I paid $100 for my Total Gym, which I bought from Craigslist.
The Total Gym is o.k., but anyone considering paying $2,599 for a Total Gym should reconsider their options.
For instance, I bought a Total Gym, a Marcy PM 4400 Leverage Home Gym, 300 pounds of Olympic weights, a Soloflex, and a Gravity Edge Home Gym from Craigslist for a total cost of $420.

I remember buying the xls years ago for 699 and I thought that was too high. It's been a great machine but almost 3000 grand? Never. I would like to get a leverage gym one day but space only allows for a total gym at the moment.

I was really excited when I saw the thumbnail, but this is disappointing to be honest.
So many other fitness companies are trying new things and offering more features as of the past few years but Total Gym is just BARELY improving their products and slapping a massive price tag on it that it definitely is not worth at retail value.
My used XLS has been fantastic and short of 100lbs weight capacity and the adjustable glide board, its essentially the same with just more increments (but not more resistance over all).
For that retail price you could get a much nicer functional trainer or a great rack and bar and plates, etc.
Well on one hand, my XLS is still great and I don't feel like I'm missing out on much here. But I am disappointed that they haven't developed better attatchements or better arms (I guess they saved all that for the commercial models like the GTS).
But either way, thanks for covering this Mike. And ofcourse if you get a chance to review it, I'd love to see it but definitely will understand passing on it when you've already covered all the other models including the top ones. I don't see it making a big difference but maybe there are differences not present on the site and pictures?

I think you hit that nail on the head when you consider some of these home fitness brands are literally revamping "2.0" products when the first model has barely been in production to further innovate and improve their products. I'm sure the machine will work great, but I think some of us were expecting just a few more new features.

Thanks for the quick preview Mike. The pros and cons for me are:
    Pros:
    - [ ] Glideboard can be horizontal/parallel to the floor, which is a big deal for people with back problems who want to do the torso twists.
    - [ ] The machine is sturdier than other home models.
    Cons:
    - [ ] Lack of innovation, for example, few built-in attachments; lack of electronics for measuring and recording exercises; lack of features to make it easily portable.
    - [ ] Lack of swivels which, as you’ve often pointed out, help extend cable life.
    - [ ] Lack of accessories included in the price, such as a Pilates bar, a weight bar, a curl bar.
    - [ ] Lack of a local place where people can try it and other TotalGym products before buying.
    - [ ] A very hefty price tag, which apparently isn’t related to the cost of making the product, as evidenced by the real discounts available a few times a year on QVC.

Definitely taking a lot of design cues from the gts. But it’s is very pricey for a home gym. At that price might as well aim for a GTS. If the rail height is not that much higher that means resistance isn’t as intense as commercial models

Pretty cool. But with out the adjustable pulleys I don’t think it is worth it. I’ve been using the Pilates attachment that is used to hook the pulley to the tower, to attach chains to it, to be able to change the angle of resistance, and it like triples the resistance. It’s a insane work out, pressing, rows, even shrugs are real intense

Thanks for the quick response. I totally agree with you that it looks like a bit of a disappointment. It doesn't look like it's worth spending basically twice the price of the FIT for the adjustable bench. It doesn't really offer much else. You get a few more level increments, a built-in leg pulley connector and slightly higher weight limit. My "wish list" items include adjustable cable lengths and more connection options to be able to change the angle of the pulleys. On a side note, on the website, they also replaced the Total Gym Supreme with the Apex G5. That's a great swap in my opinion. Also, I wouldn't bother dropping $2500 to review this thing. Now, if they were to send you one for free ...... :)

This appears to be exactly what you said: a blend of the TG Fit with the TG GTS. I have the TG FIT and it is a crackerjack machine. (I had an old Total Gym from 1999 for 20 years, which I let go when we moved across states. I wish now I had kept it.) I would get the GTS or the even higher level TG Encompass if I had the space and, more important, the money, but I can't justify spending that kind of money, (especially since the FIT will challenge me beyond my ever being able to outgrow it). Even the "discounted" price of $2,599.00 is more than I would probably spend. However, if I DIDN"T have any Total Gym, and if I could get the TG EVOLVE for even just a little less than $2,599.00, say about $2,000.00, I would certainly consider it. (I got the FIT on QVC last year for $699.00, with tons of accessories, a dream package). I think they are setting up three tiers of machines: the Total Gyms lower than the TG XLS for the bargain buyers, the XLS, FIT, and EVOLVE for those willing to pay more for heavier duty more premium machines, and the GTS and ENCOMPASS for people with plenty of money who want a maxed-out TG machine and are willing and easily able to pay for it. It makes sense to me. We'll see if the EVOLVE sells enough to be considered a success.

Thanks Robert. I love the passion in the comments about the product. I could see this price possible coming down as years pass. I personally thing they need to finally retire a bunch of models which might make a machine like this standout a little more.

For the back and legs I have had to add multiple bands underneath to continue to challenge me. I use weighted vests also. I found the weight bar awkward as it seems to be in the way. I still love my TG, in fact I have 2. I will not return to the gym. I have the Pinnacle a bare bones model. The machine is very sturdy, it will not wear out. But some creativity and ingenuity is needed to continue to challenge yourself, and that is where our friend Mike comes in. Love the channel.

Definitely great question. I always say overall the total gym for the money is great for the variety of upper body exercises and ways you can really stress those movements. It’s definitely not weak in the arms, back, shoulders, abs, and I’d say it’s pretty decent at chest, but not everyone feels the same way. Biggest lagging area is going to be in the legs. Even though you’re using bodyweight, the various ways you can manipulate leverage, and not only add external resistance, can easily ramp up the resistance.

While I love the total Gym, It's become a secondary machine for me. It was great to start with, but lacks in quite a few areas, legs namely. I'll always use the total Gym, but at that price range...it's a bit much considering it's basically just a sliding bench at the end of the day. The last TG I bought was the Xtreme for $400 with every single attachment, and that was more than sufficient. These higher-end models look cool, but other than having sturdier construction and a few inconsequential niceties, are basically just the same exact thing. When it comes down to it, the lower-end models do the trick just fine. All one needs to do is make sure to get a bench with 12 resistance levels and the holes for the weight bar. A lot of the higher-end models have only 10 levels or lack that bar. For me...a cheapie model paired with regular dumbbells and barbells is the far smarter option in terms of pricing and functionality. Working out and staying fit shouldn't have to come with a premium price. For instance, TG sells you charts and cards with the exercises that can be performed on it. Yup...sell. I mean....wtf? How about just telling me so that I may enjoy the product? Nope. lol That's why I go solo most days. A good anatomy book, a little knowledge, and a lack of bs tolerance has done me quite well. So, I def recommend the total gym...but not at a premium. Kinda like a car......do you get a pretty one with all the electronic doodads that breaks all the time just to be flashy, or do you get a beaten up whip(car) and not give a damn because it does the same? While the completely horizontal bench is cool, it's not necessary. simply lean back on the non horizontal model....and achieve the exact same effect. Actually, if you aren't lowering you shoulders and leaning slightly back while raising the chest, you aren't doing the chest press correctly anyway. lol So, I'll spend that $400 to $600 bucks initially for the weights and base model, and with the money I saved not buying this, I'll feel better at the end of the day because I didn't buy Christie Brinkley or Carlos Norris anything at all.

Tonal provides all of that with a near-zero footprint and without a monthly fee (after the first year). In my early 60s, in less than 20 months, I more than doubled my strength using Tonal, from an initial Strength Score of 320 to 792.
