Enjoying the vids Chris keep up the good work. Strikes me that placements, especially ones like your psychiatry one seem a little lonely and isolating. Is that the reality? If so what’s your coping mechanisms? I start med school this year, any tips welcomed 😎
Thanks so much, Kieran! My current psychiatry placement is very different from what my placements are usually like. Placements based centrally in Edinburgh typically have a lot of students in the department at any given time, which has a great sense of community. However, sometimes when you’re on peripheral placements that are not a commutable distance from Edinburgh (like East Kilbride or Dumfries for me), you can be with 1-2 other students. In my case the other student i’m with is off this week so it’s just me. So my answer to your question is that it’s a mix of experiences. For me, I find the placements really engaging and it’s great to visit other areas of Scotland. You also receive more 1-to-1 teaching when on peripheral placements which is great. My main approach during peripheral placements is to regularly exercise, regularly call friends/family, and I also have study sessions with my coursemates online like doing MCQs together. I hope that all helps!

Hi Tanudipta, thanks for watching! From personal experience, I think that working for the NHS in the staff bank is a great option for any medical student. I currently work as a hospital porter, but you could also work as a healthcare assistant for instance. However, you can do any part-time job that you like as long as you can balance it with your studies appropriately. I hope that helps! Feel free to ask any other questions.

Hey Chris! I'm a prospective student and was just wondering if in 5th and 6th year there is any NHS provided accommodation at edinburgh? just because I know in bristol there is :) thanks !
Hi Maria,
Thank you for the comment! Edinburgh Medical School do provide free NHS accommodation when on peripheral placements. Generally, peripheral placements are placements that are outside NHS Lothian. I've really liked the accommodation so far (so far i've had accommodation in Kirkcaldy, East Kilbride, and Dumfries). This type of accommodation can also be provided in your 4th year of medicine (the first clinical year). I hope that helps! Just let me know if you have any other questions!
