Yunchan Lim launched onto the international music stage when he was 14. He won second prize and the Chopin Special Award in his first-ever competition, the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists in 2018. That same year, he stood out as the youngest participant in the Cooper International Competition, where he won the third prize and the audience prize, which provided the opportunity for him to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra. 2019 meant more accolades, when, at the age of 15, he was the youngest to win Korea’s IsangYun International Competition, where he also took home two special prizes.
Now just 18, he has performed across South Korea-including with the Korean Orchestra Festival, Korea Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestras, among others-as well as in Madrid, at the invitation of the Korea Cultural Center in Spain. He also participated in the recording of “2020 Young Musicians of Korea,” organized by the Korean Broadcasting System and released that November.
A native of Siheung, Yunchan currently studies at the Korea National University of Arts under Minsoo Sohn. Coming to Fort Worth, he says he is “looking forward to playing in front of the warmest and most passionate audience in the world.”

Prior to the performance, the audience would have no idea that they were about to witness a historical performance of this music from a 18 year old pianist in a competition. Lucky people!
한없이 부러운 사람들이죠. 역사적인 그 자리에 관객이 되었다니!
Historical or not historical, that is something that only future can point out. But I agree about this interpretation as a quite wonderful one. The calm, the concentration.
The only performances comparable to this (or equal to this) are Bronfman, Argerich, Volodos and Kern. Maybe Sunwoo’s and Horowitz’s also come close.
@@staffanolofsson8201It's been just over a month since this video was uploaded and it has generated nearly six million views, far exceeding that of Horowitz, which had hitherto the highest number of views. Anne-Marie McDermott, one of the jurors of VC Competition this year says "I have played Rachmaninov 3rd. Never again. It now belongs to Yunchan". Cliburn webcast co-host and pianist Elizabeth Joy Roe called it a once-in-a-lifetime performance that left her nearly speechless. Many people who love this piece say this is one of the best renditions of this music. Time is not the only factor that determines whether or not a performance is historical. The greatness of the performance itself determines it. It's only my opinion. Thanks for your reply anyway.
@@chiragraju821 I like Bronfman's and Volodos's versions too.
Yes, every time feels like the first time. I wish this video clip went a little longer and included all parts of his curtain calls, ovation, and reactions of Buddy Bray and Liz Roe, hugs with Marin Alsop, backstage mom reactions, and where orchestra members walk up to him right after to congratulate him. Those are priceless and authentic moments.

@@ddestiny44 "The entire piano world is about to collectively lose their mind." Ben Laude said it all with this opening statement in his analysis video. The listeners who are not in “competition” with Yunchan were simply in awe, ecstatic, and marveled at Yunchan’s prodigious musicality. But the professionals, notably those who recorded Rach 3 or their live performances posted on UA-cam, would be so embarrassed at theirs compared with Yunchan : They know how lousy their plays were and they cannot compete with Yunchan-no matter how hard they try-in million years. Yunchan is simply on another level that they cannot reach. The Rach 3 at Van Cliburn competition was an announcement to the world that the greatest living pianist was just born. Ben Laude and two guests (Van Cliburn jurors) confirmed it with their own words although they didn’t spell it out specifically-they needed to be diplomatic on that kind of statement.

@jjubilee, I agree with you. I didn't know anything about Yunchan Lim before the Cliburn competition.

Same here
I have listened to this recording many times now. There are hundreds of comments available about the work Yunchan does, as well as interviews, newspaper reviews and listener comments about this and the subsequent versions he has made of it with other conductors. Comments about his relative youth, and his seemingly freakish ability are easy to find. In one interview he really supplies his own explanation for his work, claiming that all the answers lie in the music. And he is so right. Of course he has enormous technical skills as well as an incredible capacity for very hard work. I fancy his IQ , including its literary, emotional and musical components, is extraordinary, BUT HE ALSO EMPLOYS IT TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL as he approaches any musical composition. He reveres the composers themselves and also delves into their histories. So Yunchan doesn't need to be old, have huge life experience, be entranced or possessed in order to perform as well as he does. This also explains what he means by' improvisation' as he plays-he doesn't rest on his laurels between performances but rereads and reinterprets the composers' intentions as new insights are revealed from the music. Occasionally he embellishes scores slightly, very fittingly, where he feels it will enhance the work-make it clearer. It is therefore the composers' knowledge, insights, life-experiences, moods, and intentions he reads from their works and uses his wonderful talents to present them to us as clearly as he is able. They are the old souls, but Yunchan has it within his DNA and young life experience to make it his business to know and honour them. Thank you universe.
And I always call his style as "Yunchanism"! Absolutely Limarkable!

I watched the competition live on TV, all pianists. Even before this performance, Mr Lim’s work made everyone else’s fade into the background. But then came the Rach 3 and I was mesmerised. I’ve been a pianist for 60 years, following so many different artists and attending so many concerts around the world. I’ve never heard anything as perfect and emotionally draining as this performance. Even now, after dozens of viewings, I’m still brought to tears. He’s a wonder. well in order for me to go up the treadmill I positioned the tv screen in front and watched this video while running at 4 speed. Watching it thrice and don't get tired! Life is wonderful with Yunchan music.
Had the great pleasure of seeing him perform Rach II with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra last night. Marin Alsop conducted. He was mesmerizing. Such beautiful dynamics. Power and sensitivity.
I personally thought that the piano could have been better, especially the base keys. But great dynamics from him nonetheless.
I think what makes Yunchan special is how he manages to attack his way into the orchestra. Like 28:28 - notice the exchange from piano to orchestra. He blends in and out very seamlessly that made you think that the orchestra has been playing with him for years. He grabs attention subtly and gives it away just the same. He then proceeds with the iconic theme after the exchange. His plays are never overwhelming even on the strong parts. Such control and balance. His bravura never intimidates but envelopes the listener with a sense of sincerity and ease. Without unnecessary exaggerated ticks. I believe that Yunchan performs not to feed his ego but to play only for the sake of immaculate music making and nothing else. This what makes him stand out from the rest. His humble, grounded, and down to earth approach in music. Thank you Yunchan.
that's correct! When I watched and listened to other rendition of this piece as if there was a chaos of instruments. Without undermining the musicians but it seemed there was a struggle to catch up. I felt it was more of a noise than music. Unlike here that pianist Yunchan and the orchestra sync beautifully! Really love it so I keep comin' back.
This shows that Yunchan doesn't need to constantly seek for attention. Even when this is a Piano concerto and the piano is supposed to be the main instrument, he is humble enough to give away attention to the instrument that has the main melodic line. He is not afraid to be at the back and be "just" a supporting melody. This way, there is a real dynamics between the instruments in the orchestra. They talk, and it is not just the piano that speaks.
HARMONY AT THE FINEST!

@Kew Sepehr
Mitsuko Uchida is at the end of her career.. Seiji Ozawa is in his 80s. So I think we can safely say there have been great interpreters of western classical music from Asia for a LONG time now.
And as a life long appreciator of western classical music (I'm an american in my 60s), I'm overjoyed that not only has Korea been producing top-notch musicians, but that they have produced a pianist with such incredible power and feeling for Rachmaninov, one of my favorite composers. This guy plays like a young Ashkenazy. Just outstanding.
The thing most people don't realize is that after World War 2 Korea was in a bad way economically because of the general state of the country after the occupation. You'll only really see larger numbers of top-flight musicians coming from places where there is a lot of economic success.. and Korea has definitely arrived at that place in the last 30 years or so. I couldn't be happier for them. Great country, outstanding people in general (I spent some time in Seoul on business)!

A year and a half after the competition, this boy has become a concert pianist, performing with the New York Philharmonic and the Munich Philharmonic. And he came to nec in Boston with Professor Minsu Son to continue his studies.
NEC and our Boston music community are very fortunate to have both Prof Minsoo Sohn and Yunchan Lim in our city. I am sure many prestigious music schools around the world must have offered Yunchan their full scholarship packages just to have him study in their schools. But he chose NEC because he would like to continue his study under his teacher. That says a lot about how much trust and respect Yunchan has for his Prof Sohn.

Lol but true
The video will still be playing in 2124.
In the pre-World War I years of Europe, amidst the social and political upheavals of the time, Crimean-Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff's genius did not initially receive the full recognition it deserved in New York, even up until the war's end in 1919. I believe it took pianist Yunchan Lim to truly convey the message Rachmaninoff embedded within his music - a message to humanity that transcended years.
For too long, brilliant pianists focused on the Rach 3's technical virtuosity, overlooking its soul and deeper meaning. Yunchan, however, provided the key to unlocking the world of inner turmoil Rachmaninoff experienced during his composition. He masterfully revealed how beauty the life and world can be and how easily consumed by the darkness of human ambitions that pave the way conflict and devastation.
Yunchan's fingertips brought to life the composer's longing and profound remembrance of his homeland, the war frenzy that gripped the people, and the ultimate societal devastation. With his performance, Rachmaninoff's emotions became tangible, visible, and palpable.
It was a privilege and a joy to witness a young genius and his masterful interpretation of a legendary compposition by another genius. From the depths of our hearts, we extend our gratitude: first to Yunchan Lim (- May Allah always protect him from the evil eye 🧿--) and his family, then to the Korean Society and the State that nurture such talent, a timeless legend for the world stage, and finally to the Cliburn Competition for inspiring and motivating young talents to enrich human civilization.
We eagerly await and hope that we will find the opportunity to witness Yunchan Lim's artistry Türkiye in our lifetime. 🎶

He is so completely in control, and his connection with the orchestra and conductor is so real and natural, that I wouldn't be surprised if he himself becomes a famous conductor one day.
True!!!!
But I hope he remains to be a pianist who inspires us all the time.
@@jee8210 he genuinely reminds me of Horowitz in his early years, but slightly less bombastic. The virtuosity he displays and his enormous repertoire (which wasn’t even fully played in the Cliburn) is enough to make any high level pianist envious of this 18 year old. It’s been 100 years since Horowitz’s debut in Europe as an 18-20 year old, and now we have an 18 year old who plays with such precision, accuracy and grandeur, and yet does not rush like most modern super virtuosos. I truly believe we have seen the successor to Vladimir Horowitz in the Gold medalist winner of the Van Cliburn 2022 competition!
@@LTD-Limited you have said everything I wanted to express!
@@branden3631 XD really??? I tried to make sure I said he wasn’t the reincarnation of Horowitz. Too many people go around saying so and so pianist is the reincarnation. To that I say no to them, these new pianists are the successors, and Yunchan is the greatest of them all
This is what is playing while soul goes to Heaven
Every time I hear him play, it makes me think about what life is all about.
I scored a ticket to see him play Rachmaninoff 2 with the Pittsburgh Symphony on Sunday 🎹🎹🎹🙃🙃🙃
How was it? I love Yunchan!
부러워요
This is a wonderful experience. I am truly expectant about the show to appear on media. You are very lucky to have that opportunity.
In my country in the local theater this weekend I have the opportunity to listen to Brahms 2nd symphony, is not comparable, but something at least haha
Wow, you're lucky.
In korea, tickets sold out in a second.
I envy you tell us how was it?🙏~~~~

Can't wait to see him next May at the New York Philharmonic🥺🥺 - I bought two tickets for my wife and I ❤
I so envy u
Thank U !! 😊 😁😄😍
I envy you!
Good for you♡
So sweet🥰
I've often wondered what it would have been like to have been a witness to performances by Mozart, Chopin or Liszt, knowing full well that you were in the presence of greatness, and grateful that you were born in their time. Yunchan Lim. Now I know.
I can't agree with you more!!!
And I am going to get to hear him live in a few days in a small venue in Colorado. Can’t believe my luck!!!
@@GarySchmidtPianist Fantastic! Enjoy every moment. I hope to see him one day as well.
I find myself back here, watching this video again............
Marin and Yunchan have such great chemistry, not to mention the orchestra. How they melded together made this musical piece even more enchanting and his performance more gripping. I really appreciate how his expression of music is true and authentic, and not exaggerated or showy. What a precious moment to witness when his innocent charm and humility shine through as he is faced with such a thunderous ovation, every bit of it deserved.
With rising fame and demands put upon him from all over the world, I hope he will always be surrounded by a support system with those who truly care about him. He is so young and as he still continues to develop as a person and an artist, can’t help but to want to protect him and his musical soul. Wishing Yunchan all the best and goodness and the strength to power through any obstacles that may come his way.
I am touched by your honest comment. your care and love for him . his innocent heart will stay with him forever because it is himself.
@@kunokdureau6464Appreciate that. I have faith in what you say. Right now, as Yunchan goes through a downtime due to hand strain, I hope his team will handle it in his best interest long term..
Still getting blown away every time I listen to this… and it’s been 2 months

Beyond words is this young man's talent. I am a professional musician and am humbled.
I agree. I'm not a musician, but I'm a well-educated listener, and I'm blown away!
This is the most beautiful Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3.
동의합니다!
2 months later I find myself coming back every single day
Could never get tired of Yun Chan’s playing

absolutely
Heard him last night with New York Phil. He played it totally different!!!!! It was so electrifying. The audience was in awe. I was laughing when it ended because I couldn’t make sense of what I had just seen and heard!!!
Must have been amazing to hear him in person. I’ve heard this piece dozens of times, and Rachmaninoff is my favorite composer. I’ve never heard a pianist, ever, who captured the heart of Rachmaninoff’s harmonic language with such precision and passion. His interpretation is everything I love about the composer distilled into a single, masterful performance. I am also in awe. There is nothing one can do but laugh in amazement.
As an addendum, this conductor is incredible! Without her, I don’t think this performance is possible.
His Ossia cadenza was absolutely MAGNIFICENT!
@@angelyac7759 Yes indeed. It was every bit delectable
@@augustuscall5562 I agree🤓❤️🤩 Who knew? Marin Alsop and Yunchan Lim, a match made in heaven!
Hard to believe what I've seen and heard... An artist who's 4 years younger than me doing something that I might not be able to achieve even 40 years later... Not to mention the perfect technique he has but the boldness and maturity... I can see how he led the conductor and the orchestra here and pulled out dramas together. DEEP RESPECT TO YOU, Yunchan!
I have checked out you channel before a few years ago and I recognized your name here in the comments. You are a very fine pianist btw ;)
Alsop and Lim should go on tour together. Their chemistry is magical!
I think they should.
When this young man is on stage making music, you suddenly realize that there is much more going on. Suddenly there is something incredible, perhaps even supernatural in the room that he brings into the presence of all listeners with his playing. It really is a miracle - performed by a young person.
This fact should bring us ALL together and make us marvel at the great wonders and beauties that a single person is able to bring into the world.
really agreed. he changed many things
9:57, 10:24 love how he lets the orchestra take part in this musical dialogue rather than just highjack the melody!
Is this what it means to be alive? Because if so, then I’ll cherish every moment of it

Unbelievable! God has given the music world a great gift! I wish him all very best for his life and career, he truly deserves it.
Blessed to be alive to hear this in all of its glory. Amazing what humans are capable of.
It’s not human. :)
Just listened to Yuja's version with Zubin Mehta, and she certainly is a formidable technician with a lot of feeling in her performance. However, I come back to Yunchan's version and appreciate the clarity of his notes - you can hear them all so distinctly. Then there are his quiet moments - almost meditative - which allow the music not to overpower. There's such a display of contrasts in his performance that this concerto is revealed in all its moods and shadings without strain or the performer's ego. I was not a big fan of Rach 3, but Yunchan changed all that.
thank you for sharing your opinion 🙏
Treat yourself now to Rachmaninov playing this himself...... 2 masters at work with a beautiful composition from the Russian soul
