as someone who’s self-taught and always using the wrong fingers when playing, it can be difficult to switch hands and it makes it more complicated when playing. I’ve decided to finally learn about this and it’s helping a lot!
Do you think that practicing using flowkey app fingering position is good ? It shows you already the finger position so you don’t need to do the extra work of figuring out which finger to use
As a former broadcaster, I can see that you also have a gift for talking about things that you love. You provide a great deal of context and detail to meet your goal of communicating these ideas, and for a beginner level player like myself, that detail is very important.
I just got my keyboard as a Christmas present early (my wife is traveling home cause I'm watching the dogs while we're overseas), but my knowledge as bare minimum as possible. I look forward to learning from your videos. My biggest question right now is how to know where most instructors like yourself are actually demonstrating from on the keyboard? Are you centered? More rightward? I don't even know the keys so I'm not kidding when I said I'm bare minimum.
4:47 this is an eye-opener. I always thought the reason for me learning the scale fingering was so that I could play melodies or move across the piano like that. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you!!! I was so stressed out. I just started playing. I started with Taylor Swift's Enchanted. I love the song and decided I was going to learn how to play it. I have zero experience. I just dove right in. I did what felt natural but then I panicked. I started a training course and they said put your fingers on middle. When I tried to play from that position, I would play most of the notes with my pinky😂😂😂. No dice.
Thanks, appreciate that! I have lessons on chord building etc at the moment if you take a look around on the channel. Nothing as of yet about harmonising a melody but I do have some ideas for the future 🎹
I just came across your channel. I'll look into more of your videos. Regarding fingering, I hate learning a new piece because I absolutely can't stand figuring out the fingering. I always tried to go over or under so as not to make jumps, but I see now that sometimes you just have to. You're so right about using the same fingering each time. A long time ago, my teacher told me that, too.
Wow, THANK YOU so very much. This video is just what I've been looking for. It's really loaded with great information on fingerings. Again , THANKS !!! 🤗🤗🤗
Your love for teaching shines through in every moment, and your dedication to delivering valuable content is evident. Thank you for sharing your expertise .
I started out with the piano and now I play a Roland accordion. You, by far give the best tutorial on fingering. You must have had excellent piano teachers. My first piano teacher would rapt my knuckles when I played a wrong note. Not good.
I'm surprised that this channel doesn't have more views. The content is excellent. There's quite a bit of valuable instruction here but it can get lost if the viewer doesn't stop the vid and thoroughly understand each segment as it is presented.
Sheet music varies and often does have fingering. If not I usually add it myself - the beginning is very important. Use the fingering from the scale if possible.
I only just started to learn to play the piano, but I am already at the point where I am trying to figure out how to move up/down the scale without tripping over my own fingers.
just switched to piano from the mandolin and struggling. no set rules for finger positions, very easy to learn it the wrong way. will be great to see more videos on grouping the fingers, technique.
I play multiple instruments and I feel like conundrums related to fingerings are uniquely challenging on piano it’s one of the things that frustrates me most about playing
It was useful but I think you moved a little to fast for me a beginner. But overall I was able to get some good tricks and steps. I now know what to start practicing next to up my piano game up. Thank you for the video 😁
amazing video!!! i'm a not-so-beginner starting to get a bit of control of the keys and i haven't found anyone going that in depth about this subject and specially not with so many practical examples! it really helped a lot thank you!!
Great teaching!! Sir I am from India I am playing Hindi Songs While playing songs I am using Index finger and middle finger to play the songs giving less preference to thumb, ring and pinky finger this happens because my fingers are short then the normal person in our songs there are intervals of 1,2,3,4,5 and some time 6 while playing songs if I use all the fingers feel awkward please answer how to get rid of this problem I like to use all the fingers but then I loose rhythm please help me out
I just wish all music sheets have proper finger position for guidance. To study a piece is already a challenge and to figure out which fingers to use makes life harder.
What app for Windows or Android could you recommend to write and edit your own sheet music? I want to try, but I'm afraid I can't do this just on paper yet
New to music playing and just curious - does using an app to help learn/recognise notes by ear help with learning to play in the short/long term? And if so, is learning that a difficult feat (am I naive to be thinking about this)?
Glad it helped, takes experience too of learning things where the sheet or someone shows you the best fingering until you get really good at finding your own
Possibly stupid beginner question - all of this focuses on one hand. Is the general rule that the left hand covers the left-hand side and the right covers the right? At which point do you switch hands when playing from left to right or vice versa? Maybe there's no right or wrong answer!
I have a couple of old videos to suggest. Naming the black keys ua-cam.com/video/FqIqB9Q5Aeg/v-deo.html About Scales and why we learn them ua-cam.com/video/n-Mj1rnOZrM/v-deo.html
What about people like me, who do analyze things such as finger positioning... but to the extreme where I've got analysis paralysis. Find it so hard to move forward not knowing which route is the best route. Ahhh 😬
Lmao, my skills remain the same for 9 years beacuse I always skip fingering lesson and exercise. I have perfect pitch, know almost every chord but have a very poor execution and play wrong notes instead the riff I intended to play
No it depends on what you're playing, sometimes there's only one way that could possibly work but often there's different things that would work. If you're learning scales and standard exercises like that, it's best to stick to the standard fingers though
Yes, they’re examples to demonstrate principles, I assume you’re implying that there’s things I played which are too advanced for beginners. I can’t remember all the examples I used as this was from quite a while ago but like I say I was just trying to explain the thinking behind how we use fingers cleverly to help move around aiming to get people in the right mindset.
@@PianoFromScratch no prob yes it's pretty advanced. your fingers move slightly different because of experience I do get it.. I'm a Spanish flamenco guitarist. 👍
as someone who’s self-taught and always using the wrong fingers when playing, it can be difficult to switch hands and it makes it more complicated when playing. I’ve decided to finally learn about this and it’s helping a lot!
Yea takes experience but it does get easier and you start to feel more control eventually!
I’m in the same situation
same

Agreed, relatable
EXCELLENT! Finally someone who can explain this with solid examples, I'm a begginer accordionist and been struggling A LOT with this. Thanks a lot
Glad it was helpful!
This was my burning question for the past 3 years, and your video completely answered it.
Thanks a lot!

for an older person struggling to use the right fingers this is just wonderful thanks so much
This is one of the best piano videos on UA-cam.
Thanks, glad it was helpful
I originally thought the pinky finger played the melody note. THis helped immensely

Thank you master 😇

It takes a little while to gain a natural awareness of which fingers you're using but keep going, it'll come!
Very clear, and concise.
Really good video. Thanks from Texas.
I was wondering about finger placements. This video is extremely helpful.
This is incredible! Thank you!
Thanks for this upload I really needed it👍Great tips!!

Great video. I tried playing by ear but ended up in hospital with concussion.
Amazing teacher brother, just what I need.
Glad to hear it helped!
yes i struggle with it
Im not sure how you can do this with boogie woogie when you run up and down the keyboard?
thoughts?
Thank you for this. Have subscribed
Welcome aboard!
I thought everyone uses the same fingers for every song 😳 I didn’t know there was ootions
You seem to have Genelec loudspeakers from Iisalmi, Finland. Are you satisfied with them??
Yes they're great! Had them for a long time now
I just wish all music sheets have proper finger position for guidance. To study a piece is already a challenge and to figure out which fingers to use makes life harder.
Yes, currently that is my struggle.
Wow. So finger kinesthetic is integral in melody expression.
Yes this 👆

Yes. You are tuning your ears. It helps you play from sound and also anticipation
Teacher can i learn by using a roll up piano?
What about when I look at piece if it's middle C or above middle C.
Very helpful my big challenge is knowing the fingering on piano right I don’t want to learn wrong fingering that will cause a bad habit
Glad it helped, takes experience too of learning things where the sheet or someone shows you the best fingering until you get really good at finding your own
Thank you u b awesome!!
I am just starting.
Good Luck!
I have five fingers but I use three of them 😅😂
Exactly what I needed to hear
I have small hands so I try to flip notes

I'm 100 percent self thought and I have no idea what these words mean for example "scale" and "b flat"

I struggle

My bloody thumbs are key stubborn 😣
