I find it very helpful to know that, so when a teacher is talking I understand the language a little bit. Chord progression I-V-vi-IV? I know what that means and I know which is the V in any key--also the IV by going counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise to you). Also, very good tips in this video. Thanks!

Thank you for your 12 tips! I bought a Yamaha electric piano and paid for a subscription. I became so frustrated trying to learn in a structured environment that I gave up after several months. I'm back now and trying to create my own structure based on how I learn and listening to your 12 tips will help me visualize a visualized framework of how the pieces fit together and their importance. Think it is important for a beginner to be able to play chords as soon as possible. You can then accompany yourself while doing scales and simple note progressions. Much easier and more pleasant to practice scales when you have an accompaniment and you may get some feeling for the quality of sound as well. Many beginners are put off the piano because they are obliged to learn to read music as well as learning the keyboard patterns: a bit like expecting a toddler to learn reading as well as uttering first words, at the same time. In other words, beginners will be put off learning if they do not experience some degree of melody in the early stages. I think many piano courses are aimed at passing examinations and sometimes natural musical desire becomes ignored. I was in a music shop some time ago and I noticed there were no student books beyond grade 5. When I asked why, the response was that most of the pupils never went beyond this level and they could always order books if requested. Your ideas are excellent for me as an older learner as you get the beginner to learn the keyboard patterns straight away. Thank you.
I would definitely just work harder and try and learn more if I started again. Every time I have periods of playing a lot, after a while I can really feel the difference
I've really been enjoying piano this time around. I've tried to self teach a few times over the past 3 years and this seems to be the time thats sticking? This is silly but, dark souls had taught me how to enjoy playing piano? Its a game that's all about one thing, learning a complex combat system and defeating the challenges (boss fights) in a way that works for you. The best way I've found to enjoy these incredible difficult games? Break it down set your own goals and slowly focus on mastery, not on winning. This approach is 100% how you should enjoy your piano practice. Trying to rush through? Sloppily playing a peice over and over till yay I did it? Thats like summoning 4 phantoms (online players) to kill the boss for you. No skill was gained no challenge overcome. So I practice piano by carefully practicing using the Absolute Accuracy Rule AAR and practice at a challenging level till i can get the notes right 7 times in a row. Its great.

Love your videos, I just want to comment on my position! I am 75 years old retired and living solely on social security, so I can’t afford lessons. I saved up enough to purchase the Simply Piano app, and have been learning 14 months now. I spend 2 hours a day and have reached a solid intermediate 1. I tried jumping ahead and got out of wack and so I went back to the beginning and brushed through the 100’s of songs that I have gotten 3 Stars on! My problem is trying to memorize a song without the app or sheet music!! Also could you number your chord videos I would like to study them in order and then start on scales ! Only fooling yourself with an app mate. Its a bit like duolingo for lanuage learning, takes you up to a basic level but you need to fimd other sources pretty quickly

Haha thanks. Yes can definitely be overwhelming thinking about everything to learn when you first start a new skill/hobby. It's just about taking one step at a time! The thing I have found teaching kids versus adults is that kids (generally) don't have a fear of making mistakes where adults do and it can hold them back really going for it. Mistakes are part of the process and should be embraced as they're helpful to learn from. Also it's not performing surgery it's just playing piano and its fun so don't worry about sounding bad to start with!
Tip no. 8 really saved me from the biggest insecurity I've always had. Now I can just practice sight reading with simpler pieces and not feel like a failure because of it😅😅
I've been playing piano for 40 days now. I learned the notes from scratch, and my 1st classical piece ever is JS Bach Prelude in C Major, which I now memorised and play sort of continuously with 1-2 hiccups. was it the right move / choice in your opinion? which piece would you recommend as the 2nd one? I think I'd rather learn something moder for a change, I like rock music, but some pop / ballad would be ok too I guess. I really enjoy your approach, and especially this video lays everything out. as a real beginner, I truly appreciate your advice, so that I can make better decisions and make better use of the precious time.
Thanks very much for this very helpful video and all your other videos. I have found them to be some of the clearest and easy to follow piano instruction videos on UA-cam. I am pretty much a beginner and have found a good teacher. We are using the Alfred’s book that you mentioned and it does cover a wide variety of skills. Because of the expense I am probably going to have to switch from weekly to monthly lessons. You mentioned Piano Lab and I will check it out. Another UA-cam teacher who I have found helpful is Jason Zac at the Nathaniel School of Music. (Lots of free lessons) One last thing I would mention is the great list of your videos in the description of this video. It will be very helpful to have them listed by topic. Thanks for this great resource.
This is really helpful, thank you once again! Makes these initial steps feel much less intimidating. I'm interested to hear what you said about not teaching students to read and play together at the start. I had lessons where this was the approach and I found it to be really confusing, which then stunted my progression and enjoyment. I think if I had just got straight into playing by ear and learning theory practically, I could have got a more immediate connection to piano. It's taken me a while to develop, and your channel has helped so much with that. Really pleased to see so many coming to the channel and saying how clear and practical all of your info is. I agree! Another channel with some interesting exercises is Creative Piano Academy, which some of your watchers might find useful as an addition to your videos.
Yes I guess some people will prefer reading at the same time but for a lot of people it puts them off. Most humans learn to speak before they read or write
Piano marvel is good, it includes the Alfred all in one book you mentioned also. That means you can work thru the book and all the pieces are in the app which you hook up via midi and see how you are doing with teach one.

Most teachers would probably agree with everything you have said. I found that starting off reading music provided a security blanket and clear focus. My teachers all want me to come in for regular lessons which is a problem because I need time to study each piece and lots of practice in order to play it well. Alfred All In One is a good compromise as it provides theory, method, and lots of music and allows progress at any rate which is comfortable for the student and helps with many of the skills in a way that a teacher would. Anyway, I learned lots from book 1 and am now on book 2 review section. Just my thoughts. I took lessons as a young person and discontinued piano for 60 years before realizing that it is my instrument of choice.
Yes good point about giving you a clear focus. With regard to the regular lessons, it really depends on each teacher's business model and how much they teach. Some are fine to do lessons as and when, and that may even work better for them too if perhaps they're busy as a performing musician as well. For others, it's their primary work and can only to take on/invest their time into students who can keep a regular schedule. 🙂
I think teachers don't stress Tip 1 enough. You can practice ear training and scales all you want which is extremely important but if you're too scared to try your first pieces it wont mean much.

As always a great video. I do wonder though if/when you (would) start some song lessons yourself? I get that your channel wants to give more basics and there are a ton of channels that dissect songs out there. However, it would be helpful *because* you are such a great teacher! What would help next to song would be more rhythm stuff. I don't find reading sheet music that difficult when it comes to the actual notes but the whole rhythm bit really throws me off.
Potentially, yes I have thought about it but also worry that algorithm wise, it may hurt the channel overall if it created a split in the audience who are here for different things, tricky one. Also not 100% what the deal with copyright would be. Perhaps a 2nd channel one day for song tutorials might be an alternative idea
Thanks for all your help. I got a few of your PDF’s and use them everyday. A question I have is are scale degrees an important thing to know immediately and are they the same thing as intervals? Do you have a video on that?
Pretty much the same thing yes, it's just that saying a full interval name gets more specific but that's not always necessary to say the whole thing. It's always useful to be aware of where in the scale you are to keep yourself oriented otherwise it can be like being at sea with no landmarks in sight. For that you just have to think in scale degrees but you don't have to consciously say every note you play as a number, you can just picture how the notes move in the scale and use the odd reference point, for example, in a major scale, deck the halls melody begins on the 5th note.
I am 67 years old and I am just starting out learning the piano. For Christmas my wonderful son gave me a Soundbrenner Pulse. I tried to use the app for using the exact metronome settings but after I am done using it and turn it off it is still draining my phone battery. Have you encountered this and if so is there a way to eliminate this from happening? Thank you for your help. I enjoy your Channel.

I created a blank piano with some painting software (can't remember the name) then I just fill in the notes I want and created a bank of images I will often use like chords/scales

Yaar woh mode wala video udh gaya phone karne ke chakkar mein. I was just trying summarize modes or.. how notes are flattened or raised in various modes or is there certain progressive pattern in them in various that we can easily memorize or arrange in.. in some pattern or logic. Anyway we will complete it if we someday encounter it again. Lets put mode learning to back burner till then. 😀
Might be tricky to find 61 keys weighted. Can't remember seeing less than 73 or 76 keys. I recommenced full size if you can, 73 be ok for a while up to a point but 61 can be quite limiting to play 🎹
I have the Roland GO PIANO and it has 61 keys that are synth action keys with 4 layers of touch sensitivity (3 layers and fixed). It is a great little device! However it is not weighted
Yes you can, lots of people do and lots of things we do don't involve sheet music BUT there are definitely lots of benefits to understanding the basics of sheet music to help you learn and understand new music. You don't have to spend a tonne of time getting really good/quick at reading music, that's the hard bit and a long process. But just learning the basics and how to figure something out slowly is much easier
I just started learning a few months ago. Spent the first month doing lessons on the Flowkey app but then began learning ludivine einaudi nuvole bianche. Not reading the music but following along synthesia style. Been playing that for about a month now memorizing how to play it. I feel like when I’m done I’ll have to relearn the things I started off with other than the scales I know. Is that a bad habit to get into from the start?
Funnily enough I just started that with a student the other day (she has been playing a few years though and wanted to learn it) Are you playing the full versions or a simplified version because it may be a little advanced for only a few months for lots of people which could be making it feel harder to memorise. It's in F minor (4 flats) which is likely less familiar to you, it's in a harder time signature too for a beginner and uses bigger hand positions. I do have a video with some memory tips in by the way but here's one. Just try learn really small sections (even a bar or 2 at a time) and really nailing them until you can't forget, before learning the next bit
@@PianoFromScratch I learned the full version. Such a nice sounding piece. It did take a while but I worked at it slow until I got piece by piece. I only have the last little section ending to learn but that’s pretty basic. I play it over and over daily trying to get it smoothly and my speed up. But now after I’m done I feel like I have to start over my learning experience again, do you think it’s ok to learn this way as long as I keep doing the basics again? What’s your opinion on just learning songs using synthesia ?
Ok well done for getting it then! Now you have it, just make sure you play it often enough that you retain it. I might suggest also finding some simpler material and keep up with scales, broken chords etc where it's going to be easier to work on elements of technique more effectively. With simpler stuff too, it's easier to recognise more of the musical language, the chords etc and learn music is put together. At the end of the day synesthesia videos give you the notes you need...but.. long term it becomes quicker and easier to find out the notes when you learn to read music, plus you can have it in front of you and check any part of it easily. Also the few of those videos I have seen don't always sound particularly musical if they are programmed and not played. I think a video of seeing someone play as a beginner is useful as you can also see fingers plus how their hands move etc and get some technique pointers
@@PianoFromScratch thanks for the tips. I did watch UA-cam lessons on that song that show the hands playing and the visual bars coming down too. Those are better then the weird sounding versions you mentioned that don’t sound like a real piano. I bought your pdfs on chords and minor scales( I should’ve got the major scale instead) but haven’t actually gone over it much since I’ve been learning this song. The chords pdf was so many pages my printer ran out of ink lol.
Really listening....? I learned " Cristafori's Dream" by David Lantz using A-B repeat on my CD player. I'd listen about 5-10 seconds of the song, duplicate it, (both left and right hands) play it,, then move on. It took about a month, but I did it! I wouldn't recommend this style. It was frustrating at times.
No, not really. There's a lot more than this to get to at some point, I'm really just emphasising making a start on the basics in lots of really important areas of learning an instrument you need

Anyway, I learned lots from book 1 and am now on book 2 review section. Just my thoughts. I took lessons as a young person and discontinued piano for 60 years before realizing that it is my instrument of choice.
Yes good point about giving you a clear focus. With regard to the regular lessons, it really depends on each teacher's business model and how much they teach. Some are fine to do lessons as and when, and that may even work better for them too if perhaps they're busy as a performing musician as well. For others, it's their primary work and can only to take on/invest their time into students who can keep a regular schedule. 🙂

I think teachers don't stress Tip 1 enough. You can practice ear training and scales all you want which is extremely important but if you're too scared to try your first pieces it wont mean much.

As always a great video. I do wonder though if/when you (would) start some song lessons yourself? I get that your channel wants to give more basics and there are a ton of channels that dissect songs out there. However, it would be helpful *because* you are such a great teacher!
What would help next to song would be more rhythm stuff. I don't find reading sheet music that difficult when it comes to the actual notes but the whole rhythm bit really throws me off.
Potentially, yes I have thought about it but also worry that algorithm wise, it may hurt the channel overall if it created a split in the audience who are here for different things, tricky one. Also not 100% what the deal with copyright would be. Perhaps a 2nd channel one day for song tutorials might be an alternative idea

Thanks for all your help. I got a few of your PDF’s and use them everyday. A question I have is are scale degrees an important thing to know immediately and are they the same thing as intervals? Do you have a video on that?
Pretty much the same thing yes, it's just that saying a full interval name gets more specific but that's not always necessary to say the whole thing. It's always useful to be aware of where in the scale you are to keep yourself oriented otherwise it can be like being at sea with no landmarks in sight. For that you just have to think in scale degrees but you don't have to consciously say every note you play as a number, you can just picture how the notes move in the scale and use the odd reference point, for example, in a major scale, deck the halls melody begins on the 5th note.

I can't find the Piano From Scratch video promised talking about how to not have tension playing the piano.
I am 67 years old and I am just starting out learning the piano. For Christmas my wonderful son gave me a Soundbrenner Pulse. I tried to use the app for using the exact metronome settings but after I am done using it and turn it off it is still draining my phone battery. Have you encountered this and if so is there a way to eliminate this from happening? Thank you for your help. I enjoy your Channel.

I created a blank piano with some painting software (can't remember the name) then I just fill in the notes I want and created a bank of images I will often use like chords/scales

Yaar woh mode wala video udh gaya phone karne ke chakkar mein. I was just trying summarize modes or.. how notes are flattened or raised in various modes or is there certain progressive pattern in them in various that we can easily memorize or arrange in.. in some pattern or logic.
Anyway we will complete it if we someday encounter it again. Lets put mode learning to back burner till then. 😀

Might be tricky to find 61 keys weighted. Can't remember seeing less than 73 or 76 keys. I recommenced full size if you can, 73 be ok for a while up to a point but 61 can be quite limiting to play 🎹
I have the Roland GO PIANO and it has 61 keys that are synth action keys with 4 layers of touch sensitivity (3 layers and fixed). It is a great little device! However it is not weighted

You either memorise it, or you will have to sight-read while playing.

Yes you can, lots of people do and lots of things we do don't involve sheet music BUT there are definitely lots of benefits to understanding the basics of sheet music to help you learn and understand new music. You don't have to spend a tonne of time getting really good/quick at reading music, that's the hard bit and a long process. But just learning the basics and how to figure something out slowly is much easier
I just started learning a few months ago. Spent the first month doing lessons on the Flowkey app but then began learning ludivine einaudi nuvole bianche. Not reading the music but following along synthesia style. Been playing that for about a month now memorizing how to play it. I feel like when I’m done I’ll have to relearn the things I started off with other than the scales I know. Is that a bad habit to get into from the start?
Funnily enough I just started that with a student the other day (she has been playing a few years though and wanted to learn it) Are you playing the full versions or a simplified version because it may be a little advanced for only a few months for lots of people which could be making it feel harder to memorise. It's in F minor (4 flats) which is likely less familiar to you, it's in a harder time signature too for a beginner and uses bigger hand positions. I do have a video with some memory tips in by the way but here's one. Just try learn really small sections (even a bar or 2 at a time) and really nailing them until you can't forget, before learning the next bit
@@PianoFromScratch I learned the full version. Such a nice sounding piece. It did take a while but I worked at it slow until I got piece by piece. I only have the last little section ending to learn but that’s pretty basic. I play it over and over daily trying to get it smoothly and my speed up. But now after I’m done I feel like I have to start over my learning experience again, do you think it’s ok to learn this way as long as I keep doing the basics again? What’s your opinion on just learning songs using synthesia ?
Ok well done for getting it then! Now you have it, just make sure you play it often enough that you retain it. I might suggest also finding some simpler material and keep up with scales, broken chords etc where it's going to be easier to work on elements of technique more effectively. With simpler stuff too, it's easier to recognise more of the musical language, the chords etc and learn music is put together.
At the end of the day synesthesia videos give you the notes you need...but.. long term it becomes quicker and easier to find out the notes when you learn to read music, plus you can have it in front of you and check any part of it easily.
Also the few of those videos I have seen don't always sound particularly musical if they are programmed and not played. I think a video of seeing someone play as a beginner is useful as you can also see fingers plus how their hands move etc and get some technique pointers
@@PianoFromScratch thanks for the tips. I did watch UA-cam lessons on that song that show the hands playing and the visual bars coming down too. Those are better then the weird sounding versions you mentioned that don’t sound like a real piano. I bought your pdfs on chords and minor scales( I should’ve got the major scale instead) but haven’t actually gone over it much since I’ve been learning this song. The chords pdf was so many pages my printer ran out of ink lol.

Really listening....? I learned " Cristafori's Dream" by David Lantz using A-B repeat on my CD player. I'd listen about 5-10 seconds of the song, duplicate it, (both left and right hands) play it,, then move on. It took about a month, but I did it! I wouldn't recommend this style. It was frustrating at times.

No, not really. There's a lot more than this to get to at some point, I'm really just emphasising making a start on the basics in lots of really important areas of learning an instrument you need
