  • @Fidi987
    @Fidi987 Місяць тому +9

Everybody in here is talking as if losing your right arm would not matter to you in any situation. Most people need a lot of time to accept this. I had a relative whose right leg was amputated and after he had just accepted that, it turned out that the left leg had to be amputated as well. He said "that leg will stay on!" He then had about half a year to come to terms with this fact and then accepted it. But who would be able to accept it on the spot and then at this young age? Imagine you play an instrument, it is your great hobby and then you realize this will never possible again. Would you not rage, fear, grieve for more than some minutes? Maybe never come to term with this loss ever?

I despised this episode and what eventually lead to me quitting the show. I already disliked this Doctor a lot. But the fact that she faked a medical issue to trick the parents into signing the surgery off is horrifying and she should be disbarred.
I also get the " Save my childs life and be hated argument" but it's not just that. Losing part of yourself is not something people can take easily. There are people who'd rather die whole, then be without a limb. That's not even including anything like the depression, and phantom pain issues.
It'd be a bit different if your child needs their appendix removed ASAP. But your child doesn't want to. As living without the appendix isn't such a life changing event.

I'm deeply terrified for the children of the people in this comments section, if they've got any. Yes, as a parent, this was the right move. However, this girl absolutely is valid in feeling a variety of emotions. She's alive, yes; but she's grieving her old life. Not to mention, she's dealing with waking up with an amputation she didn't consent to. She was completely blindsided. Having to undergo such a life-altering change is traumatic enough. But going about it like this is another level of emotionally harrowing. Just because you might think her record was "pointless", doesn't mean that to her, this is any less of a loss. This, to her, was her entire life. This was everything to her, & now she's lost it forever. She's a young girl, who's entitled to her emotions given this horrible situation.
Once again, it doesn't mean her parents are wrong. They saved her life. But she is valid in waking up feeling traumatized &, to say the least, upset.

So the messed up thing is that this doctor was SO good to the point that it became a challenge for House to make her do the types of immoral things that are everyday work for their insane jobs, like breaking and entering, lying to people, even fibbing hours or numbers of experience doing pointless procedures by a single digit becomes a test for her. And she like definitely needed to have her worldview readjusted because she was overly idealistic and naïve about the real world, it was genuinely a trait that made her a worse doctor. But the transformation and ease with which he eventually gets this extremely shiny and perfect young prodigy to acclimate to the environment of casual lawbreaking and l total enabling of all of their boss’s worst traits, that’s the real tragedy of the show. That House doesn’t want anyone to end up like him, but even by being in his direct orbit, he changes you over time. Chase was the longest and clearest example of this, but she got a nice little mini arc as well

Gender confirming surgery isn’t done to minors. The most that happens is hormone blockers which simply delay puberty. The drugs are safe and are commonly used in non-trans children to treat a variety of health issues. Look up Cherubism for one.
Sometimes teens over 16 will be given the option to begin hormone therapy. Once again, these are safe and commonly used drugs. This is only done if the teen has been through years upon years of counseling and the parents, teen, and doctors (yes, plural) all agree it’s the best decision for that individual. But that’s NOT surgery.

The topic has been danced around a lot with religious parents who would rather neglect their child over some imaginary being.
The legal precedent is that a medical emergency overrides the parent's wishes.
Though, this doctor also very nearly killed the patient by inducing a heart attack in order to do the whole "we found this in discovery and therefore legally protected because we had to save your life."

For the love of, there is no right or wrong answer to this. If it really was that severe, then yea, ya gotta cut it off. I do understand her feelings, I might've felt the same way cause I'm right handed, and I'm an artistic person. It would be deeply traumatic for me, weither I consented or not, if I had to loose my arm. The girl is not wrong for feeling the way she's feeling. But based off what I'm seeing, they didn't give her the chance to understand that she had ways to overcome it. Like prosthetics. Hell even if I was stuck with one arm I still do art no matter what. I wouldn't give up on it just because I lost an arm. But I don't blame her parents for choosing her life over a funeral.
There is no right answer that makes everyone happy here.
But the doctor had no right to force her into a critical moment just to amputate. That's malpractice I don't care how you color it. Not ok

I get why everyone's annoyed with the girl, but she's also a teenager still. She doesn't fully understand that it was literally, "Your arm stays on you or you stay on Earth", because not every kid thinks that fast, especially when something that crazy is happening. Stress and trauma can absolutely fry minds. Almost 10 years ago now, my brother had to stay in a children's hospital for an extended period, and I only have a handful of memories from that time due to how awful it was. I remember being a middle-schooler and my dad dragging me out of the hospital wing crying because I didn't want to leave him, I remember seeing a wildfire on the way home one time and crying because I'd never seen something like that in real life before, I remember playing Battlefront 2 on a PS2 set up in the recreation room with a super cool boy that I never saw again, and I remember the first day I visited my brother while we played on his new Darth Vader PSP and tested out that monster-catching game (whatever it was called) with the PSP camera

Regardless, the doctor stepped over a line, broke an oath and ultimately has opened the hospital up to several lawsuits
A doctor that dictates their will upon the patient, is not a good doctor, even if it’s gonna save a life, not everyone wants saving, it’s their life and their call
Tho I get the sentiment, there are plenty of TV doctors that constantly break their oath and almost never get punished for violating someone’s rights, even when it’s not a life saving medical situation, they always make calls, whenever the patient tells them “no”
They no longer consent to whatever you have done or will do
She may have lived but she didn’t want to, not at the time, and forced her to spend years being debilitated forever
The doctor does not make the call, the parents do here and they made their call, I honestly would have had the parents be the one to make the tough call, the doctor never should do this type of stuff
I believe she should have lived, I just wish the parents made the choice and not the cliché “I’m the doctor and I make the choice, not you!” Where they try to spin it as a moral story every time
Yes the girl should live and be treated, it just needed to be done through the parents
The answer is NOT to force a patient into a HEART ATTACK and RISKING THEIR LIFE ANYWAYS just to force an operation on the person
Not only that, but the girl then has to wake up and with no prep, finds out about it all and her arm missing, giving her stress induced trauma for her whole life, on top of now being disabled against her will
Ultimately turning her more angry at the world, ruining her relationship with her parents, shutting herself from her friends and not being able to follow her passion like she wants
Which can lead to doubt in herself and eventually depression and possibly suicidal thoughts
I know this is a dumb show, and I’m making assumptions towards the end, but it’s not exactly a far off point to make
There is a reason these rules exist IRL

Even when you’re a child, you have rights to a certain degree of medical autonomy and this violates that and that doctor for doing what she did tricking the girl into having her arm amputated when she she didn’t not only her, but her mother’s will that is straight up illegal and she should be in prison for that. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do the first and then doing the amputation. You can’t amputate your arm. It’s a severely mentally taxing thing. Having to talk her mother into it also tells me that she was a minor. Even if she wasn't, she had a medical emergency requiring surgery giving them the right to make emergency decisions for her. The discovery of the spread of cancer to the lymph node during that surgery changed the amputation need to emergent making it their choice. No court would side with the minor If she tried to sue her parents either, as they were choosing to save her life. The doctor said if they had left the arm during the surgery and let her sail she would have died. This is because they found cancer in a lymph node during her surgery meaning it was spreading fast, she didn't have time to wait anymore. No court would say parents should have let their child die for a record. Especially since there was no guarantee she even would have broken the record. One day of unexpected bad weather could have ruined that for her. Speaking as a RN btw.
