  • Catherine in Hulu's The Great wears about fifty spectacular dresses, and none of them are the best costume in the show. Let's discuss.

What would also be worth noting that not only is the character of Catherine wealthy enough to commission an entire new wardrobe of maternity clothes, so the visible pregnancy makes sense for her character in that regard, it also works for the character on another level. Whereas pregnancy was a taboo topic in the time period the story is set in, and it would be more socially appropriate to not make her pregnancy so visible, in her context, drawing attention to the pregnancy is, as Elle Fanning mentioned, very useful to Catherine. It works on a plot level because Catherine wants everyone to know she’s pregnant. Her pregnancy keeps Peter under control, and is likely helping her maintain the loyalty of the court and some air of legitimacy to her rule. Wearing clothing that does not disguise or minimise the visual effect of the pregnancy in very much in keeping with how the character used her pregnancy to her advantage. I’m fact, I assumed it was a conscious choice by the costumers to emphasise that part of her character.

Wow, what a plot twist! I could never have guessed that'd be the costume chosen, but that is truly genius, and no, I absolutely did not notice until you pointed it out! I fell in love with the costuming on this show back in season 1, when Peter is going for an early morning jog and they put him in an 18th century looking hoodie. Like, their version of sweats. It's not remarkable at all but I just thought it was so funny and perfectly in line with the whole ethos of the series. To me, it just felt like every single person on the production team being absolutely in on the joke, or like everybody was 100% on the same page about the show they were making. And I couldn't think of any other show or movie that would've simply put the emperor of Russia in a sweatshirt. I was sold.

    1) You've convinced me to check out "the great" TODAY. I'm off work, and my bibging starts now.
    2) and more importantly, THIS is the kind of costumung analysis I live for. Research, and accuracy are amazing tools for a costume designer and their team, but at the end of the day, it MUST serve the story. They knew the assignment here, and clearly worked closely with the rest of production to not just put beautiful and eye-catching historical costumes on screen, but to enhance the meaning of the scenes and to propell the narrative and themes forward.

Please give us more, I’m so ridiculously into 18th and 19th century fashion especially in tv because I adore how they work with actual structure in clothing at the time.

  • @madametaylor625

It is interesting that they didn't just go for like, a robe volante for her, which Sharon Long actually mentions steering away from. I think to modern eyes it would be "frumpy" and they really didn't want that for a young, powerful queen. I did notice that the blue dress where she's sitting under the tree is probably inspired by the traditional Russian sarafan, much like the coronation dress was, just a much softer, pared down version. It kind of makes this comparison between the two heights of her power- as a ruler, and as the mother of an heir. Both are times when she would want to seem as Russian as possible to lend herself legitimacy.

I have to admit that when I first saw this character I immediately thought "wait, are the both pregnant?" but nobody said anything so I brushed it off 🤣 Then I saw the side shot and was very very confused as I am a midwife and I am really used to noticing The Pregnant Woman Walk as it is very unique in how they balance the additional weight. Very glad that I watched your video, thanks for amazing fashion lesson!

Loved this video! I’m a big fan of The Great and a costume design/history student so the minute this video popped up I knew I had to watch it! This was well researched and well scripted and also very appreciative of one of my favourite looks from my favourite character. I had of course considered how Charity’s pregnancy affected George’s plot line in the show (ie. the France trip while she went on maternity leave), but I hadn’t thought about her costumes pre-maternity leave. Loved the build up about historical and modern maternity wear into how the costume department was able to hide Charity’s pregnancy on screen! Amazing video, well done. Huzzah!

OMG I was so excited when I noticed Charity Wakefield was pregnant, I understood the minute they sent her away for several episodes, and rewatched her last scenes and noticed the gown being just slightly bigger. Though I did not know she filmed until 8 months, and honestly would not have suspected she was THIS FAR in her pregnancy.
Thanks so much for explaining how the costume team adapted to make it work. This is first grade quality video and I hope we'll see more of them! It really is such an ironic situation that they kept on showing off a fake pregnancy and then hid another one in plain sight!

Okay having watched the whole video -- The Great's storytelling through the costumes is just phenomenal. I love that the contemporary approach to historical costuming allows for creative liberty while being silhouette-conscious. (I think Hamilton does a great job of this also, given the needs of a theater production.)
I clocked Charity as pregnant on my first viewing, but because of the fullness of her face in closeups! I didn't notice the bump at all xD

Wow! I am IMPRESSED. First, the fact that it was your very first video essay?! I mean, yeah, there are a few things in there that show that (eg some sound levels), but they aren’t impossibly distracting, and while I’d guess “early”, I wouldn’t guess “first”!
Then, as others have mentioned, your personality and enthusiasm for the topic just shine through. You are joy to watch and listen too. And I loved coming along for the lifetime of the curls. 😂 As someone with long straight hair, it was sooooo relatable!
And then there was the content. I’m not really interested in this show. I haven’t had Hulu for years. I am unlikely to get it just to watch this. In all truthfulness, I kind of clicked on this by accident, after watching your video about the tragedy of whatever the hell the modern “American Girl” dolls have become. And I have other things to do and shouldn’t be watching this. But then I just … stayed. Because you were interesting, and talking about something that has interested me for a long time (years of theater, SCA, Dickens Fair, and Renfaire costuming under my literal and figurative belt). Your analysis hit such a sweet spot in the analysis of what made the costuming of this show great, and highlighted both the historical aspects and the practical theater/production aspects. It was especially refreshing to hear you acknowledge all the brilliant work that went into adapting the period costumes and silhouettes to the small screen, because you are spot on that it was BRILLIANT. And not at all the same thing as historical reproduction, which is lovely and wonderful and has its place for sure. I love me some Bernadette Banner-level accuracy! But I also love Bernadette’s playfulness in “recreating” her Aes Sedai blue gown, and having an Only Fans page for Saucy Ankle Content. 😂 I feel you’ve captured that spirit and balance between respect for period fashion and construction and historical accuracy, and understanding that we live in the modern era, with differing needs and restrictions and sensibilities. *chef’s kiss*
I appreciate your appreciation for Outlander costuming, too. Another show that I think, especially in its first couple of years (under the original costume director, who was SPECTACULAR), managed to create a unique aesthetic allowing us to fully experience the fundamental time travel conundrums of the production. (Also, as someone with a lot of Scots heritage, it’s just so great to marinate in the setting, accents, and costuming of the region as well as the eras). But I digress.
I do agree that your thesis - is it ACTUALLY your thesis for school? - was proven completely correct by their treatment of the actual pregnant woman’s costume in the show. I myself sang in an early music group, at a Shakespeare Festival opening gala, while quite pregnant. I assure you I did NOT try to wear any sort of stays! But I did wear a completely period Italian Renaissance gown that was very much an A-line, tent-like affair (borrowed from someone in the SCA, IIRC). Pregnant people existed in history, and they certainly did just keep wearing their clothes, as you correctly point out. It also occurs to me that this may have been, in part, some of the reason for women being “in confinement” at the end of their pregnancy. If you aren’t rich, you may literally have nothing to wear! 😂
Thank you for this video essay, and your enthusiasm. I hope you go on to create many more interesting videos. I don’t know how many I’ll be able to watch, given my own schedule (in grad school for counseling psychology right now). But you have certainly earned my sub, and an enthusiastic round of applause! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

The last look really surprised me but it proves the point so well!
I kinda have this goal that when I one day get pregnant I will wear my ordinary wardrobe with alterations and different styling. I might have to make new pieces, but I’d love for them to actually be possible to alter to my body after as well. It might be a bit of an unattainable goal considering modern styles of clothing, but at least I have the advantage of being able to make my own clothes.

Edit: I love your voice! The expressiveness - beautiful, just beautiful, it keeps a viewer in the narration, very attention grabbing. Sometimes the text is good, but the presentation is not great, but your presentation is also good, you sound like a good teacher or a journalist presenter. Clear anounciation, the rhythm - lovely, AND the emotions - contagious. Very nice, love it.
This is a great video, great content, you are great. I'm truly enjoying your voice, your presentation. It's just as I'm watching this video, I'm noticing some details. This is an opinion of a random viewer, it's not really important for the channel, you'll probably ignore it even if you read it, which is fine, but here it is.
You dark dress blends with the couch/armchair. It's a lovely dress, i agree with you 100%, it's just a visual impression of both these items in the video frame. You may want to choose something which is more visible on that background. Or change the background to show off the dress! (Cover the armchair with a light-could blanket maybe)
And, as a librarian, I was creeped out by the books. Books standing with their wedge towards the viewer instead of their spines being visible. Very unsettling. It's not a crime, lol, but it's an odd choice.
If you don't like how your books look, may I suggest designing and printing dusters, paper covers for all the books to make their outer design cohesive. I'd design a universal template for different sizes and write in authors and titles by hand. You can use wrapping paper, designer paper or even wallpaper.
Again, your choices are yours, these are just a passer's by suggestions.
