Perhaps my favorite solo by one of my favorite guitarists, the solo in "Time" by Pink Floyd is one the greatest examples of using a solo to create a song within a song, something David Gilmour is masterful at doing.
It's incredible to listen to how the solo develops, never rushing to prove a point too fast but when it does it is breathtaking.
To me David Gilmour practically invented the art of the huge soaring guitar solo. I mean listen to that tone! In the early seventies to boot!!
Technically there isn't a lot of fast fretwork, but instead we have a TON of bends that require special attention to keep in tune. David Gilmour literally adds bends to his bends throughout the entire solo.
In this Time guitar solo lesson I will take you note-for-note through this masterpiece and show you how to attack each difficulty one by one.
With all of those bends the Time guitar solo is great to play a few times each day simply to keep your calluses up!
Besides the bending difficulties I hope you use this solo to inspire you to create your own musical statements during your solos. You simply can't have a better model than this one. :)
Carl..

This guy gets it!! I'v been setting loops to go over parts of his Eruption solo. Which, by the way, is a PITA to get right. You can learn the riffs, but it's a whole other thing to get the timing down. Any way, it's "TIME" to learn this as David Gilmour is legit the best guitarist and this solo is the BEST solo of all time. I know people like to point to the solo in Uncomfortably Numb as it sits at #2 in the all time greatest solos, but for me, this solo, is by far, the #1 solo of all time.
Thank you Carl Brown for all of the breakdowns that you so! They are the best!

Just leaving a note for myself. Thanks, man

the 9th lick is the best sound a guitar has ever made.
Clutch
I learned this in one hour sitting from your tutorial, the tabs on the various sites are so confusing. thismade it no problem
Exactly what I came to the comments to type. Top quality teaching
i like the fact that you dont escape the pain in this solo ether it hurts in the soul or your fingers tips
i just put on some .11 strings. lets start that journey of bleeding finger tips
Good point! It’s both for me haha
At this point my fingers feel numb
I was thinking on trying on acoustic.....
@@dhyanamtalukdar6111 haha good luck bro
The guitar solo in this song digs deeply into my emotion and feeling whenever I listen to it. Great teaching Carl.
also digs deep in your fingertips when you play it
I grew up listening to Pink Floyd. To me, this solo was THE sound of a guitar. I remember listening to it in awe as a kid. To be able to actually play it is almost surreal. Thank you so much.
You teaching this song has improved the quality of my life. Sincerely thank you.
my favorite solo of all TIME 😅👈✋
Hallelujah
Bdum t'GTFO
My too
Abso-fucking-lutely note-for-note perfect!!! And the exact tone and all the subtle nuances and inflections really make it scary damn good! I am not worthy!
Great now my fingertips are shredded
Josh Arthurs how do u think david gilmour feels hahaa
Rich
Josh Arthurs i think davids fingertips are built up with 1inch of dead skin
But wasnt it worth it?
Sore fingers tells you you've not played enough. Also tells you that you're making progress, so keep it up.
i actually think that many of gilmour's solos are easier than most other guitarists of his era. this is NOT a knock. as my friend the great (guitarist) steinar kristofferson said: "the great one's make it easy on themselves."
Agreed. This solo is about awesome bends and phrasing, not speed and complexity. This is one of my favorite solos of all time. So much soul.
Yeah but actually "feeling" the notes and bending each note to perfect pitch and allowing them to sustain and then slowly decay with that glorious fuzz is something only an artist can come up with. Gilmore is a guitar god
As they say, sometimes it isn't so much what you play as what you *don't* play! Technical difficulty is fine, but good musicianship is about stirring the listener's soul more than about impressing their mind.
The idea of the "the un-played note" is a valued concept in my view. I think of John Bonham and the brilliantly sparse percussion of Led Zepplin. Technical virtuosity was not an issue and phrasing was everything. Gilmore has sufficiently demonstrated his skill including a seamless tribute to Prince during a live show. I'm sure Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, and a host others have greater inventories of technical skills but can they reach every emotional nerve, for lack of a better word, in your soul?
superdriver777 bingo....what Isn't played..that's where greatness lies
Click here for the tutorial to the rest of the song. :) ua-cam.com/video/KUMBFoSc9YM/v-deo.html
These solos encompass everything I love about David Gilmour's playing. Touch Tone & Taste
I've been thinking a lot about the "Time Solo" lately. I'm a big fan of Pink Floyd. Time is my all-time favorite electric guitar solo. It is spiritual and speaks to my soul.
i cried
You can !
That’s Gilmour for ya
I just want to say thank you so much for this, I dabbled in my youth and got nowhere, I just turned 60 and now with new tech and this tutorial, I can finally realise my dream to play this kind of stuff, you have a great way to explain and very easy to follow style. Many thanks :)
Your awesome carl!!! Best teacher ever. You make it so simple and I like how you repeat the phrases after being taught. I also play along with you when I've mastered what you taught me. Thanks so much man for everything. The main song I'm so thankful for is cliffs of Dover. Anyways, keep it up man!!
oh god I remember when this used to be hard for me. it's crazy what practicing, feeling, thinking, and letting it sink in after a while can do.
by far my fav online teacher. There are others who are good, some talk way too much, some don't talk at all, some go too fast, some go to slow. None fit me better..
Well it took a couple hours but I have that crazy multitude of bends memorised. Now the hard part: make it sound right!
This guy is the best teacher out there, damn the way he simplifies complexity so impressive. Thankyou for being there as a teacher
My fingers hurt.
"Ohh what's that...your fingers hurt?"
"Well now your backs gonna hurt cause you just pulled landscaping duty"
Hey Carl, I see that you've done Brain Damage and Eclipse from the last tracks of "The Dark Side of the Moon"; but could you please please please also do a lesson on Any Color You Like?
Greetings from Berlin
Pretty sure it’s played on a keyboard
@@aml1418 nop guitar jam alllll the way.. poeple on youtube cover it, 2 guitars tho so goodlouck ;)
Nick Guitar oh really that’s sick
@@aml1418 listen to the live jam it’s long af and full of guitar and bass
This solo is like flowing through a river of emotions as we sail from one shore to the other and back..
What an amazing solo. This is defines rock and roll. So captivating.
Money is another lesson I would love to see you do especially the solo, thank you in advance!!!
This is so good that I can hear the rest of the song behind it without it actually being there. Awesome!!
Who the hell makes master pieces before breakfast ?_? Lol damn that solo gives me goose bumps I have the dark side of the moon album music book and thanks to you my interpretation sounds wayyyyy better thank you so much please do HAVE A CIGAR WITH SOLO OR MAROONED PLEASE :D
i was listening to the solo whilst riding home tonight, and looked for a good tutorial?
i found this one, and learnt from you in just one or two runs thru👍🏽
dude thanks for the great lesson. very good teacher. it took me 5 years trying to figure it out on my own and only took me 1 hour with your lesson. thanks!
8:33 "more bending here"
This one is harder than it looks, great tutorial thankyou!
I can search for any fucking song and this guy's done it I swear
You are the best TEACHER. Well done . THANKS
Loved this song, and especially this solo for probably 30 years or more. Dialing in the effects to get that mournful tone is a big part of it. Just started learning this lead this evening, since most times I've ever heard it I was too much in awe to believe I could make a guitar sound like this. Thanks for the lesson! I just have to keep at it. Using a Godin LG P90, Fender The Bends compressor, a Metal zone(no BS!) and MXR carbon copy (mod on) playing through a Deville 4x10. Huge fun!
Next to a guitarist they call "King" (Jimmie S.), you sir have the best tone and intonation that I have found spanning the globe, well at least the net, especially this song, and I agree 100% with joeguitargod! Jimmie became blind at an early age. I heard him play back in the 90's at a concert and he nailed The Star Spangled Banner (Hendrix) along with Time by PF. I have looked for a lesson by Boston (Hitch a Ride) and have found zilch thus far. In your "spare time" will you PLEASE do a lesson on the above as I would be forever grateful. Thank you for all the great lessons, what a difference a year makes!
Lessons now exist but you probably have found them by now
I really enjoy your teachings, I understand and learn really well from your videos. You're a fantastic teacher. and for free! all hail!
Высший пилотаж! Большое наслаждение при прослушивании чистого звука! ( Украина, Харьков)
If you actually listen closely to the end of the chorus before the solo, there’s an ascending pickup into first note that you are playing here.
Edit: I think it’s played in the bass. But it would be rad if it was worked into the guitar
Yayyyy! Congratulations on getting your channel back. You are such a great teacher. Thanks a ton ❤️
Carl! You are the greatest teacher ever. Thank you so much ❤️
This is still my all time favourite Floyd solo.
very well done getting the tone so close dude. its a nice refreshing change to see someone who has actually made the effort and learned the piece they are trying to demonstrate. Its a sorry amount of so called tutorials that are actually being played correctly which frankly is a crime and a pathetic way to fish for compliments whilst misleading young enthusiastic beginners, ultimately making it way more hassle for them to then re-learn it and end their niggling frustration that makes them think they are never going to sound like their heroes, When I am king I will form the guitar C.I.A (Competent Instructor Association) and the guitar F.P.I (Fakers and Posers Inquisition) the latter taking inspiration from the famed Spanish Inquisition employing all the traditional , medieval methods of tort.....er i mean interrogation.
One of the best and most beautiful solos for me. Thank you!
So easy to follow thanks for uploading this. Learned it in 15 miunutes. Unreal lesson
Thank you very much sir! It took me two days watching this vid. But as of right now i can play the whole time solo exactly how it sounds thanks to you! My eternal thanks :-) have a good night!

I know this is old, but you did a fine, fine job on it, Carl. A damned site better than some (brand name withheld) dvd lessons on it that I have in my files. Ol' reliable Carl.
Many thanks. Just finished learning this solo. Sour fingers...lol....I am so glad I found your site.
