- Acrobat Michael McNamara demonstrates both his ability to stand on a pedestal on one hand while spinning five hoops and his skill at tap dancing on his hands.
Sadly, Michael died less than eight years later on December 7, 1967 as a result of a car-pedestrian accident. His friend credited him with saving his life, as Michael saw the car coming and pushed him out of its path before being struck. Michael was to be on the Ed Sullivan show that next spring.
That was my grandpa's brother. He was amazing. It was a real shame he died at 18. I wish he was still here today.
He's amazing, a true prodigy. Was your grandfather involved in any acrobatics?
Nice try, he lived much longer, and even wrote books.
Oh man . He was so cool . Looked like he loved life .
His Find a Grave site states Michael was killed at age 21 (in 1967)
May this DELIGHTFUL young man be Resting in Peace with the Glory of God 🙏🙏🙏 ♥♥♥
Terrific kid, be sure to see his second appearance too.
I wrote a page about Michael on my Blog, I like to remember people who deserve to be remembered, Thanks, Michael.
Glad you did. Thankful for IGAS. The contribution of so many, now long since gone, lives on. IGAS offered Michael McNamara a special kind of immortality.
Wow that was a blooper that Michael gave away his secret before the panel guessed it I am glad Gary skipped the rest of the panel and I know Michael will never forget this one
Those in the know write that this broadcast was from 1960. Goodson-Todman started using videotape in 1959, and I can't help but wonder if this episode was videotaped for later broadcast. If I were the producers, I would be scared spitless about some sort of accident on live TV -- to a kid yet -- and what sort of liabilities would come crash down on my program.
Did you see his arms? When was the last time you've seen a kid that physically fit?
It's a shame he was killed so young.
Definitely said SONNY, which was a generic sign of affection for a boy at that time. A more innocent time.
Crown Point? Holy heck, I grew up near there!
I recorded Ive Got a Secret and just watched this child on his 2nd appearance on the show. He stood upside down on one finger and pivoted. What a shame he died in that horrible accident. He is an American hero as he saved his friends life. Imagine what else he could have accomplished had he not given his life for his friend.
BJ White 💔 Breaks my heart. 💔
@1borito He called him "Sonny," not "Honey."
Please! Don't give him Winstons.
I met his sister Michaela McNamara from Crown Point. She shared this story with us. Remarkable family and tragic death of Michael. Glad to see he is still with us in this space. Is it Crown Point, most amazing and beautiful small town in New York state.
Is this the guy that was prasacuter attorney in Montcalm County in 1999 if so HE IS A BIG. LIER.
Damn. I thought my neighbor walking up the walls of a hallway was cool.
The urban and witty Durwood Kirby -- who worked with Garry Moore on Moore's variety hours -- might have tried to say "sonny." but frankly it sounds like "honey" to me.
It's Durward Kirby.... a fun fact... my daddy's name was Durwood
I agree . I tried to convince myself he said sonny but he didn't .
Pretty sure this was his SECOND appearance on the show as he appeared with all of his brothers when he was a toddler.
Easy mistake, but no. That big family was a different family of McNamaras... even though there was a Michael there. That big McNamara family welcoming their new sister aired May 6th, 1959... while THIS episode with a far more grown Michael McNamara aired less than a year later.
Who was the woman sitting beside Garry Moore?
Catch the video of the episode on UA-cam. Garry does introduce her. As I recall she wrote the show and he read her appreciative letter on-air. IGAS invited her to not only attend a taping of the show, but, more than that, to have the best seat in the theater onstage beside Garry.
