- Heather Lawson was born deaf and as she grew up she started losing her sight. She could cope as a blind person but wasn't sure how she could cope with being deaf and blind. This is her story and how she not only copes with her disabilities but how she makes the most of life.

How amazing! She's so lucky to be born in a developed country. As a colombiana, I imagine there must be many folk in Latin America who have these disabilities but don't get the help they need.
Watching this and just thinking how amazing it is that as human beings we will always find a way to communicate! Truly inspirational
It's so cool, isn't it? I just looked up deaf and blind on UA-cam to see how you could communicate being deaf and blind. Didn't consider feeling peoples signs as a possibility. So interesting!

Her perseverance is nothing short of miraculous and a catalyst for appreciating my own blessings. Unfortunately, we are all frailer than we think. It's a sobering reality that people are coping with such significant impairments, but it is a source of encouragement that she navigates through life despite her limitations. May God bless her with His grace, mercy, and protection throughout her life.
This woman is very AMAZING. She is living a very productive life. She's doing Good things, like Clay work, exercise, skydiving, and even Advocating for deaf and blind People's Rights. She has alot more Courage than most seeing, hearing people have. She is an INSPIRATION! 🧡❤️💜🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Kids can be so cruel? Why? I have five grandchildren, and they would never think to tease anyone that was less fortunate than them. In fact they welcomed them with their heart and want to be their friends. We have a zero tolerance for bullying in our family.
Their behaviors are usually acquired from their parents, so their parents can take the blame for not raising them right. Sad that other children have to face the consequences of the parents actions, and I agree that any awful behavior shouldn’t be tolerated

When I was a kid, I’d laugh at people with Down syndrome. Kids just don’t know what they’re doing and the effects caused by bullying.
@@kurosakiichigo7475 Actually they do. They arent taught respect at home or those who are sometimes refuse to listen.
Watching this made me felt thankful to be able to see and hear like normal people. I wish her the best, she is strong woman, she deserve a respect and all happiness in the world.

Deaf people are normal people. So are blind people. It’s insulting to call them abnormal.
@@Mitchaitea do you know what normal means? It is normal for humans to hear and see so the majority of us do. It is abnormal to have a rare condition (emphasis on rare) that causes one to be disabled. It doesn’t make them less human or worthy of all that they desire out of life but it is abnormal and different.

This is admirable. I myself could never trust solely on other humans. But that's just my trust issues. I couldn't rely that they'd do right by me, when I didn't know where I was or coudln't communicate. I would just be so completely lost and unsure.

This is very informative, thank you for sharing this story with us, it keeps us aware of how diverse we are in the world and how people with disabilities go about their lives. However, i think that this clip has excluded deaf people from watching especially given that it is about a person who is not only deaf but blind as well,it should have been more inclusive, like adding closed captions. I hope you have gotten more knowledge and are more inclusive now since the day of publication of this video.

It's awesome that she keeps pushing on and never gives up fighting to live and to get rights and more accessibility for other people dealing with the same struggles. I hope that globally our society can become more accessible for all people!

As someone losing hearing under like UsHERs (I have the gene nd dad had Ushers) but my sight isn’t acting like RP yet. I am sorry yet happy to find another Usher patient. I am 52. I Comes now read with glasses. I hve a Cochkear bone implant on my left ear…lost that hearing immediately🎉ly in 2008. Since then I developedANOTHER RP shortened illness … this time relapsing polychondritis. That disease destroys the cartilage in my cancel and it is robbing me of m remaining good hearing. I rem in mental destroyed by these diagnoses. When my dad was diagnosed in mid forties, it roomed my entire childhood. I lost my dad after he was diagnoses.

We normal people should learn from these special people whenever we are loosing in our life .
Well she is lucky to get grt supportive opportunities in Australia their are many who can't get such.
Our bodies should have last ditch efforts to sense our environment and danger around us. Like how tarantulas sense other animals and the world through sense of touch by feeling the air and vibrations on the ground. That would be extremely useful.

Being deaf is perfectly normal for this woman because she's been deaf her whole life. It's being blind she has to get used to but I have an extended family member who went blind as an adult 15 years ago and she is always happy and social. You just have to learn to live your life

I know there is a lot of pride within the deaf community and a lot of deaf people do not want cochlear implants or hearing aids even when they are available. But if you are not only deaf but also blind, I would think you would want whatever assistance you can get? But she seems pretty content without them, so I guess not?
Not buying it. She could see when the man turned and looked at her because she immediately signaled that she wants to go across the street when she SAW that he turned toward her. She obviously knew when her niece was walking around then pretended to not see her.
I understand what you mean. However, people who are blind often have a small amount of usable sight. Sometimes this can mean they can only see shadows. This would be like being in a room with the curtains closed and the lights turned off, there is no visible color in the darkness but there is just enough light to see the movement of a person or a pet. Sometimes the field of vision is very small like looking through a straw. Individuals with this extremely limited sight are considered blind because this small amount of vision is not enough for them to be able to drive a car or go places on their own without the assistance of a guide whether that is a guide dog or a person. Complete blindness when there is no sight at all is extremely rare.
@@atc35012 I appreciate your reply. I would consider what you are saying if the documentary said that her sight was blurry. The documentary claims she is blind. That mean she can't see enough to recognize anything, like the faces she puts on her canes. @20:18 Quoting the documentary.. "Sometimes if I felt really flat or bored or sad, I would LOOK at golfie and it would.. I would LOOK in the corner and it would make me feel better."

Saying 'if I was like you I'd have ended my life' is like saying their life isn't worth living. Don't ever say this to another person ever again, it is incredibly disrespectful and hurtful. Even if it wasn't your intention.
@@IschysSyrra but it’s true… if i was in the same position i’d probably want to kill my self too it’s not saying their life is not worth living it’s saying that my life would not be worth living if that happened to me… i would basically loose everything that i cared about like talking to my family and seeing them and she found a way around it and is living a good life but if i was in that position i wouldn’t so i would as sad as it is probably not want to live anymore
I would be super depressed if I went blind , imagine blind and deaf , however I will keep moving forward, sure I will miss out on lots of things but that's ok. Life is more than just seeing :). ( my vision has rapidly been getting worse and I may go blind )

@@idk-6816 Even if the person is completely deaf or their nerves to their ears are destroyed?
@@philipmrch8326 I think cochlear implants can help them to sense some sounds, but I’m not sure that works for everyone since I read it is necessary to do many tests to find out if a person is a good candidate.
