  • Facilitated Communication training is widely used by people with a variety of communication handicaps, including non-verbal autistics, to help them find their voice, the ability to communicate, frequently through the method known as supported typing.
The objective of FC is to take these people trapped in their own bodies from an uncommunicative state to a place where, with the support of a trained facilitator, they have the ability to "talk" through a computer keyboard or other Assistive Technology (AT) device.

0:57-1:03: The young man starts to press keys all by himself while the facilitator is momentarily distracted. The facilitator then uses force to regain control of his hand. The method might have some value for physically/neurologically impaired people with limited motor control, but what we see here seems to be make-belief pure and simple.

    "Supported Typing" AKA "Forced Typing"

One guy is independent with pressing buttons but interestingly he can't type a word by himself. So many examples of where they are not looking at the keyboard yet still typing one fingered. Despite my ability with touch typing, I was unable to type this with one finger! I also don't understand why all these people are going with typing when complex symbol based systems use less key strokes to per message I do believe in assuming competence and responding to all communication attempts whether intentional or not (as we do with babies) and I have also used hand over hand with voice to demonstrate to a child what they could say with a device. I am sure FC may work with a small number of people but it has been shown to be harmful, so I will never suggest it.

It is obvious that the facilitators are moving the hands of these people. One is tapping the same key with his other hand, one is looking away. It is also ludicrous to think these severely disabled people could type anything intelible with all the distraction going on in that room.

People who have never been taught to read or write suddenly know how to spell words and form sentences. Sure. I wonder how much money is going to this nonsense.
      This is sick.

Ou, they make plenty of money, because the facilitators write books for them. FC "users" always do the same 3 things: their very first message is an outpouring of love to mom and dad, their second is to "write" a book about their life and finally - accuse a parent or caregiver of sex abuse.

yes, in that year the Frontline documentary Prisoners of Silence came out totally disproving FC. How totally delusional do you have to be to a FC facilliator in this day and age.

I'm sorry, this is just very sad stuff. Of course it would be wonderful if profoundly impaired people could use this method to communicate, and of course it's easy to empathize with the facilitators and family members who wish that was so. But, even if they don't realize it (re. the ideomotor effect, confirmation bias, etc.) these people are using their communication partner's hands as ouija planchettes. They've reinvented the 19th century seance.

This even LOOKS silly! I mean, are the people behind FC mind-readers, all of a sudden?
    NOT LIKELY
So how would THEY KNOW what the "right" keys to push are for someone? To even THINK this is remotely-accurate is incredibly ludicrous

0:07 makes it clear this is fake. The fellow is looking away while his "facilitator", unaware that he has turned his head, is still typing.

+wrlord It is the soul of the individual that causes the letters to be selected. We are talking a way to contact the spiritual side of the individual, not the physical. I remember one individual who was facilitated looking up. He was asked: What are you looking at? He answered, I like to watch the angles.

This is so sad- the evidence against FC is overwhelming and yet 20 years later people are still promoting it. This is frankly unethical. It is impossible to type with one finger without looking at the keyboard. The only person looking at the keyboard here is the facilitator. This is NOT real communication, this is the facilitator putting words into the child/adolescents mouth. Do the research- FC does NOT work.

No.. autistics aren't locked in. Autistics typically have reasonable control of their motor functions.
Basically, all you'd need is a pillow-spacer above and in front of the keybooard or touch-screen to support the wrists of some users.. otherwise these facilitators are useless -- at best.

Crazy how 99% of the time they are "assisted" typing while looking anywhere EXCEPT the keyboard. I could not type with 1 finger on a keyboard without looking at it and I have no disability. Also, you can see the "facilitator" is the only one looking at the keyboard when typing is happening 100% of the time. Especially the dark haired shoulder length woman and the boy, both facing the camera . Sad living in a world of make-believe
