I always assumed Boardwalk Empire faded in the cultural memory because its particular niche (1920 mafia drama) was quickly replaced and surpassed by Peaky Blinders, a show with a much more ionic lead in Thomas Shelby. Though my Cillian Murphy bias could be showing in that assessment.

Your breakdown of why the opening credits/theme song of a show is so important hit on something I've always felt but never articulated. I never skip opening credits, even though most people I watch shows with get tired of watching them/find them annoying after a while.
A good opening credits sequence is crafted as the tone setter for the show and mentally prepares the viewer for the episode. I don't think repetition diminishes its power, even though some people find it tiresome. As you said, the more it is repeated, the stronger and more automatic its effects become.
While you were explaining, the first opening credits sequence that jumped to mind was actually that of the short-lived Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. I had never considered it a particularly memorable or important part of the show (which I adore) but this line of reasoning immediately recalled it for me. It truly got me in the mood to watch far better than any of the cold opens did. That's the power of a good theme. "Livin' on the edge, fightin' crime, spinnin' webs" 🤘

Ur Tony rant about award shows not being genuine is so true and reminded me most of all of how the Oscars consistently every year when bringing up the best animated category makes jokes about how silly it is or how the voters must have let their kids vote on it bc surely no one could take animated films seriously. ugh

this is such a fantastically detailed panoramic sweep of pop culture in 2013 through these brief dance numbers that it rly makes the case for why award shows should actually celebrate the work they're purporting to reward. now i'm wondering if deep diving into any sections of award shows from the past like 5 years would even offer similar insight into the year of production, safe for the actual noms/winners list. and thank you for pointing out that wasn't break dancing, it was driving me insane lol
(1:25:21 amused that this actress demands to see the "people being honored" instead of the dance number that is choreographed and performed by industry veterans who Are Nominated lmao)

1:33:20 As someone in the dancer community, 100% there was some thinly veiled racism that was going on, and I'm glad you brought it up. There is a level of prestige (and respect) often afforded to classical "western" styles like ballet that a lot of people (especially non dancers) do not afford to styles like hip hop, breaking, krump, dancehall, etc. And a lot of that attitude can be traced to the cultural/communal roots which those styles pull from and certain... presumptions about the demographics they are associated with.

Hello! Regarding your American Horror Story section: the figures dressed in black are actually a reference to a character in Season 1 of AHS called the Rubber Man. I can't speak to it anymore because I haven't watched AHS since ~ season 6, but because of the nature of this show (anthology with a new setting every season), the fandom would dissect these promo teasers to determine what the season would be about, and it was a huge part of the fandom, at least when I was part of it. Because of that, the images used in this dance number are immediately identifiable to a fan of the show, and are just as iconic as what you were describing for the GoT sequence. I would argue that this imagery is actually more recognizable than if they attempted to represent the actual characters from that season because of the culture surrounding the show.

I miss proper theme songs and longer tv intros so much. All you get now is 10 second title sequences with the show’s title and almost nothing else, which definitely suits some shows! But some others it’s like c’mon you could do so much better. Good Omens is a great example of a good intro because it’s full of so much stuff that seems like just random nonsense on first watch but each time you watch it you start to notice that it’s not random nonsense, they’re foreshadowing the events of the show and it’s so fun to watch

That reincorporation of the BB theme at the end of Granite State sends palpable chills down my spine every single time!! It's my favorite episode for that reason, and it wouldn't have a tenth of the impact if they'd sprinkled it throughout the show just to be like, "remember what show you're watching?" Love the discussion of TV themes; it's such an important art form and when there's a good one it's a good sign that people have thought through how their art will be presented, rather than just churning out content.

Something similar happened a couple of times for the Oscars in the 90s, except since they don't have an award for choreography they instead had the dance numbers accompanied by the score nominees. There were also not received well, which for the Saving Private Ryan tap dance, that's fair. But if you criticise the Men in Black dance, I gotta say you must not like fun.

The arms are viscerally upsetting because they evoke the nightmare sequence from Toy Story 2 when Woody is dreaming about falling into a trash can full of amputated toy arms.

RJD2 has a wonderful song called Doin' It Right that is one of my most listened to songs of all time, crazy that he's responsible for the Mad Men theme

American Horror Story Asylum was my favorite of the series that I have seen so far. It was amazing. If you like horror and mind twisting discomfort from things close to the truth. It really succeeds and is fantastic.

I remember watching the Emmys and enjoying that performance, actually. I was really surprised not everyone actually like it. Then again, I was in college, and was too busy to read up on entertainment news.
