  • BMW vs Audi Reliability
    It's time to look at BMW reliability and Audi reliability and pit the two carmakers versus each other. Who wins this battle of the German carmakers?
    This video talks at a high level and gives you a very clear answer on #BMW vs #Audi when it comes to #reliability. Audi's tend to have a higher cost of ownership just after the 6-year mark. After 10 years, BMW and Audi become relatively similar in terms of the cost of ownership.

      My Audis have been ultra reliable. A6 4.2 has never left me stranded and I have had for 7 years. My 2010 S4 has never had a single part failure. Only parts changed are wear and tear brakes, tires, filters and spark plug change. My cars go in once a year for service including my Porsches.

    I feel that Audi and BMW have cars that are reliable. They also have cars that are more unreliable. I believe if you take care of a car they will last you a long time but once something goes bad, they have similar prices if you take them to the dealer. If your cheap don’t bother to buy a foreign car because I don’t wanna hear about it’s reliability.

    I've had 3 audis, A3 no problems, A5 B&O amplifier blew up, nothing else. S4 actually no problems aside from some rattling from leather seat and aftermarket suspension issue. Audis have been quite good to me. *Fingers crossed*

    Having a current M3 and a previous S4 I can’t imagine the M3 is going to hold up as well. The S4 was reliable and solid as a vault at 100k. The M3 at 27k feels like a car that has been in a bad accident and rebuilt poorly

    Depends on the model and miles and how someone is taking care of the car. Every car model has some most common problems. Also keep in mind cars that used to cost 70k we buying them for half of that now or way less, no car payments. But maintenance hit us. Ones the warranty expires people getting rid of them. And that's for all German cars as they know the maintenance is expensive. So you may have issues or the car may run well. I have 07 Audi RS4 now, I used to have E46 m3. 2 different cars. Let's not talk about engine failures on some of the BMW models. :) Plus you own a BMW of course you gonna say bad things about Audi and that's fine.

    Thanks for the very interesting video. I have been a BMW 5 series owner for a number of years, but am currently looking at a 2015 Q5 Sline w/ 53K mileage (I was initially looking at A4 Avants so we can carry golf clubs on trips). The car history looks good as it was a leased and all work has been kept up to date (one owner). Wondering what I'd be looking at for future reliability issues, major work and costs to expect? Would it be worth it to get an extended warranty? I am a little worried about the bells and whistles as its just more electronics to on the fritz.

  • @Todd.T
    @Todd.T 5 років тому +4

    1. Don't go to the dealer out of warranty.
    2. A good mechanic will delay or advance replacing things to cut hourly service charges.
    3. A more complex car has more to break period.
    I see many people saying "wow, I'm glad I had warranty, that part was $5k". Yes, but if you didn't take it to the stealership, they would have replaced the $5 gasket instead of replacing the entire part. This is why getting information from those who visit the dealerships is a bad idea because you don't know what truly broke. My indie mechanic will tell me what goes on a used car I wish to purchase and will set up early/or preventative maintenance to avoid the issue if possible or reduce costs. Dealerships won't.

    I don’t know. I have a 13 Audi A5, my first Audi and in 2 years of ownership it’s been very reliable. It’s had 2 recalls which have been taken care of and the front control arm bushing, and fuel door mechanism which kept sticking replaced under warranty. I feel like the components such as the engine are more robust as they are shared with a variety of VW/Audi products. My 2.0t is the same as the GTi. My sister has had 3 GTis with no major issues over the last 10 years. Time will tell. So far Audi ownership hasn’t been as costly as my previous BMW however I’ve owned a 325ci and 328 e92 which were bullet proof.

  • @matreyia

    I have a theory on why folks think BMW (german or performance cars are less reliable than Japanese cars)
    These cars are made for spirited driving - as such, physical forces damage the parts more due to excessive power and handling stresses. After all, metal is metal whether it's Japanese or German. The only difference is that a Camry is driven mostly sedately vs. a BMW is driven like it is the ultimate driving machine. Both the driver habits and the engine power specifications have the deciding factor in wear and tear. If you drove a BMW like a Camry, I think it would last just as long...there is no magic in one car vs. the other.
    So when folks compare and criticize German performance cars vs. Japanese cars reliability...they do not compare apples to apples. They are two different types of cars with different abuse factors. Even if you are an MMA heavy weight, you fight, you get hurt...that's just a fact of life...even if you are genetically made for fighting and you train. You will get damaged. Now if you are an MMA heavy weight and you fight only kids... you will last much longer since you do not expend as much energy and do not get as much damage if any.
    As for cost of parts... there are some parts on a BMW that can be expensive but often times, I find BMW parts to be cheaper than a Nissan, Mazda, Toyota part... so that argument is not really valid.
    If you buy a BMW and drive it like it was designed...very aggressively, it can do that. Just understand that the wear factors will be much sooner than if you bought a corolla and drove it sedately. Why on Earth do you think corrollas last for decades with no issues? It only has 130hp and you cannot race it. If you do, watch it fall apart in a few months or weeks. I guarantee it.

    But the 3 series is better to drive.

All of the ones I am looking into currently have anywhere from 60-80k miles. Would it be a safe purchase and as long as maintenance is kept up and are there any major issues I should expect with that amount of mileage.

    • @ECPP
      @ECPP  4 роки тому +4

      Hi, thanks a lot for watching, it is much appreciated. The N55 is quite a sturdy car, and as you know, is quite a bit better than the N54 before it. Firstly 1 less turbo to fail, improvement on injectors, and overall more dialed in. That being said, they can have their coolant system issues too, albeit not as bad as the N54 cars. With all that said, would I buy one and have some confidence. I would, just look for some of the services on those typical problem areas.

    Auids are much more difficult to work on in my experience. There's so much less space under the hood of an Audi and I think it's because of the drive train design. With the engine out in front of the front axle, Audi has to make everything more compact as to minimize the excess mass in the worst possible place, in front of the axle. I just did timing chain guides on my 03 540i. It was a lot of work, but accessing the various components was relatively easy.

    I will say, one thing I notice on these videos about the reliability of German cars, whenever I look in the comments, is that their reliability is compared to Hondas and Toyotas. And yes, I'm aware that Honda and Toyota are seen as the paradigm for reliability, but when it comes to other Japanese brands, Mazda is considered very good too. I always felt like Mazda kinda counteracted the "Japanese cars are boring" argument that a lot of German cars fans said, as "zoom zoom" didn't come from nowhere. Also, I should note that South Korea's Hyundai and Kia have gotten a lot more reliable over the years as well, this is coming from a Sonata driver.
    I will say though that just from what I hear, German cars are usually more reliable than American cars, at least in the areas of engines and transmissions. While I own a Hyundai, the vast majority of the cars my parents owned were Chevys and Fords (in fact, all of our other cars in my family as a whole are Fords, other than my Sonata). All I can say is that while I wouldn't rule them out when I buy cars in the future, they have left bad tastes in my mouth. I doubt I'd ever seriously consider anything from Fiat Chrysler though, my family had numerous bad experiences with Chrysler products dating from World War II all the way to the early '80s.

  • @jpannellmd

    Average Audi ownership costs are still suffering from the backlash of the timing chain issues on the V8 4.2s that we’re used in the B6/B7 S4. It costs 8k to replace the Chain. If you exclude those cars, the difference isn’t so great. I’m sure someone will disagree with this, but they are both more reliable than Italian cars and safer than either American or Japanese/Korean brands.

    My e60 can show error codes all the time, but it never stops running. Errors come up and then go away. A few days ago I hooked it up to the Kess software to check for faults and there were more codes than the alphabet, but the car still takes me from A to B with no problem. Those errors have gathered so much during long time, but when we cleared them only two codes came up again for the fuel filter and the glow plugs. Also i suspect that i will need to put a fuel system additive to clean the injectors. Since i bought the car i have done about 15 000 miles and for 15 year old BMW diesel with 160 000 miles i don't think that this is a disaster. Glow plugs and relay are about 200$ and the fuel filter is around 25$. This is not much for a 280whp diesel. Take note that I am from Europe and prices may vary from US and Canada!

    True to what the video says, I bought a five year old ( at the time) high melieage 2006 Audi A6 S- Line off a 5 year lease. The guy that owned it bought it after a 3 year lease and drove it a lot of kms over and the dealership offered him squat for it. I paid squat plus $500. The car had a tech package, A6 rims, sport buckets ($4.5|K!!) and the 4.2 V8. The only car better than that was an S6 with a V-10. My car had been hit while parked and I was looking for a replacement.
    I knew I didn't want to go FSI because there was no solution to the FSI issues at the time, so I looked for a 2006 as the latest year I would purchase. Black lung was the name and the intake runners would cake with carbon.
    I get the car from the Audi dealership to where the guy's buddy was a mechanic. The dash had been upgraded to the colour LCD from the orangey/red one, had new Pirelli P6 tires and the guy had resurfaced the front rotors and replaced the pads. I got a free safety out of it and all of the transfer fees were paid by the guy that was giving up the car.
    I drive the car and then begin to notice a fine rattle occasionally. My indie says, I'm imagining things. On my third visit, I insist the rattle is getting louder. He takes the car out after an oil change and finds the subframe bolts were coming loose and removes each bolt, chases the receiving threads and wire wheels the bolts, loctites and torques the bolts in. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The car handles like it's on rails. The dealership had said the rattle was in the steering rack and had replaced it. Free new sterring rack on a high mileage car.
    I notice that when I run diagnostics someone has turned off the TPMS, but I don't care because I might have done it myself. The car occasionally has a burning oil smell and my mechanic says there is a drip from a gasket and it isn't worth fixing it after knowing how and when I drive the car and what I paid for it. It doesn't drip enough to leave a spot anywhere on my new driveway. The drivers side door doesn't close properly.$50 to a local body shop and the car is fixed. The rocker panel is rusting because the big tire is so close to it, it sandblasts the paint off. $200 at an excellent auto body who strips it down, zinc plates it, reapplies the duragard material and re sprays it with a lifetime warranty. Original paint on the car is brilliant and shiny. Everybody assumes the car is only two years old, the entire time I own it, unless they are car enthusiasts
    Hengst air filters, Mahle oil filters, Zimmerman rotors. All OEM parts before Audi (or BMW) is stamped on them. I've even bought Audi parts with the Audi logo ground off of them, from a parts supplier. The car had a cracked tail light and the water got in, the car won't shut up about it. It needs a new bulb holder. I buy the entire OEM tail light off of Amazon with the bulb holder and bulbs in it for $188 dollars. HID bulb goes at year 4, bought a new pair for $35 and a pair of licence plate lights for $12 and had them shipped to the house for $10. Front brake union goes. Audi used aluminum, but now stainless steel. $288 to replace (both sides) and bleed the brakes. Brakes still feel funny. Replace master cylinder $420. I have NEVER felt a better brake in my life. Closest thing was a 1996 Toyota Supra, which was fantastic.
    I get a CEL 4 years in. It's the temperature sensor. I ask if it affects the car and my mechanic says no and it isn't worth "going in" to fix it. He knows I have a target cost and purpose for the car. CEL stays until the Hitachi alternator calls it quits a year later. My first big expense. $450 to pull the front of the car, $1850 for the alternator, $280 for a new battery (changed it just in case) $160 for cooling hoses (liquid cooled alternator) $280 for the temperature sensor we ignored earlier and $160 for oil change.
    Car runs great. Six months later starting is erratic. I suspect the starter cable is corroded. It runs fine and then won't start far away from my house in front of the stealership I bought it from. It is Saturday, I had no choice and no towing service (at the time). The stealership says it needs a new starter and then hands me a $1200 bill which outlines how corroded the starter wire was. So they ripped me off to make money. I bet my indie would have fixed it for $150.
    Five years later, I replace the brakes for $947 and cannot believe how strong they are. I move the seat back to stop jerky braking like a grandma. I also put 245/40/18 Conti DWS06 tires on it for $1000. I vow to get rid of the car and vow to not fix anything again.
    The CEL light comes on. Car runs great, so |I leave it. I drive the tar out of the thing. Sport seats are like sitting in a catchers mitt. I bait "sporty" regular cars who think they can easily take my 4200lb monster into corners and floor it part way through and watch them almost wreck in the rearview mirror. There always was a chip in the front window. It was drilled and filled and did not increase in size until now. Spirited driving is having an effect, but I am not forking over a grand to replace the window.
    A valve that directs cold/hot air goes. $350 to fix myself, but I'll never recoup it so screw it. Forgot to mention, at year three the anti dazzle side mirrors (Glass only) call it quits. Cost? $1400!! Online and get a set with no dazzling feature or price for $150. This is why you see all the Euro cars with gold mirrors. They've gone bad. Now it's time for a mandatory emissions test, and oil change. I have reached my target year and want to sell. I don't want to pay to check what the CEL costs, I don't want to try to sell it and have someone complain about the front window needing to be replaced. I don't want to pay for an emissions test or an oil change. The rear side door decided to be erratic with locking and the alarm won't fully arm and I'm not paying to fix that either
    People that buy new Fords and GMs would balk at the price of the mirrors and the alternator and say "I would never pay that much or buy that car". Instead, they leased two new cars in the time I had that one car at a cost of $38000 each. Their cars rusted and rattled and drove like a POS and they told me they could never afford my car. I paid $14k for the car and traded it in for $2500 with all of the stuff like the front window issue, HVAC issue, unknown CEL light issue. So $11500 for just under 7 years plus repairs.
    What a car. On the highway it was a quiet tank and could cruse at high speeds effortlessly and engage highway to highway transition ramps at much higher than posted speeds. It loves windy back roads with it's V8 power and huge brakes. Quattro assisted when you stomped on the brakes leaving lights, surprising many. Beautiful three stage paint that looked blue most of the time, but was grey. Active headlights. Proximity key. Seats four adults and drives like there is only one person in the car despite the added weight.
    I could drive a Corolla that is more reliable, but you can't trip and fall... if you've never run. I'm only going to be on the face of the earth for so long. I went to school and got a job and now I have money to do what I want. My current 2 year old A6 is on payments, not leased. I will run it the same way. It makes more sense to sell the car with bald tires, bad brakes and a busted window than it does to fix it because you'll never recoup your losses. You take a loss on the value of the car selling it needing repairs, but your savings will exceed the losses and you use the money for a down payment on the next car.
    Stealerships work on your emotions, I'm a numbers guy. No warranties if I can help it. Usually the cost of warranty is the same as a major repair. Roll the dice. If you get caught, the cost is the same. If you squeak by, you just saved cash. I'm almost up $4500 in avoiding extra warranty on electronics over the years. If something breaks, just man up and pay it. You can't win them all, but you can be as efficient as hell and come close. Driving these cars is a science.

    Interesting that you can continue to drive a car with a check engine light on indefinitely in Canada. Here in the U.S., at least in Texas, you cannot pass inspection and renew your registration for the new year if you have a check engine light on. This creates two ton paper weights for otherwise fully operational vehicles for financially strapped people that can't afford costly repairs year after year.

    wouldnt a RWD car always cost less to repair compared to a FWD? Things are much easier to access? I had a jetta where the only "legal" way to change the vacuum pump was to remove the transmission! Of course people found another way to do this by disassembling the vacuum pump and installing it piece by piece!

    The goal of this comment is to be constructive feedback.
    You've shown the repair quotes compared across different model , some type of non-consistent repair (gearbox , body , engine & cooling , and security) but you haven't shown the frequency of those repairs.
    If we take one of your example about your doge pickup , the part (and generaly the repair) is cheap BUT it's frequent .
    Thus I've check the source on the AM website and I found out that this article is based on an other article and here is a quote from the original article :
    "Reliability is the key difference here as there were 20 times more Audi Cam belt Change quotes requested in 2017 compared to BMW Timing Belt requests and a whopping 100 times more than Mercedes. Due to the volume of requests and the expense of a Cam belt Change, this is likely causing the overall maintenance costs to come out higher for Audi.
    Mercedes Clutch Replacements were quoted at £670.58 on average compared to BMW at £544.85 and Audi at £578.39. Showing that although Mercedes tend to be the cheapest of the three brands, on bigger jobs they can be pricey.
    [...] The gap appears at the 5 year mark, Audi repair costs leap and the gap is at its most obvious up to year 8. Audi are around £75 more expensive than Mercedes as this point and around £25 more expensive than BMW.
    "
    Statistics can say anything if you don't provide enough information.
    An average mean nothing by itself since someone can get a 2000$ quote(let's say a M car) and four other person can get a 125$ quote(I series) and the average would be 500$ but one person can get a 600$ quote and four other persons get a 475$ quote and it is still an 500$ average .

    I really dont understand what are you talking about. As a mechanic i know for a fact that every audi part costs less than bmw part. What i mean by that is if you have a3 or a4 and series 3 or series 1 for that matter,for audi you will pay less for the same part. Both brands have issues but when you order audi part you are buying part for seat,skoda,vw and audi. I am an owner of an audi a3 and bmw e92. I love them both but i had much more problems with bmw than with audi. I moded them both, audi is far better for mods then bmw i can you tell that. Bmw is like a nike it is a big name so you pay big money, it is bigger name than audi. Audi has better interior and exterior materials than bmw. Again i know this for a fact. But bmw to me just looks better than audi and has that old school driving expirience to it which i love. Please dont spread misinformations i get you like bmw i like it too but be realistic man. Good luck.

Kind of confused on what this video was suppose to show considering you have videos on your channel showcasing how unreliable bmws are; old an new models. U say audis more unreliable, den how you explain how audi hold their value better compared to bmw? • @penvon
      @penvon 5 років тому +2

      recklezz _973 Another problem with him is he always seems to bring up economical Japanese brands...If I buy a Honda per say for $20k & I Buy a BMW for $45k I would most certainly think the BMW will be more reliable based on “You get what you pay for”...But if over the years the BMW seems to be giving a few issues and it costs almost the same amount as my now used Honda to fix then I’d be flabbergasted...He never seems to bring up cost of ownership between the cheaper Japanese brands over a German brand...like who compares a Corolla or civic with a BMW & then goes on to say BMW is more reliable? Just doesn’t add up with this guy.

    • @goguhu
      @goguhu 5 років тому +2

      No you are factual wrong here ... BMW hold their value better ... a quick search reveals that.
      2009 Audi, 100,000 miles ~$6,500
      2009 BMW 100,000 miles ~$8,000
      They both cost about the same new (+/- 5%), and this is more than 5%. You can also check kelly BB
      www.kbb.com/audi/a4/2009/20t-sedan-4d/?intent=buy-used&mileage=107022&pricetype=retail&condition=good&persistedcondition=good
      www.kbb.com/bmw/3-series/2009/328i-sedan-4d/?intent=buy-used&mileage=114721&pricetype=retail&condition=good&persistedcondition=good
      Audi $6,742
      BMW $7,784
      Interestingly though is Audi tend to list for a higher price than what's fair (relative speaking), so from the owners view you might be right ... they think they have a higher value, but they sell for less. But even the listing price IS less than BMW $7,200 vs $7,800, but as you can see closer gap. I would state based on my search for used cars and checking with KBB, I feel quite sure your claim is wrong.
      The reason a car depreciate faster/slower is part due to how reliable they are, but also how far they have been driven, what / where they are being used and how people perceive the cars. So your conclusion is right, but your premises was wrong.
      Here is a video to another guy, that is showing the JD survey ... ua-cam.com/video/17W_1HNXaXs/v-deo.html
      Guess what ... BMW is at #13 (over average), Audi at #23 (below average).
      Note most cars are in the center band, where the top 11 stand out being significantly better, and bottom 3 much worse. BMW is about 11.5% more reliable than Audi, but way behind Lexus. PS: Lexus tend to be driven less aggressive, no tuner environment, no track days and no street hooligans. This of course make the cars more reliable based on how they drive. If you had an 'art car' I bet it would be on the top ... because it's not driven. Same goes for the other end ... Land Rover ... guess what / how those cars are used / driven. Offroad - all the time (not every one though ... Beverly hills they tend to stand outside and transport hats and small dogs ... So it's also expected they get much rougher treatments, and hence will fall apart faster.
      I was surprised that MB was that much behind though, and how poor Volvo is (super non-sporty cars), as well as Kia (I guess they are behind). On other side Buick was a surprise to me, but men in hat driving to Bingo have very few issues till they crash into a parking meter.

      goguhu i can agree with probably everything you said but i do have some points to point out. The video showing audi ranked lower than bmw in terms of reliability was released in 2018 but was based on statistics from 2001 or somewhere around that time. Not a fair comparison considering audi was jus reestablishing themselves after new company tried to sabotage their cars a few yrs earlier, but no excuses. I agree with your kbb comparison but i did my own comparison and as you can see, just a few yrs later and the reverse of your example is now true
      www.kbb.com/audi/s4/2013/premium-plus-sedan-4d/?vehicleid=377822&intent=buy-used&mileage=74359&pricetype=retail&condition=good
      www.kbb.com/bmw/3-series/2013/335i-xdrive-sedan-4d/?vehicleid=382137&intent=buy-used&category=sedan&mileage=79262&pricetype=retail&condition=good
      I used cars that im really interested in...my all time favorite car Audi S4, an my 2nd all time fav car 335i xdrive because its so close to the s4. I also used 2013 because everyone knows bmw first year tends to be problematice, also 2013 was audi new facelift of the s4. As you see s4 has better value from dealer. We all know why bmw 335 xdrive has been largely problematic an yes da s4 aren’t without fault but clearly not as much as 335. I guess what i really wana say is that all cars have problems and all cars will be great if the operators cared for them i love them both, audi an bmw, faults an all but i dislike when people try to bash the competition in favor of their favorite car or w.e. We should all jus be enjoying our cars an complementing eachother and encouraging one another but 🤷🏾‍♂️

      @@recklezz_9738 You know that the Audi you picked there cost $11k more new than the BMW? ($54k for Audi, $43k for BMW).
      I assume we both are looking at percentage and not absolute drop?
      Audi $22.5k / 54k = 41.6%
      BMW $18.5k / $43k = 43.0%
      So even your example the BMW keep it's value better (granted there would not be a huge difference between BMW/Audi/MB for the first 10 years, as they are cross shopped for the low/mid levels). Exception would be on the S-class AMG (drops like a rock).
      The S4 is sitting between the bass 3 and 3'M ... so you need to compare that with a M335i (I did not find them on KBB, might be too few out to have data on them, as they are 'newer' than Audi S.
      Audi goes : A -> S -> RS
      BMW foes : 3 -> M3xx -> M3
      But the M3xx did not exist back then, so I decided to pick entry level (A vs 3).

      goguhu didnt think of comparing the 2 from a new point of view cuz i no i couldnt afford them new but im aware how much da s4 costs new cus like i said it is my fav. As i stated i only compared the 2 cuz i was cross shoppn the 2. Even so i think da comparison still stands cuz da s4 had more power an da 335 msport still had same power as da regular 335. So da price gap could be justified by power output. U can even look at the 328 msport price gap to da 335msport an wont be hard to see the 335 being priced as da s4 wit same output. Hint: 340 cost close to 60k an only has 320hp. The two are the closest comps i could find an price wise could be justified wit the power difference, an all s4 came stand 333hp like all 335 came wit 300hp. So if u really want a perfect comp u would hav to get a 335 wit 333hp an see how dat costs an goin based on 340 im sure dat would be way over a stock s4 an den we can see wat dat drop in price would look like

    I don't think that Bmw is more reliable than Audi.
    Bmw is a small manufacturer with only 2,5 millions sells per year.
    Audi is part of one of the biggest car manufacturers. (VW approx. 10 millions sells per year)
    It is not possible to achieve the same durability with the same costs when the manufacturer is smaller.
    Most of the Audi engines are also used in Vw.
    Yes BMW makes good high end cars. But they do not make good mass produce cars.
    Especially the 3 series interieur shows that fact very well.
    It looks cheap. It looks like in the compact class BMW 1series.
    In this area Audi is much more premium in my opinion.

    The saying take care of the car and the car will take care of you doesn't apply to german cars.You can do all the maintenance you want but you can't replace the bad engineering or you have to engineer ways to fix those well thought mistakes bmw and audi made on purpose

      The b58 in the 340 is still quite new but it is shaping up to be improved over the n55 as in the 335!so I would personally buy the newer car. Also did you know that the engine from the 340 is the same engine used in the new Toyota Supra and also the new restyled Lexus IS.

      Furthermore after I got an other issue led me to replace car cooling system (cost me around 1700$ to replace ) , I decided to sell the car ( It was nice car to drive) and ordered the new bmw x5.
      Where I live the agency gives 5 years of warranty or up-to 100,000 km, l learnt my lesson to not keep any luxury car outside of its warranty period.
