How to set your iron on the ground at address - Golf tip

- How does your iron golf club sit on the ground at address? Many golfers set the soul of the golf club flat on the ground, but that is not correct. If you put the club flat on the ground, the club may close because the toe hits the ground and not the heel. Tom explains why it is better to set the iron golf club a bit on its heel.

What an eye opener. Been losing power since I've been addressing the club completely flat. Went in the garage and hit a few 7 irons and went from 130 carry to 140 carry. Use to hit inside alot and some reason this has made impact more towards the sweet spot. Great vid and advice!
Thank you for your kind words, Diego!
Can't tell you how glad I am to hear you say this as it confirms what I've been doing even though the self proclaimed expert at Drummonds Golf told me that my problem was that my club wasn't flat on the ground. Of course he tried to sell me very expensive clubs and I've been seriously considering doing so. Thanks so much, no sale Drummond man.
LOL!
thanks a lot! this is what I've been trying to figure out!
Great lesson , delivered in an easy to understand way for someone new to good like myself . Loving the channel ⛳️🏌️
Thank you for your kind words Andrew! Welcome to We Play Golf!
I love what you did with this video.... you said what we should and most importantly WHY. Many golf instructors just say... do this... don't do that.... but do not take the little extra time to say WHY. Thank you!
Again so underrated, thank you.
Thanks Brock D! Spread the word 😃
Very well explain and a great tip. Thanks for the video.

Perfect timing. Thank you
Always nice to hear from you, bobber!
This helped me in soooooo many ways I can't thank you enough.
You're welcome!
Eye opening!!! Thank you for the tips!!!
Thank you a lot. Very useful tip
What a discovery! I'm surprised there was not more tutorials on this exact point. I've been very conscious about placing the club head flat and that explained why my shots are not that great despite correct swing and grip.
Thank you Sir .
I never knew this. I’m a 12 handicap and have been playing once to twice a week for about three years. I started doing this the last 3 rounds and range sessions and the results were pretty drastic. I have more power, the height on my ball is something I haven’t experienced before, and I finally can feel myself compressing the ball. Swing feels smooth. I’m also make great contact on majority of shots (I still have the random shank but definitely not as many)! Thank you for this tip!
THANK YOU!
My exact problem.
All the way from Korea, thank you for this. I just shared this to multiple golfer friends (Mostly EXPATS). Trying this tomorrow morning.
Thank you so much Charles Lee!
Great explanation and visual examples, thanks!

3000x bedankt voor deze tip/instructie. Heb nu veel meer regelmaat. Super.
Super! Bedankt om mij dit te laten weten!

great advice - thanks!
You're welcome Tobias!
Oh gosh. That’s brilliant. Aged 73 and never knew that . No wonder my iron shots are frustrating and inconsistent. Many thanks.
You're welcome Necia!
This was something I was struggling with by have impact closer to the toe. This slight adjustment helped me to hit center of the face easier.
The video makes sense and is easy to understand.
Thank you Clyde. That's the intention of our videos: keep it simple ans short :)
Great explanation! I would also add that by doing this, it will generate more club head speed that will translate into a little more distance.
Thank you very much! This video is very underrated. I went to top golf last week and I could get my irons off the ground
Thank you, Darius!
Excellent explanation of how that works. Should the driver toe be slightly up as well? I would think it might if the same thing happens on the downswing
Unbelievable thank you
Great tip! Thank you!
Thank you Blix TV!
This change everything😀🙌
Thanks A lot sir this really improve my golf swing regards from Indonesia
Thank you Andhika Akase!
This is a very advanced detail that showcase how you are dedicated to golf. Thanks for sharing, I do know now how to make straight shots
Thank you for your kind words!
@@Weplaygolf my pleasure! Keep sharing knowledge with us.
This is the little thing that I skipped, thank you for reminding me. :) Will try on the range next time
You’re welcome!
Great video.
Thanks!
Great advice!
Thanks!
I knew there was something I was doing wrong - getting those horrible shots to the right. Thanks for this video - will take it to the range & the course!
Thank you for watching Kay!
Eindelijk eens iemand die het duidelijk uitlegt se
Thanks!
Thank you very much Dr_Chad ThunderCock The 3rd!
did this today at the range trying different set-ups.
ohh my lord the sensation of the middle face is addictive as hell, had to buy a second bucket to try with the whole bag😂😂
Ok great thnks, so easy now...
Hmm good point!
This is a great tip
Thank you!
❤❤❤❤❤❤ thank you🎉🎉🎉
I found this out for myself more by accident than anything else but its so good to have it verified thank you and keep up the great vids
Thank you !
You're welcome Mike!
Just found this channel. Nice tip, thank you! I've just subscribed to you, too.
Thank you so much Matt!
Wow!!! I never knew that.
Thank you for letting me know that!
Thank you for this lesson. I'm doing exactly what you said. Hitting the ball off toe and to the right. I'll give this a shot. I switched from ping i20s to Titleist ap2 710. Have been struggling with the the long irons. I'm hitting it off the toe and everything sprays to the right.
Have you tried swing the club out more ?
@Justin Damico thanks for the question. Are you saying to sweep the club back or deeper when starting the backswing?
Hello. Thank for the video. I’ve just been range and a definite improvement with cleaner strikes. However everything seemed to have fade on it. Ami opening the face maybe? Or perhaps too much with the slight space off ground at the toe? Really good advice cheers again always wondered about this actually.
Ball curve is controlled by swing path… you might be coming “over the top”. The club face tells you the ball direction after impact. If you start the ball on line, then get a fade, the club face is good; it’s the swing path that might need attention. Depends on what kind of shot shape you prefer. If the ball starts left of target, then fades, the club face is shut AND there’s swing path concerns. If the ball starts right of target, and turns further right, that’s when the club face is open. Make sure you set up to your target, then see what the ball does. Remember, ball curve is controlled by swing path. Where the ball starts tells you club face direction at impact.
I used to put head closed to left, may habit often make bad hit iron, i’ll try your tip tks
The softer the shaft is the more this comes into play. The more speed the swing has makes the shaft bend more. As the club comes into impact the center of mass in the clubhead is trying to line up with the shaft. I have a hybrid with a regular shaft but a soft tip. I have to setup with the ball almost on the hosel or I hit it off the toe.
Great tip gonna try this. Never really considered lie Angle at address
This is an area that I often neglect. Thanks for the reminder.
You're welcome! Keep watching and learn!
How should a driver and fairway woods sit on the ground.I like the way you explain the irons sitting on the ground.
A wood and driver are more rounded...
We made a video about it for a hybrid, it is the same for a wood or driver:
ua-cam.com/video/dnD0Xmlt_Sk/v-deo.html
Thank you very much for this. You see, i have a very low self esteem and i thought i was doing it wrong (this video is what my swing looks like) but then i went to a pro and he changed my swing completely ng my irons are flat. Since then ive score worse than ever, everytime i switch back to my old swing, my shot is good but my pro insists to keep it flat since that is the right address according to him but the result is awful most of the time.
This is achieved by getting the club in the correct position at set up
Getting those hands lower than most people have them achieves the club sitting up
Just grabbed a club and through a coin down ( Don't have Euros in my part of the world) and found I wasn't touching the coin at setup already
Could help I had a lesson last month and we started on set up position
I hit the ball so much better addressing the ball with the toe up slightly, however, when I went for a few lessons recently the instructor wanted me to drop the toe and address the ball with the club flat. It's difficult to go against what you're being told by a pro.
Thanks. Ball slightly towards the heel could cause shanks ?
I've always laid my club toe down, i guess thats why I'm not consistent with my irons. I'm going to try this out real soon. Thanks, nice video.
Thank you Christopher. Try it and you will see some nice results!
Cool shoes!
Thanks Carl!
Just got a set of t300’s, my old Wilson staffs use to be flat on the ground and I was lowkey freaking out that cause my t300s toe sits just above
Thanks for clarify mate xxx
🍻🍻🍻 thank you than you!
You're welcome!
This was definitely helpful ! Thank You. Still having two pieces in the puzzle to get a perfect set up. Should i leave the face fractionally open as it sits behind the ball understanding that in this way it would be square at the moment of impact ? And should i place the ball fractionally towards the heel to enable a center contact at the moment of impact ? Tks if you cld comment...
Hi Tuubimun, I would keep it as simple as possible, so keep the club face square on target and the ball central to the sweet spot, I know that this will help you to get it consistent and simple.
But should you do that with your wedges aswell? Anyone knows?
Very good advice. However would the same apply if the ball was above or below your feet.?
Hi John, good question! As you need to adjust your posture and or shorten your grip position you could do the same thing. But as you have hybrids, I would suggest you to play those clubs in these lies.
Hi Tom, please could you do a video on the reverse pivot and provide some drills to fix it. Thanks
Hi Morris, we'll try that soon for you!
@@Weplaygolf Thanks Tom, looking forward to it
Hello Morris, we just published your requested video! Check it out at ua-cam.com/video/Wl4qPV6h6Vw/v-deo.html
Good info, I just started thinking about this
Glad to help!
Great video. Hybrids and Woods flat?
Thanks Michael! Because of the roundness of the hybrids and woods, the club won't open when you address them flat...
Wouldn't shaft stiffness affect how much it deviates on the downswing and affect the angle you're discussing? I use stiff shafts and find I have more success when I have the lie angle flat at address. I have one club that is regular flex and I tend to hit hooks with it unless I ease up on the swing. 🤔
Hi Mark!
First of all Happy Healthy New Year.
Thanks for your question and remarks. Yes of course this will have a serious affect on the shaft flex bend and torque! Also the kick point in your shaft will have a impact on it, but saying all this, there will always be reaction at impact which will give a more uprighted position as to adres position due to your speed, whatever that will be…
so when you get fitted the seller should check that for you!
Just tried this and it changed everything
In a good way Ihope? :)
Thank you for the tip. I'm going to try it next time that I go out to the range.
Thank you for watching William
it's called shaft droop. torque is when the shaft twists. Enjoyed the lesson btw thanks :)
Thank you, q!
I presume this is also true of fairway woods at set up because the shafts are typcially graphite with some flex. Correct?
By the way, great channel and content. You are very good at explaining the game.
Hi Jason! No, it is not the same for woods because the bottom of the club is more bowed and therefore it can sit more up or down.
@@Weplaygolf Thanks! Your content is the best and this particular video is very helpful.
so how should driver and longer clubs be at address
Hi Vernon , because of the shape of the soul of these clubs ( they are rounded) you could be more upright or flattened but truly, I would advise you to do the same 👍
Would you want the toe up slightly on the hybrids also?
I will publish a video about the hybrid position next week!
Such a simple thing to fix but before this fix would lose so much distance
Does the same also apply to the hybrid or the wood?
Not exactly. For a hybrid (and a wood is almost the same) we made another video:
ua-cam.com/video/dnD0Xmlt_Sk/v-deo.html
Dit geldt zeker ook voor de driver en fairway woods? Sla mijn ijzers met swingspeed van tussen de 92 en 94 miles/hr.
De driver en fairway woods zijn veel ronder van vorm aan de onderkant. Er zit wel meer flex op de shaft, maar bij woods de gevolgen veel minder groot.
Is it the same principal for driver and fairway woods?
Not really because the bottom of the club is more bowed and therefore it can sit more up or down...
This probably explains why I keep shanking my irons to the right. Gonna try it next time!
Thank you for your comment! Let me know if it worked for you!
Only do this with the less offset irons I supposed
yes , it is true but I believe only with clubs that have a graphite shaft. The ones in alluminium will bend on the down swing much less
There is less bend, but there is always a bend in the shaft.
torque is twisting, that is droop of shaft👍
When I leave space on my irons I always slice the ball. When I push my hands forward slightly and keep the head level I can literally hit my 4 iron 200 yards most of the time. I’ve watched tons of videos with this same technique and It just doesn’t work for me. I know I’m probably leaving my hands or rather the club face open which is causing the slice.
This is where club fitting comes into play, I guess. Length and lie angle. I am 164 cm and I realised this after I got the lengths shortened.
Are these universal for wedges to Long irons?
Hey Kenny lee No it’s not really the same as your irons. Wedges can be adressed differently, you could set them more towards the toe to have less bounce when playing from hard ground and you can open them more to get more loft …
But for a normal shot it would be the same.
Does this work the same with hybrids?
Hi, No it is not the samen because the hybrid had a rounded soul, so it is less important with that club.

Thanks!

Ok, I’ll get my iPhone face down too and try this.
Why my all irons hit same distance around 150?
Mostly because you release the shaft way to early... that means that the energy of the club is gone to fast in the downswing, this fault becomes bigger with longer clubs.
Merci, à l'impact ma balles va plus loin
