- The fishing swivel you use could end up in disaster. I look at the Eagle Claw swivel strength for size 10 to make the point that fishing swivel sizes and pound ratings are all over the map. Bettter to select a specific type of fishing swivel setup to avoid losing fish.

thanks this video solves my biggest doubt about Swivels, very good work
Glad to hear that!
Thank you sir, I’m new at fishing/ kayak fishing and trolling is my game lol. So switching different lures to see what they are biting on is a must. This video surely help me out
Great advice. Going to pitch all of my "straight tipped" swivels immediately.
Thanks. I was just thinking about this the other day when I was tying on one of those cheaper styles as well. Unfortunately I have bought an abundance of these over the years too.
I don’t use snap swivels a ton but when I do I tend to use cross lock or coast lock styles. I’ve never had one break or come apart.....I’ve had knots fail, but never the snaps.
Yes, I agree with you on that. Wish they would have the poundage on their tackle!
Amen. Always disliked those straight wired snap swivels ever since I saw how they function. The snap swivels with the angled notch to lock it in is revolutionary and I continue to use it for every artificial lure catching all kinds of fish from Bass, Walleye, Trout, and Salmon.
Super info. I’ll check mine tomorrow.
I have been using Meredith 50Pcs/Lot Fishing Connector Pin Bearing Rolling Swivel Stainless Steel with Snap Fishhook Lure Tackle Accessories from Aliexpress. They have the "L" shaped locking arm you recommend. I weight tested them using a luggage scale and found them to be close to the strength as advertised.
Thanks for the info!
After buying some of these I started to wonder if they’d actually work. Great vid, answered some of my questions.
I really appreciate that! I'll work even harder!
Great review. I use the snap swivels only because of the difficulty I have in tying the knots.
They definitely should test them and put pound ratings on package. I’ve seen a lot of good fish lost because of snap failures. I just never use any hardware (except top quality hooks) on my line. Used 3 way swivels in saltwater for many years, they worked ok, but would still tangle up in currents. Now tie several different rigs where I don’t need them and it works great. Great topic Steve! 👍👌🎣
Agreed
This is some thing I didn’t know I needed. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
So informative, thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Great stuff - never used the ones without the clip !!!
If. You are using 6 lb mono or Flourocarbon and catching fish up to 2 and a half pounds. That litt!e brass snap swivel will usually work just fine. Also it makes a very subtle clicking sound that's deadly on wobbling plugs and spoons. Going to a more expensive number 1 SPRO snap swivel also works well and gives you the needed strength for much larger fish.
Thanks for the tips!
As a DAV w/bad hand & wrist sadly gotta Ax somebody 2 tie a swivel one 4me. So far SW Pier FisH'n - Thkfully use long shank gold hook's which break b4 shark or big ray spools me. Usually then snap swivel survives. Great site TY
I don’t use snap swivels….swivels yes . I don’t mind tying a new knot as needed .
I started using bass pro snap links for about 3 years already and I love them. I dont know the sizes but the small one I use for anything around 10lb or less and if I'm doing striper, catfish, bass, I'll use the slightly larger one and I've never had a fish come off yet. I throw big pencil poppers, heavy catfish bait rigs and everything in between and I haven't had a fail yet. The small one is discreet and I can use it for panfish too.
This video could not have been more timely Had swivel failure last night. I see the light 😋
ouch
Another great video! I would’ve thought that they were much stronger than that.
You and me both!
I have found when trolling w/braided line many types of snap swivels fail when snagged because braided line is so strong. For a while I switched to Coastal Lock snaps and Cross lock Snaps and added my own barrel swivels. All common snap swivels fail over time due to metal fatiguing from opening and closing the snap which causes it to eventually break down and fail. I then switched to Gamakatsu Tournament Snaps which you don't open just twist the bait on and off but this is hard to do with these. My new go to is Tactical Anglers Power Clips (there are other Power Clips but these had the best reviews) to which I add a Spro Power Swivel which is the king of swivels. You don't open these power clips and just clip your lure on and off so no fatiguing of the metal over time. Very secure and much easier to use than Tournament Snaps - shaped kind of like a paper clip. Superior to any other snap swivel system I have seen and used.
Great tips - thanks!
Awesome video! Had never really thought about it!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you 😊😊😊👍👍 .
I learned this lesson the hard way when I was a teen. I had a stringer with the straight-style clips. Caught one of my biggest bass ever--probably between 6 and 8 pounds, and put it on the stringer. Later I went back to retrieve it, and the bass spooked and bolted, pulling that straight clasp straight out of its mooring! Rassin' frassin'....
Ouch!
I only use the quick twist by Norton. Never had one fail. The snap swivels have failed me many times.
This is vital info, even for those of us who use fly rods a lot. I have a batch of the old Eagle Claws that will bite the dust the next time I clean out my tackle boxes. Which proves I am not a fly fishing purist. I use some very hefty snap swivels on the planers I use for trolling. The folks at Eagle Claw ought to b e ashamed for trying to catch us with cheap junk.
Right on
A few years ago I had the misfortune of using a defective Eagle Claw snap/swivel on a Heddon propeller lure. I hooked into what could have been a state record Musky at Lake Shabbona in IL. A few good pulls and the fish (of my Life 😢) departed with my lure. After examining my terminal hardware, I noticed that the hole drilled into the swivel was off center and barely had any metal holding it in place on one side 😮. The snap pulled right through the defective side. My Bad for Not examining it BEFORE using it! And it was Supposed to be Heavy Duty! Just a tip learned the Hard Way.
@@robertneal6878 That really sucks to have a hardware failure like that, and cause the loss of a once in a lifetime fish. I used to use the cheap brass, plain snap type snap swivels as a kid when shore fishing for trout for the quick-change of spinners and spoons. I tied into a Brown Trout that was several times larger (about 6 lbs) than most of the pan sized fish that were the standard fare for that lake. The snap had opened but not straightened out, and I was lucky to be able to bring the fish to net before the wire bent out, since I was using an ultralight pack rod and 4 lb test with a light drag setting. After that, I mashed the tab down over the wire with a small pliers and quit using the snap swivels as a quick-change and just retied every time I wanted to change lures.
I had never heard of a swivel barrel failure until last year, when I battled in a nice Largemouth (9.5 lbs) that was wearing some jewelry. It had a small rooster-tail spinner in its jaw with a locking snap and 1/2 of a swivel left on the snap. The swivel had failed just like you have described. The line used was obviously stronger that the faulty swivel, braid I would guess. The spinner looked new, so I think the failure had just happened over the last weekend. I got the spinner out (free gear!) and released the bass to fight another day. Must have been heartbreaking for the person that lost that fine fish and their lure.
When I use snaps now, I only buy one of the secure stainless steel locking types. Unless I am going after pan sized fish only, I pry open my creaking wallet and invest in Sampo stainless steel ball bearing swivels to build my custom spinners and trolling rigs, or for any other lures that need a swivel. I also now examine and stress test all of my snaps and swivels to 4+ times the breaking strength of my lines before putting them in use.
You never know when a monster is going to grab the smaller fish that you are reeling in. It has happened to me twice, Northern Pike on a Bluegill, 40+ lb striper on a 13" Rainbow (lost that one and the trout, on my 4 wt fly rod no less, grabbed the trout right at my feet!) , and my wife lost a 4" bluegill and her, fly to a 5+ lb Largemouth the first time I took her fly fishing. She is 'hooked' for life now. 👍 and wants that dang bass back along with her first Bluegill and fly too! Good luck with your future 'finny' endeavors. Tight lines!
I’ve had good luck with Spro power swivels with hyper snaps. They cost a little more, but I’ve never had one fail.
thanks for the recommendation!
I never use the snap swivels without the snap-hook thing. I have had snap-hook style swivels fail as well, though it was very rare - either the hook straightened out or (more likely) both the hook and the flat part it hooks got bent/mangled. I do use them on rare occasions, but am far more likely to use non-clip swivels and simply re-tie the knots. As for size, I get the smallest ones which won't go through or get stuck on the line guide at the end of the pole. I don't remember ever having any of my non-snap swivels fail.
Thanks for that info!
Thanks!
I went and got two packs off eagle claw also three weeks ago. Went to snap the line on and it fell apart 4 of them one after the other. Trashed the slip when I had got home so didn't get take them back so I trashed both packs of eagle claw. For years and years I have been using them not anymore. I don't have a good word say about them at all. And I use the size 10 also most likely all of them are no good at all. ALL of this stuff is made over seas china, no wonder it's no good.
I use a an analogue luggage scale with locking scale to test line strength and snap locks and stuff. Better than using weight on a line. :)
Good point!
The actual swivel itself might be able to handle the weight, but that snap on the other hand.... Yeah, i only use snaps for when i know im gonna be retying often
If the company tells you a number, they have to have QC to maintain it. So it’s easier to not make claims.
I quit using the gold eagle claw swivel/latch
great video. very scientific. lol
I only use swivels for weights, lures and hooks should be tied!
@Brian O'Callahan. good point on spinners, thanks to Kayak Hacks for pointing out which ones NOT to use.
lot tip on fishing
I watched a guy lose a redfish tournament because one of these failed. Just sent him a link lol!
Eagle Claw are cheap trash. I've used them forever and have a habit of crimping the wedge where they snap together. Great video. I'm going to stop buying them.
Good to know!
I complain about the packaging design from these companies all the time. All they have to do is contact me and I can fix their issues. I can do packaging design and am an angler. I feel like lots of times you have some purchasing nerd ordering these products from china and they don't care about anything but the company logo on the package. Anglers on the other hand need more information! This also gives me a great idea for a complimentary video.
The swivel is still good, the clasp isn't.
Cut your clasps off and tie some jigs.
Dont spend all your video budget on the "visual aid" ;))))) that was a bank breaker
I paid for it with the tens of dollars I make on UA-cam
Cheap gear = cheap quality. Sometimes you really do have to spend more to get more.
