    I really dont know why other people keep comparing Garmin to Gshock watches, I have more of these master of G models, long story short, for feature rich software experience go to Garmin, for durability and as a survival watch go Gshock, I also have the GPRH more than a month now, its a survival tool, use power saving to use the watch indefinitely and use only sensors in the wild as needed, use smart functions if you have the luxury of battery life, but in a situation where battery life is crucial then use power save mode then use sensors accordingly in a survival situation, please stop comparing Garmin and Gshocks, these are two diferent things, Gshocks are built with layers of structure for durability not much on smart features but just enough smart features..

      Gshocks are not a survival tool. A Garmin Instinct 2X Solar is more feature rich, accurate and lasts forever as well. I would trust my Garmin more as a "survival" tool. It comes also with an LED light.
      I tried this Gshock, it's trash for its price. It has the potential, but so many things are just not thought out well enough. Simply doing workouts is not as great as with a Garmin.

      I have bought both watches, Garmin Instinct 2x solar and the Casio. The GPR-1000 looks much better, but Garmin has more functions and accuracy for less money (I paid only 300 Euros). The comparison between both watches is OK because Casio sells it as a sports watch! And in this price range, the Casio is crap! So I'll return the Casio and keep the Garmin! And even as a survival tool I would buy the original Rangeman instead of the GPR-1000!

      @@Axatron8001 there is a reason why I did not get the GPR-B1000, it would be lengthy if I told you here, I would still prefer the GPRH as a survival tool..

    Grew up with Casio & G-Shocks & a long time user. As growing older I need to be more active to keep myself fit. Started looking for a G-Shock for gym + hiking + rucking + other outdoor activities.
    This is when I found that Garmin does it miles better - got rid of a GW-9400 Rangeman & a Protrek to fund towards a Garmin Fenix. Many of the Garmin features should've appeared in G-Shocks ages ago. Now Casio is just many miles behind Garmin.

      as someone having Fenix 7x for long outdoor sessions, Apple Watch Ultra for daily work and of course, the 9400 for the lulz, i am agree with you. current Casio 'smart' watches are just comparable to the ancient Fenix 3😂, no offense here. but hey, i might getting this new Rangeman, the design..i like..alongside the GWG-B1000

      Thing is, at this pricepoint, the G shock badge and look cannot outweigh the cons. Missing features, by more generation. You can get better option for less or more features for this price at the competitors.
      I own a GBD200 which is still pretty much basic, but costs only 130 EUR. At that pricepoint, the somewhat better durability and battery life are a good selling points. For 700 EUR only the mostly devoted will buy this unfortunately.
      And with Casio you are without an ecosystem which Apple, Garmin, etc. have.

  • @freddykruger3320

    I think it is worth noting that a watch like this from g shock will charge on solar power within the day unlike garmin solar (refering to instinct 1) that takes about 2 weeks of sitting outside to charge up. So while the battery in the g shock is smaller and doesnt seem to last as long, the better solar charging keeps it going when you actually get sunlight. The 2 month in smart watch mode is basically indefinite. The 2 years on regular watch mode is absolute basic power saving sitting in a dark room, even an hour of sunlight a year would be enough to keep it going. Thats the difference between garmin and g shock, no gimmicks on the watch that dont live up to the advertising. It is easy to put features in a watch that don't work, but casio has been making solar powered, gps and heart rate monitoring watches since the 80s before our phones lost their chords and gained touch screens.

    • @morepanicboy7120
      @morepanicboy7120 3 місяці тому +2

      Of course you're comparing the solar charging to the instinct 1. Instinct 2x has much better solar charging, you can even see in some reviews that it does charge up the battery so the claim isn't some bs. And the 2x is much more capable as a smart/fitness watch. There's no saving grace for this g shock except durability, let's be honest.

    I was a huge G-Shock fan. I still have a collection of them including the original Rangeman. They are good reliable watches before all these smart watches became main stream. I now have an Garmin Epix 2 and I wear that watch everyday. I think G-Shock is still kinda stuck in the 90s. They definitely need to make a lot of improvements and catch up with the times.
    Their phone app is just hot garbage. I had a GDB-H2000. While the watch is nice and wears very comfortably, the phone app is just disgusting to use. Also, they need to keep releasing software updates to their watches. It is no longer acceptable to just release a watch and then forget about it.

      couldn’t agree more man. i love casio and have a small collection of casios both g shocks and pro treks. after being given an apple watch i just can’t really justify wearing them anymore except for special circumstances. once i buy a garmin fenix i don’t think i’ll ever buy another watch. i just wish casio would build something closer to a fenix. if they did, i along with many others would buy it. but instead they stick to all these collaborations and insane color-ways and model variations. they must just want to stick to the formula that has worked for them.

      my gbdh1000 is on update 9. Theyre currently moving it over to the new casio app and away from g shock move as they have done with the other watches. THey are developing their own in house operating systems and apps rather than piggy backing off google etc who notoriously drop their old product lines with a year or two in a bid to sell newer hardware. The watches are designed around efficiency and self sustainability rather than trying to do as much as possible and needing to be taken off to be charged every 7 days. THe solar is the most misunderstood and misrepresented part, garmin solar is a sales gimick while casio's solar actually works within a day.

    I had a ProTrek 3510. I wore it to work for a week and ended up returning it. The bulkiness was too much. The temp sensor kept digging into my arm and the reversed screen wasn't very legible. I ended up getting Garmin Instinct at less than half price of this Gshock and it's night and day. Garmin is so comfortable and very customizable including the buttons, light, etc. Not to mention it's an ABC watch with navigation, and no phone is needed to use those features. Massive practical improvement.
    I'm so impressed with this piece, and it's usability now.
    IMHO, it's an issue that should've been addressed before release in that I believe damage was done to the reputation of both Casio and the Gshock/ Rangeman name.

      I totally get the nostalgia of the G-Shock devices. I think that's why they still have no problem selling them. There is a market of people that don't want an overly "smart" or connected device on their wrist and just want something to tell time, have great battery life, and occasionally track runs while also keeping that distinct look. For me? I tend to look at things a bit more pragmatically and that's where I struggle with the price of this watch.

    Great review. You were able to sum it up pretty good. G-Shock has definitely secured the market on the "durability" need of consumers but still lags behind technology-wise, unfortunately. Was hoping for better from a $500 watch, but wow, the watch is sharp. Garmin has secured the "fitness" need of consumers, but can't compete with the durability of G-Shock even with their Instinct 2X, which is no surprise. I guess it all depends on the buyer's wants and needs, and you covered that perfectly here. I will likely purchase the Instinct 2X Solar Tactical as an everyday health and fitness tracker, but I will wear my G-Shock GW-9400 and my G-Shock Mudmaster GWG-1000 on occasion. I will also keep those G-Shocks close by in the event that nuke takes out my Garmin. Both the Casios and the Garmins have their place. 😏

I love Casio watches, I have a few of them, including the Rangeman GPRB-1000 and the GWG-1000, which are great and are ‘tanks’ of watches, but to me, this offering from Casio is a little half baked. ‘If’ they did their homework on the competition, refined the software, both on the device and within the app, had the ability to connect to external HRM’s etc, and put all that in the form factor of a pro-trek PRW-35, (or similar sized offering), it would be ideal and I would definitely buy it.
    Casio don’t seem serious about getting a foothold in the fitness market, they have the knowledge and could easily have a great product, which could compete with the likes of the Instinct 2X if they wanted to. It’s really disappointing that they don’t seem to be trying. Right now, I’m wearing the Instinct 2X tactical, because it does everything I need, (and then some) and far as I’m concerned, there isn’t a watch out there that can match it, with its features and at its price range.

    Fantastic review, take a Bow sir. Ive just ordered my new ranger from Casio, apparently you cant have the baro trend in top window! Taking a shower is about my limit with exercise, im more into the ABC functions, hoping the baro has a storm alert for sudden pressure. Really hoping im not disappointed with this.

      Yeah, same here, I'm more interested in the ABC side of the watch too, I kind of wish they just stuck with that and didn't include all the fitness stuff in there - they already have a fitness range, they should have kept such features there.

      Fenix 6X Pro here. Bought on release. Used to wear nothing but GShock. Still a fan of them, but there's really no comparing it to a Fenix. I haven't even looked at another watch since. They're not perfect, but very close. I wanted a tough watch that could also be smart, and not require charging every day or two. It fit that bill.

    As many commentators here I used to be G-Shock collector but Casio strategy in last decade made me abandon this sinking ship. It is amazing how such big company is not able to pay for descent app. Why they are so stubborn not to support their watches with firmware upgrades, is beyond me. The technology is obsolete, the endurance is not at the level it used to be and prices are ... well ... in Poland this watch costs 700 dollars exactly the same as Garmin 7X Solar while Garmin Instinct 2X costs less then 500.

    • @ChaseTheSummit
      @ChaseTheSummit  8 місяців тому

      I wouldn't call it a sinking ship! They still sell lots of watches. I think there's a market for them with folks who don't want an overly complicated or connected device on their wrist. For example, you can't use a Garmin, Coros, Polar, or Suunto without activating them in their respective apps first. G-Shock is one of the few that let you just use the watch out of the box and don't require connectivity. Some people still like that. For me? At $500 I want a bit more!

    • @wojciechpatalas6660
      @wojciechpatalas6660 8 місяців тому

      @@ChaseTheSummitI think G-Shock as a brand lost its identity. Real professional users long ago drifted away to Garmin, Suunto, Polar or Coros. And those people are setting trends. Right now if You want to look tough, sporty or rugged You don't wear some overpriced G-Shock, no You wear Fenix. I have few friends who are doing quite advanced trekking and non of them is wearing Casio watch all of them are using some kind of Garmins. Right now Casio is becoming purely fashion brand selling overpriced, multicolor, small watches. And every sport or survival watch is just another catastrophe. I'm afraid Casio will have very rude and unpleasant awakening quite soon. And by the way, in standalone mode any Fenix or Epix is eating any watch from Casio portfolio for breakfast, in my opinion.

    I'd much rather have the Instinct 2X. Especially with it being available for less money than the GPR-H1000. I mean.. €319 vs €500. That's a HUGE difference plus the Garmin is way better when it comes to fitness tracking plus a better app. Oh, and even the Fenix 7 is cheaper than this at €430.

    While I'm a big G-Shock fan, I do completely agree with your comments on the functionality (lack of it!) and the sensors. I have a Garmin Instinct 2 Solar and boy, I think it's a better watch than the GPR-H1000. The GPS was a big letdown IMO while I could not come to terms with the sleep recovery mode.
    The watch looks really cool but it didn't justify the amount that I spent on it. Would have rather spent the same amount on an Instinct 2X Solar.

    The Garmin is really bad looking IMHO, it looks like the design team had no taste while designing it. I like the G-Shock look, they know how to make watches (not GPS's), it is certainly a statement to wear that watch, but I can't imagine sleeping with it to get some sleep metrics :D ITS HUGE! It would probably annoy me to hell when I'm in bed. I also want to say that the G-Shock's screen tech is so much nicer than Garmin's (light-years ahead in clarity, especially if you're visually challenged) - Honestly the GPR-H1000 was never really designed to be a fitness watch, I don't know why they bothered with such features - they should have just suck with Rangeman features and probably reduced the cost by $100 or so. I don't really care to track sleep, heart rate, phone notifications, etc. etc. But I love having a solar compass, barometer, altimeter and the weather prediction algorithm as well as world time which adjusts via GPS, the wonderful display, the ruggedness, and so on. I still wear my Pro-Trek from 1994 and it still rocks!

    I sent mine back after a few weeks, my yellow one soon lost it's colour and marked up very quickly. Very disappointed, it's a fitness watch, not a rangeman. Instead I bought the latest mudmaster, cost me £700, it has two compasses, it can record your route and bring you back to wear you started. The latest mudmaster watch kicks the llamas ass.

    Ordered my first Casioak Bluetooth solar version earlier. Wish there will be a smarter watch version of it in the future. I’m new to g shocks and so far, all my research about the ones with smart watch features may not be as good compared to others. Like I said, my dream watch would be a Casioak form factor with touch screen, changeable watch faces, and those heart tracker and such that works well. This will happen in the future I just know it. For now, got my eye on Instinct 2s and Apple Watches for a proper smart watch

    It’s hard to compare these two as they are in different category’s. It might not seem that way on the surface but g shocks (200m) are 2x the build of the instinct (100m) and as a survival watch the shock is king. The g shock is much higher quality in every avenue it counts.Don’t forget that you can get one hell of a Casio VC for 250$ that would last a lifetime with no battery replacement and save your life if shit went south with its 3sensors. Its solar ability is far superior ,has all the tools to help monitor fitness goals, navigation and weather with out any smart features using real time tools. So in the end a Casio could save your life in many more ways and what’s the value of that ???

      Kinda depends on the watch. I love the size/weight of the Forerunner 965 even though on paper it's very similar to a 47mm Epix/Fenix but I find those a bit less comfortable (but still OK for daily wear). I only start to run into watches feeling "too big" when I wear the Epix/Fenix 51mm's or this Casio. I can pull it off but sometimes I find them frustrating to sleep with. Of course, it's all personal preference!
