Neurologic Music Therapy Workshop
Saved by Typing is committed to:
1. Increase public awareness of the competence of autistic individuals especially the nonverbal assumed to be incompetent. We believe they should be treated with equal dignity and afforded the same opportunities for health care and education;
2. Assist individuals on the autism spectrum to have access to improved quality of life in areas of emotional, social and medical care in family and community environments, while respecting their movement differences;
3. Provide qualified training with proven standards and protocols to move some individuals to independence and enhance the communication abilities of others at home, with doctors, and in the community.
It is estimated that as many as 25 percent of individuals living with autism spectrum disorders are non-verbal. That is, they cannot functionally communicate with others using their voice. Despite that substantial fraction, we still know very little about these individuals, their abilities, and their needs.
These persons are found to be highly intelligent and able to express all emotions once communication is established. This population is under-served and often regarded as incompetent by the untrained. We seek to end this isolation and pain.
Saved By Typing is structured with the collaboration and support of family members and trained support personnel who have need of more training.

    Crazy how 99% of the time they are "assisted" typing while looking anywhere EXCEPT the keyboard. I could not type with 1 finger on a keyboard without looking at it and I have no disability. Also, you can see the "facilitator" is the only one looking at the keyboard when typing is happening 100% of the time. Especially the dark haired shoulder length woman and the boy, both facing the camera . Sad living in a world of make-believe

    0:57-1:03: The young man starts to press keys all by himself while the facilitator is momentarily distracted. The facilitator then uses force to regain control of his hand. The method might have some value for physically/neurologically impaired people with limited motor control, but what we see here seems to be make-belief pure and simple.

    I'm sorry, this is just very sad stuff. Of course it would be wonderful if profoundly impaired people could use this method to communicate, and of course it's easy to empathize with the facilitators and family members who wish that was so. But, even if they don't realize it (re. the ideomotor effect, confirmation bias, etc.) these people are using their communication partner's hands as ouija planchettes. They've reinvented the 19th century seance.

    the disabled individual often is looking completely away from the keyboard while typing with one hand (absolutely impossible, even for typing experts, one needs to situate themselves on a keyboard to be able to type eyes closed) while the facilitator is always staring directly at the keyboard. why do people still believe in this? I have a loy of contempt for facilitators who make a living doing this. they are essentially using a human being as a puppet, and the family is often none the wiser. if you are a facilitator and believe this is working, please do some extensive research and then attempt to do some double blind tests and really ask yourself whether or not you're kidding yourself. humans lie to each other and to themselves all the time, and sometimes a lie gets so out of hand that all those involves forget it's a lie. I feel bad for these disabled individuals as they are being used in a very abusive way with FC.

  • @oliviajeske6287
    @oliviajeske6287 9 років тому

    This is so sad- the evidence against FC is overwhelming and yet 20 years later people are still promoting it. This is frankly unethical. It is impossible to type with one finger without looking at the keyboard. The only person looking at the keyboard here is the facilitator. This is NOT real communication, this is the facilitator putting words into the child/adolescents mouth. Do the research- FC does NOT work.

      No.. autistics aren't locked in. Autistics typically have reasonable control of their motor functions. Basically, all you'd need is a pillow-spacer above and in front of the keybooard or touch-screen to support the wrists of some users.. otherwise these facilitators are useless -- at best.
