If you tightlace a stay or sewn eyelet corset the fabric will rip. There were also maternity stays/corsets that were built to help support the belly- much like maternity bands and kt tape is used today.

I think his saving Grace was that he was self aware enough to realize he was an abusive dick and that would get him no where but murdered with a wife like that. 💀 Everyone else just took it because that is all they had known and felt a strange comfort with it. She being new to all of it and hating it rejected it, wanting her old standard of living back. And because he was the main one in the way, she knew he had to be dealt with. Thus leading to the girl he thought of as more of an innocent puppy he could abuse as he pleased to become his undoing, something he didn't really think was possible and thus entertained him. Which lead to him realizing that she will kill him for what he does to people and that he'd rather be alive to continue being entertained by her. Edit: Meaning he is an abuser who did actually realize he should just stop. Which is what makes it so refreshing for people as IRL that never really happens and especially not in an even remotely satisfying way. And it's honestly not very common in media either, particularly the types that DO romanticize abusive relationships. This is a situation where one person had to make due with the cards they were dealt and did infact get several (illegal for us) blows in, then the other just slowly realized they were a jackass. And more importantly she ALWAYS acknowledged what he had done and that it was wrong, she never excused ANY of his behaviors towards ANYONE. She was just stuck with him and not a particularly abusive or hateful person herself.
