CAN this Crashed Caddy Communicate? (ABS-Steering-Airbag...2014 CTS)

  • This 2014 Cadillac CTS AWD was towed in from a fellow UA-camr's body shop to diagnose a CAN Communication fault.
    The ABS, Power Steering, Steering Angle Sensor and Airbags cannot talk to each other!
    Let's take a logical approach and pinpoint this CAN fault efficiently.
    All we will need for this diagnosis is a scanner, OEM wiring diagrams, a good ohm meter, and your BRAIN :)

    Beautiful! Making me feel like I'm working on a Saturday... LOL
    Splitting CAN networks is so crucial to finding faults like this, and it's even better when you have 2-3 body techs and a shop owner looking over your shoulder telling you you're crazy, the damage couldn't possibly be THERE, and then...Doink! There it is! Shop spent a week on it, you fixed it in 20 minutes. Love it!

    Very well thought out diagnostic procedures.
    All the steps from RPO and OE diagram use saved hours in my estimation.
    Double checking the pin out when it didn’t jive with what you expected was being very thorough.
    These steps don’t come natural to the average nut and bolt technician.
    I’m 7 yrs retired from this. Saw some of it before 2016 but not to the extent now.
    This half blind broken down 69 yr old car tech sure loves living out his love of fixing electrical problems thru you now. Thanks a bunch.

    Reminds me of my days in the USAF as an aircraft mechanic. Except there, our wiring diagrams were HUNDREDS of pages. Same troubleshooting process: split the system and test, split and test, etc. continuing to narrow it down until you find the problem. Not a hard process, just time consuming. Add in a malfunction that only occurs when aircraft (fighter) is in a high G maneuver…that my friend will cause many sleepless nights! Thanks Ivan…enjoy watching you work…because I don’t have to. 😂

    Hams and RF engineers immediately recognize the balanced transmission parallel feed line of the CAN. The terminating resistors at each end keep the reflections (SWR) down to a minimum and are critical to the proper operation of the transmission line.

    As a retired electronics engineer I urge you to learn how to use the audible connection checker on your meter.
    Or get a meter with this facility.
    This works with setting an ohms limit where the audible alarm sets in.
    In this example of your fault tracing, setting the meter to a 200 ohm limit, you would get an alam once the wiggle causes a temporary connection.
    Frees up your eyes and hands for the physical testing ...

    Hi Ivan, very detailed step-by-step diagnose which also shows the importance of having a diagram. I guess your resistance reading of around 6 kOhm was due to humidity-caused corrosion of the wire. The wire insulation was probably damaged by the crash.

    • @londen3547
      @londen3547 Рік тому

      Probably defective from the factory. A broken wire inside the insulating sheath can function as long as the fractured ends are making contact and the conductor is not required to carry a lot of current. Given enough movement, in this case an accident and contact was broken.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  Рік тому +2

      It was just a slight pinch of the harness by the radiator during the collision, and the thin CAN wire got slightly compromised is my guess.

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I've never run across that situation. Which makes sense as you have to have enough free length on the wire to slide the shrink away from the soldering heat so it doesn't accidentally shrink the tip of it. All it takes is a tiny bend of the wire @ end of shrink to hold it in place. Also, in situations where the shrink wants to wander back near the solder point, I'll kink the wire to hold it away from the soldering heat.

This network is basically a loop of wire with 2 120 Ohm resistors at each end...you can easily simulate this on a bench and do some experiments with the ohm meter too :)

    Well done Ivan 😀
    That was hidden too well lol.
    Lets hope that there are no more R.T.B (Ready to break) wires in that harness.
    Sorry I'm dooming it lol.

    My wife watches your videos. As a matter of fact. She's about 15 minutes behind me. Which gives me about 30 minutes to come up with a way to convince her that her car has "fancy all wheel drive" Thank your daddy kids. THANKS DAD! LOL Great videos. 😂

    Boy I cannot tell you disappointed I was to connect my fancy new Thinktool Pro to a 2001 Sunfire, but alas, I had to go back to my Zurich from HF. The thinktool would not read any of the modules. Granted I do like the graphing function better n the Thinktool, I was really expecting more. But it's another tool in the shop. ;)

      It's crazy that the harness had absolutely no external damage. Must have been pinched just enough to harm that one thin wire!
