  • World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defends his title against challenger Fabiano Caruana of the United States in Game 12 of the 2018 World Chess Championship match that is being held in London. It's a best of 12 games where the first player to earn 6.5 points earns the lion's share of a $1.14 million prize pool, and the title of "World Chess Champion". Both players entered game 12 tied with 5.5 points each. For a 3rd time in the match, we have a Sicilian Defense, Sveshnikov variation. Unlike game 10 of this match however, Carlsen is the one to deviate first with his 8th move, Ne7. The position of Carlsen's knight primarily impacts not only Caruana's kingside, but also his king's address. Just as we witnessed in game 1, we experience in this game 12 a case of opposite sides castling. Whose king would be the more vulnerable? Win game 12, and you become World Chess Champion!

      That "maybe" is the most cautious of maybes i've ever seen, we've seen Carlsen try and push out for a win in endgames where everyone saw nothing but a dead end, and there, in an aggressive position, with the clock advantage, with ALL pieces still present he goes for a draw ? Very little doubt remains in my opinion.

    • @kafkaesquee521
      @kafkaesquee521 5 років тому +6

      0077725 No it is a shocking draw offer. Anyone who knows chess can see that. Even if it is going to be draw at the end, what harm there is to play a couple more moves like jerry said. Caruana has 9 min to make 9 moves, there is a good chance he will make a mistake.
      Caruana himself said he was surprised by the draw offer.

    • @0077725
      @0077725 5 років тому

      @@kafkaesquee521 Well clearly the best chess player in the known universe disagrees with you. And what harm is there? Losing the world championship - that's a pretty big harm if you ask me. And clearly you either don't follow chess that closely or know very little about Caruana - there is very rarely a "good chance that he will make a mistake". If he thinks that not much is on at any point, he would just make a slightly developmental/passing move. It may have been an unusual draw offer, but to call it shocking is naïve. Unless of course you have a series of moves that black could have played that would result in a favourable outcome - care to share what they are? Didn't think so.

    • @Kamrul-ITManager
      @Kamrul-ITManager 5 років тому

      @@0077725 Yap bro, may be the word shocking is not appropriate for this game, perhaps surprising can be ok :) While I was viewing the game When Jerry said after this move Carlsen offered a draw that time I was surprised :) I felt it wasn't the right time for offering draw and I am sure the major percentage of chess players will be agree with me on this. I am supporting Carlsen, may be that's the reason why I am unhappy with this draw. Whatever, considering the position and time, it's not that easy to make slightly passing moves to reach for time control. Carlsen could push few more moves to test Caruana, with mental pressure any human player can do mistake in chess. If Caruana loose then his dream is down, this tension wasn't that easy for choosing correct 9 moves when you have only 8 minutes to go.

    • @SynsityGW
      @SynsityGW 5 років тому +4

      Yup, I agree. This is the problem. By now I think rapid/blitz are more interesting forms of chess. But this is the world chess championship. It has always been a classical chess championship and it should continue to be. The rapid games are the reason that Magnus feels no need to even attempt a win in a winning position in the final game of a tied championship. FIDE is idiotic for putting the match in this position. You just put your world champion in a position where he WANTED to draw every single game of the championship and did a huge, huge disservice to the chess world. Their incompetence lingers on through the years, presumably through many different cycles of leadership. Miraculous.

      On one hand I understand why he did it. He knows he has a much, much better chance in speed chess against Caruana so why bother pushing a risky attack in game 12 when you can just go straight into speed chess and retain your title? That said, this displays yet again a lack of killer instinct for Carlsen and while it helps Carlsen's legacy and position as champion, it does a disservice to the chess world as a whole.

    • @FreshHas

      @@SynsityGW Well like you said, why risk something in game 12 in a championship? Carlsen's draw offer was the more prudent course of action. It's just one of the things that happens in these situations. People shouldn't forget that Carlsen has shown a tenacity for squeezing victories out of seemingly deadlocked endgames and definitely is a fighter. It's just natural for people to play more cautiously in championship games. Of course we want to see blood but these players, hellbent on winning above all, tread with caution. I would wager a vast majority of top contenders would have done the same in Carlsen's shoes, so people shouldn't really fault him in particular.

      It only happens because FIDE thought it wise to have the tiebreaks be rapid/blitz games. They put the world champion in a position where an ideal scenario is 12 draws. This is on them. This whole mess is their fault for making the competitors play speed chess in what has always been a classical chess match.

If the clock goes down to zero in one game that game is lost, but can still pull it off in the rest of the games. In the unlikely scenario they are still tied (g.e., 2 wins 2 losses) new round of simultaneous games next day.

    Magnus has always talked about chess like is war and you must destroy your opponents. The way he offered a Draw makes people to believe he is contradicting himself. People demanded more exciting Chess but theres too many angles to this situation. Carlsen may be thinking "shit, we are playing engine lines, our games are so perfect this is boring." And maybe he just want to crush Caruana but cant. And that maybe the best outcome is to show dominance in shorter time chess rather than only winning by time trouble 1 win and 11 draws.
    ADD: MAYBE WE ARE REACHING THE LIMITS OF CHESS. Video killed the radio stars. God is dead and we killed him. Engines killed Tal.

    I entered this position into Chessmaster 10, not the strongest engine but still pretty tough at 2980, Chessmaster gave this position a -.06 evaluation, virtually tied, and played it out to a draw after 19 more moves by 3-fold repetition, looking at 100 million positions per move. These guys are so good that I believe they knew that it this was a drawn position.

  • @dragonsfart
    @dragonsfart 5 років тому

    While I understand Carlsen's motivation for proposing the draw and Caruana's reason for accepting, the position and the time advantage was all on Carlsen's side. We're talking about the World Championship here; champions are not supposed to play it safe in a winner-take-all situation; they are supposed to show the killer instinct that all champions are driven by at their core. Here was Carlsen's chance for a crushing victory (yes, no guarantee of it but that's entirely up to him).
    That said, the consistency of the high level of chess these guys have shown in this tournament has been incredible, but there have been few times where a champion's "killer instinct" (or it's corollary, the desperate "fight for survival") was shown. This really has been simply two technically perfect opponents playing each other, with no prize being challenged or defended.
    BTW, I'm definitely not a great (or even a good) chess player, but when I play, I play to win, not draw. Perhaps that's why I find this Game 12 disappointing.

    The American Chess Congress was the official sponsor of the BOBBY FISCHER INT’L CHESS PARK proposed to be built in Santa Monica to honor the only American to have won the World Chess Championship. Bobby had an impressive career and for many is considered the greatest in chess. He began to study chess at the age of six and became a voracious student of the game. Fischer won the United States Chess Championship at the age of fourteen and at fifteen became the youngest Grandmaster at that time. In two consecutive years, he won the United States Chess Championship with a perfect score and has held the title eight times. In 1972, he captured the World Chess Championship with a decisive lead. In 1975, the Soviets and the International Chess Federation [FIDE] claimed the title on forfeiture in what is still a controversial issue and thus began the FIDE World Chess Championship. In 1992, Fischer emerged to play a rematch for the real title and won in good fashion. He died in 2008.
    The chess tables at the foot of the pier in Santa Monica, California are known of internationally. It was the former site of the old Santa Monica Bay Chess Club. Bobby first played in Santa Monica during the Piatigorsky Cup [a strong international tournament] in 1966. When Fischer lived in Pasadena in the late eighties, he would delight many with his visits to the tables. For these reasons, the tables have been selected to honor a great American chess hero.

  • @glaucosaraiva363
    @glaucosaraiva363 5 років тому

    Perhaps it would be better for white, at move 14, instead of moving the queen back to b4 to go to a3. In this way, the queen would continue to put pressure on d6 and laterally would exert more influence protecting the sensitive square d3 for a future exchange of light square bishops, since this piece is one of the best black pieces. On b4 she is laterally obstructed by the pawn on c4.

    Man, that title was SO CLOSE to being a spoiler. I made sure not to scroll down at all until 22:41.
    I feel like the draw offer from Carlsen makes sense. Sure with the position and the clock sitch he might have gotten some lucky breaks, but from what I understand he's an absolute monster with short time controls compared to Caruana, so why play more moves here for a chance rather than go to blitz for a dead cert?
    Also, thinking on it more, the timing makes a LOT of sense. Caruana would receive that offer looking at his clock, and be much more likely to accept it. If they were in such an even position at move 41 with plenty of time left, I think Caruana might have rejected the offer.

    I was always rooting for Caruana, because I have some sort of underdog syndrome, but all this hate towards Magnus is very perplexing to me. Chess is a game of strategy first and tactics second, the META-game cannot be ignored by some of the greatest minds in strategy, i.e. the world chess champion.
    He is favored to win the tie-breaker, besides that he is actually up against his closest matchup in his entire championship career - which is to say that Caruana is the biggest threat Magnus has had so far.
    He's not being a coward by utilizing strategic advantages. You can hate the player - but the problem lies in the game. I am rooting for Caruana, but I completely empathize with and understand Carlsen.

    Everyone is quite annoyed at Carlsen's draw decision. I dare to say that there is a provoker inside him, it was a provocative move to the whole world of chess. And yet he remains in control. In the end, he's keeping his crown by the rules (if he wins, of course). Psychologically Magnus has now a clear upper hand over Fabio, as if giving him another chance, telling him to try harder..quite cruel, like a cat with a mouse.
