There is SO MUCH gear set up… Event people often have NO IDEA how much money you have in that whole rig. To the audience “it sounds good” but when you hit them with the bill, often they are surprised… not everyone, but a lot of events can’t understand how much all that costs. But if they cheap out, they sure as heck know it “sounds like Sh@!#” - it’s awesome that you put out such a great product!
Wow...thank you! It's not always easy to know where you should be investing in. What is interesting about the industry is how much investment there is in new gear and the need to keep buying it. Whereas in other industries, the companies maximize the life of their capital investments. We would like to think we aren't sucked up in that cycle and we take good care of what we got.
Thank you for supporting the cause.
You're welcome...we were happy to be a part of it!
3:54 I have that very same cart. For someone with low back problems and now in recovery from hip replacement surgery, it is and has been a huge benefit when schlepping gear around! 😊
Agreed! Hard to imagine not having one. Also takes the pressure off of seeing if a venue has one to use, and then trying to find it at the end of the night!
@@thesoundcouple EXACTLY!!
Fund raiser gigs are as much about helping the organisation as it is about paying it forward. Huge effort from you both, well done!
Thanks!
Love you guys, Pre-rig your 3 box array in a rolling stack with bumper already on top. A paired 100' XLR & Edison to signal/power each stack. Roll stack under L25 pick and send it. Saves about 30 mins on the in and out. Stack rolls on trailer. L25's are just a pain no short cut. One time pay for every show save. Hope this helps get ya out quicker!
Thanks for the tip! We would definitely be looking into ways to make this go more quickly....we're still learning!
@@thesoundcouple we all are still learning 30 years of pushing gear and accidentally making noise/listening to the music between the pushes. A true cable rolling moving company that makes music. It doesn't pay more if you work harder. I was A2/monitor eng/systems tech with a US theater tour, 24 wireless and 16 IEM. Shure/Sennheiser IEM's as foreign artist prefer them, 3 routers. one for work bench, one for array management (Meyer Leopards) and one for monitor console (QL5) as these locations changed, faster to have 3 routers than cat6 run to each. 9 mixes to band/actors. Trust me the carts are the way to go. Look at Meyer Leopard or Lyon carts. Same concept. Have a front lip for the box to land/rest against and the make the cart angle the natural resting angle of bottom box when flown. Pin boxes to cart for transport. Will make it easy to rig. You guys are working your ass off. Love the positive attitude. Its a labor of love as there are very few rich audio guys.
I always enjoy your videos and I notice how accommodating you both are to venue demands and other persons involved. I focused on your comment about it being a two person effort. I’m a retired school teacher and sound and lights have always been my sideline passion. For years I had the benefit of hiring select students for the help I needed for some gigs but for the most part I lost that connection once retired and ran solo until I scaled down operations (if I couldn’t carry it by myself it was gone). I’m also very well aware of your investments and especially regarding the transition from analog to digital. Anyway, I digress…thank you both for putting yourselves out there and know how much your videos are appreciated.
Thank you for sharing your experience and comment....that really helps us to stay motivated!
Great job.....It is not always about money. Such a positive attitude.by all.
Thanks! We were there did what we needed to do!
Great video and after 2-4 day show I got very tired on the 2-3 day so I had to grab coffee to make it through the gig
Yes! The coffee is right there with us too!
41:49 - Animal is my favorite Muppet - "BEAT DRUMS! BEAT DRUMS!" AHHHH...[drumfill]
That show was awesome!
Another great video! I know how you feel doing these long events - I did two separate big setup production gigs back-to-back over two nights. I was shattered at the end of the last gig and had to take a short rest doing in load-out. Well done for getting the job done. These scope of these charity events always seem to snowball so I found they are always more work than you originally thought.
Yes...you just need to brush yourself off and get ready for the next one! With charity events, you can only hope for the best.
Great episode!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
You may have answered this already, but could you tell me about the lifts? They look awesome.

Another awesome video!
Curious what stands you're using for your up stage movers? That setup with the mover on top and battens on the sides looks really cool!! And you have an up light in there as well?
You're giving me more ideas, which means I'll want to go buy more equipment!! THANKS!!! LOL!
Glad we could help! I am shocked that they have gone down in price since we bought them! www.pssl.com/products/global-truss-glow-totem-1-5-4-92ft-f31-tube-set?
Stacy mounted the Stormchasers vertically which does look good and we have a couple Blizzard par lights for uplighting. Stacy covers some of it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/z07im6f2xrY/v-deo.html
I have the e835 WL and I changed it to the SE V7 capsule and it was night and day. No more harshness och much better body to the vocal. Highly recommend.
Good to know that there are other options. In this case, this is the gear the band chose to use, so we need to work with it. To be fair, and not come across simply as a basher, we used wired 835's on a different band recently, and they worked good for them. So our conclusion is that it's a good mic for some and perhaps the wireless versions don't sound as good?
@@thesoundcouple I actually have both the wired and WL version of it and it shares the same character. It does sound great on certain singers, but overall the V7 is a better sounding microphone to my ears with much better off-axis rejection. Thanks for yet another interesting video!
Sound clear
Thanks!
Thanks for the great video. Which crank stands are you using? How high do they go? How is safety with them - do you need certifications for certain events/halls? Where can we buy them from?
They are from Fantek. We updated the video description with all of the links. You can also check out this video where we debuted them and discussed them in a bit more detail: ua-cam.com/video/24ePKcXI30g/v-deo.html
Wow! What a unique gig! And, what a unique venue! The challenges of this unusual combination really teemed with learning opportunities for those of us who depend on the experiences of The Sound Couple to enhance our own production expertise.
I was amazed at the amount of equipment it took to cover all the bases at this fund-raising event. The van seemed packed full and the trailer equally so. As usual, Bart and Stacy showed us a number of key learning points during the load-in and set-up. The use of the new Fabric Sign Guys’ “Crowd Control Barriers” does a really good job at protecting the Fantek speaker lifts and keeping those attending the event from tripping over the stabilizing legs.
It was a very long two days of production for The Sound Couple. But, as observers and learners, it was a great gig for those of us intent on learning from Bart’s and Stacy’s experience. Thanks to The Sound Couple for allowing us to tag along.
You're welcome Dean - it was a long video to get through, but there was a lot to cover. As always, thank you for your insights!
Really enjoyed this, and very hard work for sure! On your iPad at about 38:56 and when you were backstage in the storage area at 40:47it seemed like your gain structure was pretty low on all the channels. Doesn't PreSonus recommend a higher gain setting, perhaps occasionally hitting the first yellow bar for the best signal to noise ratio? Or are PreSonus consoles different in that regard?
Not sure what PreSonus recommends....but you are opening up the gain structure can of worms :) I like to run my faders close to unity and adjust the preamps accordingly....that's how I was taught, and not going to change!
HI again, what are you guysbusing for you light tree here where you have one tree atop another?
We show more detail on our new back lighting configuration in this video: ua-cam.com/video/gBI3ACGmmiw/v-deo.html. The stands are Telelock stands by Ultimate support and we use a 16" speaker pole inserted in the top to stack them.
Hey SC, great video as usual. Wha’s the spec for the speaker lift please?
They are from Fantek. We updated the video description with all of the links. You can also check out this video where we debuted them and discussed them in a bit more detail: ua-cam.com/video/24ePKcXI30g/v-deo.html
37:42 A eurovision song???
As a eurovision fan i was over the moon when i heard jt
You have a great ear!
@@thesoundcouple Do you guys watch the show at all?
Sorry, have not seen it!@@captainsoot
I did a 12 hour event. Was up for 25 hours as a result! Never again!
$$ can counter the wounds that some gigs can cause, but yeah, when you feel beat up afterwards in every way...that's not good.
Hi guys, I have an issue! We have a Christmas gig soon, and I will be doing the tech side. We have 2 people helping doing the sound, but still need to teach them. We need to connect the guitar amps to the PA. We have a XLR Snake but we have 2 options for FOH Placing. In The main control room where the lighting controller is but that is in the side of the hall wall, or we can use another mixer we have (Allen And Heath ZED 16) and place to the side of the stage and we can use a long DMX cable to connect from the control room to floor. The Speakers are on the ceiling and we have stage monitors. The help would be brilliant! Thanks!
Our recommendation would be to mix side of stage. Very difficult to mix live sound when you are not in the room.
How were the subwoofers responding in that room as L&R array?? Might image there was a lot of phasing issues esp with that wall behind them😩
I didn't sense any issues, but we weren't pushing it hard either. The coverage through out the room was good all over.
Sound Good Smooht
Thanks!
Can you share a little insight on how you're ducking the music when the mic is spoken into?
Sure! The channel that was playing the music had the "Key Listen" function enabled with the Key Source set to the channel with the mic. Set the compressor to the amount that you want it to compress when the mic channel is used. I was playing with the compressor to adjust how much to compress in that segment.
Hi guys! I don't do too many shows with drums but I noticed when I do there is a bit of a delay from the drums to the PA. Do you ever feel the need to delay on the mixer and any advice on that? Also any tips for using iPads outside in the sun? Thanks for all you do. love the channel! Kevin
We don't concern ourselves with any delay from stage. In theory, you have a good point, but there are frankly higher priorities. As far as iPads in the sun, UC Surface does have a "light" setting to brighten up the app. Besides that, we believe you just need to be prepared for the battle:
1. Be prepared and do as little config/setup in the sun.
2. Keep your device charged.
3. Know the app you are using.
Taking care of the few things above will make your day go much smoother. Nothing worse than trying to troubleshoot issues when you fighting the sun.
@@thesoundcouple awesome thank you! I just ordered an xr18 iPad mixer for small outdoor gigs. I was sick of running snakes and power in weird spots. I’m nervous about running things off an iPad but hopefully it works out just fine. Also my wife gets a kick out of it when she sees we watching your channel. “You’re just watching people set up sound stuff?” Lol
Wireless Workbench 7 - thanks for showing your use case. We've also converted from scanning on the IEM packs and mics to doing a WWB7 scan and then getting s/w to the analyze and assign channels. We had 8 pieces PSM300 in G20 and realized by using WWB7 that in Toronto UHF TV channels 17,18,19,20 are all full so we sold this gear with full disclosure to a guy in Philly where those freqs are available. We like how WWB7 networks with SLXD but find the PSM900 and PSM1000 very expensive. We are considering Audio-Technica ATW-3255 IEMs as they have widest UHF frequency bandwidth and are about same price as PSM300. ATW-3255 have their own networking and management software app - I am very loyal to shure but am very disappointed with PSM300 experience with limited bandwidth and no networking and real-time management.
Our experience, as you will see in future videos, is that if you have multiple PSM300's, you really need to consider the combiner/paddle...which is a small investment itself. They are working out for us now, but if we were to do it again, we would probably look past them and move up. WWB has also contributed much to our success.
I'm on the same boat with multiple PSM300 in J13 range. How is ATW-3255? Any drop out or hiss noise?
Thanks for quick reply - should have mentioned we invested in two 4 unit antenna combiners and paddles before going deeper with wwb7 and they did not make any real improvement to the rf dropouts - we just didn’t have clear uhf RF space in g20 in our area
Can you give us a link for the source for your new barriers please.
We updated the description with pertinent links. The crowd barrier signs we purchased here:

More supporting boooos for Sennheiser E series vocal mics!
LOL! Yes, you just cannot unhear this...sorry!
If the band would play music with a fast beat then the riders can pedal to the beat.
That was the intent with their music choices! Fortunately the band was for the after party!
I lol'd at the 835 face :) I agree, not my favorite mic.
Even though we are recording our videos on an iPhone (which do a very good job with audio), we were really able to capture our thoughts in action!
🤍🤍👍🏻✅
For Spin Cycle what about Female Vocal Trance which should go down well with the audience just an Idea if you can get the copyrite to use the tracks.
Our big issue is using the music the bands are covering that assist with the enrichment of our content. To be completely honest, it's really jeopardizing the future of our channel. As the restrictions get more refined and stricter, it's getting more difficult for us to provide the content in the style we want. Right now, we understand we need to pivot and figure out another approach...we are still figuring out what this means. We have resorted to uploading pieces to check to see if it gets' struck...and sometimes it's not consistent, so we will have an entire video ready, and then we get hit....this is really hard to deal with when countless hours have been put into a video.
@@thesoundcouple There is only one way to go that is to move to Linus Sebastian's Float-Plane or something else which is unfortunate and is a similar problem that a guy who offers a service to farmers who has to set up his own servers and allow people to log into his server.
@@DAVIDGREGORYKERR Hopefully, there will be a better way that will support the masses....kind of what you are alluding to is that we need a viable alternative to UA-cam. We have discovered that the revenue sharing option in UA-cam is pretty much a joke. We are not in it for the money, but the current system is not equitable....the contributors receives a small fraction of the total revenue. The direction we are probably going is to probably post less content and make sure what we do post maximizes our value to the viewers.
Great Sound and too much work
Yes....this was a lot of work for sure!
You are shooting yourself in the foot if you are not up charging for those prank stands. Yes, it’s nice to have the PA in the air, but if you can’t make your money back on the shows that needs PA in the air, that’s a tough ROI. PLUS, a lot more work.
100% agree...the difficult part of this purchase was the fact that we could not assure ourselves ROI. Every now again, there will be a higher risk purchase. In this case, we accepted that risk as it allows for a couple of things...it allows us to consider shows we have turned down in the past, and it helps keep your services in pace with others. This is analogous to years back when we would charge for wireless mics when wired mics still got the job done...now wireless mics are pretty much expected.
