Tom is my favorite Doctor now after seeing all the Doctor's thru various episodes or tons of long clips or both. Man was a genius at being the most believable and natural feeling actor in that role. Also brilliant actor with a great wit, charm and sense of humor.
The thing about fans of the show is that this is a show that is ever-changing, ever-evolving, ever-adapting... It's not one shade, but multi-spectrum and thematically-enhanced. All aspects of it feed into one great tale from which many good things may come. Now, there is no question that Tom Baker must be the epitome of what it means to be Doctor, but we are all more than the sum of our parts, though we draw upon them continuously. All doctors are THE Doctor, and must be acknowledged so.

It's a bit hard to make out in this video, but the author of the book the Doctor reads at 3:30 is Oolon Colluphid, better known as the author of "Well That About Wraps It Up For God" from the Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy. Not surprisingly, Douglas Adams was the script-writer for this episode!

It's not Tom's fault or any Doctors fault if you have bad writers or producers or directors. Tom Baker himself was always worth watching and gave a 110% no matter how great or bad the scripts were. Tom had the guts to to speak up when the scripts weren't up to par and was forced out because he just couldn't take it any more. That being said he had some damn fine episodes all the way to the end. Tom also had the best quality and most classic episodes according to fans and critics alike. I like and respect all the actors who have played the role but watching Tom Baker makes me feel like I am watching perfection personified in the role.
He was forced out because JNT couldn't tolerate (the feeling was mutual) him and wanted to take the show in a wholly different direction. Tom had done it for seven seasons and was up for some far more challenging rolls like his acting tour de force as the repressed priest in the original production of the life and loves of the she devil. Tom eventually returned to Dr. Who in the Big Finish audio productions, where its like no time has past. His many appearances on British news and talk shows are so funny that they should not be missed. We are blessed that many of them are on youtube..
