  • Hi, is your Czech improving nicely? I am sure it is! So, it is time to learn how to form the past tense. Do not worry it is not very difficult.
    All we need to do is find the infinitive of the verb, remove the final 't', replace it with an 'l', possibly add an 'a', an 'o', or an 'i' - depending on if the past action was done my something feminine, neuter or plural. After this for I, you, we, and you plural we just as the corresponding present form of the verb 'to be'. That is it!
    Honestly, it is simple!
    Good luck and thanks for watching!

    Hi Rich ! Thank you so much for your nice lessons . I 'm French and I started learning Czech Last october because I went to Prague with my son who played hockey with his team. I've got a grammar and vocabulary book and my son's coach is from Slovakia so he's able to speak Czech and he often helps me when I've got problems or questions . I like learning czech a lot and I want to tell you that your lessons have been a great help so far. They are clear and very pleasant to watch, you are definitely a good teacher ! and I know what I'm talking about, I've been working as an english teacher in France for 23 years ! so, keep up the good work and thanks again . Fred

    Hi Rich, the right term for "supporting" verb is "auxiliary" verb. Thanks for the lesson!

    • @LearnCzechwithRich
      @LearnCzechwithRich  9 років тому +5

      Hi Frank, thanks for that. I am familiar with the term "auxiliary", I used to use it when teaching but I was often met with blank expressions on my students faces, so I decided to use the term "supporting" which is more accessible for non linguists.

    Good videos! What I would request, though, are some examples, sentences were you use what you have been going through in the lesson. Do you adress this in other videos? Moc dêkuju! Keep up the good work :)

    If the "we" is feminine, is the ending not changed, ie, hrály jsme?

    Ahoj Rich! In present tense we decline the verbs depending on their endings and they form four groups. So, I would like to know if do this apply in the past tense? Or it doesn´t matter and is the same rule of remove "t" for at, át,ovat, ít, ýt, it, et endings? Díky!

      Hi Gwen, I will do another video giving more examples and some extra details probably next weekend. However, just so you know, it is not like the present, in the past always go back to the infinitive, remove the final 't' and replace in with 'l'. There are of course a few exceptions where you need to create a slightly different form to the past without 't' but I will look at some of them specifically. Basically it is easier than present tense :) apart from a few word order issues that I will highlight in the next lesson.
      So take another example, the verb to need:
      potřebovat = to need
      potřebuju = I need
      potřeboval jsem = I needed (for a man)
      potřebovala jsem = I needed (for a woman)
      Hope this helps
      Rich

    ciekawe że u was sie mowi: hral jsem where we make one word out of it,
    i played grałem
    he played grał
    she played grała
    neutral grało
    I could probably learn czech in 2 or 3 weeks since i already speak Polish and Russian. Uh.. But i don't need to since the last time i went to prague i could speak normally with the locals without many difficulties since polish and czech are pretty mutually intelligible. Anyway nice vid breh.

    how do i say i used to play hockey?
    hral jsem hokej?
    jsem bil hokejsty?

    • @LearnCzechwithRich
      @LearnCzechwithRich  8 років тому +7

      Walter White Hi, I hope the following helps :)
      I used to play hockey - Hrával jsem hokej.
      Hrál is just simple past tense, e.g. Hrál jsem včera hokej - I played hockey yesterday. Hrával means sometime in the past for a longer period. I'd say the exact translation is Hrával / used to play.
      I was a hockey player - Byl jsem hokejista.
