Sometimes, us adults just need a... VIOLENT BREAK.
And commit a... VIOLENT PUNISH
nice one
😂😂😂😂🤘🏾🤘🏾🔥🔥🔥👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 so TRUE
@@haxingorPOL thats what i did to my annoing classmade
True
I actually want more mature Kamen Rider shows. Doesn't have to be a reimagining of an existing character and story but rather create an original story with some elements inspired by existing Rider stories.
And get rid of those belts that are obvious toy gimmicks. Or at the very least just make it look like an actual tool and not a toy
I think Kuuga really got sweet spot tone for what I’d like a kamen rider show to be. Where it’s adult where it needs to be and silly where it needs to be
I’d say that Kuuga is pretty mature IMO 👍
I would love to see a more mature re-imagining of one of the newer riders myself
sure we have more dramatic and serious seasons like Gaim, but I wanna see how far one could push mature dramatic storytelling while operating inside the framework of a collectable toy-based gimmick
I think some interesting territory could be entered via really thematically considering the purpose of whatever selected toy-based gimmick the series has
I nominate OOO for this treatment, since I'm sure whatever dark version of a heisei phase 2 / reiwa would have to contend with greed as a theme anyway
Agito was pretty mature IMO
The real question is why do these adult toku series have to be reimaginings of older properties. We need more like Garo; adult-oriented toku shows that are their own thing and not tied to any preexisting IP.
Branding is important
Cause at the end of the day studios want to make more money with little risk. It's easier to market a new adult kamen rider because people already have an idea of what they're in for.
Toku is hard to fund without toy sales, which series for older audiences don't really sell. Garo only lasted as long as it did because it had a really popular pachinko game. So that's why there's not that much original adult toku and why they tend to not be that many episodes.
@@Extra47 which is funny because adults are the only ones with the funds to really buy toys
Ask shirakura.
For me the problem lies within "In Your Face" treatment of the adult toku genre. Makers think that just showing some gore and blood will make the show "Adult" content. The things need to be subtle. My first series was build and to this date it's most mature series I've seen. Things like Political Division, Capitalism, Civil War, Class divide and Poverty were discussed in a very subtle and mature manner(People might disagree with me). That's what i consider mature content not adult. Things need to be "Subtly Mature" not "Aggressively Adult"
Build seems it would be my cup of tea.
Subtle doesn’t get viewers
You can say the same thing about Amazons. It has conflict of morality, class/race division, slavery, MC's struggling to retain his humanity while fighting for what is right, peaceful monsters who tried to live peacefully with human, and human who are even more monstrous than the monster they created.
The Blood and gore are there to complement the mature theme. I saw Amazon and never once did I think the makers thought just putting gore on it is enough to carry the show. The show was able to explore the theme they did because of the adult rating.
You could blame shirakura for that. He produced the first season of amazons, and black sun.
Nope fuck that. Then you will get current marvel stuff. Just with kamen rider.
I definitely count Akibaranger as an adult show, considering the level of innuendo, adult jokes and the fact that the villains in S2 do the deed.
well obviously every toku I enjoy is for adults because I am very cool and mature and definitely not insecure about watching shows for children
I’d honestly love a Kuuga reboot that takes inspiration from the manga.
A sequel to Kuuga that integrates both Kuuga and Agito elements like in the manga would be incredible
We need another Garo series. Vanishing Line is not just my favorite entry in the series but also one of my favorite anime of all time and I want to see where the story goes from there.
Versus Road Season 2? When? Also, anyone know where I can find Dragon Blood online?
My favorite timeline is the only one with a downer ending as far as I'm aware so idk about all that 😭
@@Terry.sd_Whittlewe got ryuga dougai continuation instead 😢 WHEN IS IT EVEN ENDING?!
This is the kind of discussion we need to have here with regards to Western Toku fandom. Kids toku and adult toku are both valid and deserve to be in the zeitgeist. As you and the team mentioned, that risk for adult re-imaginings to overshadow the originals is definitely there, but that's for sure thanks to the lack of Showa Toku history in North America. Shin Ultraman won't overshadow the original Ultraman in Japan obviously since it won't be hard to find the show in Japan (in either video or streaming), but for us here in the States? Well, thanks to Mill Creek and Shout, that problem won't be as pronounced. KR on the other hand is another story (but thanks to Discotek, at least there's legal means for anyone here in the States to dip their toes in KR Black with regards to KR Black Sun). Nice editing for this video and good chat overall gang!
14:13 I kinda agree with you here from my own personal experience. A while back I managed to get some of my friends to watch Kamen Rider Amazons. They were all interested by the concept, and one of them binged season 1 with his own friend group and loved it. To the point where he himself saw other seasons like Kuuga or Zero One, and even Shin Kamen Rider on opening night.
As someone whose shepherded multiple people into the world of Tokusatsu, I've found they all followed a similar journey.
They get burnt out on Marvel and Star Wars and AAA western games, start to feel like they're just getting grumpy or old, stop getting excited for things, and then that She-Hulk vs Geats twerking meme gets them to ask me for context, since I'm that 'Power Rangers guy'.
Every time, the thing that gets them watching and becoming fans is the same thing. Earnestness. People have generally been willing to overlook awful CGI and some cheap props and a lot of empty car parking lot fight scenes because the show their watching seems genuine and passionate.
Sounds like their problem of not branching out of the popular schlock.
@@wah3865 Well thats what they did in the end.
I think the reason why “adult”-type media of something for young demographics don’t work, is because the writers believe they HAVE to have everything be 18+. Despite adults are (probably) already watching shows and movies for younger viewers. Even in “kid”-type media, there are dark moments throughout. Amazons S1 worked for me, because the writing was great and the characters were interesting. Then with S2, it felt like there was no effort put in. Black Sun could’ve been great, if the episodes weren’t 45 minutes to 1 hour and if the show was written by someone who was very experienced with toku already (or at least, Rider itself) GARO works, because it’s similar to other toku: changing leads and monster of the week stories, followed by being 20 to 30 minutes per episode.
Black Sun used KR Black names & iconography but is more Faiz than Black:
_ It's about discrimination
_ Golgom is now a public organization with a mysterious subdivision like Smart Brain. In KR Black, Golgom is a mysterious cult with ties to public figure & organization
_ The Creation King now has the ability to make Heaven which rejuvenate monsters similar to the Arch Orphnoch's ability to extents Orphnoch lifespan in Faiz. In Black, all monster already has a 50k years lifespan
_ Kotaro even has a girl sidekick in this version like Mari in Faiz.
=> Why wasn't this a Faiz reboot instead?
"Then with S2, it felt like there was no effort put in."
Have you seen the movie ?
@@marverickmercer1968Yeah, I don’t remember anything about it.
@@aokhoinguyenang3992
Given how dark Faiz is and its themes of communication and isolation, perhaps people thought no one could tell the difference?
What are you talking about? Black Sun was fantastic.
I think the reason why I enjoyed Amazons and Kuuga so much was because the shows took themselves very seriously, whilst still providing plenty of moments for lightheartedness and kindness, the creators of said shows were very aware of the dark and cruel worlds they crafted, yet they still treated its characters with care and respect, they felt like mature stories rather than just a stew of violence and grimdark edginess
Wish we got more Tokus that took themselves seriously and didn't shy away from mature themes without falling for the trap of shallow edgyness, that was why Heisei era Kamen Rider succeeded where Shin Kamen Rider Prologue failed
"Did you see sunrise"

This is a beautifully explored and well written post, by you! I also love that, when Sentai is referenced, shots of Dynaman are used. That's my personal favorite Sentai show. "Just get in a rock quarry, on some stunt wires, and blow shit up, with rapid zoom lenses for every shot!" It's the BEST show, in my opinion, Bioman just ruined everything with "plots".
For me, I would also include Shin (not recent Shin), but Showa Shin, ZO, and J (the 90's movies) as adult iterations of Kamen Rider. First and Next were made more purposefully for adults, and they're basically perfect!
There is a scene from Barom 1 (1972), where one of the boys is strapped to a medical table, and the henchmen are all dressed as surgeons, with masks on, and they are there to extract his eyes! There was a cultural, like Yokai, horror element to Tokusatsu that has long-since retreated. Violence and horror is probably the reason that these early shows couldn't be translated earlier.
Kamen Rider Ghost should have been a horror-drama, but it was played as a kindergarten show.
I've been watching a lot of Battle Hawk (1976) this weekend. It's AMAZING! It also looks like every Toei super robot anime from that time! It's just pure Go Nagai designs, with no adjustments for live action. Heroes and villains look like it's an amateur stage show, wearing pajamas! Yet, it's super violent and fun!
I'm certainly not against shows like Amazons and Black Sun (I knew about the student protest movements in '60's and early 70's in Japan, so I loved that it was included) but I think you can find plenty of adult material in older shows before this. In Ultraman Taro, there is an episode where there is a haunted young girl who is irredeemable, by the end. The villain of the week is conquered, but she is still unsaved.
I actually loved Ultra Seven X! The stylized cyberpunk world was an interesting twist bringing in some serious GITS, Alita, & Matrix vibes, (& that reminder that anyone can be cool if you have a good pair of fingerless gloves & ALWAYS wear sunglasses, even in dark nightclubs!) 😎😎
On cinematorgraphy side, I really wish they use for vibrant and bright color grading for adult tokusatsu series. They doesn't need to always make it dull less vibrant color for adult toku show like amazons series.
I've very much been into the idea of "sequel/reboot project targeted at adults who grew up watching the original as kids", as long as it's done with respect by people who actually like and appreciate the original, not someone using deconstruction or edginess to take beloved childhood stuff down a peg. Opinions on their actual quality aside, in the west we've got both Legend of Korra and Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Korra's made by the original creators and stars characters in their late teens and twenties instead of early teens, the same change in demographic as the target audience of Last Airbender to Korra. MotU Revelation is written by 40 year olds for 40 year olds, but it's not out there going "wow, wasn't that thing you liked as a child goofy and stupid?". It's sincere in its respect for and elevation of the material.
I haven't watched Heisei Seven or U7X, but your description sounds largely the same, knowing that there's an adult audience pre-established and targeting them rather than trying to appeal to either new kids, or new adults with no interest in toku.
Really, I think both Ultraman Nexus and Shin Ultraman are really the blueprint here. Rather than going out of their way to be edgy adult-only affair, they're just for all audiences. Adults and mature kids can appreciate the more complex storytelling and characterization, and your usual toku tweens can still enjoy the monster fights and the triumph of good over evil, and maybe they'll appreciate those complex aspects more when they reflect on it as they age.
(And admittedly, I do have a soft spot for stuff like Amazons and Black Sun combining the style and color and over-the-top nature of toku with gratuitous adult-only subject matter. It's nice to see stuff that's definitely not for kids still be able to have fun.)
A really underrated tokusatsu that is for an adult audience is the series Girl Gun Lady (2021). It's 10 episodes, each 24 minutes long, and Bandai literally described it as "a tokusatsu series for adults in a new era." It's also one of the few toku out there with a majority female cast, as well as being fairly well written. Though, it may feel a bit odd to people more used to Rider or Sentai which use suits all the time and GGL being completely devoid of suits, opting for a motif of building plastic models for the girls to use as their weapons in the Girl Gun Fight in the show. Really annoying though that the show WAS actually able to watch legally while it was airing on the Bandai Spirits youtube channel but they since took it down from the channel so the only real option to watch it is to sail the seven seas. Still though, PLEASE give Girl Gun Lady a watch it deserves so much more attention and love.
This. 🔫
i actually have a download of all 10 episodes as they aired on the Bandai spirits youtube channel
Oh wow, I quit watching the show when it was airing after the first 4 episodes because I didn't like the acting and thought it was bad. but maybe I will give it a try again
Loved that show, still wish it'd get a second season considering they set one at the end of the first.
LMFAO at the abrupt offhand reference to Giga Toku series like Wakusaver.
I would love a Tokusatsu app come out worldwide. I would pay monthly for sentai and kamen rider.
Toei and Tsubaraya would be 2 requirements for most people, other companies pitching in would be nice bonuses to attract more toku fans.
As a big fan of Nexus, I actually like that they ended it within 37 episodes. The thing about Nexus was that the plot kept moving forward with almost no filler-like episodes that you'll often see in typical Ultraman shows and that made Nexus a solid season.
That feels like they wasted their time 😂
The most recent episode of Geats had a pretty Kuuga moment with Keiwa/Tycoon
Mf beat the shit out of a bunch of Jyamato without even equipping his Desire Driver
My intro to adult toku was funnily enough the sequel to the western live action adaptation of Guyver: Guyver Dark Hero (Starring a young David Hayter AKA Solid Snake as the lead!). And whether or not it is a good movie or adaptation aside, it did make me realize that the tokusatsu genre wasn't just limited to children as target audiences. Which is funny since the first Guyver seemed to be targeted to a younger audience.
God, imagine an adult reimagining of Kuuga
Twice the bloodshed and beat downs
Kuuga doesn't need a reimagining. It's plenty gruesome and disturbing while being subtle. The image of a boat full of innocent tourists getting slaughtered by a Grongi and drifting down the river with corpses on the deck is more haunting than Racist Dude in Black Sun getting his head crushed.
Hope all you edgy people enjoyed the super dark, serious and mature marcosatsu video.
Black Sun used KR Black names & iconography but is more Faiz than Black:
_ It's about discrimination
_ Golgum is now a public organization with a mysterious subdivision like Smart Brain
_ The Creation King now has the ability to make Heaven which rejuvenate monsters similar to the Arch Orphnoch's ability to extents Orphnoch lifespan in Faiz

Also implied that Crisis empire will rise and invade world of Black.
I do wonder if Nexus will get a sequel or reimagining or whatever in the future. Tsuburaya has said they're interested in expanding their teen & adult shows/movies selection.
They should do something other than their giant heroes ip; something like operation mystery or warashi would do
So that's why what it was that made it clicked for me. It explains a lot considering how similar in tone Jetman is to these more mature shows.
Voicelugger, written by og creator of Rider, Ishinomori. It’s a parody of sentai that eventually becomes darker, but maintains the spirit of it. The full series is on UA-cam.
Excuse me, theres a tokusatsu that i dont remember the name... it was short, 12 episodes, about a 5-team monster team (I think they were aliens but with demonic designs) forming a "sentai" team. It had a G somewhere
@@FredMaverik Shougeki Gouraigan. It's by the same guy that created Garo
Oh man when garo was out i was in university and i love that series and i still have the sochaku henshin series garo,
I afraid watching ultra7 when i was a kid, but i love watching heisei seven when i was in middle school in the early 2000s
I know for me I just wish we could get better distribution and dubs for Kamen Rider. I knew Blazar is planned with an English dub so that will be interesting to see how that goes. I am totally fine with subs but my nephew that likes how the characters look and is really into power rangers (he is often playing with his Kamen Rider W and Ultraman Ginga figures I got him) but he has a lot of anxiety around reading and subtitles make that harder on him so that makes it hard to get him to watch any of it. Tsuburaya is doing a good job on those fronts though, but to me at least though I like Ultraman the basically rubber muscle suit is kind of off-putting visually though I still enjoy the content of it. I originally was a power rangers and then Sentai fan with gokaiger but then I got hooked on a few Kamen rider seasons starting with Gaim, then Build, ZeroOne, Revice, and of course Geats.
Also, big thumbs up for Tokusatsu Gagaga and Akibaranger and Garo ❤.
If you can get access to raws you could help him learn Japanese if he wants to. He's still somewhat young from the way you described him, so it wouldn't take very long for him to pick up on the language, and, speaking from experience, it's way less stressful watching without subtitles (even if you can't understand anything at first), than trying to read everything before the next line hits and you miss the last few words and have to rewind every 5 seconds lol.
I got into Kamen Rider through Black Sun, finished Amazons and really liked them both. I started the original Kamen Rider and I'm really enjoying it. Excited to see Shin Kamen Rider soon as well as starting Garo. I'm very curios what reboot we will get next!
might as well watch Kamen Rider The First and The Next, those 2 are the only adult-ish Kamen Rider shows left along side those you've mentioned
@@cheesuschrists Yep, already seen them. I really liked The Next
i really got happy when he mentioned the fact that lion-maru was on brazilian televisions becouse i am from brazil and not only lion maru but a lot of metal heros, ultraman ultraseven and cosmos, changeman to maskman and black & black rx too and in 2018 (i guess) they got back from ep 1 to the final and that's awesome becouse some dads were showing their favorite tokusatsu to their kids (except for ultraman) and a "funny fact" black rx and saban's masked rider was in tv on the same year and some fans got confused, nowdays we got some new kamen riders and only riders in prime video like kuuga agito build zi-o, this relates to nothing on the video but i really loved the mention to brazil thanks marco.
I found an interesting character in Kamen Rider's Black Sun-Izumi Aoi. She is a teenage activist who is proclaiming Kaijin’s rights to survival. She was originally an optimistic and bright figure before many tragedies happened to her. She is forced to undergo bloody human experience to turn into a Kajin while witnessing her parents brutally killed before her eyes. She sees many of her friends killed before her eyes in horrific ways of death. She has to undergo a lot of battles and kill many lives to save her friends and accomplish important missions. All these experiences are excessively cruel and overwhelming for an adolescent girl to bear. Eventually, she becomes a resilient and determined person while being relentless when fighting enemies and making the right choices. Even witnessing all the cruelties, she still doesn’t lose her original heart for Kajin and humanity’s co-existence. Izumi Aoi is portrayed by a 15-year-old Japanese actress. When filming the character, the actress has to memorize all the aspects of the character’s psychology and perform every detail of the character’s expression. The shift of Aoi’s personality after witnessing so many cruelties has to be smooth and apparent. It’s incredible that an actress possesses a high level of performing talent and performs a complex character well at a young age
YES, KAMEN RIDER BLACK (or Black Kamen Rider as It was called Here) IS IMORTAL IN BRAZIL ❤️
Id watched It on the early 90's as a kid and Loved It. Rewatching today, with the eyes Of an adult e ABSURDLY MORE DEMANDING AS AUDIENCE ... I really got amazed How the series hold well trough The test Of time.
Lightning, ART direction, photography, that absolutelly killer soundrack, The analog special effetcs and the work on costume design ... It really is imaginative and keep powerful on a way most tokusatsus Id experiencie doesn't.
Some people tend to Think Its a matter Of production value, but I don't think thats necessary The case. The same way you can do great cinema with budget restritions and using imagination I believe the same aplies to tokusatsus.
I Mean ... Sure Black probably where not cheap at the time It was made. But you can reach similar results on an image perspective spenting much less budget today.
And, I almost forgot. Black story and script is spot on! Not even the sequel, Black RX did It so well. The basis Of ALL should always be a good Idea and good writing. After this comes creativity to use what you had at Your dispose to Tell that story.
Great video. Hugs From Brazil 😉✌🏻
Man, I miss Garo. I know that in the grand scheme of things, it hasn't been THAT long since Versus Road, but I'd really love a new series.
I remember watching the anime Garo: Vanishing Line and thinking "This would make a great toku series" and what do you know: it already was.
Not a show but I think Ranger Reject is a good example of a toku-inspired manga for, not quite adults, more like YA but still an older audience than your typical toku. It's a battle manga from the perspective of a random villain mook from a group of invaders that has already been essentially defeated by the world's Sentai adjacent rangers who are all secretly prolonging and exploiting the conflict for selfish reasons. Fun read that as you would expect just pokes all sorts of fun at tropes while also being it's own thing with more stuff going on than just being a goofy action parody
I usually watch Kamen Rider and an occasional season of Super Sentai but I remember watching the first few episodes of the original Garo when they popped up on my recommended on UA-cam. I loved how different it was from the Toku that I usually watched. I haven’t watched any more Garo episodes mainly due to having to focus on other in life but I would love to watch more Garo
I watched this video a lot of times and i have to say, you're absolutely right about how a more adult oriented toku can be more appealing to someone who doesn't watch toku. My first real tokusatsu show was Amazons and since then i became a kamen rider fan and a fan of toku in general, before this i thought that everything was "Power Rangers but japanese"
Its a good thing that i enjoy both sides
Ultraman Blazar is off to a good start.
Kuuga being the only Heisei without a movie kinda make me wish it had a reboot movie especially since the actor won't reprise the role anymore
They are planning for a reboot kuuga movie

I'm here for a Hibiki remake, either made in Japan or in the USofA, going full on with the original script. Let Takatera finish his vision without any budget restrictions. And maybe some cameos from actors from the original series, why not.
Reading that got me thinking.
An American-made Hibiki remake, with a heavy focus on Native American culture. Get people like R. Carlos Nakai involved with the music, have traditional crafters on the suit design teams, pull episode plots from traditional stories. Some of the themes that could be explored can borrow from the land-back movements of the modern day... but just saying "they're right and should be given whatever they ask for" doesn't feel like a theme that would work in a Kamen Rider story.
Ask more poignant questions -- what does it mean to be born in a culture that's protected by the descendants of the people who almost killed that culture? How do you carry on with the weight of so many atrocities committed long before you were born? How do you deal with the bitterness and resentment felt by other people, bitterness and resentment at acts committed a century ago, or longer? Most important of all: how should it look to continue on? What might a new era look like? How do you forgive the unforgivable?
I absolutely hate what they did to Hibiki after half of the series, like sure ig you gotta sell by making things more dramatic but it didn’t have to be that way, the whole sword gimmick which doesn’t work with the instrument weapon gimmick that they had in the first half and the cast literally becoming angsty and hating on each other instead of being wholesome and actually interacting like real people and working as a team which was really captured well in Kuuga as well,it’s no wonder that I loved both Kuuga and Hibiki both the protagonist also give that optimism despite going through hell
Really love your content. Hugs from Brazil
8:13 The ultra N project was always supposed to be a one off thing nothing more nothing else(that was Ultra in the beginning of the Haisei era). Also the movie wasn't really a complete failure but it did get hurt by the movie releasing in the middle of the show's run and not in the beginning and the sequel getting canned was way more about the show's viewership being bad then anything else
I wish they made a sequel to Shin Kamen Rider: Prologue (1992). I really liked that version of it. Apparently there's a short story about the main guy's weird son all grown up, and he becomes the next kamen rider. I don't think it's available in english, tho
I've been somewhat of a Tokusatsu fan since I was kid, having seen Godzilla 2000 in theaters and since them have watched most of the movies. But it wasn't until earlier this year that I began getting into Kamen Rider, starting with EX Aid, mostly due to the video game theme. And since then, I've been watching more and more, with my newest watch being Kamen Rider Saber. It's grown on me quite a bit. In fact, I've come to like it so much that I've started writing a new story inspired by Kamen Rider. I can't say whether people would like it or not if I ever decide to have it published, but if I do put it out there, I hope those who do like Kamen Rider enjoy it.
As a kid I loved Power Rangers, but grew out of them cause they were cheesy and meant for children. However, I love the Boom Studios Power Rangers comics that are more mature and I finally got into Kamen Rider with Black Sun and Shin so I would be down to get more reimagining or new dark Kamen Rider storylines
I feel like adult tohoku shows have lots of potential.
I mean, look at The Boys, or The Witcher, GoT, Breaking Bad.
They are all adult shows that not only contain material that would never be allowed in kid stories nowadays, but have a balance between being dark and mature and just being a show.
The Boys, more so, as it is the ‘dark, adult and mature’ super hero show.
Even Netflix Daredevil was a great, more adult oriented super hero show.
While it’s debatable whether these adult shows should be reimagining on older kamen rider etc, but, I think if they choose ones that already contain elements of nature story telling, and focus on those aspects, even if only originally touched on in one episode, can be a great way to make the mature relevant. It isn’t turning a not ‘mature’ story (like don’t bully) into something dark, but fake what is already a mature story but executed in a ‘adult’ way.
People have said have kid shows can and have mature content, more so than some these adult shows, so I think that’s a good way to reimagine shows to be more adult while not feeling like just a ‘edgy’ version
Ultraman Nexus is a great series that is undeservedly underrated. Kick ass music in it as well. Nexus and Ultraseven x are the only ultraman shows that i like.
I want to put out there that I am not attacking you for your opinions from your editing. Simply giving my own based on the information I have seen in this video. All in good fun.
1. Cosmos was my gateway into the Ultraman franchise, loved it
2. Next/Nexus had to be prime examples of mature themes done right while paying soft homage to the original series while doing its own thing. "Failure"? That is shocking to hear, as I am aware that Nexus as well as other characters have appeared in other media. I wish there were more like them
3. Where's the next Garo season?😶 VR needs a season 2!
I personally loved to see both adult and family for all content but I rather prefer shows that combines the 2 aspects together that doesn't rely so much on the dark and edgy content such as with Tokusatsu Gagaga and Kamen Rider Build.
Those 2 shows managed to tell a story that resonates with the adult viewers and based on real life tragedies but it has that hope and light-heartedness that doesn't have to be entirely dark all the time.
Even then, i want more Toku shows that doesn't have to be gory, dark, or edgy but rather have a more balanced and deep nuances that feels mature because it has that positivity that confronts and acknowledges the negativity such as with Shin Ultraman. I think the recent shows did very well on this such as with Geats, and KingOhger and we are starting to see Blazar maybe having the same feel too.
I think Kuuga to me is a good example of a Mature Tokusatsu. It is dark but it's rather optimistic protagonist balanced it out, along with other hopeful stuff here and there.
I feel like that the problem with Amazons and Black Sun is that they really wanted to emphasize the theme of the show and the blood/gore rather than offer a well-paced mature story. (If you tell me you understood Black Sun's story from the start, I'm going to ask you how many times you how many times you had to rewind.)
I want to like both shows but the story of the show feels like it takes a backseat to the spectacle.
AS FOR GARO THOUGH, I CAN PRAISE THIS SERIES NON-STOP.
It took me one watching (and no rewind.. well, a few, but it's to rewatch the action scenes). It's pretty easy (for me) to understand what's going on. I actually have easier time digesting Black Sun over Amazons.
That being said, black sun is certainly NOT something one would watch as a recreation of sorts. I came in expecting heavy theme and a spoonful of realism, and personally speaking, I saw exactly that.
Garo, on the other hand, is simply much more enjoyable to watch than either Black Sun or Amazons.
Yo shin kamen rider's transformation always got me scared as a kid, but i always like it. I felt like thats how transformation should work. Painful and emotional
Idk I really loved Black Sun, like so much I started watching Kuuga. It drew me in. Nothing like Black Sun but it got me into Kamen Rider in general
At first when I was young I didn’t like gore and realism in anime and tokusatsu but now as a teenager who watched too many kiddie toku shows
I Really like Dark toku and anime shows like Ultraman Nexus, Jisariz, attack on titan, Mobile suit Gundam Ibo, Shin Kamen rider, Shin Godzilla and Kamen rider black sun. Toku for adults is Awesome and shows how some toku would be adapted to real life!
I wish you tagged the shows so i could have a name for the ones i havent seen.
so fucked up that i see almost no comments about garo
I don’t think Amazons would detract from their Showa predecessor. OG Amazon and Amazon alpha are tied for my number 2 favorite rider, and I like them for the exact same reasons. I took Amazons as a project to be a way for Toei to go back and do right by Amazon.
In the original series, they had to slam the breaks on the awesome limb-ripping and bloody biting because APPARENTLY it was over the line as a kids show, and it was replaced with some weird special effect where they ripped a printed picture of the bad guy in half. So I think the new series was an apology for that, an apology I accept tf out of.
I got into Toku via the Garo anime. I grew up watching the Saban Power Rangers and Kamen Rider. As I grew older the adult stuff drew me in more than the wacky stuff. So I hope to see more mature Toku. I liked Black Sun, I loved Revice and Shin Kamen Rider.
Garo is a great series, versus road was not the best entry for it, though. I am wondering when there will be a new Garo entry, because it is a really good series.
11:18 what toku is he referencing? The suits look kinda cool, especially the blue one
i looked around and found its called "Kyuusei Sentai Wakuseiber/Wakusaver" it is an AV Web-Series, in case that changes your mind
Tokusatsu is not inherently a “kid thing”. I mean, they make Tokusatsu for various demographics like kids, teens and adults.
Imagine an adult remake of Kamen Rider hibiki that would make me pretty steamed I love the concept of using instruments As Weapons to fight supernatural creatures
Ok but speaking of more squarely adult/older audience aimed tokusatsu series
I think Ultraman Blazar does it without being dark and violent
Muito bom ver o Brasil mencionado!!
Honestly it would be cool if old Heisei area Kamen Rider was remade for older audiences but was called "The Dark Universe" versions like "Dark Universe Kuuga" or "Dark Universe Agito"
I really want to see a mature rating reboot of Agito
I was talking to one of my friends, who really liked horror movies, and I suggested that they watched Amazon Riders.
Personally i think Ryuki, Agito, and 555 hold up pretty well. They have some narrative issues. Which would be great things to consider when reimagining them. Agito can lean more into its horror aspect of the show. Maybe give Gills a Jekyll and Hyde spin to it. While 555 can lean harder on its sci-fi aspect, and Ryuki is already a great concept with ita gladitorial theme. Just make it more fleshed out and clean up loose ends. This is how i always imagined the shows and i enjoy them regardless of their faults.
Ive always consudered adult Kamen Rider shows and movies as Toku-Horror.
Kamen Rider Black and Jaspion are so popular here in Brazil that it get anoying sometimes.

Dr. Daisuke Takayama/Kiramai Killer portrayed by Tom Fujita!
I know it was alot less memorable than Black Sun and Shin Kamen Rider, but i think the 3rd 50th project, Fuuto Tantei, can also be considered Adult Toku. Its an anime so its not exactly Toku, but i think that lends to how Adult Toku can work to get people interested in the medium, branching the idea of Toku to anime fans that might be at first hesitant by 'live-action adaptations' and such.
I cant tell if it being a direct sequel hurt or helped it... but at least that means it can never truely overshadow W like Amazons did to Amazon.
Ultraseven is STILL the best Ultra show ever made in my opinion.
J and Shin were for adults? I watched it as a child with no problems but as I grew I realized it more I might have got the message from these two too early either that I or I confused black suns mask for j and shins. Anyways it s a very underrated series with some fancy esthetics I hope others get the chance to find out about the big 3 of Tokusatsu specifically Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai. Those are really good if you want action and split adult and children content basically for all ages. simply the fact that it's for all ages is a good thing the old characters the young audience can look up to like Takashi Hongo to Tokiwa Sougo. From Himitsu Sentai Gorenger to Ohsama Sentai Kingohger- Im getting off track anyways if you want something fun you and your friends can watch and if you're tired of childish stuff I'd prefer shin or black sun or amazons. - Tokusatsu Robloxian.
I'm from Brazil,I watched Lionmaru when i mas a child
Amazon Riders unfortunately is no longer accessible as it's been delisted
Shame that a Japanese executive at Bandai of America has a grudge against Toei and ended up in charge of the Kanen Rider team, and shut down a lot of Rider stuff in the US.
I know this is some rumor circulating on Twitter, but is there any actual proof for this?
He got me on was born in Brasil at the 80s
3:06 I wouldn't consider Shin Kamen Rider Prologue a remake of the OG Kamen Rider. The 2005 film Kamen Rider: The First is more fitting of this description.
I'm 8 minutes in and while appreciating the overview I'm kinda lost on what should I actually watch
I feel that one thing Amazon can do is have physical releases 6 months to a year after they release a show. While figures and other toys are nice, physical media and collecting shows that I enjoy is often much cheaper and takes up less space.
The super sentai shows & Kamen Rider shows are my favorite fictional characters I know the CGI looks weird the story is what matters with The characters are interesting i care about them
I think Kamen Rider Amazons and Kamen Rider Black Sun Is Reiwa Era Since 2022
Amazons came out in 2017.
What was the name of the one you wanted us to watch? I think it's the one with the Toku fan involved? A quick title on screen would really help us newnto the genre find and watch some of these that interest us. Thanks!
In our country and Spain, Kamen Rider Amazons is known as Amazon Riders.
There is a world of difference between an adult's version of an adult show
And a teenager's version of an adult show.
There is nothing more painful that a 14 year old's version of "adult" when it's just terrible edge for edge's sake.
I'd rather jump off a bridge.
🎵Yuke kaze no gotoku, makai no senshi yo...🎵
Can't wait until they remake faiz with darker theme
Faiz was wild for a kids show.
I think the reason people might pass off Toku as "Power Rangers" is because of the colourful nature of a lot of these shows. Marvel succeeded by making movies, not by putting people in spandex. What we've seen with "Western Toku" is that sci-fi and effects films didn't lean into the same realm as, say Saturday morning cartoons like how Toku generally leans into Sentai and Kamen Rider. Rather, they've been films about stories (usually), with the effects coming afterwards. But adult Toku will struggle here so long as it keeps going out of its way to employ colourful costumes and child-like visuals. Something like Garo worked because it didn't have a team of 40 year old stunt actors in coloured spandex. It didn't have that cartoonish visual style that lets people tap out early on.
You also talk a lot about reimaginings of older shows, which are going to come with that same baggage. Any adaptation of a Sentai or Kamen Rider series is going to "look like Power Rangers" because that's what it is. If you're drawing on kids media, you're going to get passed off as being kids media.
Man went the entire video without mentioning Build. The restraint...
