This game has a boring story, a terrible unresponsive combat system, lame af level design, shitty fan service, boring boss fights and shitty soundtracks and is easy overall thanks to those fucking annoying companions. this game is an abomination
Fantastic review. I liked how, although you made comparisons to Dark Souls, you judged the game based on its own merit. Crappy and static level design is kind of expected given how God Eater was like lol
"crappy and static level design" is the point of games like this and God Eater. Its meant to portray how dead the world you're in is, there's hardly any life. Its way different than a game like Souls, which is a fantasy-medieval-european world. There's almost no comparing them.
Kyle Ellis I was thinking the exact same thing. Fex describes the location designs as “lifeless” which is clearly intended for the core design of the world environment. Desolate and post apocalyptic. But the area designs are by no means bad. Tons of reused assets, sure but the maps are carefully aligned with details that conveys the story adequately. Appearances aside, the map traversal is amazing, most contain loops, shortcuts, contraptions, traps and hidden paths just like in Dark Souls. My one main issue is that some of the maps are just too short. Other than that, the maps are totally fine, they look okay and are fun to explore.
@@needlessnash Exactly. The world is desolate and barren, and almost nothing is left. It's also probably set in Japan, oh and it's also in modern day. It's sad that people think anything remotely resembling classic "few-button" combat is a Souls clone. Just wait, someday people will think modern Ys games are Souls-likes 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Code Vein is a through and through action JRPG. It is singleplayer/co-op without stupid PVP, it is again a JRPG therefore a story-driven game. Replayability is already there to get different endings or do NG+ on a higher difficulty. Or to just replay the story. The only thing like Souls is the basic controls of combat, and shortcuts. That's literally it. 😂 Not even "go through this area killing enemies/picking up items then fight the boss and rinse and repeat" can be considered part of Souls, because games like Ys/Devil May Cry did that shit first, with much better puzzles and platforming to boot. Fromsoft's games are great but they're not the best out there in the action RPG genre, and as much as people want to believe, aren't the games that revolutionized anything IN the action RPG genre, except for maybe a more expansive world, and lore that you have to want to dig for. And are in the end very basic and barebones aside from DS3 and Bloodborne, and if you add in Miracles or Sorceries. I myself have loved the SoulsBorne series, but Sekiro smashes them all in quality, and tbh, making "Souls-like" a fake genre is dumb. Thanks for understanding and having some sense lol
@@zerosolis6664 I'm a big fan of abandoned locations irl, and they are anything but bland. There is a lot of interesting randomness and oddly beautiful scenes where dilapedation and the elements have turned something as mundane as an shop front into almost a work of art. If CV decides to progress the series I truly hope they spend more time on level design and environmental ambience. I really lile thos game but I think its missing a heartbeat in a way. Even the depths/dungeons are just aesthetically mediocre. Imo they got it close to great with locations like the Cathedral and the Provisional Government Center, but everything else was a bit... meh.
I strongly agree with this review on almost everything, just not completely on the visuals and level design. While Code Vein does have repetitive designs and sloppy textures in places, its overall aesthetic and art design is wonderful. A good number of locations and moments in the game were breath-taking, and very memorable. I also, on a second playthrough, realized how intricately woven within themselves a lot of the levels are (Provisional Gov. Center, Cathedral of Sacred Blood, Howling Pit, for example). Exploring them feels like genuine exploration and a test of endurance. It's fun. Great review! :)
So to me the most important question is Code Vein or Surge 2?? I’ll get both eventually but with Shadowkeep releasing in a couple days I am holding off for now because I am still mopping up content in Borderlands 3. A whole summer with hardly any new games and now that fall is here I have too many to even know what to do with : /
i did not expect your final thoughts to be as positive as it was cause of your tone of voice haha but glad to hear. Will definitely check it out after I finish DS3 and Nioh
You my good sir have done a remarkable job being pretty in depth with your review. I'll have to put this game on my list to get when I have the time to play it.
This review in particular has me much more intrigued and interested in this game. I really like the aesthetics, but I was really worried that the story would be over-the-top anime with poor dialog and giant, flopping, tiddies for no reason. I'm glad to hear that you think the story in this one was substantial. It's relieved me enough to actually want to pick this game up early now. Thanks!
@@Fextralife Thanks for the clarification. I figured that the fan-service would be in there and I'd have to just deal with it. But I'm glad to know that the story isn't at least dull. Thanks again for the review. :)
This review was really helpful, in depth and assisted greatly in my choice of not getting it. I love souls-likes especially Nioh and Sekiro, but this one has a tone and additional things that don't appeal to me. I wish more reviews were like this one.
I love Fextralife for so many games I've played...like ESO and Elden Ring. But thats only when they are actually playing it at launch. The updates on the website always start falling off after a couple of months which is a little annoying. Still one of my favorite twitch streams when games launch though because of how in depth they get in to the games.
"it feels lifeless" uhhh I don't think you know this but once you finish every major map 100%,that map fills up npcs to which you can fill out the quests for, depending on how the quest is like, you can get queen tungesten for the hardest ones and those are like the titanite slabs from dark souls or blood rock from bloodborne
It IS lifeless. Those npc are NOT memorable, they're just some lame af quest givers for "collect this or kill that" quests. Pretty fucking pathetic and lifeless if you ask me.
@@zerosolis6664 dark souls' world is D E A D too and its still amazing looking and atmospheric, while Code veins areas are dead as well, yes, but also boring and look like they made them with some budget level editor in 1-2 hours and dont get me started on that wannabe anor londo level, its the worst area i've ever seen in a video game, EVER.
The music wasn’t memorable? You gotta be kidding me. That’s literally one of the best things about this game. You’re high lol My biggest gripe with this game is the way it runs on the base current gen consoles. It’s like the first dark souls on 360, the framerate is the most inconsistent thing lmao
I am post Elden Ring looking for a new souls game to play and thanks to you I've found it! From my understanding the game has had several quality of life updates too! Enjoying it so far! You should totally make a video "the souls game you may have missed!"
I hear alot of souls vets saying this game is boring because it's too easy. Is that true? Are there difficulty settings? Also it's like $20 bucks now on sale on steam
The development team for Code Vein was an in house team by Namco where some members (or the whole team) came from the God Eater team. This is completely developed by Namco and not the actual Souls team (Team Ninja if i'm right) who are not part of Namco (the Dark Souls was only published by Namco). That's why many aspects like art style, story, and music are closer to God Eater and why it doesn't feel entirely like a Dark Souls game's combat system. Can't wait to go walk over to gamestop and pick it up tomorrow.
Haha, same! And when I played it, well... maybe it is a dark souls-like at the core, but I honestly keep seeing more and more of GE in this as I play further.
Great review! You're the only person who even mentioned those dungeon-like activities in all the reviews I've read and watched, so kudos to you. Looks like I'm going to pick this up soon :)
It’s sad that Studio Shift has always been hit as a “knock off of better games” especially with the God Eater franchise because of its premise rather than its actual gameplay (speaking as a long time GE fan here, I prefer it to Monster Hunter). Hearing people complain about CV being a “Dark Souls knockoff” hurts me deeply. I know people who refuse to even look at this game because of that mentality. I’ve been looking forward to this game since it’s announcement, so I will be playing the hell out of it regardless of what the haters say. I’m also glad that Shift is getting recognition for some of their work. They need more love.
I love how Shift upgrade the Formulas....i think MH is the way better Hunting game in Mechanic and Enemy Numbers but the MH "Story" is jeahhhh....not worth Mentioning xD. This is why i also love God Eater good Hunting Game with a good Story ^^ With Code Vein its the Same. Love Soulsborne but dont like the kryptic Story behind it. I want a fast forward telling Story. With Code Vein i got a good Soulsborne Game with a direct telling Story.
I'd never thought the day would come where i'd agree to a review made by a videogame Journalist. But i think the review was really fair and on point. Thank you for being impartial and not bashing it for its anime style, which most reviewers do. I've been following this game since the day of the announcement and it's finally here. Also hear me out: God eater and Code vein lore will be connected. MARK MY WORDS.
I had always heard of Code Vein but just picked it up as it was free this month on playstation and the game is outstanding. Can't believe I waited this long to start playing!
Meanwhile IGN and Gamespot giving 6's and 7's, based on what I played in the Demo and as a huge souls lover i'm more inclined to believe your review over the mainstream game journos, keep up the good work dude.
From what I've played of it and seen so far, I really like Code Vein. Flawed, you can tell the team is more at home with God Eater than they are this, but still fun. I got more enjoyment out of Code Vein than I have with Dark Souls, that's for sure.
So you're sold on lifeless environments, mediocre gameplay, boring story and shitty level design? Boy, am i glad that i dont have your shitty taste in games.
Nice review Fextralife! A question for you - approximately how long does the game last? I'm assuming something along the lines of 20 hours for a first-time run through. Not including the hours of character customization of course. :-)
its most terribly designed area i've ever experienced in a souls like game. the devs were desperate to copy dark souls so hard and yet failed like the unimaginative losers they are. if you cant even copy something right, you should just stop doing it.
@jonny s i already played through this game and must say, i'm quite dissapointed with it. The skill are not balanced at all, some are broken and some are useless or even bugged. The combat feels like you doesnt touch the enemies but just hit the air. The character where one dimensional typical anime character, the story was predictable, the ares monotone and outright boring especially the depths and the devs delayed the release multiple times amd we get THAT? Never. Again.
Hey Fextra - would you say the repeated environment aspects are on par with Chalice Dungeons - where I definitely recognized a lot of the parts and rooms after a while, but it didn't ruin it? Or is it monotonous and painfully repetitive?
Well once I heard Rock Paper Shotgun only wanted to talk about being offended by anime tiddies and "archaic sexism" regarding this game in their review, I figured it was worth checking out, so here I am. Looks like I'll be picking this one up.

I'm a big fan of abandoned locations irl, and they are anything but bland.
Imo they got it close to great with locations like the Cathedral and the Provisional Government Center, but everything else was a bit... meh.
2023 here , played thus game in the COVID era , most underrated souls like , surpasses even the likes of nioh
7.5 for the audio?
I actually liked the audio. The Oprah singing with the violin reminds me so much of High School DXD
This is the second video i watch for a review so i can make up my mind on buying the game, played the demo but had doubts, thanks for this my dude!
Fantastic review. Actually helped me understand if I would like the game or not.
So to me the most important question is Code Vein or Surge 2??
I’ll get both eventually but with Shadowkeep releasing in a couple days I am holding off for now because I am still mopping up content in Borderlands 3.
A whole summer with hardly any new games and now that fall is here I have too many to even know what to do with : /
awesome review! it made my purchase feel much more satisfying! You have earned a sub! Cheers
Here I am 5 years later watching this review waiting for it to download. Kinda excited now
Finally a good review that talks about everything including the character creator.
i did not expect your final thoughts to be as positive as it was cause of your tone of voice haha but glad to hear. Will definitely check it out after I finish DS3 and Nioh
Fantastic review way better than IGNs only have one issue and from what I played it seems too easy does it get harder later on?
Disable the AI companion then
They did say it was a easy dark souls
Bosses are harder then the mobs. Especially some later bosses
Yeah. Kinda.
Just found this game at a local gamestop for 11 dollars. Never heard of it before today. Such a hidden gem and I’m glad I picked it up
I'm Suprised How Good It Is
Nice review I definitely want this game, but why is nobody mentioning the amazing character creator? It's important to some of us.
You my good sir have done a remarkable job being pretty in depth with your review. I'll have to put this game on my list to get when I have the time to play it.
As a Souls-like lover, I'm currently busy with The Surge 2 however I cant wait to turn to this one afterwards!
The surge 1 and 2 where awsome ! I recommemd trying Ashen. Its a souls like game on xbox and pc and I also enjoyed it
@Fyrestone, code vein is shit.
@@foulXD no its not
@jonny s you must suck at it
@@foulXD Code Vein isn't a shit game. The Last Of Us Part II is a shit game.
Thanks!
There’s def a lot of tiddies. If you ignore the outfits the story has a great flow
@@Fextralife Thanks for the clarification. I figured that the fan-service would be in there and I'd have to just deal with it. But I'm glad to know that the story isn't at least dull. Thanks again for the review. :)
gayer as fuck
This review was really helpful, in depth and assisted greatly in my choice of not getting it.
I love souls-likes especially Nioh and Sekiro, but this one has a tone and additional things that don't appeal to me.
I wish more reviews were like this one.
Is the song at the end an ost form code vein? Sounds awesome reminds me a slightly bit to black butler
I bought this game a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it.
This game is $9 on PS5 right now if anybody is thinking of getting it.
I bought it this morning & am gonna try it out after work later
So... This game is Anime Bloodborne?
I love Fextralife for so many games I've played...like ESO and Elden Ring. But thats only when they are actually playing it at launch. The updates on the website always start falling off after a couple of months which is a little annoying. Still one of my favorite twitch streams when games launch though because of how in depth they get in to the games.
Played the demo then went to order the collectors edition straight afterwards. Great review.
Nice to know at least one review cared enough to give this game actual respect 👍
If i bought this game New at WalMart on clearance for $10 so does my individual pricepoint for the game become 50-ish !?
"it feels lifeless" uhhh I don't think you know this but once you finish every major map 100%,that map fills up npcs to which you can fill out the quests for, depending on how the quest is like, you can get queen tungesten for the hardest ones and those are like the titanite slabs from dark souls or blood rock from bloodborne
It IS lifeless. Those npc are NOT memorable, they're just some lame af quest givers for "collect this or kill that" quests. Pretty fucking pathetic and lifeless if you ask me.
@@foulXD Read the room. Post-apocalyptic. Pretty much everyone else is d e a d. The world is dead, desolate. Come on people.
Well that’s all I needed to hear! Awesome review!
Thank you for review! I love your channel! Great content and awesome advise.
The demo was amazing, can't wait to pick it up tomorrow!
Thank you so much for this review, you showed so much and really delved into some of the intricacies.
The music wasn’t memorable? You gotta be kidding me. That’s literally one of the best things about this game. You’re high lol
My biggest gripe with this game is the way it runs on the base current gen consoles. It’s like the first dark souls on 360, the framerate is the most inconsistent thing lmao
Yeah it drops everytime you go to an area with a lot of enemies, but then stays consistent once you get there. I guess it's loading the area
Music was shit indeed tbh.
@Josiah Duff the music is pure shit, deal with it.

Absolutely blown away and instantly addicted
you should play dark souls, its the original which started this genre :)
Same, I just saw the character creation and somehow can beat a singel mob
@Fred Duwe Why not DS3
You deserve a like on this one. Great review man.

Also it's like $20 bucks now on sale on steam
its kinda funny, people kept comparing it with dark souls, but if im being honest, since day 1, it always looked more like god eater to me.
The core gameplay is almost similar to dark souls.
@@ifrit1937 dark souls was developed by fromsoftware, team ninja made nioh
Haha, same! And when I played it, well... maybe it is a dark souls-like at the core, but I honestly keep seeing more and more of GE in this as I play further.
Marcos Danilo, and that is NOT good.
Great review! You're the only person who even mentioned those dungeon-like activities in all the reviews I've read and watched, so kudos to you. Looks like I'm going to pick this up soon :)
Fantastic review! And remember, you can't spell ignorant without IGN!
This is why i also love God Eater good Hunting Game with a good Story ^^
With Code Vein its the Same. Love Soulsborne but dont like the kryptic Story behind it. I want a fast forward telling Story. With Code Vein i got a good Soulsborne Game with a direct telling Story.
@@DantoriusD "good story"...lmao, ok buddy.
@@foulXD Stop hating on people because you're salty about dying.
They have been marked.
Only our score matters! :P
They are right I would give 7.5 at most.
Great review dude, september is a way too busy month, release wise, to pick this up as well, but i'll give it a chance for sure in a couple of months
From what I've played of it and seen so far, I really like Code Vein. Flawed, you can tell the team is more at home with God Eater than they are this, but still fun. I got more enjoyment out of Code Vein than I have with Dark Souls, that's for sure.
Before I saw the gameplay, I was hoping for a Bloodborne combat style, but like you said, it's God Eater + Dark Souls
Thank you for the great review. Was on the fence with this one. Getting it now!
Good to hear they toned down the "anime" aspects of the game. I love the anime art style but dread anime tropes. Guess ill be picking this up!
was realy on the edge with this one, but your review convinced me to give it a shot. thanks.
Those final thoughts are what had me sold, picking it up later today;

It's around 40 hours
I like the Andor Londo like area that is show in this review.
its most terribly designed area i've ever experienced in a souls like game. the devs were desperate to copy dark souls so hard and yet failed like the unimaginative losers they are. if you cant even copy something right, you should just stop doing it.
@@foulXD i agree too, this area was just terrible. It was a nightmare to navigate.
@jonny s ehm the minimap is literally useless in this shithole.
Never. Again.
@jonny s wow, why so triggered? Cant handle other opinions?
Hey Fextra - would you say the repeated environment aspects are on par with Chalice Dungeons - where I definitely recognized a lot of the parts and rooms after a while, but it didn't ruin it? Or is it monotonous and painfully repetitive?
Oh look an actual good review thanks for that .
Well once I heard Rock Paper Shotgun only wanted to talk about being offended by anime tiddies and "archaic sexism" regarding this game in their review, I figured it was worth checking out, so here I am. Looks like I'll be picking this one up.
I think the areas are pleasant to look at...Maybe because I am a fan of dystopian/post-apocalyptic worlds ^w^"
Good review anyway.
jonny s Yeah, I got the game on my birthday by my brother ~ I have spent almost 70 hours on it now.
