  • Chris Hayes: If we're going to let Covid circulate relatively unchecked, then we need to be putting our backs into the effort to develop the next generation of vaccines and drugs and getting the ones we have, like Paxlovid, to everyone who needs and wants it.

      My 85 year old relatives in Australia were exposed to Covid by their son last Sunday. He tested positive Monday. They are a social family and love getting together.
      At least they are used to a lifetime of great healthcare so there would be no neglected piled up health issues if they catch it.
      I have never met that side of the family yet.
      It doesn’t look hopeful. The statistics are against them.

    For Republicans in Congress, their basic duty is to normalize hundreds of thousands of COVID deaths per year going forward, just like they normalize tens of thousands of deaths caused by people with guns and people driving recklessly, and people overdosing on drugs. Together they account for 100,000 deaths a year or more. The only deaths in the last 20 years Republicans have gotten upset about were the 3,000 deaths on 9/11. Those were tragic. None of the others apparently are. Someone please explain the logic of devoting a half a trillion dollars to the DHS since 9/11 to prevent another 3,000 deaths, but not the 2 million deaths from guns, vehicular accidents, drug overdoses and COVID. 3,000 is tragic and 2,000,000 is not. Fine. I will be happy to give a Republican $3,000 in exchange for $2,000,000, and watch the joyful look on his/her face. Thank you.

    'Relapsing' actually makes sense. Paxlovid stops the virus from replicating, but after 5 days any remaining virus can start replicating again. I'll be honest, when my husband and I got sick we did not have a rapid test, we ordered them they came in eight days. Before then we were barely able to move. For the first five days, we just slept. I remember feeling very shaky from not eating. I got up on day three I think. Put a burrito in the microwave for two min. I took it out and just laid down for a nap I did not have the energy to eat it. I woke up sometime later to a room-temperature burrito. I ate it and went back to bed. Just getting water was hard. By the time the tests had come, we were feeling better, not well just better. I made a big batch of chicken soup we ate until we could really cook again, (I always have homemade stock). My point is we were not well enough to go out and get tested, so we could not ask for the medication, that we could not have gone to get.

    I contracted COVID for the first time March 20th 2020 just about a week after the pandemic was announced to the world. I was very sick for about a month. Early on there wasn't any treatment or vaccine available as doctors tried to figure out how to stop people from dying. I have to stress that the whole situation was extremely scary as it seemed to be "everywhere" and I had little confidence that anybody would be able to help my wife and I get through this! Contrast all that to last week. My wife tested positive for COVID last Sunday. By Monday afternoon she had her first dose of Paxlovid and seemed to feel a bit better. For me I tested positive on Tuesday and started on Paxlovid that afternoon. There is absolutely a complete difference in the two cases of COVID as I experienced them. This time around with Paxlovid, the only annoyance was the sour grapefruit taste in my mouth.
    None of the WEEKS of "GREEN gobs of stuff" coughed up, that each time could fill a shot glass.
    Horrible nightmares and weakness seemed to have forgotten me this time around. So far, I have finished the Paxlovid meds and test negative now on Sunday. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!😁

    There's a contingent of Americans whose brains are wired differently. God bless their crazy souls. I recently stood outside an urgent care facility waiting to be seen by a physician. Also, outside in the parking lot with me, was a woman with the same problem. We had tested positive for COVID. COVID patients have to remain outside the building until a doctor is ready to see them. The woman patient was determined not to take Paxlovid. I asked what her reservations were based on. The reasons she gave were political, not medical. As she left the doctor's office, I asked if she agreed to take Paxlovid. She said no. When it was my turn to be seen, the doctor said, the choice is yours. All she did was make sure my kidneys, heart and liver were in good enough shape to tolerate the medicine. I took it and felt better within a couple of days.

    Thank God you are talking about Paxlovid. I am 84 and though vaccinated and boosted and with no known exposure, I contracted Covid. My brother had heard of Paxlovid and though my doctor’s office didn’t think it was available (in our city of 200,000 people), after calling numerous pharmacies, we finally located it in a Sam’s Club pharmacy. As you have said, the pharmacist told me they had lots of it but no one was prescribing it. Why did no other pharmacies have it? I was further surprised to discover it was free, no insurance required, and was paid for by the government. I started taking it the same night I was diagnosed and felt incredibly better by the next day, only experiencing a slight sore throat and a bitter taste from the medicine, though I had been quite ill the day before with a high fever and the worst headache I have ever experienced. From that day on, I never had any recurrence of symptoms and have no “Long Covid” problems. I 100% attribute Paxlovid with my rapid recovery but am horrified to find no one talking about it. I consider myself well informed but if it hadn’t been for my brother, I wouldn’t have know about it. Since then I have told dozens of people about Paxlovid and not a single one of them has ever heard of it. You are the first I have heard discussing it in the media. You would think, if the government thought it was worth paying for, they would be publicizing it but they aren’t. As you say, it is not for everyone but for those that can take it, at least in my experience, it is very close to miraculous. It is truly a public health failure that we are not getting this information out.

  • @thomasross4921
    @thomasross4921 2 роки тому +3

    Regarding the "are we going to have this forever?" question, the answer, unfortunately is an emphatic "yes". The reason: too many animal reservoirs. Even if we got to 99% worldwide vaccinations in humans, whitetail deer are getting the same outbreaks we are, and if you have pets and catch Covid, there's a 1 in 5 chance your dog or cat gets it too. We can make it rare and mild with comprehensive vaccinations, but we're not going to cure it any sooner than we cure rabies or malaria.

    I've taken and Paxlovid I think it helped me, but there's no real way to know at the individual level. Certainly, as a double-vaxxed and boosted (though my booster was way back around Halloween last year) active middle-aged person whose only known risk factor is being chonky, my absolute risk of severe outcomes was never super high. But I still didn't want to be any sicker than necessary and long covid should be a concern for everyone.The drug can have side effects, but those are generally very tolerable, provided the medicine help with the covid. We need a lot more controlled studies, a lot more research into who benefits most. And if the answer turns out to be that it benefits nearly everyone, then we need to do everything possible to make accessing it super affordable (or, better, free) and super convenient.
