This man can sing!!! His tone, range, vibrato, runs, control...he's got it all! I believe he's a countertenor. They have a higher range than a tenor. Notice how easily he sings... even the high notes?? Absolutely stunning performance! Loved your reaction!
Phrasing, almost yodeling, so very smooth; breath control exemplary. No strain to reach the notes; no vocal "stretching" or "searching" to get to the exact pitch -- he's right on target every time! Compliments also to the live orchestra for their flawless, perfectly tuned playing and volume control. Mr. Hatfield was a true ARTISTE.

That's how I see it too. A lot of people comment that he is showing 'I nailed it" but to me it seems like he's feeling he has given it his all and is hopeful, asking did it come across? Anyway just a lovely ending to a performance for the ages! 💙

You said he was effortless. The way I think of it is that he looks like he's singing in the shower or in his car on the way to work. There is absolutely NO effort or strain. There is only that beautiful, beautiful voice. No one will ever top or even equal this version of UM, no, not even Elvis. I love Elvis' singing but I think he would have been well advised to leave this particular song alone. Once Bobby Hatfield sung it, it stayed sung! BTW, if you are tempted to sing this in your audition for some TV talent show I have just one thing to say to you....DON'T!
A refreshing and descriptive reaction to just the most beautiful, heartfelt and moving performance I have ever seen. Bobby Hatfield - the voice of an angel. An angel with soul. He immerses himself completely in the intent of the lyrics and melody, which makes every word and note meaningful and poignant. Incomparable! A gift to us all. RIP and thank you Bobby Hatfield. 🕊💜 🤍 🔥

As a tenor Bobby actually had a 5 octave vocal range which allowed him to hit the high soprano notes with such ease, anyhow I enjoyed your comments and it nice to hear you could appreciate this beautiful singer and those eyes.
I just love how you picked up on so many of the subtleties in the performance like the look he gives when he says "are you" right before he breaks out. That was one of the first things I noticed. They say that his mom was in the audience and I'm guessing that a lot of that extra emotion and the countertenor range at the end may have had something to do with that. That lip bite is so cute like "I nailed it". Keep up the good work.
daXmusiX. I'm so glad you appreciate this song so much. I literally cry when I hear it, and I've listened to it I know over a hundred times. There are literally no words to praise Bobby Hatfield's voice and performance enough ! And to Mr. North who wrote the melody !!!!!!
I had read accounts that, at this taping of the Andy Williams Show, his mother was in the audience (possibly his father too) and Bobby was a little nervous going into the song. The moment you mention towards the end when he went from being somewhat playful to taking on the more serious, emotional look for a moment, was, I believe, because he was gearing up for the climax, and he so wanted the ending to be "perfect" for his mother, and as you noted, he absolutely nailed it, hence the cheeky lip-bite at the end. He knew he had made her proud.
I've watched scores and scores of reaction videos to this song and you are one of the most astute of all commentators. I was especially happy that you called out (as only a few have) Bobby's second "Are you..." at the 6:30 mark and the earnest way he sang -- nearly spoke -- those words, with the head nod that made it so incredibly believable and personal. It was as if we were illicitly entering as unworthy interlopers into a private moment between the singer and his beloved. Bobby strategically and yet seamlessly deployed nearly every conceivable nuance and coloration that any singer could possibly muster to any song, and let's face it --- Bobby's vocal portfolio was as big as a steamer trunk as compared with other singers' "bag of tricks." Bobby suffered from terrible stage fright and so wanted to perform well on this October 25, 1965 edition of The Andy Williams Show, as Bobby's mother was in the audience. The lip bite at the end of the song was no doubt an acknowledgement that he had done well for "Ma." The multi-talented Robert Lee Hatfield, Born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Class President at Anaheim High, football standout, co-captain of the basketball team, Bobby gave up a career in professional baseball to give us the lasting legacy of his other-worldly voice. A once--in-forever talent, a serenading angel come to earth. And we are blessed to have seen and heard him.

It's so good to see how this affected you--I get chills each time I hear it. Knowing you loved his voice, I believe you would enjoy hearing some of his other solos. He sang "You Alone" and "MY Prayer" originally done by Tony Williams and the Platters also a great group from the doo-wop era. Bobby also did "Somewhere" from West Side Story, "I Believe", and a jazzed up version of "Summertime". You can pull all these on You Tube. Hope to hear you react to these songs. I believe you will be glad you did. Thanks, Cathy Farrell
He was just awesome. I don't know how someone could have ever done this any better than he did. Exactly, I noticed that too he was actually pleading and asking.
Nobody will ever top what he did with this song. He was singing his heart out and it came through beautifully. He enjoyed singing it and it showed in every note. There will never be anyone who can top him. I still enjoy it as much or more now than I did when I first heard it. He sings it so effortlessly and each note is beautiful. The song seems like it was made just for him to do and it will never be sung so perfectly as when he sang it. He had such perfect control and every note seems so effortless. You never once saw any evidence of any strain to reach a note. Bill had a beautiful lower range and they were awesome together. They made beautiful music together and will always be remembered.
Notice how he smiles and bites his lip? He knows at that moment he nailed that performance. It was absolutely perfect. God bless him for leaving this song to remember him by.
He does have a 3 oct range. He covers 2 and a half in this song. But he can go, and control higher AND lower than this. God laid a great gift on this man. May he RIP.
This was from an episode of The Andy Williams Show in 1965. Both he and Bill Medley appeared on the episode, but only Bobby did this number. Magnificent.
This is Bobby's song! He nailed it! No one can sing this song better than he does. I was lucky to be able to see him perform this in 1965 on the Andy Williams show. I was teenager at that time. Perfection!!!! RIP Bobby! ❤❤❤❤
I have watched dozens of reactions to this song. I liked yours the best. We are about the same age and I feel exactly the same as you do on every point! I believe this is the best all-time live performance of "Unchained Melody" or ANY song, for that matter!
I remember when I was ten years old listening to my older female cousins playing the record of BH singing this song. I really liked it then and I still do to this very day.
This is live performance is actually far better than the studio/record version most would be familiar with from the movie Ghost...this live version is quite different and far more powerful! Quite right...3 octave voice and he breezed through two octaves in this live version.
All the more remarkable when you note his visible nervousness at some points. I think his mother was in the audience. This song and his performance puts the ladies in a trance.
This performance was one of the very first things I watched on YT back in 2006 plus or minus a year. It is the song of a prisoner to his wife and written for the 1955 film "Unchained".
I am 74 yrs and will never forget when the Righteous Brothers came out. My ex husband has passed away. We both loved these guys when they came out in 1964. Rip Bobby! We miss you! 💖

This song is clearly Bobby's but I always have a little regret that we haven't ever been able to experience both the guys sing this together. Thunder and Silk as I call them, but may change this to Thunder and Velvet after this review. I also like the full clip of this with them with Andy Williams laughing and joking, they were so unpretentious and humble. Will the world ever see their like again?
@@rubydazzler Actually, you probably have heard them both …. On the studio version Bill is one of the background singers that come in at about halfway through and in their outdoor concerts he also backs Bobby up. In a couple of videos you can see him (just have to look past Bobby 😁) ua-cam.com/video/n2R_tKIlR2c/v-deo.html
Spot on assessment dXX. Mr Hatfields almost conversational style in his singing is uniquely effective. Karen Carpenter also had this remarkable gift. Both would be on my Mt Rushmore with Elvis and Ray Charles. The last note is either a G4 or a G#4. depending on the speed of the playbacks you hear on other reaction videos. Yours is a perfect G4. The songs key is C. So it ends on the 5th. A note that most singers will never reach. Remarkable. Great video. Thanks for sharing, RNB
Rick N Backer ... Thanks for your insights on the notes. And yes, Karen Carpenter would be the perfect female counterpart to the easiness and grace of the voice of Bobby. For Mount Rushmore, I think I would have Bobby and Karen and Roy Orbison, and I’m not sure about the fourth. Probably have to think about it. Thanks again!
As a pure singer Roy Orbison is unmatched. His voice drew at the heartstrings. His operatic timber was spine tingling. And his heart is on display in every word he wrote and sang. Heart, but not soul. And when I use the word soul, I mean as in soulful. And I believe that was the difference between him and Elvis. And why his brilliant catalogue has a more limited (but still huge) audience, for the long term. I saw Roy perform at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga California only a few months before his passing. The greatest voice I ever heard live. And at 61, I've seen a lot. Best wishes, RNB
You are 100% correct dXX. Their can be no Mt. Rushmore without Roy Orbison. So my Mt. R is going to have 5 legends. I would include Freddie Mercury, but he belongs on the UK version of Mt. R. Who would you choose for the UK Mt. R ? Adieu, RNB
The UK mount Rushmore? Wow, I haven’t thought about that one, but Freddie obviously has to be out there where George Washington is on the original mount Rushmore. Freddie is number one. Number two, for me, would be David Gilmour. There is just something about his voice that reaches in and grabs me. I think number three would be Robert Plant. It is not a great voice, but it is so extraordinarily expressive. The fourth one might be Dolores O’Riordan. Her voice, my God, it gets me every time. How about you? I’m very curious to see what you will say.
Excellent picks dXX. My choices, Freddie Mercury, (and in no particular order) Robert Plant George Michael Bon Scott and Barry Gibb. I know the last 2 are considered Australian. But they were both born in the UK. My Glaswegian wife agrees with your choice of Miss O'Riordan. Have a great weekend, RNB
BTW, this was on the Andy Williams Show, a variety show that ran from 1962 to 1971. Obviously, this was a live performance and it's amazing HOW FANTASTIC this sounds 55 yers later. Tells you how good analog music sounds vs. digital!!??
My friend, great review. I’ve heard that when he was giving this performance, his parents were in the audience and he was nervous about that. And he STILL busted loose and gave an unbelievable performance. My wife and son saw the Righteous Brothers at the MGM Grand probably in the late 90’s, an Bobby admitted he had trouble with the high notes, but Bobby and Bill still gave an unforgettable performance live. I’ll never forget that.
This was taken from Andy Williams show. If this song had been released before Beatles came to America you would know Bobby Hatfield's name and asking Beatles who are they. Only Phil Spector got involved and tried to put Unchained Melody on side B of another single. He took credit for the album but it was The Righteous Brother Bill Melody who produced the album. Bobby laid down tracks went home then came back said he could do it better and he did. 65 here and I slow danced fell in and out of love as a teen listening as my older sisters who never got into the Beatles Mania played it over and over. It is a song that you wish the singer was right there singing directly to you. He had one of not only the greatest voices but pure romance coming through. His Gentleman looks only added to the package.
I have listened to this 100’s of times. It is my most liked song but I have never heard anyone technically pull it apart before. You did a great job and further in-trenched my love of it.
Pure blue eyed soul. Great stuff.

At the end he was so happy because it’s the first time his mother was in the audience.
Bobby Hatfield did this song live 1965 on the Andy Williams show. Glad you appreciate it for it was sheer perfection.
The best tenor of all time....I agree
This was our wedding song, I love this song. Great reaction.
Notice how he smiles and bites his lip? He knows at that moment he nailed that performance. It was absolutely perfect. God bless him for leaving this song to remember him by.
He did nail it. Bobby was the best of the pair
And the nicer one also.
He does have a 3 oct range. He covers 2 and a half in this song. But he can go, and control higher AND lower than this. God laid a great gift on this man. May he RIP.
Bobby was sick during this performance and still killed it. Dudes a legend in my book. Never missed a note
This was from an episode of The Andy Williams Show in 1965. Both he and Bill Medley appeared on the episode, but only Bobby did this number. Magnificent.
They all did Whatd I Say on that show which was great fun.
Bobby sempre me faz chorar com esta linda canção.
As Levon Helm once said "Don't it look easy when you know how?"
This is Bobby's song! He nailed it! No one can sing this song better than he does. I was lucky to be able to see him perform this in 1965 on the Andy Williams show. I was teenager at that time. Perfection!!!! RIP Bobby! ❤❤❤❤
Unbelievable performance, l love your reaction thank you so much…
Unbelievable indeed. Thank you, Paul
One of thee most beautiful voices. This song is so innocent and pure. Raw emotion that you rarely see in 2022!
He’s was like melted butter! Relaxed soft jaw, taking his time…. Perfection.
Yeah. I felt those goose bumps. Over and over again. He sung this on the Andy Williams show, live. In front of his momma. He had a cold.
I agree.
A master of his craft.
I have watched dozens of reactions to this song.
I liked yours the best.
We are about the same age and I feel exactly the same as you do on every point!
I believe this is the best all-time live performance of "Unchained Melody" or ANY song, for that matter!
Thx Bill! 😉
His voice is pure love potion.
Here's a great description of his abilities and what he does in this particular song.

@@WilliamsDad1989 - yes, Phil has a great channel too...I enjoy his very informative videos.
I read that he had a 4 octave range but cannot find the source now. Another reference shows b2 - e flat 6. I don't know what that means though.
@@selene7726 It means he had a 3 and a half octave range😊
All the more remarkable when you note his visible nervousness at some points. I think his mother was in the audience. This song and his performance puts the ladies in a trance.
This performance was one of the very first things I watched on YT back in 2006 plus or minus a year. It is the song of a prisoner to his wife and written for the 1955 film "Unchained".
You need to check out the other two performances on the Andy Williams show that night. One is hilarious!
I am 74 yrs and will never forget when the Righteous Brothers came out. My ex husband has passed away. We both loved these guys when they came out in 1964. Rip Bobby! We miss you! 💖
Top reaction to a phenomenal vocal. The vocal of all vocals. Past - present and any future artist ! Only a human form reincarnation of Bobby maybe.!!!!!!
Thanks for your honesty regarding how Bobby even affects the men!!! How he has uplifted not just men & women but now GENERATIONS of all people!!!! He STILL is giving us all his love & we ALL are returning it!! I just wish Bibby could see this!!! But someday Bobby!!! Oh we love you!! And he is soooooo smooth & he makes it look easy but it's not!! Sing on Bobby Sing on!!! ❤️🌹❤️🌹🥰😍💐💐💐💐🌹❤️🥰😍😍🌹❤️🌹❤️
In a couple of videos you can see him (just have to look past Bobby 😁)
ua-cam.com/video/n2R_tKIlR2c/v-deo.html
@@rubydazzler Wouldn't be the same two guys singing it together 'cos it's about a guy hoping his girl is waiting for him when he gets out of prison!
@tanyaphillips4518 I wish Bobby could see it too. What a treasure he was and is!!!
I get goosebumps every time I hear this by the 25 yr. old Bobby Hatfield. He hits 24 notes in this song.
Thank you: a splendid analysis, I totally agree
I have loved him since I was buying the 45's
I have listened to this 100’s of times. It is my most liked song but I have never heard anyone technically pull it apart before. You did a great job and further in-trenched my love of it.
