Now we need one of the band members doing a reaction video. "Experimental Metal Bassist reacts to 'Fredrik Thordandal - Playthrough: Meshuggah "Do Not Look Down"
+KhronX Bleed is easy once you learn to quad pick. Most of us who started out playing Metallica and Pantera and the like want to play the classic triplet followed with a downward stroke, and Bleed is fucking impossible like that. Up down up down. It feels wierd at first but then it becomes natural, flows and Bleed becomes effortless.
It's just meshuggah metal, they stand alone when it comes to styles. Nobody can ever stack up to these fellas. I love and hate that, cause I want more of this music, but we only have them, which also makes them the best of the best.
Gojira is great as metal metal, Meshuggah is great as downtuned prog metal. IMO best two bands of the genre. Nothing was listened as much as these two legends by my ears. Onse again IMHO.
I can't believe this video was done. thank you toontrack, this is incredible insight on modern secrets of fantastic tone. I must get that drum pack, sooo thick sounding!!!
Meshuggah are Gods of metal scene! You are my inspiration! Do not look down is my favourite track of all times since release in 2012! Thank you for this masterpiece! PS. Ringtone also - Do not look down!)
If you want to play Meshuggah the way the band itself does, it does take some technical skill. You need to be able to strum, mute and bend the strings with the right amount of force and enough endurance. Bleed is a good example of this.
Yes, that is correct from what I understand. They just tune their basses up so that the bass and guitar are playing in the same octave. It's the difference in the way the 2 instruments handle tone and how they come together that gives them their signature sound.
To the videographer : musicians generally don't appreciate a million different camera angles. Pro-tip : if the left hand is doing something interesting; don't focus on the right.
In fact, that is exactly how the bends should look. That's how it looks when you play ON time. You have to lay back on the click so to speak. If you knew how to play this well you'd understand.@@fleagalisyourdaddy
It's exactly what he said I have the transcript.. from high to low like he says in the vid it's Ab, Eb, Bb, F, Bb. When the guitars are in F he plays his bass on the 2nd bass string. 7 string parts he can play the low Bb to be an octave lower... 8 string parts the bass and guitar are in the same octave.
…and here is Fredrik Thordendal in a playthrough of the same track using all Toontrack sounds and tools! Playthrough: Meshuggah "Do Not Look Down", Toontrack version
blackjackmcgack It feels really weird when you play bass for a couple days and then pick up a guitar... If you wanted a really bad simile it would be like easting spaghetti with hair instead of noodles.
Very cool video. I've been relying on Line 6 to find the tone I'm after for a long time and despite being good, I always feel it could be better. Might have to have a look at EZMix instead
I Play Drums and have sat in on studio recordings as well. People think it's as easy as hitting the "Little Red Record Button" and they couldn't be more wrong. Producers are damn near the modern composers of today's music. \m/ Rock on Brother! \m/
dude its not that easy...i got the EZmix2 and 6 expansions today, i've been tinkering with it all day long and it is incredibly hard to pull off this exact same sound unless you intentionally try to replicate it
Meshuggah solos are like....ok this is simple...then “men nen nen men nen na na da an nen men da nen men” lol...little harder than I thought. Good shit
They use a 5 string tuned lo to hi Bb F Bb Eb Ab,because the lo F would be too low for us too hear he pretty much doubles the guitar parts but with a different timbre.
They are just using it as an example to what their software does. Just plug in your guitar and go from that to the Kolos sound without the need for any other gear.
Yeah, Combustion is in F so Dick plays the main riff on the F and Eb string just like the guitars. I got a bit confused but it's just like the others 8-string songs actually. And I also think Fredrik tunes it up a half step so it's the same as on the guitar.
why is the clean guitar part in the beginning and end not in the normal song...you should do a remaster of this song and add it. It adds so much character.
MrHieronymusBosch You're joking, right? Meshuggah are incredibly innovative - quite the opposite of generic. They essentially crated their own sub-genre of metal, and pioneered how to make ungroovable meters methodically groovable.
MrHieronymusBosch if you find Meshuggah boring, that's one thing - I used to think that too before I understood what was going on musically, but to call them "generic" is pretty bold. I don't see how such an innovative, influential band can be considered generic when they're 1) Not only the forefathers of a genre, but 2) They're still leading the pack. It's not like they pioneered the genre and just disappeared; they're still evolving and incredibly relevant. And rhythmically speaking, Vildhjarta doesn't hold a candle to Meshuggah.. Vildhjarta is awesome, and they use a lot of syncopation and displacement in their riffs, but there isn't anything too crazy. It's actually pretty straight-forward if you ask me, whereas Meshuggah consistently implements trippy polymeters into their riffs, whilst retaining a groovy/percussive quality.
Trying to learn this one and my fingers are just not having it. Guess that's what I get for not touching my guitar for a few years lol.I'll get it eventually!
I can see all this stuff being useful for demo's or just getting an idea of what you want to sound like, but I wouldn't use it for an actual recording. Except for superior drummer. That shit sounds legit.
A tad expensive. Supperior Drummer 2.0: €259 Metal Foundry SDX: €159 EzMix 2: €139 Metal Gods: €39 Koloss Preset: €12 (presumably) = €608 It's well worth it, however I'd really like to see you guys just put together a big pack with drums, expansions, drum presets, ezmix and some ezmix settings and sell that with a bit of discount.
The sound resulting from this epitome of processed guitar playing, though still pretty sweet, was improved upon on the latest album. And, let's be honest, the YT commentariat has been quite split over the sound of the last few albums up to Violent Sleep, whereas the latter has received less criticism. Just food for thought-obviously guitar gear is a different question than the overall production process.
Well normally they play bass in Bb F Bb Eb Ab and when they play on their low F he just plays his second string and when they switch to their 7 string material he can play his low Bb and be an octave lower for some real rumble, I was j/w if he was using the 4 string tuned up a half step but yep .. he is.. those must be some light bass string to tune up like that. I KNOW even the 36" scale bass's I've seen can't play in octave below F just because of the tonality and low it is.
“Let’s see. Who’s this cat covering Meshuggah? Will he do it justice? Oh wait...it’s Thorendal himself?!? Score!”
Yeah he’s doing a half decent job covering it
Now we need one of the band members doing a reaction video.
"Experimental Metal Bassist reacts to 'Fredrik Thordandal - Playthrough: Meshuggah "Do Not Look Down"
@@forwonder 😂😂😂
Like all Meshuggah songs, the key to playing this song is RELAXING. (and practice)
And hear it like a million times to realize what's going on lol
All Meshuggah songs, with the exception of Bleed x)
+KhronX Bleed is easy once you learn to quad pick. Most of us who started out playing Metallica and Pantera and the like want to play the classic triplet followed with a downward stroke, and Bleed is fucking impossible like that.
Up down up down.
It feels wierd at first but then it becomes natural, flows and Bleed becomes effortless.
Khron's Cave bro bleed is like their easiest song to learn
You nailed it with any song....relax and play. I’ve seen too many guitarist try to force it...go to let it flow.
Good cover, this guy should probably join a band or make an album solo
I can't believe we got such an incredible close-up on the solo...
This is the most beautiful groove metal polyrythmic song my ears have been fortunate to ever hear.
Have you heard their other songs mate?
demiurge has entered the chat
I want to note, that it is polymetric and not polyrhythmic. =)
Soul Burn is groovy as fuk too 🤘🏼
It's just meshuggah metal, they stand alone when it comes to styles. Nobody can ever stack up to these fellas. I love and hate that, cause I want more of this music, but we only have them, which also makes them the best of the best.
To hear distortion sounding that clear and those drums thick and beefy. It's such a dream.
Obzen, Kolloss, The Violent Sleep of Reason, those albums combined with God Of War games is just a perfection
Goku the violent sleep of reason isn't very good. Koloss is just fine. Obzen is mmmmmm lovely.
Koloss is ear sex. Hardcore BDSM, Throatfucking ear sex.
Awesome ones
Max Dyer You have no fucking clue mate
God of war? D00M my guy DOOOOOOOM
Once you truly stop and listen what Mushuggah does, you truly get to like them. Not everyone understands that
One you pop acid and listen to "I", you never come out of the trip
Poly-rhythms over 4/4?
Honestly
Fredrick is probably one of the best guitarist composition wise
this comment is a bit arrogant but true
Meshuggah = the lords of metal
Meshuggah and Gojira.
Lords of djent
Alien Gods of metal
Gojira is great as metal metal, Meshuggah is great as downtuned prog metal. IMO best two bands of the genre. Nothing was listened as much as these two legends by my ears. Onse again IMHO.
Seriously one of the best product placement, product feature, and instrument cover videos ive ever seen
I don't know how meshuggah is the same band without Fredrik, his leads and solos are so unique and even his songwriting makes up alot of their sound
Yes man.
I just love his choice of notes. One of the unique styles, pretty much like Holdsworth but fits well with Meshuggah Sound
If you can't see the pure skill and creativity expressed in metal music, then there's no hope for you.
I can't believe this video was done. thank you toontrack, this is incredible insight on modern secrets of fantastic tone. I must get that drum pack, sooo thick sounding!!!
Meshuggah is one of the most influential metal bands up there with metallica
MAN THIS IS AMAAAAZING he shows you all the little details... the octave part is AMAZING man what a piece...
3:25 That part makes my mind travel to a oniric world; hearing the underlying repeated clean chords beneath it more cleary makes it even more so
Meshuggah are Gods of metal scene! You are my inspiration! Do not look down is my favourite track of all times since release in 2012! Thank you for this masterpiece!
PS. Ringtone also - Do not look down!)
The solo feels so out of left field but perfect as well for this tune. My favorite solo of thorendals
If you want to play Meshuggah the way the band itself does, it does take some technical skill. You need to be able to strum, mute and bend the strings with the right amount of force and enough endurance. Bleed is a good example of this.
He gets so into it! I love it
Does anyone else notice the awesome reference to Bleed with that clean preset? Amazing Meshuggah
Love those little half bends in the verse riff! The groove is real!!
Yes, that is correct from what I understand. They just tune their basses up so that the bass and guitar are playing in the same octave. It's the difference in the way the 2 instruments handle tone and how they come together that gives them their signature sound.
I would love to hear this song with "the violent Sleep Of Reason" tone, it's so thick and punchy
To the videographer : musicians generally don't appreciate a million different camera angles. Pro-tip : if the left hand is doing something interesting; don't focus on the right.
This is probably the coolest thing I´ve seen in years. Wow!
Me too
Happy late Birthday Mr. Thordendal!
Oh my god you lucky fuck, you have Meshuggah's signature M8M! :P
ShadowMassacr13 urmm... :p
I wonder where he got it 🤔
That bass is nasty. Such crunch.
It plays the same notes as the rhythm guitar as to bring out the fullness. An eight string guitar in drop E tuning is the same as a bass's standard E.
and he plays it so effortlessly \m/
Everyone complains about the sync of video and audio feed but I never see what they are talking about
Dan Hahn watch the bends
In fact, that is exactly how the bends should look. That's how it looks when you play ON time. You have to lay back on the click so to speak. If you knew how to play this well you'd understand.@@fleagalisyourdaddy
Slow it down to 1/2 speed @ the breakdown at 3:30 and bring it back to normal speed once it's done and the drums come back... You're welcome!
The drums fade out purposefully
That solo is sooooo cool
This is an ABSOLUTE dream come true.
He's good, yes, but can he play heart shaped box?
Made me giggle
fanboy?
will have to get this! Sounds amazing!
Class video!!
Nobody else does solos like *Fredrik Thohrdendal.*
Oh my god, what a huge ass difference 720p makes!
Also, anyone else noticed that the clean riff at 4:18 is the 'Bleed' interlude section? :D
10 years later and we got 8k UA-cam videos 😅😂
Ironic that the album was recorded using built-in sims in cubase... and sounds better
Most likely because it was mixed and mastered to perfection, as opposed to this video just showcasing what the EZMix can do.
I agree, it's not a knock on you at all- moreso just commenting on how good built-in amp sims have gotten nowadays.More of a small knock on ezmix
Me too :D Its just so nice to look and to play also !
Awesome!
…and here is Fredrik Thordendal in a playthrough of the same track using all Toontrack sounds and tools!
Playthrough: Meshuggah "Do Not Look Down", Toontrack version
is he playing bass also?
Yes.
incredible
These swedish boys sure take their metal seriously.
He can play Bass too? Omfg, such lord
I'd imagine it's probably pretty easy to transition when um... You're already playing the same notes.
Bob Jones Yeah it is haha i recently bought a bass.
Moving from bass to guitar would be harder i guess..
blackjackmcgack It feels really weird when you play bass for a couple days and then pick up a guitar... If you wanted a really bad simile it would be like easting spaghetti with hair instead of noodles.
Bob Jones Yeah true.
Guitars feel tiny after that haha
I wouldn't mind having a 30" 8 string fora while
(I'm an 8 string player) and a bass
I wish I had an eight string... I love my guitar but I can't play along to any of the Meshuggah songs. ;-;
Just yes, many times yes!!!
Very cool video. I've been relying on Line 6 to find the tone I'm after for a long time and despite being good, I always feel it could be better. Might have to have a look at EZMix instead
Is he playing his M8M? Sounds beastly...and that setup on it looks sooo smooth. Groove machine!
That beginning part reminds me of Bleed.
Michael Borg because it is
That's because it IS bleed
Hmm, thought so too. Looks epic! I've been looking at a 550D myself :P .
messhuggah and toontrack is the shit
I never noticed the clean melody from Bleed in this song until this video..
Yes you do.
ahh man i love toontrack.
the tone used on Koloss has fuckin oomph, love it
I love ToonTrack products! They are beast! We need a singer man hit us up! WE are Cathedrals
4:20 goosebumbs intensifies...
I have excellent sound with very low price ;-)
Thank you Toontrack
Greetings from Greenland

Epicness! Now I really want to get EZmix 2 :P . Just wondering, what camera was used to film this? The quality looks amazing!
Cool blues solo.
They own that shit! dam!
That makes sense
dude its not that easy...i got the EZmix2 and 6 expansions today, i've been tinkering with it all day long and it is incredibly hard to pull off this exact same sound unless you intentionally try to replicate it

reading your responses to people is way too funny hahaha
Master
Agreed 110%
the man
I feel like a heretic to say this... but does anyone else feel like this version sounds better than the actual record.
Cool using the bleed clean part
And kids! This is how u use a 8 strings guitar!! Use all of those strings!! Not some generic deathcore!!!!!
MrHieronymusBosch atleast they used all strings :v
MrHieronymusBosch You're joking, right? Meshuggah are incredibly innovative - quite the opposite of generic. They essentially crated their own sub-genre of metal, and pioneered how to make ungroovable meters methodically groovable.

MrHieronymusBosch "95% of meshuggah songs are generic" The fuck are you on?
Uhhhh... I love Meshuggah but they practically only use the bottom strings apart from the ambient parts and drones.
its not its only in this video to show you the clean preset
Fucking MASTER. One of metals finest!
Trying to learn this one and my fingers are just not having it. Guess that's what I get for not touching my guitar for a few years lol.I'll get it eventually!
Anything can be music, whether somebody likes it or not. Music is completely subjective.
I can see all this stuff being useful for demo's or just getting an idea of what you want to sound like, but I wouldn't use it for an actual recording. Except for superior drummer. That shit sounds legit.
Fredric has 2 of the most quiet hands i have ever seen.
Behold the Koloss Guitar Cookie Molds!
A tad expensive.
Supperior Drummer 2.0: €259
Metal Foundry SDX: €159
EzMix 2: €139
Metal Gods: €39
Koloss Preset: €12 (presumably)
= €608
It's well worth it, however I'd really like to see you guys just put together a big pack with drums, expansions, drum presets, ezmix and some ezmix settings and sell that with a bit of discount.
Dont confuse him, they use standard tuning, half step down, so the bass is F, A#, D#...etc.
Wait, isn't that the clean riff from bleed?? How did I not notice that before???
So I know the guitar is in standard one half step down
F-A#-D#-G#-C#-F-A#-d#
Is the bass tuned up to F-A#-D#-G#?
Love my 8, I wonder what bass tuning he's using? It doesn't seem to be the 5 string drop B they normally play with
wow
yea he is the best at that sound for that type of metal i like meshuggah just as much as attack attack and there should be nothing wrong with that
Well normally they play bass in Bb F Bb Eb Ab and when they play on their low F he just plays his second string and when they switch to their 7 string material he can play his low Bb and be an octave lower for some real rumble, I was j/w if he was using the 4 string tuned up a half step but yep .. he is.. those must be some light bass string to tune up like that. I KNOW even the 36" scale bass's I've seen can't play in octave below F just because of the tonality and low it is.
Yeah it sounds like it's the clean part from Bleed, but with higher pitch and with the tempo from this song.
