Interruption is often a necessary aspect of interviewing. It makes the conversation more efficient. People tend to wander.

Babcock is a douche who should never be in hockey again, but the title of this isn't what the story is about. Unless Mike = drugs & Babcock = booze.

Yeah it’s a bit of a red herring because Ian seems to have done it to himself. He was a good serviceable d in Toronto but I never knew his background. Tough luck I guess but having played 500+ games in the big show is a pretty good achievement.

@streetdog75 Babcock is a very successful coach. Just because you don't like him will never change that. Any story I have heard about him is coming from soft players who Babs was trying to instill a backbone in. You need a backbone to succeed in the playoffs.

This story is clearly mistitled. I know M. Babcock had some major issue's of poor treatment of players, but nothing so far shows "maliciousness". Alcoholism is a disease. He clearly had substance abuse issues. I find it almost disturbing that he implies alcohol helped his game. I'm glad he is telling his cautionary tale which might help others. I have mixed feelings. Part of me feels sorry for him, part of me is disgusted he pissed away a career so many can only dream of.

Alcoholics sometimes reach a place where they perform better drunk than they do sober. Because when you’re sober (and you haven’t adjusted to a sober existence) you’re just brimming with anxiety. You can’t get into a focused headspace. Alcohol can soothe that.

    • @SweetLou15
      @SweetLou15 2 місяці тому +1

@@jon8004 I find it hard to believe too many Doctors, physio's or sports trainers would agree with you that ANYONE in professional sports would perform BETTER when drunk than sober. Anxiety is not the same as being inebriated.

@@SweetLou15 You've misunderstood me (or I communicated poorly). The healthy, fully sober version of an athlete is going to perform better than the drunk version. But if that athlete is an alcoholic, the transitional phase of sobriety can be deeply disruptive and painful, creating so much anxiety that they'll actually perform better with alcohol in their system because they're more regulated in that state. Also, sometimes alcoholism can be a crude form of self-medication for undiagnosed problems or disorders that need real medical treatment. Alcohol can calm those things, and when a player like that stops drinking, their real clinical problems bubble to the surface. It's complicated. But all things being equal, you're right.

I have watched several of these now and while I applaud Ian White for telling his story, I think he has a long way to go. He talks about getting in at 4 or 5 am and missing practice… but he was sitting on the bed ready to go…. Or he took a bunch of sleeping pills after a night of drinking and missed practice again and it was because you aren’t supposed to do that …. The show where he is talking about his firearms… I am a firearm owner in Canada as well … the part where he said he had all of them in a safe “ except maybe 3 “ is along the same lines where it’s not his fault and he was 7/10 compliant. That’s not how real life works. After listening to these I am thinking how talented he really must have been to play in the NHL and be hungover 24/7. I also think about how much teams looked the other way as it would be impossible not to know all of this stuff. Just sad but he is at least headed in the right direction….

Let's break this whole story down:
    - Signs in Detroit after the Sharks cut him loose when he had no other contract offers in the NHL
    - Babcock gives him a golden opportunity by playing him paired with Lidstrom, one of the best blueliners in the game
    - admits to a history of "shooting himself in the foot" and that he likes to party (more on that later)
    - Abundance of D-men, admits that he was 4th or 5th in the defense depth chart - they had a team meeting where they were
clearly told the defense pairing would be rotated... from his reputation - my guess is his attitude wasn't they best when
learning he wasn't paired with Lidstrom every game going forward (speculation based on what I heard about his days in
Toronto)... but Babcock was "sticking it to me" when no longer paired with Lidstrom
    - "Shoots himself in the foot" by flippantly calling Gary Betteman an idiot during labor stoppage
    - Has the audacity and entitlement to ask competing reporters to drop the hot story of the day - a hint of what he was like in
the dressing room - the partiers liked him, the more professional players - not so much
    - Called in for a meeting with the GM (Holland) about his stupid comments - not on teams good books at that point
    - 3rd game of season, pinches when he shouldn't have, panics and plows into his own goalie and gets hurt
    - along with his drinking (admits he's an alcoholic) and other drug habits, develops an addiction to fentanyl
    - When he was ready to play after injury he admits he was not in a good headspace
    - Babcock 100% sees this, scratches him a few games and White responds by drinking and using drugs more
    - Can't wake up from his fentanyl use from the night before and misses practice - admits he's never seen another player miss a
practice or even be late for practice
    - In Calgary - parties night before game and is up to 4 - 6 am... takes sleeping pills - missed practice AGAIN - Trainers call hotel
security for a wellness check - security can't wake him up
    - No contract offers from any NHL team that summer
    - admits to being an alcoholic since he was 16 or 17 years old - admits that there was always some sort of chemical in his
body whether is be marijuana, alcohol or harder drugs.
*_...but the way his career ended is Mike Babcock's fault_*
Listen to this and tell me exactly how any of this is on Babcock.
Some people can never admit fault and always need someone else to blame.
I don't buy Mike Commodore's story or Mitch Marner's story on their own either - both stories are missing a whole bunch of context. Same goes for what happened in Columbus. The veterans had no problem with the picture sharing plan and even defended Babcock - the entitled snowflake zoomers (same with Marner) were "offended".

Professional Sports recruit young kids to play for them and throw crazy amounts of money at them and then just expect them to act like an adult . The fact is they are kids and all of a sudden they're millionaires and still in the mindset they were in when they were 16 . Maybe teams have someone that helps guide them I don't know but if not they should maybe even provide chaperones . See how many guys are still able to make it all the way through college after they start getting millions to play there .

I didn’t even remember Ian played for Detroit, and I’m glad I didn’t. Babcock is a cancer and I was glad to see him leave (wasn’t happy he was even brought in) Detroit and see how he eventually got what he deserved. But Ian is deflecting blame on Babs because he’s unwilling to accept responsibility for destroying his career. He’s a pathological liar, which comes with being an addict, and was never prescribed fentanyl for a skate laceration. It would be hard pressed to see Oxy even prescribed for that. Just a terrible story and listening to him drone on about how everyone else caused his problems is typical of most self inflicted addicts.

That's not true. Mind you I am in Canada but I discovered reading the notes months after my heart surgery that I was given fentanyl for the pain. I had no idea.

Alcohol and drugs were far more important to this guy than his career from the get go. He just wasn't a very bright guy is what it comes down to.
