I ain't mad, tho. I think it's downright hilarious
Oh... And as far as 'The Holy Grail' is concerned, I've heard conflicting theories on WHAT it actually is, but I can't remember any.
Either way, 'The Holy Grail' was allegedly discovered by The Knights Templar who were stationed on the Temple Mount where Solomon's Temple previously stood.
In 1197 CE, Saladin and his Army tried to regain control of 'The Holy Land' and everybody was 'Kung Fu Fighting Again'... Until Fri, Oct, 13th, 1307 when The Roman Catholic Church convicted all The Knights Templar of Heresy. Many were executed, including their leader, Issues Dr Molay... The remainder of the KT fled, allegedly to Scotland, because Scotland had already been excommunicated by The Roman Catholic Church, and because bagpipes sound so utterly divine.
They allegedly then formed The Order of Free masonry, and the rest... As they say, is History!

Peterson has unfortunately NO CLUE about living in a communistic country. It is not true that people lived in fear and did not say the truth. This might be correct when describing Russia at certain times, but for sure not when describing Poland or Tschechoslovakia or Yugoslavia.
