    Perhaps my favorite solo by one of my favorite guitarists, the solo in "Time" by Pink Floyd is one the greatest examples of using a solo to create a song within a song, something David Gilmour is masterful at doing.
    It's incredible to listen to how the solo develops, never rushing to prove a point too fast but when it does it is breathtaking.
    To me David Gilmour practically invented the art of the huge soaring guitar solo. I mean listen to that tone! In the early seventies to boot!!
    Technically there isn't a lot of fast fretwork, but instead we have a TON of bends that require special attention to keep in tune. David Gilmour literally adds bends to his bends throughout the entire solo.
    In this Time guitar solo lesson I will take you note-for-note through this masterpiece and show you how to attack each difficulty one by one.
    With all of those bends the Time guitar solo is great to play a few times each day simply to keep your calluses up!
    Besides the bending difficulties I hope you use this solo to inspire you to create your own musical statements during your solos. You simply can't have a better model than this one. :)
    Carl..

      This guy gets it!! I'v been setting loops to go over parts of his Eruption solo. Which, by the way, is a PITA to get right. You can learn the riffs, but it's a whole other thing to get the timing down. Any way, it's "TIME" to learn this as David Gilmour is legit the best guitarist and this solo is the BEST solo of all time. I know people like to point to the solo in Uncomfortably Numb as it sits at #2 in the all time greatest solos, but for me, this solo, is by far, the #1 solo of all time.
      Thank you Carl Brown for all of the breakdowns that you so! They are the best!

    i actually think that many of gilmour's solos are easier than most other guitarists of his era. this is NOT a knock. as my friend the great (guitarist) steinar kristofferson said: "the great one's make it easy on themselves."

    • @charltonlwalker
      @charltonlwalker 6 років тому +38

      Agreed. This solo is about awesome bends and phrasing, not speed and complexity. This is one of my favorite solos of all time. So much soul.

    • @50Something
      @50Something 6 років тому +25

      Yeah but actually "feeling" the notes and bending each note to perfect pitch and allowing them to sustain and then slowly decay with that glorious fuzz is something only an artist can come up with. Gilmore is a guitar god

    • @superdriver777
      @superdriver777 5 років тому +11

      As they say, sometimes it isn't so much what you play as what you *don't* play! Technical difficulty is fine, but good musicianship is about stirring the listener's soul more than about impressing their mind.

    • @tomhawkins8855
      @tomhawkins8855 5 років тому +14

      The idea of the "the un-played note" is a valued concept in my view. I think of John Bonham and the brilliantly sparse percussion of Led Zepplin. Technical virtuosity was not an issue and phrasing was everything. Gilmore has sufficiently demonstrated his skill including a seamless tribute to Prince during a live show. I'm sure Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, and a host others have greater inventories of technical skills but can they reach every emotional nerve, for lack of a better word, in your soul?

    Loved this song, and especially this solo for probably 30 years or more. Dialing in the effects to get that mournful tone is a big part of it. Just started learning this lead this evening, since most times I've ever heard it I was too much in awe to believe I could make a guitar sound like this. Thanks for the lesson! I just have to keep at it. Using a Godin LG P90, Fender The Bends compressor, a Metal zone(no BS!) and MXR carbon copy (mod on) playing through a Deville 4x10. Huge fun!

    Next to a guitarist they call "King" (Jimmie S.), you sir have the best tone and intonation that I have found spanning the globe, well at least the net, especially this song, and I agree 100% with joeguitargod! Jimmie became blind at an early age. I heard him play back in the 90's at a concert and he nailed The Star Spangled Banner (Hendrix) along with Time by PF. I have looked for a lesson by Boston (Hitch a Ride) and have found zilch thus far. In your "spare time" will you PLEASE do a lesson on the above as I would be forever grateful. Thank you for all the great lessons, what a difference a year makes!

    If you actually listen closely to the end of the chorus before the solo, there’s an ascending pickup into first note that you are playing here.
    Edit: I think it’s played in the bass. But it would be rad if it was worked into the guitar

    very well done getting the tone so close dude. its a nice refreshing change to see someone who has actually made the effort and learned the piece they are trying to demonstrate. Its a sorry amount of so called tutorials that are actually being played correctly which frankly is a crime and a pathetic way to fish for compliments whilst misleading young enthusiastic beginners, ultimately making it way more hassle for them to then re-learn it and end their niggling frustration that makes them think they are never going to sound like their heroes, When I am king I will form the guitar C.I.A (Competent Instructor Association) and the guitar F.P.I (Fakers and Posers Inquisition) the latter taking inspiration from the famed Spanish Inquisition employing all the traditional , medieval methods of tort.....er i mean interrogation.
