  • In this episode, we read the first two chapters of “The Principles of Geology,” by famed-but-mildly-ponderous geologist Sir Charles Lyell. Honestly, it was a little bit interesting, but try not to notice.

Honestly, it's such a good book! I would have loved to have read that (and Principles of Chemistry) in high school instead of the terrible textbooks we did get.

28:23 I'm an archaeologist and have done some work in the Andes, so I really felt that "oh dear" after you read Lyell's take on Humboldt's account of indigenous groups he recorded during his travels.

Alas, yes. I've rejected a lot of books that are SO much worse than the ones I let through. We've come a long way.
